(1) Adjutant-General attends goodwill military soccer match between Myanmar and Indian teams

YANGON, 14 Sept-The goodwill military soccer match between the Myanmar and Indian soccer teams was held at Youths Sports Training Centre in Thuwunna at 3.30 PM today.

Present were Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Senior Tatmadaw officers of the Ministry of Defence, Defence Attaches of foreign embassies and guests. First, the two teams took the respective places.

Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint cordially greeted the players of the two teams. The two teams then exchanged commemoratives pennants and souvenirs. Myanmar Tatmadaw team beat the Indian military team 2-1.

After the ceremony, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint presented souvenirs and gifts to members of Indian Tatmadaw soccer team.


(2) Secretary-3 hosts dinner in honour of Indian Military Soccer Team

YANGON, 14 Sept-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant General Lt-Gen Win Myint hosted a dinner in honour of the Indian Military Soccer Team led by Brigadier Gopala Pillai Kamachandran Nair at the Karaweik Palace, Kandawgyi, today. Also present were Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and senior military officers, Indian Ambassador Mr Shyam Saran and officials from the Indian embassy and invited guests.


(3) Vietnamese Art Troupe entertains public

YANGON, 14 Sept - The 15-member Vietnamese Art Troupe of the Vietnam Youth Theatre led by Mr Nguyen Duc Trung, currently here under the cultural exchange programme, entertained the public at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street tonight. Among the spectators were Director-General of the Fine Arts Department U Kyaw Win, Ambassador of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and officials. The theatre was filled to capacity. The troupe will entertain the public tomorrow night.


(4) Myanmar, Japanese surgeons jointly treat cardiac patients

YANGON, 14 Sept - Myanmar and Japanese cardiac surgeons jointly treated six cardiac patients with the use of a Siemens Bicor machine at Defence Services General Hospital in Mingaladon today.

Together with Dr Hideo Tamai of Chika Hospital, Japan, Lt-Col Aung Kyaw Zaw and Lt-Col Tin Maung Aye, cardiac surgeons of DSGH, successfully treated the patients at Cardiac Ward of the hospital beginning 9 am. Director of Medical Services of Defence Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and Commandant of the hospital Col Tin Thein Lwin were also present together with the surgeons. The hospital is treating patients suffering from cardiac disorders without conducting surgical operations.

Since 1991, DSGH has jointly treated the cardiac patients with the participation of the foreign surgeons for 30 times. By applying modern methods, the hospital has successfully cured 1,000 cardiac patients. It is not only treating military personnel but also the civilians. Cardiac Surgeon Lt-Col Tin Maung Aye and team have successfully conducted coronary artery bypass graft on patients.


(5) Minister for Industry-2 meets Pakistani Ambassador

YANGON, 14 Sept -Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of Pakistan to Myanmar Mr Mian Yusuf Shah at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2 PM yesterday. They openly discussed mutual interest on industrial cooperation between the two countries Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials.


(6) Minister for H&T meets guests from Thailand

YANGON, 14 Sept-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Director Mr Jim Styers of Jim Styers Dolphin World Co and President Mr Kenneth Stevens of Millenium Investment Co, based in Thailand at his office at 11 am today Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, director-general and managing director of departments under the ministry, officials and General Manager Dr Phone Win of Shambhala Co Ltd.


(7) Commander inspects Mandalay International Airport project

YANGON, 14 Sept- Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win,  Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi and officials, arrived at construction site of Mandalay International Airport in Tada-U Township on 12 September morning.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected progress of work at the airport. General Manager of Mandalay International Airport Lt-Col Tun Hlaing conducted the commander round the airport. The Commander looked into the requirements. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint attended the prize presentation ceremony of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions in Mandalay Division at the National Theatre in Mandalay in the evening. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi and officials presented prizes to outstanding competitors.


(8) Devotees of Mayangon pay obeisance to Sayadaws

YANGON, 14 Sept - Devotees of Mayangon paid respects to Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and aged Sayadaws of Ganas of the Sangha of All Orders at Kaba Aye in the township this afternoon.

Present to pay obeisance to the Sayadaws led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Acinnabhivamsa were nuns, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and USDA members, members of religious associations and Township Writers and Journalists Association and local residents. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vannita of Kyaikwaing Gandayon Monastery explained the purpose of the ceremony.

Sayadaw Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kosalla read the biography of the Sayadaws. A vocalist sang religious songs. Joint Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Osadhabhivamsa delivered a sermon. Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein explained points of the ceremony. Director-General Dr Myo Myint supplicated on religious matters. The devotees then presented offertories to the Sayadaws and paid respects to them. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandiya of Dhamma Myintzuri Monastery delivered a religious sermon. The congregation shared the merits gained.

Yangon, 14 Sept-Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, CEC members and well-wishers attended a ceremony to donate disposable syringes and needles, bicycles, toys, foodstuff and air-conditioners for the MMCWA in the hall of the association at the corner of Thanthuma Road and Parami Road in South Okkalapa Township at 11 am today.

Mr Shiobara of Japan presented 1,200 sets of disposable syringes and needles, bicycles, toys and noodle, U Maung Sein of Nobel Land Co Ltd two air-conditioners worth K 600,000, Brand Manager Daw Pwint Oo Swe of Diethelm Co Ltd 300 packs of Ovaltine worth K 400,000 to Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, who presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers. Then, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe spoke words of thanks.

Deputy Minister inspects railroads and bridges

Yangon, 14 Sept - Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than, accompanied by officials of Myanma Railways, inspected rail tracks and bridges from the Central Railway Station up to Division Nos 6, 7 and 8 on 11 September, and gave instructions on maintenance of railroads and bridges.

The deputy minister and party inspected construction of a railroad bridge on Donthami River on the railroad between Thaton and Myainggalay. In the briefing hall, the deputy minister gave instructions on worksite safety and implementation of projects in accord with the set standards.

On 12 September morning, the deputy minister and party inspected the replacement of concrete sleepers along the railroad from Thaton to Mottama Stations. Afterwards, the deputy minister visited the locomotive repair factory in Mottama. He also gave instructions on the finding of the axis for the approach road to Deputy Minister inspects Thanlwin River Bridge on the bank of Mawlamyaing.

In the evening, he met with employees of the Road Transport, the Directorate of Transport, the Transport Planning Department in Mawlamyaing. After that, the deputy minister met with division-level officers and supervisors of Myanma Railways at Mawlamyaing (Taung) Station, and gave instructions on maintenance of railroads and staff welfare.

Duties assigned to implement first five-year project for eradication of narcotic drugs

YANGON, 14 Sept - A ceremony to assign duties to township authorities to implement the first five-year project covered by the 15-year project for eradication of narcotic drugs in Yangon West District, was held in the meeting hall of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council this morning.

Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein made an opening speech, and assigned duties to chairmen of township committee for drug abuse control. Dr Ba Thaung and Dr Chit Ko Ko explained the working programmes of the project.


(10)Photo Exhibition to mark 55th Anniversary Independence Day of Republic of Korea continues

Yangon, 14 Sept-The "Korean War & Korea Fifty Years Later" Photo Exhibition to mark the 55th Anniversary Independence Day of the Republic of Korea, sponsored by Embassy of Korea in Myanmar, continued at the Yangon City Hall for the second day today. People visited the exhibition with interest. Documentary rare photos taken during Korea war and documentary photos on improvement of Korea 50 years in the aftermath of the war were on display. The exhibition continues up to 15 September from 9.30 am to 4 PM daily. Admission is free.


(11) Sports News

Sports Coach Course No 5 concludes

YANGON, 14 Sept - Sports Coach Course No 5 for basic education sports instructors concluded at Institute of Sports and sports Education of the Sports and Physical Education Department at Kyaikkasan this afternoon.

The course was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Education. Vice-Chairman of Myanmar-mar Olympic Committee Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung gave a speech at the closing ceremony.

The deputy minister presented prizes to trainees who were outstanding in the respective subjects. He then presented certificates to trainees through their representative. Twenty three male and 38 female trainees totalling 61 attended the course.

First round of 16th Tatmadaw Under-21 Soccer Tournament continues

YANGON, 14 Sept-Four groups of the first round of the Year 2000 16th Defence Services Commander-in-chief's Trophy Under-21 Soccer Tournament continued at the respective zones this evening. In Group (A) of South-East Command Zone in Mawlamyine, No 66 Light Infantry Division beat Northern Command 2-1, in Group (B) of South-West Command Zone in Pyapon, Tatmadaw (Navy) beat Central Command 2-0, in Group (C) of Central Command Zone in Mandalay, No 77 Light Infantry Division beat No 33 Light Infantry Division 8-2 and in Group (D) of Southern Command Zone (Toungoo) Coastal Region Command beat Triangle Region Command 4-1.

 Tun Tint Aung selected to take First Tiger Cup Million Baht Kick

YANGON, 14 Sept - Coach Tun Tint Aung of Myanmar Football Federation was selected to be the Myanmar Representative to the First Tiger Cup Million Baht Kick to be held in Bangkok. The final round was conducted with four qualifying stages.

Ten selected footballers " five each from lower and upper Myanmar" took part in the final round conducted at Padonmar Sports Ground in Sangyoung Township on 9 September. The First Tiger Cup Million Baht Kick will be held at half time on the final day of the third Tiger Cup Soccer Tournament in Thailand on 18 November 2000.

All the selected participants from ASEAN countries are to attempt to score from the one end of the penalty " D " of one side of the ground into the opposite goal. A one-metre high board set to be placed across the goal will ensure that the balls do not just roll into the goal and win one million Thai Baht (US $ 28,000). The ground will also be demarcated into three areas that will decide if participants win 5,000, 10,000 or 20,000 bath.



(12) 35 Thantlang NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 14 Sept-Thirty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Hnarein Village-tract, Thantlang Township, Chin State. Thirty-five members of Thantlang Township NLD, Chin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thantlang Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 3 August 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
