(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Ukraine

YANGON, 24 Aug-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Leonid D Kuchma President of the Republic of Ukraine, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Ukraine which falls on 24 August 2000.


(2) Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe receives Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of LPDR

YANGON 23 Aug- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe received Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic Mr Somsavat Lengsavad and party at Credentials Hall of the Pyithu Hluttaw Building this morning.

Also present at the call were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development- Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung. Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Laotian Ambassador Mr Ly Bounkham.


(3) Work coordination meeting No 3/2000 on development of MAI held

YANGON, 23 Aug-Work coordination meeting No 3/ 2000 on development of Myanmar Airways International of the Ministry of Transport was held at the Ministry of Transport this afternoon, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were the ministers, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, Chairman of Board of Directors of MAI and members.

Minister Brig-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on flight hours of MAI from April to July, passengers, cargoes, condition of income and expenditure, flights of Yangon-Bangkok, Yangon-Singapore, Yangon-Kuala Lumpur and Yangon-Hong Kong and measures being undertaken by MAI. Chairman of Board of Directors of MAI U Maung Maung Ohn reported on implementation of the resolutions of the previous meeting. Those present took part in the discussions.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said performance of MAI has gradually developed according to the reports of the minister and officials. He urged the officials to make sustained efforts to win the trust of the passengers and to have reputation for its services, hospitality and management. He spoke of the need to encourage the increase of tourist arrivals through other airlines as endeavours are being made for increasing the number of passengers in MAI.

He said development of tourism industry will contribute to not only progress of the State but also of national hoteliers and tour operators in the private sector. That is why emphasis is being laid on promotion of tourism industry, he added. The Secretary-l called for development of MAI and promotion of tourism industry.

(4) Leading Committee for Organizing Eighth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition meets

YANGON, 23 Aug-The Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions and representatives of States and Divisions held a meeting at National Theatre this afternoon.

Chairman of the Leading Committee member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than delivered an address.

Vice-Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt said some of the nations of the world are facing near disappearance of their traditions and cultures resulting from the penetration of western culture. However, Myanmar has preserved its traditions and culture since yore. The State Peace and Development Council is not only preserving the traditions and culture at present but also organizing Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions annually to enable the future generation youths to preserve them. As in the previous years, the competitions will be held on a grand scale in accord with the objectives. It is learned that the representatives from the States and Divisions had already coordinated with doyen artistes on rules, principles, directions of the competitions. The States and Divisions are urged to send judges to the competitions who are actually skilled in their respective fields of the fine arts, he said. After attending to their needs, commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave the concluding speech.

The commander and party inspected posters, paintings and badges on the competitions and invitation cards to the competitions.


(5) Minister for Labor meets Ambassador of Israel

YANGON, 23 Aug-Minister for Labor Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe met Ambassador of Israel Mr Baruch Ram at his office this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Labor Brig-Gen Win Sein and heads of department.

Industry-l Minister meets Thai, Singapore entrepreneurs

YANGON, 23 Aug-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met with Chairman Mr Thanwat Thanathipmonthon of Bangkok-based TNT Asia Limited Company and party at his office at 1.30 pm today. He also met with Chairman Mr Choo Ming Chen of East Bourne Chemical Industry Pte Ltd of Singapore and party at 3 pm and Chairman Ms Luxana Jariyawatsakul of Bangkok-based Regina International Co Ltd and party at 3.3Q pm at the same venue. Also present were Director-General U Tin Hlaing of Directorate of Industries, Director General U San Kyi of Industrial Supervisory and Inspection Department, Managing Director U Kyaw Myint of Myanma Foodstuff Industries and Head of Office of the Ministry U Myint Swe.

YANGON, 23 Aug-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Vietnamese Ambassador Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and party at his office this afternoon. YANGON, 23 Aug-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met President of Dong New Technology Import and Export Zhuhai Corporation Mr Huang Yi Xiang and party at his office this afternoon. Deputy Minister meets foreign guests

YANGON, 23 Aug- Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo met Mr Hiroaki Nakamura and Ms Yuko Sasa of Pacific Consultants International (PCI), Japan and General Manager Mr Mototoshi Kakiuchi of PCI Office based in Thailand at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road at 11 am today. Also present on the occasion were responsible officials of the Ministry of Health.

(6) Minister attends conclusion ceremony of Diplomacy Course No 1

YANGON, 23 Aug-The Diplomacy Course No 1 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded at the Wunzinminyaza Hall of Shindithapamauk Building this morning. It was attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible officials, course instructors and trainees. The minister made a speech on the occasion and presented certificates to the trainees. Altogether 108 trainees attended the eight-week course at Mahothada Hall from 3 July to 23 August.


(7) Home Affairs Ministry opens On-job Training Course

YANGON, 23 Aug-On-job Training Course No 2/ 2000 of the Ministry of Home Affairs opened at Press Scrutiny and Registration Division at 4, Wingaba Road, Bahan Township, here this morning. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing gave the opening address at the ceremony. The minister urged the trainees to strive to possess leadership and administrative abilities in order to dutifully discharge their work and to successfully realize the ministry’s aims.


(8) Minister inspects construction of roads in Tongue, Phi

YANGON 23 Aug-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and party inspected Indaing-Chaungphyu road constructed by Tongue Township Development Committee in Tongue, Vegetable plantation and preparation for Kandawgyi Garden yesterday morning. At the briefing hall, executive officer reported to the minister on their activities. The minister and party inspected construction of Wedaunk-Shwelaung constructed by Ottwin Township Development Committee in Ottwin and Gonete-Yaypya road constructed by Phi Township Development Committee in Phi Township and gave instructions to officials.


(9) Minister tours Magway and Bago Divisions

YANGON, 23 Aug-Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, accompanied by officials of Myanma Timber Enterprise, Forest Department and Forest Products Joint-Venture Corporation, inspected timber extraction work in Manually Division, Shan State (North), Agway Division and Ago Division (West) from 17 to 22 August. The minister together with the Commander of North-East Command met officials in Shan State (North). Minister U Aung Phone inspected offices of the forest department in Nawnghkio and Kyaukme Townships.
The minister met officials at Kyukok (Pansa) and Muse. They discussed matters pertaining to wood-based products and border trade. The minister and inspected forest plantation in Kutkai. Minister U Aung Phone inspected Botanical Gardens in PyinOoLwin,Mandalay Division. The minister arrived back here yesterday evening.

(10) Chief Justice, Attorney-General inspect courts and law offices in Agway Division

YANGON, 23 Aug-Chief Justice U Aung Toe and Attorney-General U Tha Tun, accompanied by Deputy Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt of Supreme Court (Manually) and officials of the Supreme Court and Attorney-General’s Office met Division, District and Township judges and law officers in Agway on 19 August and also met judges and law officers in Minbu on 20 August.

The chief justice and party inspected courts and law offices. The chief justice and the attorney-general attended the inauguration of Minbu District and Township Court and the chief justice formally opened the courts on 20 August.


(11) Holding National Seminar on Sustainable Tourism Development in Myanmar coordinated

YANGON, 23 Aug-A coordination meeting on holding National Seminar on Sustainable Tourism Development in Myanmar to be held at Inya Lake Hotel from 30 to 31 August took place at the meeting hall of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism at 11 am today.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director U Kyi Tun and officials.

Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, ESCAP, WTO and experts of tourism services of Thailand, the People’s Republic of China and Japan will participate in the seminar.

Representatives of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Rail Transportation and Myanmar Tourism Promotion Board, airlines and tourism services and hoteliers will attend the seminar.


(12) Heroin, raw opium and stimulant tablets seized in Chitin State

YANGON, 23 Aug-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information searched the house of U Chin Wu of Ward 1, Lweje in Chitin State and arrested him together with 24 kilos of raw opium on 7 August.

Then, the team searched the house of Ma Myan Khway and arrested Ma Myan Khway and Hlo Law Kyan (a) Law Lu of Ward 2, Lweje together with 5.635 kilos of heroin, 22.2 kilos of raw opium and 5,490 stimulant tablets. Action was taken against them in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(13) 25 Yamethin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 23 Aug-Twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Manually Division. Twenty-five members of Yamethin Township NLD, Manually Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub- commission and the party concerned on 14 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
