(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Jamaica

YANGON, 6 Aug-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr P J Patterson, Prime Minister of Jamaica, on the occasion of the Independence Day of Jamaica which falls on 6 August 2000.

YANGON, 5 ,Aug- The conveyance of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board, Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) began on a grand scale at the jetty in Madaya Township on 24 July and the Image arrived at Yadana Shwephaungdaw Jetty in Gyogon, Insein Township, this morning.

On arrival at the jetty in Gyogon, Insein Township, Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and thousands of people heartily welcomed and paid homage to the Image. A ceremony to convey the- Image which spent the night at No 4 mile post of Twantay Canal was held at the venue this morning.

The barge carrying the Image, flanked by the fleet, left Twantay for Yangon. Local people and members of the Sangha from Twantay, Dalla and Seikkyi Khanaungto Townships on both banks of Twantay Canal paid homage to the Image along its route.

At the corner of Hline River and Twantay Canal, a fleet led by leader of Central Committee- for Conveyance of the Image by Waterway Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and party on board Pyigyidagun-3 welcomed the Image.

Thousands of people reciting religious verses and waving miniature religious flags paid homage to the Image at jetties in Seikkan, Kyimyindine, Kamayut, Hline and Mayangon townships. Members of "wut" associations from townships of Yangon Division on both banks of Hline River recited religious verses.

When the Image arrived at the jetty in Gyogon at 8.30 am, Chairman of Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and members of the Sangha, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo s wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife and party paid homage to it.

While the barge carrying the Image was approaching the jetty, artistes of Myanma Music Asiayon and Myanmar Thabin Asiayon sang religious songs with the accompaniment of Mingala drum troupe and Myanma orchestra.

Then, Sayadaws, the Secretary-l, the Secretary-3, the commander and party sprinkled scented water on the Image, followed by the blowing of conch shells and the beating of royal drums and gongs.

After the ceremony the Secretary-l, the Secretary-3 and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers. Artistes sang "Aungzay Paingzay" song in reverence for the Image.

Next, the Secretary-1, the Secretary-3 and party offered vegetarian "soon" to the Chairman Sayadaw and members of the Sangha at the Mingala Mandat.


(3) National Health Committee holds special meeting

YANGON, 5 Aug-A special meeting of National Health Committee was held in the meeting hall of the committee at the Ministry of Health this afternoon, addressed by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The Secretary-l said that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss the programme for conveying South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame into Myanmar and matters related to improving the standard of Myanma traditional medicine.

Through concerted efforts of WHO South-East Asian Regional Office and nations in the region under the leadership of World Health Organization, the and-tobacco movement is being launched by relaying South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame to the nations in Southeast Asian region. Being a member of WHO, Myanmar is to make arrangements for relaying the flame.

Therefore, under the supervision of National Health Committee, systematic arrangements for conveying the flame into Myanmar are to be laid down. Another thing is to discuss matters pertaining to efforts for improving the standard of Myanma traditional medicine.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein explained matters related to South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame, the objectives of relaying the flame, three-week activities to be carried out while the name is kept in, Myanmar, activities being carried out in Myanmar according to the anti-tobacco programme and the winning of the tobacco or health prizes by Writer Theikpan Hmu Tin, Professor U Aung and the Institute of Nursing. Director-General of the Health Department Dr Wan Maung reported on formation of the central committee and subcommittees for activities related to the flame.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Director-General of the Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun reported on the tasks for development of traditional medicine and the holding of the conference of traditional medicine practitioners. Director-General of the Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) Professor Dr Paing Soe explained matters pertaining to research on traditional medicines. Minister U Saw Tun discussed the conducting of research on treatment of western medicine and traditional medicine. Director-General Dr Kyi Soe reported on the decisions of the meeting and sought the approval of the meeting. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Secretary-l.


(4) Secretary-l meets Thai Deputy Prime Minister

Yangon, 5 Aug Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand and party at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today. Also present at the call were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak, Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department and officials.

YANGON, 5 Aug-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Office Brig-Gen Abel met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand and party at the Toungoo Hall of the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road at 2.30 pm today. Also present were departmental officials, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalark and members of the Thai high-ranking commercial delegation.
 


(5) NHC Chairman attends cash donation ceremony for YGH

YANGON 5 Aug-With the patronage of late mother Daw Kyi Hla, well-wishers U Chit Htwe (Pyapon) and family made a donation for poor patients of Yangon General Hospital at a Ceremony held at the meeting hall of Ministry of Health at 2.45 pm today, attended by Chairman of National, Health Committee Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Present also were ministers, the Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and well-wishers family.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an address. He said the Ministry of Health is trying to promote treatment of hospitals and clinics and to provide free treatment for poor patients under the instructions of the Chairman of NHC.

The government has allocated K4,000 million for Ministry of Health in 19992000, the fourth largest, he said and well-wishers had donated K 204 million to set up the trust funds, medical equipment worth K 135.7 million and buildings worth K,52.1 million and K 59.8 million and US $ 600000 for 244 hospitals up to- the end of May in 2000, he added.

Altogether K 59.7 million had been spent for 52,639 poor patients in the hospitals from January to May in 2000, he said. In the hospitals, the poor patients are being treated free and the cost-sharing health care system is employed for those who can afford, he added. He spoke of the need to thank well-wishers U Chit Htwe and family for their donation of K 8.6 million, and the trust funds will be used for poor patients of YGH, renovation of buildings and providing the medical equipment for the hospital Then, Chairman of NHC Secretary- l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted K 7 million for medical trust funds donate by U Chit Htwe (Pyapon) and family. U Chit Htwe (Pyapon) and family presented K 950,000 for renovation of Echo Room at Cardiac Unit of YGH and medical equipment to Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein. Well-wishers U Chit Htwe (Pyapon) and family presented K 300,000 for poor patients at Neurosurgical Unit to Medical Superintendent Dr Taik Wan and K 350,000 for Diathemy of Yangon Eastern Hospital to Acting Medical Superintendent Dr Vitana Tarajan. On behalf of the well-washer s family, U Myat Soe spoke on the occasion. Then, Medical Superintendent Dr Taik Wan of YGH spoke words of thanks.


(6) MIDB holds Fifth Annual General Meeting

YANGON, 5 Aug-The Fifth Annual General Meeting of Myanma Industrial Development Bank was held at the building of the bank on Pansodan Street here at 1 pm today, addressed by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of MIDB Minister for Indus try-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Indus try-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig- Gen Than Tun, OSD at Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Col Than Tint, members of the Board of Directors, advisers, officials and shareholders.

General Manager of MIDB U Kyaw acted as master of ceremonies. Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said that the bank has considerable experience as it has spanned over four years; it has disbursed loss for industrialists to extend their businesses; loans have been disbursed only for industries as the objective of the bank is to contribute towards development of Myanma industrial sector by providing financial service.

Then, Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Bank Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin said that MIDB is disbursing loans mainly to production businesses and industries as the purpose of the bank is to develop the industrial sector of the State.

Priority is to be given to industrialists for the development of the industrial sector, and loans have been disbursed to commercial businesses and other services by using the money of shareholders and the money deposited by customers. With effect from 1-4-2000, interest rates for loans extended to industrialists and other entrepreneurs are cut down to 13% and for loans disbursed to entrepreneurs outside the industrial zone, down to 15%. In the 1999-2000 fiscal year, the bank has provided banking services in accord with the objectives of the State and its aims, and loans-have been disbursed to industrialists at fair interest rates. Dividends have been given to shareholders. (Then, Managing Director U Aung Chit o f MIDB presented annual report for 19992000 of the Board of Directors and member of the Board of Auditors Daw Nay Min Thant reported on financial report, and report of BOD for 1999-2000 and approval sought. Member of Board of Directors Dr Tun Hsaing and Chairman of MIDB Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin replied to suggestions of shareholders. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, members of Board of Directors and Board of Auditors were approved and selected. Then, Chairman Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin presented gifts to advisers of the bank. The meeting came to a close with-the concluding remark by Chairman Minister Mai-Gen Saw Lwin.


(7) Thai Deputy Prime Minister holds press conference

YANGON, 5 Aug-Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand and party, who attended the Joint Trade Commission (JTC) between Myanmar and Thailand organized by Ministry of Commerce on 4 August, held  a Press Conference on the Joint Trade Commission (JTC) between Myanmar and Thailand at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Also present at the Press Conference were Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise, Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of Myanma Radio and Television, Director (News) U Hla Tun of NPE, Chief Editor U Kyi Nyunt of the Myanma Alin daily, Chief Editor U Zaw Min Thein of Myanma News Agency (Internal), Adviser to the Minister :for Information U Kyaw Min. Adviser U Maung Maung Nyo of NPE,, Patron of -Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win, President U Sao Kai Hpa and correspondents, Chief Editor U Soe Myint of City News, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak, members of the high-ranking trade delegation of Thailand, deputy chief editors and editors of dailies and officials of the Ministry of Commerce.

The Signing Ceremony of the Records of Discussions between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for the Second Session of the Joint Trade Commission held under the sponsorship of Ministry of Commerce took place at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this afternoon.

It was attended by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, heads of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Commerce and other ministries, members of the Thai high-ranking commercial delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalark and officials of Thai Embassy. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand signed the Records of Discussions and exchanged the documents. After the ceremony, the two ministers and members of the delegations posed for documentary photograph.


(8) Minister for Industry-1 inspects Thayet Cement Plant

YANGON, 5 Aug-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met officers of Thayet Cement Plant at the plant, Magway Division, this morning. The minister said that the government is making efforts for the economic progress of the State, and the State is making progress gradually; so, all service personnel are enjoying the fruits of the progress. The Ministry of Industry-l has laid down the plans designed to speed up production. The minister urged all to follow the policies of the ministry and to actively participate in efforts for boosting production. Then, the minister inspected Kilm No 2 which was repaired by Japanese technicians of Mitsubishi Corporation. Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe and the factory manager reported on salient points about the factory.

Afterwards, the minister inspected Kilm No 1 which was repaired by YMEC Company of China The minister gave instructions on running the factory. Next, the minister inspected 200 ton Kilm No 3 built by Myanmar engineers, and gave instructions on the work. The minister met with officials in the briefing hall of the factory. Managing Director U Than Shwe, General Manager U Aye Maung and Factory Manager U Tin Aung reported on facts about Kilm No 3 With the aim of fulfilling the cement requirements in the nation, under the guidance of leaders of State, 200-ton Kilm No 3 has been built by Myanmar engineers without using foreign assistance. It is located in the compound of Thayet Cement Plant on the west bank of the Ayeyawady River in Magway Division.


(9) Thai delegation leaves for home

YANGON, 5 Aug-Thai high-ranking commercial delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand left here for Thailand this evening after at tending the Second Session of the Joint Trade Commission between the Union of Myanmar and the Kingdom of Thailand.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalark and officials of Ministry of Commerce.


(10) 27 Letpadan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 5 Aug-Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division. Twenty-seven members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Letpadan-Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 30 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
