(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Vietnam

YANGON, 2 Sept-On the occasion of the 55th Anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which falls on 2 September 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar has sent messages of felicitations to His Excellency MR Tran Duc Luong President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and to His Excellency Mr Phan Van Khai Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of Course in Diplomatic Skills for Senior Officials

YANGON, 1 Sept- The opening ceremony of the Course in Diplomatic Skills for Senior Officials 1/2000 conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held at Winzinminyaza Hall of Shin Ditha Pamaukkha Building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The ceremony was also attended by ministers, the Chief Justice, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, deputy ministers, senior Tatmadaw Officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Myanmar ambassadors, directors-general of the ministry, course instructors and trainees.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said. Today is a landmark day in the annals of our diplomatic history as this is the very first time ever that a course in diplomatic skills for senior government officials is being conducted. The course which has been instituted to impart knowledge of diplomacy and international relations to responsible officials from various ministries has attracted a large number of attendees in spite of their heavy responsibilities and schedules. This is indeed an indication of the high esteem and respect in which the course is regarded as well as a sign that the course will be of great benefit to the nation. On behalf of the Government, I would like to express my appreciation to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Ministry officials, course instructors and retired ambassadors for making the course possible.

In concluding, I would like to urge all of you to ensure that the objectives of the course are fully met and to become exemplary civil servants capable of discharging your responsibilities in the interest of the country and people. Altogether 36 trainee officers of the ministries are attending the 8-week course.


(3) MEC Chairman attends fine arts show and music concert of students of University of Culture (Yangon)

YANGON, 1 Sept-The students who will attend the Fourth Convocation of University of Culture (Yangon) of Ministry of Culture staged fine arts show and music concert at National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street at 6.30 PM today, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The ceremony was also attended by the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of pro-rectors, professors, heads of department, registrars, faculty members and students.

First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party viewed the sculptures and 34 paintings created by the students. Heads of department and students explained facts about the sculptures and paintings.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party enjoyed the entertainment programme presented by the students of Music Division and Theatrical Division.


(4)Secretary-2 inspects agriculture, livestock breeding projects in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 1 Sept-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected agriculture and livestock breeding projects undertaken by national entrepreneurs in Ayeyawady Division yesterday and today. The Secretary-2 left for Zeebyukyun Agricultural Camp of Myanmar Billion Group Co Ltd in Nyaungdon Township by car yesterday afternoon.

Then, Chairman of Myanmar Billion Group Co Ltd U Aung Ko Win reported on condition of reclamation and cultivation work being done in wetlands in the division. After hearing reports, the Secretary-2 gave necessary instructions. Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected monsoon paddy fields and agricultural machinery of Myanmar Billion Group.

In the evening, the Secretary-2 and party flew by helicopter to Mogok-Deedok (South) Wetland Reclamation Project of Yuzana Agriculture and Livestock Breeding Group in Pantanaw Township. After that, the Secretary-2 and party proceeded to Mogok-Deedok (North) Wetland Reclamation Project in Pantanaw Township. First, the Secretary-2 and party inspected tractors, thrashers, paddy harvesters, paddy threshing and winnowing machines, power-tillers, paddy harvesting and thrashing machines and flotsam clearing machines of Olympic Co Ltd and First Top Co Ltd. In Mogok-Deedok (North) Wetland area, Olympic Co Ltd has been permitted to cultivate crops on 2,700 acres of land and First Top Co Ltd 2,773 acres. The two companies have already reclaimed over 3,500 acres in the area In 2000 2001, the companies have put 780 acres of land under monsoon paddy and cultivated crops on 474 acres in cooperation with local farmers on a mutually beneficial basis.

Then, the Secretary-2 heard reports on the allotment of plots of land for reclamation and cultivation and the condition of working with local farmers on a mutually beneficial basis, presented by Managing Director U Zaw Win Tun of Shwe Thanlwin Co and General Manager of CES Co U Tin Win. He called on officials of respective districts and townships to provide assistance in health, security and communications at the land reclamation and agricultural projects. The Secretary-2 and party left by helicopter for Pathein, where they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Tint Swe, military officers and division-level departmental officials.

The Secretary-2 and party this afternoon inspected poultry farming carried out by U Hla Myint and Daw Aye Myint on Ma Nyein Hla Hill in Pathein and pig breeding of South-West Command.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to No I Rice Mill of Ayeya Shwewa Co in Daka Village, Kangyidaunt Township. The Secretary-2 and party then inspected No I Rice Mill of the company. The company has been permitted to cultivate crops on 35,319 acres of land in Thabaung, Yekyi, Kyaunggon and Kangidaunt township. A total of 1,710 acres and 30,000 acres will be put under monsoon and summer paddy respectively by the company after land reclamation.

The Secretary-2 and party left Dhaka Village by helicopter and arrived back here at 5,15 PM today.


 (5) Secretary-2 attends ceremony to present prizes for Crops Cultivation and Production of Ayeyawady Division for 1999-2000

YANGON, 1 Sept-A ceremony to present prizes for Crops Cultivation and Production and General Implementation of Ayeyawady Division for 1999-2000 year was held at City Hall in Pathein this morning, at tended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council, Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), the deputy ministers, heads of department of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned, members of social organization wining companies, individual winners and guests.

In Ayeyawady Division, efforts are being made to extend cultivated areas, boost production and capacity of multiple crops than previous year; over 3,300,000 acres have been put under the monsoon paddy and the 1.8 million acres to be put under summer paddy, he added.  Division Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Ohn Than explained facts about the field lour for the presentation of prizes in Crops Cultivation and Production and General Implementation of Ayeyawady Division 19992000 year.

Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented prizes to the Committee for Boosting of Agricultural Production from 1997-98 to 1999-2000 year for extending the sown acreage up to 629,000.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented first, second and third prizes to Presidents and officials of Ayeyashwewa Co, Zinbaung Co and Billion Group Co for reclamation of wetlands in the division.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann presented prizes to officials of SI, Wa Wa Win, Olympic, First Top, Shwethan Lwin, CES, Myanmar Golden Star, Golden Green, Kalosein, ArkaU, Orchid, Linma Group, Panthapyay, Yadana Ayeya and Themese Cos for cultivation of crops in wetland region.

Then, Minister at the Prime Minister s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe presented FAO first prize to Bogale Township in cultivation of monsoon paddy FAO first, second and third prizes to Kyaiklat, Mawlamyinegyun and Myaungmya Townships in cultivation of summer paddy.

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein presented prizes to Myanaung township for outstanding production of edible oil crops, Pantanaw township for outstanding production of cotton and the manager and staff of Nyaungdon township for their outstanding performance in purchasing cotton.

Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe gave away prizes to U San Ngwe of Bogalay township, U Thein Htwe of Bogalay township and U Myint of Pyapon township for their outstanding performance in selling paddy.  Later, the Secretary-2 presented prizes to U Soe Thein of Chaungphya village, Hinthada township, for his achievement in producing 165 baskets of monsoon paddy per acre, U Than Aung of Htainkyun village, Kyaiklatt township, for his achievement in producing 197.65 baskets of summer paddy per acre and Daw Mya Mya of Kyeepaukkon village, Laymyetna township, for her achievement in producing 114.5 baskets of groundnut per acre.

Chairman of Yuzana Agricultural and Livestock Breeding Group U Htay Myint also presented prizes to U Soe Thein, U Than Aung and Daw Mya Mya.

After the prize distribution ceremony, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann reported on cultivation of monsoon paddy, summer paddy and other crops, reclamation of one mi11ion acres of land and conditions of GDP of the division.

Then, the members of Division Agricultura1 Production Boosting Committee reported on the use of arable land, arrangements for availability of water for agricultural purpose, the utilization of agricultura1 machinery, measures taken to increase sown-acreage and yield of crops.

The Secretary-2 said that Ayeyawady Division is one of the divisions on which the State has to rely mainly; as monsoon and summer paddy is cultivated on the largest scale in the division, it is a granary of the State.

In Ayeyawady Division, pulses and beans, edible oil crops, cotton and other. crops in addition to paddy, are being cultivated; it is needed to exert efforts to increase the sown acreage of crops including paddy.  In cultivating crops, not only is it necessary to exert efforts for an increase in yield, but arrangements are also to be made for the improvement of quality of crops such as rice and pulses and beans.  With the use of mechanical power, modern agricultural work is to be done, and crops are to be cultivated as many times as possible. Ayeyawady Division is favourable not only for agricultural work but also for livestock breeding work; fish and prawn breeding work is to be carried out extensively.

Efforts are to be exerted to ensure that Ayeyawady Division is reliable not only in the agricultural sector but also in the livestock sector. The ceremony came to a close in the afternoon.


(6) Secretary-2 attends merit-sharing ceremony at Kula Withethi Nunnery Sarthintaik

YANGON, 1 Sept-A ceremony to share merits for the construction of a two-storey building was held at Kula Withethi Sarthintaik on Maha Badoola Road, Pathein Ayeyawady Division this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.  Master of ceremonies U Kyaw Kyaw of Immigration and National Registration Department supplicated on collection of donations and construction of the building.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party received the Five Precepts from Chairman of Division Sangha Nayaka Committee (Wailuwun) Sayadawgyi Bhaddanta Nagavamsa. Members of the Sangha recited the parittas.   Afterwards, the Secreatry2  presented offertories to members of the Sangha. Then, the Secretary-2 presented offertories to presiding nuns Daw Eindri. and Kunmari.

Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun supplicated on religious matters. Chairman of Division Sangha Nayaka Committee (Shwekyin) Sayadaw Agga Maha Gantha Vacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Mahosathapandita delivered a sermon. The congregation shared merits gained.


(7) Chairman off NCCMC inquires after delegate to National Convention

YANGON, 1 Sept - Chairman of National Convention Convening Management Committee Brig-Gen Tin Aye, together with Secretary of Management Committee Lt-Col Win Naung and Secretary of Health Subcommittee Lt-Col Kyi Lin, asked after U Ko Ko Gyi, a delegate to the National Convention who is receiving medical treatment at Yangon General Hospital, this morning.

Chairman of Management Committee Brig-Gen Tin Aye and party arrived at Yangon General- Hospital. Medical Superintendent Dr Teik Wan and physicians welcomed them and reported on health condition of U Ko Ko Gyi.

Brig-Gen Tin Aye spoke words of encouragement to the delegate to the National  Convention and left there.  up


(8) Chief Justice meets Australian Ambassador

YANGON, 1 Sept-Chief Justice U Aung Toe met Australian Ambassador Mr Trevor Wilson who was accompanied by First Secretary Mr Douglas Faskett, at his office this afternoon. Also present at the ca11 were Director-General of Supreme Court U Tin Aye and Head of Office U Win Myint.


(9) PRC journalist delegation tours Bagan, Mandalay and Sagaing

YANGON, 1 Sept-The eight-member journalist delegation led by Director Mr. Li Maoguan of the Editorial Office for Political News of Qiushi Magazine of People s Republic of China left here by air on 29 August and arrived at NaungU Airport at 7.30 am.

The delegation visited Shwezigon, Alodawpyi, Amanda and Thabbyinnu pagodas that morning. In the evening, they visited Bagan Archaeological Museum, Myanma Lacquerware Institute and Shweleikmin and U Ba Nyein Lacquerware Enterprise.

On 30 August, they left Bagan for Popa where they were welcomed by Administration Officer of Forest Department U Myint Ngwe. At the briefing hall, they were briefed on facts about tasks on greening Popa region and conservation of environment. Then, they studied herbal plantation, Popa Mountain Resort and they climbed Mt Popa and enjoyed panoramic view of the Popa region and took photos.

In the evening, they returned to Mya Yi Nanda Hotel in Bagan and later watched the sunset from Lawka Nanda Tooth Relic Pagoda. Yesterday morning, they proceeded to Mandalay by air. Next, they visited Kuthodaw and Mandalay Hsutaungpyi pagodas and enjoyed scenery view and the sunset from the top of Mandalay Hill.

The delegation today went to University for Development of National Races where they were welcomed by Rector of the University Col Zaw Min Thein and faculty members and students.

At the briefing hall, they were briefed on the history of the university and a day s work of the students by video, and souvenirs were exchanged. After that, they visited the University Museum and signed in the visitors' book. Later, they visited Razamanicula Kaunghmudaw Pagoda in Sagaing and Taungthaman Lake and U Pein Bridge in Amarapura. In the afternoon, they studies wood carving works in Amarapura and arrived back here at 5.20 PM today.


(10) Thai delegation arrives

YANGON, 1 Sept-At the invitation of Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj Gen Saw Lwin, a twenty-members delegation led by Minister at the Prime Minister s office Chairman of Thai Tourism Authority Dr Adisai Bodharamik arrived here at 9.30 am today.

The delegation was welcomed at the airport by Ministers for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalatak and staff of Thai Embassy and officials.

Myanmar, Thailand discuss tourism promotion

YANGON, 1 Sept-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Minister at the Prime Minister s Office and Chairman of Thai Tourism Authority Dr Adisai Bodharamik and party at his office at 2 PM today.

Also present at the call I were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, departmental officials and Ambassador of Thailand Mr. Pensak Chalarak.  In the evening, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, the deputy minister and party discussed mutual cooperation in development of tourism industry between Myanmar and Thailand with Minister at the Prime Minister s Office and Chairman of Thai Tourism Authority Dr Adisai Bodharamik and party at Mingala Hall of Kandawgyi Palace Hotel.Then, Minister Maj Gen Saw Lwin hosted a dinner at Sedona Hotel in honour of the visiting minister and party.


(11) 97 kgs of Ephedrine powder seized in Chanayethazan Township

YANGON, 1 Sept-Members of local intelligence unit, acting on information, at Tharaphi Street, Yanmyolon Ward, Chanayethazan Township, searched Htanlouda and seized 97 kgs of Ephedrine powder in three cartons on 29 March 2000. On further investigation, Kamkyinkhoak, owner of the illicit drugs, was then arrested. Mandalay No 3 Police Station filed Htanlouda, 39, son of U Belon, of Seinpan Ward, Maha Aungmye Township, and. Kamkyinkhouk, 30, son of U Randal, of Maha Myaing Ward 2, the same township, under the Section 15/16(B) /21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Mandalay District Court sentenced 10 years  imprisonment on them under Section 16(B) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law on 17 August 2000.


(12) Voters of three districts in Taninthayi Division unanimously demand dissolution of NLD

YANGON, 1 Sept-The voters from three districts in Taninthayi Division, unanimously expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolution of it in Dawei, Myeik and Kawthoung on 20 August. Over 4,000 voters from Dawei, Launglon, Yebyu and Thayetchaung Townships rallied at Shwewei Thiri Gymnasium in Dawei, Dawei District.  Daw Ni Ni Lwin of Kamyawkin Village of Launglon Township tabled a motion calling for no support for NLD and dissolution of it. Representatives of local people seconded the motion. Representatives of four townships in the district handed over petitions signed by voters to the representative of Dawei District Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission.  There are 269,228 eligible voters in Dawei District. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolution of it, was 233,660 people or 86.79 per cent.

Similarly, 3,500 voters from Myeik, Palaw,- Kyunsu and Taninthayi Townships rallied at Myeik Gymnasium in Myeik Township, Myeik District. U Myint Thein of Kangyi Ward of Myeik Township tabled a motion calling for no support for NLD and dissolution of it. Representatives of local people seconded the motion. Representatives of four townships in the district handed over petitions signed by voters to member of Dawei District Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Ye Pe.  There are 236,879 eligible voters in Myeik District. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolution of it, was 220,302 voters or 93 per cent.

Likewise, 4,208 voters from Kawthoung and Bokpyin Townships rallied at Nawarat Gymnasium in Kawthoung Township, Kawthoung District. U Thet Lwin of Ayeyeiknyein Ward of Kawthoung Township tabled a motion calling for no support for NLD and dissolution of it. Representatives of local people seconded the motion. Representatives of two townships in the district handed over petitions signed by voters to member of Dawei District Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Thaung Nyunt.

There are 67,189 eligible voters in Kawthoung District. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolution of it, was 58,118 voters or 86.49 per cent.

Out of 573,296 eligible voters in Taninthayi Division, 512,080 voters or 89.32 per cent unanimously expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolution of it.


(13) 19 Shwebo Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 1 Sept-Nineteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwebo Township, Sagaing Division. Nineteen members of Shwebo Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwebo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 4 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
