(1) Commander inspects regional development and agricultural work in Taikkyi Township

YANGON, 21 Aug - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace . and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, together with Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and division-level departmental officials, inspected regional development and agricultural work in Taikkyi Township, Yangon North District, this morning. The Commander met with local farmers and national agricultural entrepreneurs at Uto-Kyaln region where Yangon City Development Committee is working the land.

Member of Yangon City Development Committee Col Thaung Wai reported on agricultural and livestock breeding matters, completion of monsoon paddy cultivation, the growing of vegetables and the breeding of 5,000 ducks and the breeding of fish at 50 fish ponds out of 600 targeted fish ponds.

Daw Khin Sabai Kyi of Fortune Intentional Ltd reported on cultivation of sugarcane in Taikkyi Township, conditions of sale of sugar-cane to Okkan Sugar Mill and difficulties of cultivation work. The officials of Super One Company reported on conditions of cultivation of sugarcane and arrangements to sell sugar-cane to Okkan Sugar Mill and requirements. Then, the Commander attended to requirements.

In Taikkyi Township, Yangon North District, out of 116,000 targeted acres, 112,534 acres have been placed under monsoon paddy, and 97.01 percent of the target has been achieved. Post monsoon paddy will be cultivated by the end of September. Sugar-cane has been grown on 7,514 acres, and it is targeted that 121,901 tones of sugar will be produced.

The Commander and party- inspected cultivation of monsoon paddy on over 1,300 acres at Uto-KyaIn region by YCDC, cultivation of lemon and, the digging of fish ponds, the operation of the 25-ton rice mill, construction of paddy drier, conditions of breeding of ducks and the thriving paddy fields.


(2) Minister inspects river-water pumping projects in Kyaukse District

YANGON, 21 Aug - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, together with Director General of the Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe, Managing Director of Myanma Cotton and Silk Enterprise Dr Thein Htay and members of Mandalay Division Agricultural Work Coordination Committee, inspected the river-water pumping project in Kin Village, Kyaukse Township, yesterday.

The minister and party inspected water supply by means of pumping water from Zawgyi-River and cultivation of long-staple cotton with the use of pumped water around Kin Village.

In the briefing hall, the director-general of Water Resources Utilization Department reported on water supply for over 15,000 acres of cultivated land with 30 river water pumping camps in Kyaukse, Singaing, TadaU and Myittha Townships in Kyaukse District, probability of extension of cultivation of long-staple cotton and the growing of cotton on 50 acres at the water pumping camp of Kin Village. The minister and officials discussed the establishment of river-water pumping camps near Zawgyi River and possibility of extension of cotton sown  acreage. Chairman of Kyaukse District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein took part in the discussions.

The minister met with local farmers and departmental employees and gave instructions on the sale of cotton. Afterwards, the minister inspected Ngapyaung Diversion Dam. Then, the minister and party inspected cotton plantations at Lunkyaw Farm, and discussed water supply with officials. Next, the minister inspected Thindwe Diversion Dam.

The minister and party later inspected the sites chosen for construction of the cotton gin in Kume and Myittha Townships. The minister and party proceeded to Myittha Cotton Mill. General Manager U Sein Win reported on efforts to meet the production target of cotton in 2000-2001 and matters related to cotton, cotton seeds and cotton seed oil and spare parts to be replaced in the mill. Then, the minister inspected the mill. Afterwards, the minister and party went to the site chosen for construction of Myanma Agricultural Equipment Factory of Agricultural Mechanization Department at Ingon, Kyaukse Township.

Managing Director of AMD U Win Maw reported on construction of the factory. The minister gave instructions on construction work and inspected the site. Myanma Agricultural Equipment Factory will manufacture labour-saving, time-saving and money-saving farm equipment, 16 horsepower engines and power tillers, three and half horsepower engines and paddy harvesters.


(3) Minister inspects factories in Yangon

YANGON, 21 Aug - Minister for Industry- 1 U Aung Thaung inspected factories in Yangon today. Accompanied by Deputy Ministers for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, and heads of departments, the minister inspected No 2 Match Factory of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries in Mingala Taungnyunt Township in the morning. He inspected the major renovation work to transform the Match Factory into a bicycle factory.

Personnel concerned should work systematically in implementing the project which is a long-term plan, stressed the minister.

The minister and party then inspected storage of paper for export. At the meeting hall, the minister heard a report on progress in implementing the project, presented by officials.

At a sweet factory of Myanma Food Industries in Tarmway Township, the minister and party supervised installation of new machinery, reformation of the organizational set up and storage of goods. As it is a food production factory, staff should carry out their work with special care and in accord with the rules, the minister said. After looking into the requirements presented by officials, the minister observed the main raw materials and packaging system.

In the afternoon, the minister and party attended the opening of a work proficiency course conducted by Myanma Ceramic Industries in Insein Township. The minister gave a speech at the ceremony; The course in-charge briefed the minister and party on salient points of the course.

Sixteen trainees are at- tending the ten-week course. At asbestos brick factory, the minister and party inspected production, crushing, distribution and storage sectors. The minister and party also inspected raw materials.

(4) Minister receives President of CMAC

YANGON, 21 Aug-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung received President Mr Ren Hongbin and party of China National Construction & Agricultural Machinery Import & Export Corporation and party at his office this evening. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, directors general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

YANGON, 21 Aug-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met President Mr Likazj Akramuddin Ahmed of Standard Bank Ltd, Bangladesh, and party at 1 PM and General Manager Mr Adrian K H Tai of Myanmar Ltd Lufthansa Service Ltd and party at 2 PM separately at his office today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, DirectorGenera1 of Trade Department U Nyunt Aye and Director General of Border Trade Department Col Nay Win, Managing Director U Min Hla Aung of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading and officials.


(6) Chairman of CSSTB meets Australian Ambassador

YANGON, 21 Aug- Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt met Australian Ambassador Mr Trevor David Wilson at his office at 2.30 PM today. Also present were members of CSSTB U Nyunt Swe, U Aung Myint, U Hla Myint Oo, U Kaung Nyunt and Director U Myint Thein of Civil Service Selection and Training Department.


(7) Minister inspects development of Thakayta Wharf

YANGON, 21 Aug-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Managing Director U Khin Maung Kyi of Myanma Five Star Line and officials, arrived at Thakayta Wharf of MFSL this evening.

The managing director reported to the minister on fish and prawn breeding in the ponds of the area covered by Thakayta Wharf, cultivation of vegetables, progress of work in building the control office, conditions of the container yard, the loading of MV Thanlwin and MV Haka vessels, strength of the vessels and sanitation work. The minister and officials gave necessary instructions.

(8) Prize presentation ceremony of Dhammacakka reciting competition held

YANGON, 21 Aug-The prize presentation ceremony for the first Dhammacakka reciting competition Western Command was held at Bandoola Hal1 of the Command Headquarters in Sittway on 19 August. Chairman of Rakhine State Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Bhaddanta Canda administered the Five Precepts. The wife of the Commander and the wife of the Deputy Commander presented prizes to winning associations. Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe presented the first prize to the association-l of Western Command. Then, the commander and wife and officials offered _soon_ to members of the Sangha and shared merits gained for good deeds.


(9) Lao delegation visits Hlinethaya Industrial Town

YANGON, 21 Aug-The Lao delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Mr Somsavat Lengsavad visited Hlinethaya Industrial Town, Maha Bandoola Bridge and Yuzana Garden City today.

The delegation arrived here to attend the fifth Meeting of the Myanmar-Lao Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation to be held in Yangon on 21 and 22 August. Accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Ambassador of Lao PDR Mr Ly Bounkham and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they arrived at Kanaung Hall in Hlinethaya Industrial Town and were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and personnel concerned. Deputy Minister U Tint Swe explained projects being implemented by the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development. He also replied to queries raised by the Laotian Deputy Prime Minister.

Afterwards, U Tint Swe presented gifts to Deputy Prime Minister Mr Somsavat Lengsavad. The Laotian guests then visited a shoe factory, a garment factory, the FMI City and the Hline Golf Course Housing Project in Hlinethaya Industrial Town. Later, they Garden City in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, officials of Yuzana Co Ltd explained housing projects being undertaken by the company. They left the city after studying the scale- models of the housing projects.


(10) Ministry of CPT opens three work efficiency courses

YANGON, 21 Aug-Electric and Electronics Concepts for Line Transmission Course, TXM-100 Engineering Course and Facsimile Operator Training Course opened at the training school of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this morning.

Minister for Communications; Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin gave a speech. Also present on the occasion were the director-general of Directorate of Telecommunication Department, general managers and heads of divisions of Myanma Posts and Telecommunication, the principal of the training school, course instructors and trainees.

At Thanlyin International Satellite Station, the minister heard a report on the functions of the station and farming being conducted in its compound. The minister gave suggestions. During inspection of the International Maritime Radio Communication Station, officials briefed the minister on the GMDSS. VHF-HF and other systems. At Toegyaung Galay Ground Satellite Station, the minister heard a report on functions of the station and farming activity.

The chief engineer also explained data communication system. At the factory which is producing concrete posts for installing communication links, the minister inspected the process of production work. He also heard a report on points of the factory, presented by officials.

(11) Myanmar delegation leaves for Indonesia

YANGON, 21 Aug-A Myanmar delegation led by Director-General Col Than Swe of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races, Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs left for Indonesia this afternoon to attend the Second Meeting of the ASEAN Task Force on Social Safety Nets (ATFSSN) and ASEAN-Australia Workshop on Social Safety Nets to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, departmental heads and families saw them off at the airport. The delegation comprises Director-General Col Than Swe and Deputy Director U Bon Theim of Agriculture Planning Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.


(12) CSO Director-General leaves for Japan

YANGON, 21 Aug-Director-General of Central Statistical Organization, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development Dr Sein Tin left for Japan by air this morning to attend the meeting of the Heads of National Statistical

Offices of East-Asian Countries and Seminar on Evolution of Official Statistics and Its Impact on Management and Training in NSOs which will be held in Tokyo, Japan from August 23 to 28, 2000.


(13) Mindhamma Hill continues to draw crowds of devotees

YANGON, 21 Aug - Mindhamma Hill and its surrounding area in Insein Township, Yangon Division, today was crowded with monks, nuns, laypersons and tourists visiting the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image. Monks, nuns and members of religious associations recited parittas all day long.

On 19 August, the work to convey the 500-ton marble image from the decorated wagon to the retaining wall was completed under the close supervision of Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung.

As the first step to lift the Image onto the hill has been completed, the technicians and the workers are continuing their work to convey the image. To this date, donations for the Image amounted to aver K 24.121 million.

(14) Prizes presented to outstanding women to mark year 2000 Myanmar Women’s Day

YANGON, 21 Aug- Yangon Division Working Committee for Women’s Affairs held the prize presentation ceremony for outstanding women in Yangon Division to mark the year 2000 Myanmar Women’s Day at the office of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council this morning.

Present were members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, members of Division and District Working Committees for Women’s Affairs, officials of Sub committees, prize winners and guests.

Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint gave a speech and Chair man of Yangon Division WCWA Commissioner of Yangon Division General Administration Department U Thein Swe explained the purpose of the prize presentation.

Then, Secretary Lt-Col Kyaw Tint presented prizes to Ma Kay Khaing Win for her outstanding performance in education, Ma Zargyi Win in sports, Ma Hnin Hnin Thein in fire fighting, Ma Tin Thu Zar Lwin in Red Cross and Ma Nilar Shun Le in children’s art.


(15)Refresher Course No 3 for Engineers of YCDC concludes

YANGON, 21 Aug-Refresher Course No 3 for Engineers of Yangon City Development Committee concluded at the employee training school of YCDC in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning. Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung addressed the ceremony.

Also present were Joint Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win, member of YCDC U Aung Soe, heads and deputy heads of departments under YCDC, the principal of the training school, course instructors, officials and guests. Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung made a speech. Then, he presented certificates to trainees and prizes to outstanding trainees. Altogether 49 trainees attended the four-week course.

Second Inter-Hotel Soccer Tournament opens

YANGON, 21 Aug-A ceremony to open the second Inter-Hotel Soccer Tournament was held at Padomma Sports Ground in Sangyoung Township this evening.

Among the spectators were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Chair man of the Organizing Committee for the Tournament Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, guests and soccer teams. Director U Aung Myin Thu of DHT opened the tournament. Then, Chairman U Khin Maung Latt gave a speech. Afterwards, Traders Hotel played against Sedona Hotel. The tournament will continue up to 2 September. The third place match and the final match will be held at Padomma Sports Ground.

Second Winner Cup Open Chess Tournament begins

YANGON, 21 Aug-A ceremony to open the Second Winner Cup Open Chess Tournament was held at Thida Hall of Fire Services Department this afternoon. Present on the occasion were officials of Sports and Physical Education Department, President of Myanmar Chess Federation U Kyaw Than and executives, chess players and spectators. Managing Director U Aung Zaw Myint of Winner Computer Group presented K 200,000 to MCF. President U Kyaw Than opened the tournament. The prize presentation ceremony will be held on 30 August evening.

Mayors Trophy Boxing Championship on 25-27

Aug YANGON, 21 Aug.  The Mayor_ s Trophy Boxing Championship will be held at Aung San Gymnasium from 25 to 27 August. Those wishing to take part in the championship from Pinweight to Middle weight of the A Class and the under-18 are to undergo medical check-up at 8 am on 24 August after reporting to the Secretary of Myanmar Boxing Federation at Youth Training Centre, not later than 23 August.

Eighth C-in-C (Navy)_s Shield Boxing Championship opens

YANGON, 21 Aug- The Eighth Commander-in-Chief (Navy)_s Shield Boxing Championship was opened at Thiha Thura Tun Tin Hall of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command this afternoon. Acting Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Captain Tha Hsan gave a speech and opened the championship. Also present on the occasion were officers and Tatmadaw members of Commander-in-Chief (Navy)_s Office and Yangon Station, boxers and family members. Altogether nine boxing teams are taking part in the championship which will last 24 August.

Prizes presented to winners in ISD Myanma Thaing Tournament, Pencak Silat Tournament

YANGON, 21 Aug- The prize presentation ceremony for the,l7th Inter-State/Division Myanma Thaing Tournament and the First Pencak Silat Tournament was held at Aung San Gymnasium today. Officials presented prizes to respective winners.

Vice-President of Myanmar Thaing Federation U Tin Oo presented prizes to winners in the 45-50 kilos class. Then, General Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik presented championship shield to Mandalay Division team.


(17) Drug trafficker gets 20 years’  imprisonment

YANGON, 21 Aug? A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and local police force, acting on information, searched a van with number plate Tha/4127 on Nyaung-bin Village Road in Pinlaung Township at 8 pm on 7 March.

They seized 10 packets of opium weighing 15.513 kilos from the knapsack of passenger Ta Kee. Pinlaung Police Station took action against Ta Kee, son of U Pan Tee of Ta-khaukkhun Village, Nyaung-kyaw Villagetract, Hsihseng Township, under the Section 15/19(A)of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Taunggyi West District Court sentenced the drug trafficker to 20 years_ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on 15 June 2000


(18) 35 Ngazun NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 21 Aug-Thirty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division.

Thirty-five members of Ngazun Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 15 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
