(1) Under-Officers Course No 28 of Tatmadaw (Army) concludes

YANGON, 25 Aug - On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye addressed the graduation parade of Under-Officers Course No 28 of the Tatmadaw (Army) Officers Training School at the OTS Parade Grounds in Bahtoo Tatmyo this morning. General Maung Aye inspected the graduation parade. He then took the salute of the cadet companies.

On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye presented the silver sword to Best Cadet Ye Lin Aung.

Then, General Maung Aye said systematic training was given to the  cadets to assign duties of the State in the future. At the course, they have already acquired the military knowledge which privates, other ranks and officers are to possess. They have also studied modern education up to the level of the second-year university courses. They will continue to undergo practical training as under-officers at respective battalions to gain military, organizational and administrative experiences.

The patriotic Tatmadaw hand in hand with the people has taken part in the political, economic and administrative sectors in order to overcome all dangers threatening the nation. Unlike other armed forces, the Tatmadaw is endowed with political, economic and administrative experiences. As the Tatmadaw has military, political, economic and administrative out-looks, it can successfully shoulder all the State's duties at present.

In conclusion, the General exhorted all to by their level best to become good leaders who can meet the development challenge of the 21st Century, to have military outlook, political outlook, economic outlook and administrative outlook, to become good Tatmadaw members who can overcome any kind of difficulties, to abide by the Soldier's Code of Conduct, to set a shining example of discipline and to safeguard the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw. Then, the. General left the parade ground.


(2) Aungzeya Bridge commissioned into service to ensure smooth, secure transport for growing population and traffic of Hlinethaya

YANGON, 25 Aug- The inauguration ceremony of Aungzeya Bridge across the Hline River linking Insein and Hlinethaya Townships, constructed by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction, was held at the pandal on the bank of Insein Township at 8.30 am today, attended by Chairman of the Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt Gen Tin Oo.

First, Commander Maj- Gen Khin Maung Than spoke on the occasion. Then, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun said.  Then Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said. In conclusion, the Secretary-2 urged all to maintain and safeguard the bridge and expressed his thanks to those present on the occasion.  Next, the Secretary-2 presented gifts to engineers and employees who participated in building the bridge, through Deputy Chief Engineer (Bridge) of Aung Zeya Bridge U Khin Maung Aye.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2, the commander, deputy prime ministers, ministers, the chief of staff (air), deputy ministers, senior military officers, heads of department and guests took seats at the designated places at the top of the bridge on the bank of Insein Township.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge. Then, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally unveiled the stone plaque. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party, departmental officials, guests, students and local people posed for photos and walked on the bridge from the bank of Insein Township to that of Hlinethaya Township.

Aung zeya Bridge, situated on Yangon-Pathein Highway, links Insein Township and Hlinethaya Township in Yangon Division. The stake-driving ceremony for construction of the bridge was held on 24 April 1997, and construction work has been completed on 15 August 2000. It is a suspension steel bridge.

The bridge including the main bridge and the approach structures is 3,786 feet and 3 inches long, and the main bridge is 1,903 feet long. The approach structure on the bank of Insein Township is 1,032 feet and 8 inches and the approach structure on the bank of Hlinethaya Township 850 feet and 7 inches long. The four-lane motorway is 52 feet and 6 inches wide, and on both sides of the bridge, there are two 6-foot-wide pedestrian lanes. The waterway clearance under the bridge is 922 feet wide and 45 feet high.

The two towers of the main bridge are put up with the use of RCD Method Air Lift System. In building two towers, altogether 76 piers are used. At the main bridge, 88 steel cables are used. The iron beams used at the bridge weigh 2,748 tons. On the iron plates, stone slabs are laid, both of which weigh 10,670 tons. The weight of tar laid on the stone slabs is 3,000 tones. The total weight which the two towers have to bear is 13,670 tons. In Myanmar, there are six types of bridges.


(3) Deputy Prime Minister receives Japanese guests

YANGON, 25 Aug- Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Senior Vice-President of Jasa Corporation of Japan Mr Y Kitaguchi and President of Daimex Inc of Japan Mr Takenaga at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were officials of Government's Office.

Minister meets Ambassador of Japan, foreign guests

YANGON, 25 Aug- Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Assistant General Manager of Chiyoda Corporation Mr Tatsunokuchi and party at his office at 1 PM today.

The minister received Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori at 2.30 PM today.  He also met President of First Aquaculture Resource Management Sdn Bhd Mr Johnny L H High and party at 4.30 PM today. Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, directors-general, managing directors and officials of department and enterprise under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.

Minister for Cooperatives receives Israeli Ambassador

YANGON, 25 Aug- Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San received Ambassador of Israel to the Union of Myanmar Mr Baruch Ram at his office at 2 PM today.

Also present at the call were Director-General of the Cottage Industries Department U Sein Than, Managing Director of Cooperative Import and Export Enterprise Daw Khin Swe Soe, Deputy Director-General of Cooperative Department U Tin Win and officials of the ministry .


(4) Minister inspects Intagaw Industrial Zone

YANGON, 25 Aug- Ministers for .Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin arrived at Intagaw Industrial Zone of Ministry of Industry-2 at 7.30 am today. The minister was welcomed by directors general and managing directors. The minister viewed ploughing  demonstration, of tractors of 50, 60 and 80 Horse Power and power tillers and inspected spare parts of 15 HP diesel engines and power-tillers and thrashers manufactured by Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries and gave necessary instructions.


(5) Myanmar agricultural delegation leaves for ROK

YANGON, 25 Aug- At the invitation of Minister of Agriculture of Republic of Korea, Myanmar agriculture delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin left here for ROK by air yesterday evening.

The Myanmar delegation will study agriculture work in ROK and will attend 25th Asia and Pacific Regional Meeting, sponsored by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, to be held in Yokohama, Japan. The delegation was seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Deputy Ministers for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, Japanese Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori, Korean Ambassador Mr Chung Junggum and the directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. the delegation comprises Acting Director-General of Agricultural Planning Department U Tin Htut Oo, Deputy Director-General of Agricultural Mechanization Department U Mya Thein and General Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Aung Aung.


(6) CCDAC Secretary meets officials of central work groups

YANGON, 25 Aug-The Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and secretaries of the central work groups held a coordination meeting at the hall of Myanmar Police Force this morning.

Present were Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, secretaries of the central work groups, departmental officials, presidents of Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association and Border Areas Development Association and CCDAC Office. At the meeting, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win gave a speech.

Joint-Secretary of CCDAC Police Col Kham Aung reported on implementation of the decisions of the CCDAC meeting. Then, officials reported on their respective sectors.

Later, the secretary of CCDAC explained matters related to reports presented by officials.


(7) Work continues to put Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne

YANGON, 25 Aug- Devotees including members of the Sangha, nuns and people paid reverence to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township today.

Engineers and employees of Myanma Railways and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise e are working hard to convey Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne of Mindhamma Hill under the close supervision of Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung. Measures are being taken to raise the Image up to four feet above the retaining wall, to place the B-Frame, for conveying the Image from the retaining wall up to the foot of the throne. Tracks are being laid from the frame to the foot of the throne. "Wut" Associations recited the "parittas" from 7 am to 10 PM. Donations received for the funds of the Image from S August to date totaled K 27,313,167.


(8) Sayadaws leave for missionary work abroad

YANGON, 25 Aug- Six Sayadaws led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Suriyabhivamsa, left here for foreign countries by air this evening to carry out missionary work there. The Sayadaws were seen off at the airport by Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Sobhita, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and officials.


(9) Duty on first five-year plan of 15-year drug addicts eradication assigned to officials in Yangon East District

YANGON, 25 Aug- Yangon East District Peace and Development Council held a ceremony to assign duty on implementation of the first five-year plan of the Yangon East District 15-year drug addicts eradication plan to officials at Thingangyun Township Peace and Development Council Office this morning.

Present were district authorities, members of the township committees for drug abuse control, school heads, township level officials, teachers, well-wishers, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Fire Brigades and Union Solidarity and Development Association totalling over 500.

Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Chairman of the district committee for drug abuse control Lt-Col Aung Pyay gave a speech and assigned duty on implementation of the first-five year plan to chairmen of township committees for drug abuse control.

Then, township committees presented cash towards the funds of the District CDAC. Next, In-charge of Drug Addicts Treatment and Research Unit Dr Ba Thaung and First Assistant Dr Chit Ko Ko explained process of the plan.


(10) Soe Kyaw Naing leading in second round of Myanmar London Golf Tour

YANGON, 25 Aug - The First Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001 LONDON organized by GOLF TOUR Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar Professional Golfers Association and sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, continued for the second round at Bagan Resort Golf Club in Mandalay Division this morning.

Present were President of MGF Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, guests and spectators. After the second round of the Professional Division, Soe Kyaw Naing led with 140 (68+72). Win Naing Tun also retained his second position and was joined by Win Aung and Min Lwin Oo both of whom fired an even par 72. Former champion Win Naing Tun fired- 144 strokes after the second round and Aung Win 146. In the Amateur Division, Yin Htwe fired a brilliant one under 71 to take over the lead from Min Naing who slipped to a 74. Zaw Zaw Lat followed them at the third place with 147 strokes, Zaw Zin Win (Han Golf Masters) 148, Zaw Paing 0O 148, Nanda Kyaw 148 and Win Htwe Hlaing 153.

Co-sponsors of the tour are Tiger Beer, Yangon Airways, Cannon, Star Cola, Kaytumadi Dynasty Hotel and Wilson. The tour is being organized by Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd. The tour is being held with the aims to raise the standard of Myanmar golf, to turn out golfers of new generation, to promote friendship among golfers and to enable them to be on a par with those from other nations. The third round of the tour continues tomorrow.


(11) Drug traffickers punished

YANGON, 25 Aug- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, local battalion, Myitkyina Anti-Drug Squad and MPF, acting on information, laying in wait at a bus terminal in Ward 5, Seikmu Village, Phakant Township, Kachin State, searched the fruit baskets and cabbage bags of Ma Bauk on 15 January 1999.

The authorities found 95 packets of raw opium weighing 142.897 kilos in her possession. Further information led to the arrest of Than Swe, Tha Oo and Lukat who were involved in the drug trafficking. A case was opened against Ma Bauk, 35, daughter of U Sein Lwutoo, of Edin Ward, Myitkyina; Than Swe, S1, son of U Chit Soe, South Myoma Ward, Hopin, Mohnyin Township; Tha Oo, 36, son of U Tin Aung, of the same address and Lukat, 38, son of U Tan Bel, of Konzu Village, Phekhon Township under

Section 15/19 (A)/ 21 by Phakant Township Police Station. Ma B auk was sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and three years' imprisonment under Section 15 to serve separately, Lukat to 30 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/2 1, Tha Oo to 20 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/21 and three years' imprisonment under Section 15 to serve separately, and Than Swe to 20 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A)121 by Myitkyina District Court on 20 July 2000.


(12) 32 Pwintbyu Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 25 Aug- Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pwintbyu Township, Magwe Division. Thirty-two members of Pwintbyu Township NLD, Magwe Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pwintbyu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 18 march 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
