(1) Daw Kyaing Kyaing attends ceremonies to mark successful placement of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne, to carve the Image and to lay foundation for Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi

YANGON, 12 Sept-Ceremonies to mark successful placement of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne, to carve the Image and to lay foundation for Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi were held on Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township at 7.30 am today, attended by Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

Also present on the occasion were Daw Mya Mya San, wife of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development. Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief(Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, department heads, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, artists, sculptors and stone sculptors and guests.

First, the congregation recited Namo Tassa three times to open the ceremony. On behalf of the Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Vice-Chairman Agga Maha Pandita Mandalay Masoeyein Taikthit Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa administered the Nine Precepts. Then, members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Next, Daw Kyaing Kyaing, , Daw Mya Mya San, Secretary- I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and Daw Khin Cho Oo, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Daw Marlar Tint, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and wife, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and wife and Lt-Gen Tin Hla and wife donated provisions to Sayadaws.

Afterwards, on behalf of the Government of the State Peace and Development Council, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt supplicated to the Sayadaws.

In his supplications, the Secretary-l said it is learnt from the Sayadaws that the Buddha emerged in this world for peace and prosperity of the entire mankind. Likewise, Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image emerged for the benefit of the people. The good deeds have been done by the people since the appearance of the marble rock, which has been carved into the Image, till the Image was kept onto the throne. Parittas have been recited continuously and virtues of the Image have been recited throughout the period.

As the Image has become the main force overwhelming the people with the ardent will to carry out pious deeds, emergence of the Image, construction of the Gandakuti Kyaung and all-round development of the Mindhamma Hill will be marked as a milestone in history.

Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon.

The congregation shared the merits gained. At the ceremony to mark the successful placement of the Image onto the throne, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt unveiled the Image and the throne. Afterwards the ceremony to start carving of the Image was held. The Secretary-1 initiated the carving of the Image in accord with f the religious tradition.

The Secretary-l laid the jewellery casket at the ceremony to lay foundation to build the Gandakuti Kyaung. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, and Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin laid the foundation.

The Secretary-l laid the stone plaque recording the ceremony on the foundation and sprinkled scented-water on it. He then performed rituals of golden and silver showers.


(2) Secretary-1 and wife attend Vietnamese Cultural Night

YANGON, 12 Sept-A ceremony to hold the Vietnamese Cultural Night performed by the Vietnamese Art Troupe of the Vietnam Youth Theatre to mark the 55th Anniversary of the Vietnamese National Day and 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Union of Myanmar was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street at 7 PM today.

Present were Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, ministers and their wives, the Chief of Staff (Navy), the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Ambassadors and their wives of foreign embassies in Yangon, Ambassador of SRV Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and wife, embassy staff and guests.

First, Ambassador of SRV Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and head of Vietnamese Art Troupe Mr Nguyen Duc Trung extended greetings. Then, the Vietnamese Art Troupe presented entertainment programmes with Vietnamese traditional songs and dances and Myanmar songs to the guests.

After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented a flower basket and bouquets to Vietnamese Art Troupe.


(3) National entrepreneurs to be permitted to conduct farming on reclaimed land in Kachin State and Sagaing Division

YANGON, 12 Sept-A coordination meeting on implementation of agriculture and livestock breeding activities after reclamation of fallow and virgin lands in Kachin State and Sagaing Division was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this afternoon, with an address by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Speaking-on the occasion, the Secretary-3 said Myanmar is a nation relying mainly on agro-based economy; it is extending the national sown acreage and irrigation facilities year after year; however there still remain large areas of untapped land and water resources in the nation.

The Secretary-3 then said one million acres of land each will be reclaimed in Kachin State and Sagaing Division for development of agriculture sector. He spoke of the need for cooperation among related departments. He said national entrepreneurs who want to invest in reclaimed lands are to be invited.

Achievements will be made economically if livestock breeding is undertaken properly, he said. Arrangements are to be made for reclamation of all fallow and virgin lands in Kachin State and Sagaing Division in four years beginning from 2001-2002.


(4) Minister for H&T meets Ambassador of Israel

YANGON, I 2 Sept-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of Israel to Myanmar Mr Baruch Ram at his office at 2 PM today.. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, the director-general .and the managing Director of departments under the ministry and officials.


(5) Minister inspects sugar mills, tractor station in Bago and Magway Divisions

YANGON, 12 Sept-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at No 11 Sugar Mill at Inngagwa in Paukkhaung Township, Pyay District, Bago Division (Western Branch), on 11 September.

The minister inspected preparations for running the mill and machines. The factory manager and engineers conducted the minister and party round the mill.

Then, the minister met sugarcane growers, division, district and township level officials and staff of the mill. Local farmers reported on matters related to cultivation of sugarcane, purchase, transportation and production roads. The minister urged them to strive for meeting the targets of the sugar mills.

At No 12 Sugar Mill (Nawade) in Pyay, the minister met local farmers of the project area of the mill. The minister explained cultivation and production of various crops and the role of the farmers for economic development of the State. Local farmers reported on requirements.

The minister and party inspected preparations for operating of the Nawade Sugar Mill and warehouses. He also inspected agricultural equipment innovated by Agricultural Mechanization Department.- The equipment can be used with tractors.

In the afternoon, the minister, accompanied by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Councils Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Chairmen of Thayet and Magway District Peace and Development Councils Lt-Col Tin Soe and Lt-Col Zaw Thein and members of Magway District Agriculture Coordinating Committee.  inspected preparations for operating of No 10 Sugar Mill at Duyingabo in Aunglan. At No 9 Sugar Mill at Yonseik in Aunglan, the minister met local farmers of Duyingabo and Yonseik regions.

Chairman Brig-Gen Thein Zaw explained condition for extended cultivation of sugarcane acreage among vacant and virgin lands being reclaimed into cultivable lands in Magway Division. Then, local farmers reported on extended cultivation, purchase, transportation and availability of pedigree sugarcane.

Afterwards, the minister and the chairman inspected the sugar mills. This morning, the minister arrived at No 33 Tractor Station in Pyay. The minister inspected repair of tractors, warehouses, tractors and power-tillers, repair of pumps and nozzles at the Station.


(6) Minister for Health tours Mandalay Division

YANGON, 1 2 Sept-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Health Department, inspected constructions project. of Institute of Dental Medicine (Mandalay) yesterday morning. Rector Dr Mya Thaw and officials conducted the minister and party around the construction site. The minister fulfilled the needs.

Then, the minister and party proceeded to the construction project of Medical Research Department (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin. At the briefing hall of the project, Director-General Dr Myint Lwin, Director U Tin Tun Aung of Myanma Industrial Construction Services, Ministry of Industry-2 and officials explained construction work. The minister inspected the buildings under construction and herbal plant garden and attended to their needs. Then, the minister and party inspected wards and blood bank at PyinOoLwin District People's Hospita1. District Health Officer Dr Tin Htwe and specialists conducted them round the hospital. The minister fulfilled the needs.

Later, the minister and party proceeded to Health Planning Department (Upper Myanmar) in Mandalay where they were conducted round the department - by Deputy Director Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint and officials. The minister attended to the needs. Afterwards, the minister and party inspected construction of three-storey building of Myanmar Medical Association (Mandalay) and intensive care unit of Mandalay People's Hospital.


(7) Minister inspects construction of Myanmar International Fish Auction Market and Port in Myeik

YANGON, 12 Sept-Secretary of Leading Committee for Region-wise Development in agriculture sector Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Deputy Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen Tin Lat and officials inspected construction of Myanmar International Fish Auction Market and Port and office in industrial zone in Myeik on 10 September. Officials and Project Manager reported on the project. Fish auction market will be opened in November.

The minister gave instructions on construction of the project and tasks to be undertaken for airport and fish auction market. The minister and party inspected fish and prawn cold storage of Ahsaung-kaung Industries Co in the industrial zone. Factory manager reported on production of prawn, sale and income.

The minister and party inspected production process in the cold storage and gave instructions on work site safety. The minister and party also inspected a l,000-ton cold storage of Pyi Phyo Tun International Co in Pahtet Island.


(8) Commander-in-Chief(Air)'s Shield Volleyball C'Ship concludes

YANGON, 12 Sept-A ceremony to present prizes to the winners of Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Shield Volleyball Championship was held at Indoor Stadium in Meiktila at 8 am on 11 September, attended by Acting Base Commander of Flying Training Base and Base Commander of Ground Training Base Col Thura Khin Maung Win and senior military officers, officers, other ranks and families. At the final match, No I Provost (Air) Team beat Flying Training Base Team 3-0. After the match, on behalf of Commander-in-Chief (Air), Base Commander Col Thura Khin Maung Win presented prizes to the winners.


(9) Drug trafficker gets 20 years' imprisonment

YANGON, 12 Sept-A combined team comprising members of the local Intelligence Unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information searched a Dyna light truck with the number plate 1Ka/7735 at Fourth Miles Check Point in Taungoo and arrested Khin Maung Win, 23, of Kyaukgyi Township together with 4.572 kilos of marijuana at 11 am on 22 May.

Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Taungoo District Court handed down twenty years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on him on 1 August 2000.


(10) 28 Myinmu NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 12 Sept-Twenty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myinmu township, Sagaing Division. Twenty-eight members of Myinmu Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 February 2000 as they no longer wished o participate in party politics of NLD.
