(1) Secretary-1 lays cornerstone for construction of Tipitaka Lankara Dhammayon in Mingaladon Township

YANGON, 12 Aug- A ceremony to lay cornerstones for construction of Tipitaka Lankara Dhammayon of Tipitaka Maha Gandayonkyaungtaik in Shwenatha Model Village, Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division, was held at the Kyaungtaik at 8 am today, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The first session of ceremony to lay cornerstones for construction of Tipitaka Lankara Dhammayon. of Tipitaka Maha Gandayonkyaungtaik was held. The Secretary- I and party received the Five Precepts from Tipitakadhara Dhamma Bandagarika Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D).

Then, members of the Sangha recited the "parittas". Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented offertories to members of the Sangha.

Afterwards, Tipitakadhara Dhamma Bandagarika Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D),delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. The second session of the ceremony to lay corner stones for construction of Tipitaka Lankara Dhammayon of Tipitaka Maha Gandayonkyaungtaik was held.

Adviser of the State Calendar Advisory Committee U Kyaw read the stone plaque. Then, the Secretary- 1 presented gold casket with nine precious gems to Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D) and placed the casket into the centre of foundation.

At the auspicious time, the Secretary-1, Minister Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa laid the cornerstones. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt placed the stone plaque on the foundation. Then, Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D) and Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party sprinkled scented water on the foundation.
After the ceremony, the Secretary- 1 and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony. Later, the Secretary-l heard the reports on arrangements for construction of Tipitaka Lankara Dhammayon presented by Managing Director of ACE Construction U Tint Hsan.


(2) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha), development of Hlinethaya

YANGON, 12 Aug-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office, arrived at the project site of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) in Insein Township this morning.

At the briefing hall, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt heard a report on progress of work and the salient points of the project presented by Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Superintending Engineer U Myint Lwin of PW on the work of putting the finishing touches on the approach structure and the main bridge, and Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa on the surfacing of the four-lane approach road (on Hlinethaya side) with tar and extension of four- lane Shwepyitha Road (Anawrahta Road), Hlinethaya Township.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave necessary instructions to officials. Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the work of putting the finishing touches on the bridge.

Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) links Insein and Shwepyitha Townships. Its upper structure is a steel framework, and lower structure is of reinforced concrete type. The four-lane bridge is 3415 feet long and 52 feet and six inches wide. It includes six feet-pedestrian lanes on both sides, and can bear 60 ton trucks.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party-proceeded to and arrived at Battery Factory of Proven Technology Industry Co Ltd in Industrial Zone where they were welcomed by Chairman of the company U Tun Myint and officials.

Officials conducted Secretary- I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party round the factory. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the posh buildings in the township.

Afterwards, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected construction of approach road to the Bridge, and extension of the Road being undertaken by Yangon City Development Committee. Later, Secretary- I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at the junction of Shwepyitha Road (Anawrahta Road) and Yangon-Pathein Road and gave instructions on reducing of traffic jams to officials.

Secretary- 1- Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went to the junction of Yangon-Pathein and Yangon-Nyaungdon Roads, and heard a report on extension of Yangon-Nyaungdon Road (Hlinethaya Section) linking to the approach road of Aungzeya Bridge presented by officials.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then inspected work being undertaken for finishing touches of Aungzaya Bridge and left the site in the after noon.

(3) Cash donation for construction of Thabinnyu Stupa

YANGON, 12 Aug-The 12th cash donation ceremony for construction of Thabinnyu Stupa was held at the worksite of the Stupa in Mayangon Township this afternoon, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary of Work Committee Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung reported on progress of work and Joint Secretary Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko on donations and expenditure. The Secretary-l then gave instructions.  The Secretary-l and the ministers accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors. The Secretary-l and party inspected construction of Thabinnyu Stupa, and paid obeisance to ancient Buddha images.


(4) Ceremony to mark success of non-stop reciting Maha Pathana Desana to welcome Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image held

YANGON, 12 Aug-A ceremony to mark the success of non-stop reciting Maha Pathana Desana at Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township from 4 to 12 August to welcome Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image was held at the hill this morning.

The ceremony was opened with recitation of Namo Tassa three times. Chairman of Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kosalla administered the Five Precepts to the congregation. Then, members of the Sangha recited the Metta Sutta, and officials and well-wishers presented offertories to members of the Sangha.

Afterwards, Staff Officer of Yangon Division Religious Affairs Department U San Thin Hlaing recited the Patthan Yaunggyedawbwe Gahta and Literary Assistant of Religious Affairs Department U Thura Aungsumingalar Aung Boa. Sayadaw_ of Insein Township Ywama Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Tilokabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Supervised by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, staff of Myanma Railways are carrying out the work to convey the Image from Mingalar Natpanyahta (train) onto the throne on Mindhamma Hill. The Wut Associations recited the religious verses from 1 pm to 7 pm alternately.

The hill was crowded with people and members of the Sangha paying obeisance to the Image. The Finance Subcommittee opened a donation centre on the hill, and donations to date totaled K 2,136,358.

(5) Tatmadaw families and well-wishers donate rice, cash to Cholia Muslim Home for the Aged in Thingangyun Township

YANGON, 12 Aug- Families of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated rice and cash to Cholia Muslim Home for the Aged at Ward B in Thingangyun Township at 9 am today.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyay, township authorities, officials of the Home for the Aged, well-wishers and guests.

First, the Preacher of the Tamway Muslim Mosqus recited the Koran Chairman of the Home for the Aged Haji U Thein Maung extended greetings. Then, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and Captain Naval Staff Captain Kyaw Tin Hla presented rice donated by Tatmadaw families to Haji U Thein Maung.

Afterwards, well-wishers and departments donated rice, edible oil, salt, medicines and cash to officials of the Home for the Aged. Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung gave a speech.

After the ceremony, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo cordially met elder women the Home for the Aged.


(6) Secretary-2 inspects fish and prawn breeding work and Lagwanpyin Dam Project

YANGON, 12 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected fish and prawn breeding work and Lagwanpyin Dam Project in Yangon and Bago Divisions today.

The Secretary-2, accompanied by Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe and officials, left for Wanbawdat Bridge at the border of Yangon and Bago Divisions.

Chairman of Myanmar Pyithahay KN Company U Tin Win reported on the building of fish ponds and fish and prawn breeding work along Yangon-Bago Highway at the border of Yangon and Bago Divisions.

Director of the Irrigation Department (Yangon) U Tin Maung Win reported on assistance being provided for the building of fish ponds.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions and inspected fish breeding work and fish ponds. Afterwards, the Secretary2 and party went to Innchan Village, Thayagon Villagetract, Bago Township. They inspected Ohway Garden of U Soe Than Min.

The owner and officials reported on the growing of fruits. Next, the Secretary-2 and party proceeded to Lagwanpyin Dam Project near Thamigalay Village in Hlegu Township at the border of Yangon and Bago Divisions and inspected the implementation of the project.

In the briefing hall of the project, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint reported on facts about Lagwanpyin Dam Project to be implemented by the Irrigation Department (Yangon Division). Director of the Irrigation Department (Yangon Division) U Tin Maung Win reported on the designation of the site for the project and progress of work in implementing the project. After attending to their requirements, the Secretary-2 said that Myanmar being an agrarian country, all-round efforts are being made for the development of the agriculture sector.

Lagwanpyin Dam Project is now being implemented, and all are required to carry out the tasks of respective departments seriously, not perfunctorily and to strive to complete the implementation of the project as early as possible. Lagwanpyin Dam is being built on Lagwanpyin Creek, which can prevent about 9,000 acres of low-lying areas between Yangon-Bago motor road and railroad in Hlegu Township, from being flooded In addition, up to 22,000 acres of fields can be placed under monsoon paddy; summer paddy and other crops can also be grown on about 10,000 acres by pumping water into the fields and by directly feeding water through irrigation canals.

Lagwanpyin Dam will be 61 feet high and 5,180 feet long; the storage capacity of the dam will be 148,800 acre-feet.

The Secretary-2 and party left the project site and inspected the. building of fish ponds with the use of heavy machinery near Ahtaru Bridge by Yangon-Bago motor road in Hmawby Township.

(7) Ninth ASEAN Youth Day Meeting successfully ends

YANGON, 12 Aug- The third and final day session of the Ninth ASEAN Youth Day Meeting, hosted for the first time by Myanmar, was held at the Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Chairman of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Youth (ASY) Dato_ Paduka Hj Talib Bin Hj Berudin, senior official of ASEAN Secretariat Mr Yong Chanthalangsy, Chairman of the Working Committee Director-General U Sit Myaing of Social Welfare Department, leaders and delegates of 10 ASEAN member nations Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar and observers secretaries and executives of States and Divisions of Union Solidarity and Development Associations.

Chairman of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Youth (ASY) Dato_ Paduka Hj Talib Bin Hj Berudin and leader of the Myanmar delegation Director U Than Tun of ASEAN Affairs Department acted as the meeting chairman and the vice-chairman.

The Meeting Chairman gave a speech. Senior official of ASEAN Secretariat Mr Yong Chanthalangsy read out the meeting agenda and sought approval of delegations. The meeting successfully ended at 3 30 pm.

According to the decisions of the meeting, the Third ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Youth will be held in the Union of Myanmar in year 2000 and the Tenth ASEAN Youth Day Meeting in Cambodia in 2001. This morning, delegates to the meeting visited Shwedagon Pagoda.

In the evening, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa hosted a dinner at Karaweik Palace in honour of the ASEAN delegates. At the dinner, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa presented souvenirs to leaders of the delegations and members.

Executives of States and Divisions of Union Solidarity and Development Associations. (8) Myanmar Academy of Medical Sciences holds second meeting

YANGON, 12 Aug-The second meeting of Myanmar Academy of Medical Sciences was held in the meeting hall of the Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street this morning.

Present were Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Ministers Professor Dr Mya Oo and Professor Dr Kyaw Myint. Director of Defence Services Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, directors general, rectors, directors, Chairman of Myanmar Academy of Medical Sciences Dr U Ko Ko and members, officials of the UN agencies, guests and medical scholars. Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said that all the members of Myanmar Academy of Medical Sciences are urged to work hard to realize the noble objectives of the Academy; to implement its objectives and working programmes, four sub-committees, namely, Health System Development Subcommittee, Research and technology Development Sub- committee, Human Resources Development Sub- committee, have been formed. Afterwards, the minister meeting with the medical scholars. Then, the meeting was held according to the agenda, and ended with concluding remarks by Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo in the evening.

(9) Profit sharing agreement on zinc production signed

YANGON, 12 Aug-The No 1 Mining Enterprise of Ministry of Mines and Myanmar Mayflower Mining Enterprise Ltd signed an agreement on zinc production in Maw Khee (Wale) region, Myawady Township, Kayin State, at the Thiri Yadana Hall of the-ministry yesterday evening.

It was attended by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Deputy Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office U Set Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, departmental officials, Managing Director U Kyaw Win of Myanmar Mayflower Mining Enterprise Ltd and members of Board of ; Directors and guests.

First, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint made a speech. Then, Managing Director U Saw Lwin of No I Mining Enterprise and Managing Director U Kyaw Win of Myanmar Mayflower Mining Enterprise Ltd expressed thanks, signed and-exchanged the agreement. Later, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint presented a permit to Managing Director U Kyaw Win and the ceremony came to an end.


(10) Seminar on Trends of Global Business and Myanmar held

YANGON, 12 Aug-A Seminar on the Trends of Global Business and Myanmar sponsored by Business Information Group was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning. It was at- tended by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Strategic Studies Maj- Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig- Gen Kyaw Hsan, department the officials, scholars, members of BIG and guests.

First, Managing Director U Pyone Maung Maung of CE Technology Co Ltd presented the paper " Introduction to E-Commerce" . Then he answered the queries.

Afterwards, Professor Dr Tin Soe of Department of Economics, University of Distance Education, presented the paper "The Trends of Global Business and Myanmar " and replied to the queries. Later, Professor Daw Khin Aye Win of Department of Psychology, Yangon University, presented the paper  "Business and Psychology". And she replied to the queries.

Then, Head of Department of the Office of the Strategic Studies Col Thein Swe spoke words of thanks. Finally, editor Daw Nandi of BIG expressed thanks and the seminar came to an end.

(11) 10 Shwedaung Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 12 Aug-Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwedaung Township, Bago Division. Ten members of Shwedaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 3 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(12) Voters of Aunglan, Minhla townships of Thayet District unanimously petition for dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON, 12 Aug-Voters from Aunglan and Minhla Townships, Thayet District, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of NLD at rallies on 24 and 30 June morning.

A total of 12,723 people from nine wards and 24 village-tracts rallied at the sports ground of Basic Education High School No 1 in Aunglan. On behalf of local people, ice-factory owner U Win Maung of Thayettaw Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Video business owner U Khin Maung of Kangyi Ward, on behalf of attendance’s, presented petitions signed by the voters, to member of Aunglan Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyin Ohn.

Altogether, 16,208 people from 67 village-tracts rallied at the sports ground of Pyaloh Village. On behalf of local people, farmer U Aung Soe of Pyaloh Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Farmer U Thein Win of Pyaloh Village, on behalf of attendance’s, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Aunglan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Nyein.

Similarly, 17,283 people from six wards and 27 Villagetract rallied in Myoma Sports Ground in Minhla.

On behalf of local people, bicycle trader U Tin Hla of Ward 3 expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Tint Maung of Ward 5, on behalf of attendance’s, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Minhla Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Law Officer U Pho Tu.

The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan. There are 111,897 eligible voters in Aunglan Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, is 103,296 people or 92.31 per cent.

There are 68,940 eligible voters in Minhla Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, is 56,765 people or 82.34 per cent.
