(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Slovak Republic

YANGON, 1 Sept-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Micelles Dzurinda, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, on the occasion of the National Day of the Slovak Republic which falls on 1st September 2000.

(2)Minister for Foreign Affairs sends felicitations to Slovak Republic

YANGON, 1 Sept-U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Eduard Kukan, Foreign Minister of the Slovak Republic, on the occasion of the National Day of the Slovak Republic which falls on 1st September 2000.


(3) Work continues to put Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne

YANGON, 31 Aug -Devotees including members of the Sangha, nuns and people paid homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, Yangon North District, today.

Engineers and employees of Myanma Railways and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise are working hard to convey Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne of Mindhamma Hill under the close supervision of Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung. Wut Associations recited the parities from 7 am to 10 PM. Donations received for the funds of the Image from 5 August to date totalled K 32,613,100. The organizing and construction committees for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image held a coordination meeting at the briefing hall on Mindhalla Hill this afternoon.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and Chairman of Construction Committee Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko spoke on the occasion. Then, various committees v reported on their activities to the meeting.


(4) Need to develop tourism and boost earnings from the industry stressed

YANGON, 3 1 Aug - Tourism Development Man agreement Committee held meeting No 2/2000 at the Strand Hotel this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of TDMC Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. He said tourism is a very popular business as well as a main foreign currency earner. It is a main business in some countries.

Myanmar has favourable conditions and is endowed with many tourist attractions which can contribute towards the flourishing of tourism; at least one or two places can be found at every state and division of the nation.

There are many regions in Myanmar which can capture the interest of tourists, and these regions abound in cultures concerning ancient times, traditions and ethnic groups.

The country is also endowed with many breath-taking beaches, towering snowcapped mountains which can enthrall mountaineers. many forms of aquatic life, and sea beds bedecked with beautiful coral reef. Concerning bio-diversity, natural lakes and forests which abound in rare species of butterfly, birds and wild animals, exist in the nation. There are imposing ancient religious edifices of the Theravada Buddhism, pagodas, stupas and ancient cities in the nation.

A significant fact is the finding of 40-million-year old fossilised remains of anthropoid primates in Pondaung and Ponnya region in Pakokku District. The Secretary-l gave suggestions, saying efforts should be made for progress of the industry in accord with the means sought at the meeting.


(5) Secretary-l receives Indian guests

YANGON, 31 Aug-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Secretary of Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of India Mr Kamal Pande and party at the guest house of Ministry of Defence this morning.

Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Indian Ambassador Mr Shyam Saran.


(6) Secretary-1 and wife attend reception to mark National Day of Malaysia

YANGON, 31 Aug- Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe attended the reception to mark the National Day of Malaysia hosted by Ambassador of Malaysia to Myanmar Dato Mohammad Bin Noh and wife at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road at 6.30 PM today. The reception was also attended by the ministers, the deputy ministers, diplomats and their wives and guests.


(7) PRC corporation agrees to build pulp factory in Myanmar

YANGON, 31 Aug - Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries. under the Ministry of Industry- 1 and China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation of the People's Republic of China signed a 90 million-dollar contract on building a pulp factory with a daily production capacity of 200 tons at Hlaygyitet village, Thaboung township, Ayeyawady Division.

The ceremony to sign the contract was held in the presence of Secretary-3, of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint at the Sedona Hotel this evening. Present on the occasion were Deputy Prime Ministers Vice- Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt- Gen Tin Tun, minister, officials, Charge d' Affairs ai of RPC Embassy Mr Tang Ying and staff, Chairman of the corporation Mr Yang Chang Heng and officials and guest.

Speaking on he occasion, Minister for Industry-1 UAung Thaung said. The remaining contract cost is to be settled through barter system. Mr Yang Chang Heng also spoke words of thanks. Managing Director of MPCI U Ngwe Thaw and Mr Yang Chang Heng signed the contract.


(8) Seminar on combined treatment with allopathic and traditional medicine held

YANGON, 31 Aug- A seminar on combined treatment with allopathic and traditional medicine, organised by the Department of Traditional Medicine under the Ministry of Health, was held in the meeting hall of the department on U Wisara Road this morning, addressed by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, directors general, deputy directors-general, directors, professors and lecturers of departments under the Ministry of Health, Residence Representative of WHO Dr Agostino Borra and officials, members of the traditional medicine council, heads of state/division departments of traditional medicine and medical superintendents of traditional medicine hospital.

The holding of the seminar on combined treatment with allopathic and traditional medicine is task to be carried out without fail; based on combined treatment with allopathic traditional medicine, cures for another chronic illness can be found out. In conclusion, the minister urged all to do their utmost in finding treatment not only for chronic illness but also for diseases which are difficult to cure and to attend to the well-being of human resources which will work in the interests of the nation.

Altogether 13 western medicine professors and lecturers and 17 traditional medicine practitioners will take part in the seminar, which will continue till 1 September.


(9) Indian Secretary concludes visit

YANGON, 31 Aug-Secretary of Ministry of Home Affairs of Republic of India Mr Kamal Pande and party who attended the Seventh National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India, left here for home by air this afternoon. They were seen off at the airport by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Director-General of General Administration Department U Maung Win and officials, Indian Ambassador Mr Shyam Saran and embassy staff.


(10) Functions of Myanmar Literary Resource Centre explained

YANGON, 31 Aug -A ceremony to explain the functions of Myanmar Literary Resource Centre was held at the building of MLRC in the compound of Myanmar Education Research Bureau on Pyay Road this morning. Present were Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, heads of department and officials, members of the management committee of MLRC, chairmen and personnel of non governmental organizations and media men.

Chairman of Myanmar Academy of Arts and Science Chairman of Management Committee of MLRC U Than Oo explained the functions of MLRC. Director-General of No I Basic Education Department (Lower Myanmar) member of Management Committee of MLRC U Tin Nyo reported on the brief account of MLRC. Senior Researcher of MERB U Myat Naing explained financial matters of MLRC. Then, those present, raised queries on MLRC, and members of Management Committee-replied to their queries.



(11)Central Committee for Conveying South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame into Myanmar meets

YANGON, 31 Aug-The Central Committee for Conveying South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame into Myanmar met at the meeting hall of the Department of Health on Theinbyu Road yesterday morning. Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint made an opening speech.

Also present were Director-General of the Department of Health Dr Wan Maung, Police Brig-Gen Oo Hla Tun of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, chairmen of social organizations, officials of departments concerned and members of the Central Committee. The deputy minister said that the World Health Organization has launched the anti-tobacco movement in the world with added momentum, the South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame represents the anti-tobacco movement of the entire people; Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt has given instructions to welcome the Flame like other nations do, and while the Flame is kept in Myanmar, anti-tobacco activities are to be launched; all are required to follow the instructions.

Then, Secretary of the Central Committee Director General of the Department of Health Dr Wan Maung reported on the formation of the Central Committee and working programmes.


(12) C-in-C (Air)'s Championship Shield Volleyball Tournament opens

YANGON, 31 Aug-Year 2000 Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Championship Shield Volleyball Tournament was opened at the Gymnasium in Meiktila yesterday morning, with an opening address by Base Commander of Ground Training Base Col Thura Khin Maung Win. Present also were base commanders, squadron leaders, senior military officers, station commanders from Meiktila Station and guests. Altogether 10 teams are taking part in the tournament, and Mingaladon Air Base team met Ground Training Base team yesterday.


(13) l78 kegs of Ephedrine powder seized in Maha Aungmye Township

YANGON, 31 Aug-Local intelligence unit, acting on information, waiting at 35th Street (between 75th Street and 76th Street), Maha-Aungmye Township, Mandalay, on 12 August, arrested Aung Zaw Haiku (a) AE Haiku, son of U Shwe Tin, of No 36, Myoma Ward, Tam, Aung Naing Win (a) Hang Lay, son of U Ba Aung, of 181/94, 25th Street (between 86th Street and 87th Street), ,Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay, Khin Maung Than, son of U Chit Naing, of 82, 12th Street between 80th Street and 81st Street), Aungmyethazan Township, and David Htan Hswam Pau, son of U Zamzakat, of 194, Bogyoke Street, Botahtaung Township, Yangon, together with 157 kgs of Ephedrine powder.

On further investigation, Kam Khant Khaing (a) Maung Khaing, owner of the Ephedrine, son of U Zandolian, of Region 14, Panlon Ward, Kalay, Chit Ko Ko (a) Byagyi, son of U Hla Shein, of 82nd Street (between 32nd Street and 33rd Street), Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay, Thaw Zin Oo (a) Kyinmu (a) Katzakyin, son of U Shinzapaung, of Aungmingalar Ward, Kalay, and Thet Naung, son of U Kyaw Swe, of Zabeimyaung Village, Monyo Township. On further investigation, Maung Nyo, son of U Ye Hsai, of Namhsan, was nabbed with 21 kgs of Ephedrine powder. Action was taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs, and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(14) Drug possessor gets 15 years' imprisonment

YANGON, 31 Aug-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Mandalay Anti drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Ma Baby, 26, daughter of U Tin Mya, of Seinyaungzon Garden on 60th Street, Ahneiktaw Ward, Aungmye Thazan Township, Mandalay on 20 November 1999. She was arrested together with 27 grams of heroin packed in a plastic sack in her bedroom. She was filed under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by No 1 Mandalay Police Station. She was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment under Section 15 (A) by Mandalay District Court on 9 August 2000.


(15) 30 NLD members of Hlegu Township resign of own accord

YANGON, 31 Aug-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Barlar Village-tract, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division. Thirty members of Barlar Village-tract, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlegu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 7 July 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
