(1) Secretary-1 hoists Htidaw atop Maha Shwemyintmo Sulamani Datpaungsu Pagoda in Pyay

YANGON, 2 Aug- Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt left here by air for Pyay in Bago Division this morning. The Secretary-1 was ac complained by ministers, Yangon Mayor, Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived at Yadana Manaung Tawyataik and paid obeisance to Presiding Sayadaw Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Vijjabala of Yadana Manaung Tawyataik.

The Htidaw hoisting ceremony of Maha Shwemyintmo Culamani Datpaungsu Pagoda, built by Presiding Sayadaw Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Vijjabala of Yadana Manaung Tawyatik, was held at the pagoda on Thiri Zeya Yan Pyay-Manpyay Hill at Yadana Manaung Tawya Taikthit this morning, attended by Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The ceremony was held at Dhammayon of Yadana Manaung Tawyataik.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Five Precepts from Bhaddanta Vijjabala Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented offertories to the members of the Sangha Bhaddanta Vijjabala delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and three tiers of Shwehtidaw to Bhaddanta Vijjabala for the pagoda.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party conveyed the Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and tiers of Shwehtidaw, well-wishers families htidaws of circling zedis from Dhammayon to Datpaungsu Pagoda. Later, Secretary-l Lt Gen Khin Nyunt and party conveyed the Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and three tiers of Shwehtidaw from Mingala Pandal to decorated float.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, and party sprinkled scented water on the tiers of the Htidaw. At the auspicious time, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party conveyed the Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and tiers of Shwehtidaw, religious objects to the top of the pagoda.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hoisted Seinphudaw atop Maha Shwemyintmo Sulamani Datpaungsu Pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and tiers of Shwehtidaw. Then, well-wishers families hoisted htidaws atop circling zedis of Datpaungsu Pagoda. After the ceremony, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party performed the rituals of golden and silver shower to make the success of the ceremony. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then left there for Padaung, Bago Division.


(2) Padaung Township Basic Education High School gets multimedia teaching centre Public contribution to education promotion programmes reaches K 4b

YANGON, 2 Aug - A multimedia teaching centre was opened at the Basic Education High School in Padaung Township this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Headmaster U Hla Myint and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Win Swe formally opened the centre.

The Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard. Accompanied by officials, the Secretary-l inspected the different rooms of the centre and the qualifications of the students.

Headmaster U Hla Myint explained efforts being made to open the centre, saying all the necessary equipment could be installed at the centre due to the sponsorship of the Minister for Home Affairs, close supervision of the local authorities and the assistance rendered by the people with full generosity. The Secretary-l presented teaching aids to U Hla Myint.

At Pawdawmu Shinyu Pagoda, the Secretary-l and party paid homage to the stupa. They then inspected renovation of the Gandakuditaik. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing reported to the Secretary-l on progress in all-round renovation of the pagoda. After signing in the visitors_ book, the Secretary- 1 presented donations to the pagoda funds.

On arrival at Shwebontha Muni Pagoda, they were welcomed by members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees, members of USDA and social organizations teachers and students. After paying obeisance to the ancient Buddha images al the pagoda, the Secretary-l made donations. The Secretary-l and party arrived back here in the evening.

(3) Preparations under way to welcome Lawka Chantha Abhaya Laba Muni Image

YANGON,2 Aug-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected preparations being made to convey and welcome the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Laba Muni Image at Mindhamma Hillock in Insein this evening. Minister U Pan Aung reported to the Secretary-l on conveying of the image from the jetty to the hillock, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe on conveying of the image along the river, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung on documenting the event and Deputy Minister U Tint Swe on preparations to hold the ceremony .Chairmen and members of the image conveyance committee (Yangon), ceremonial subcommittee, decoration subcommittee, conveyance. subcommittee, reception and accommodation subcommittee, transport subcommittee, information subcommittee, health subcommittee, fund raising subcommittee and greening subcommittee presented reports sector-wise.

Officials also took part in the discussions. After looking into the requirements, the Secretary-1 inspected greening work in the environs of the hillock. The Secretary-1 than inspected the jetty where the barge carrying the image will anchor and preparations being made to welcome the image.


(4) Minister for Industry-2 meets PRC delegation

YANGON, 2 Aug - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met a delegation led by Chairman of Export & Import Bank of China Mr Yang Zilin and party together with Economic and Commercial Counsellor Mr Jin Honggen of Embassy of the People_ s Republic of China at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2 pm today. They cordially discussed mutual interest in economic and industrial co operation between the two countries. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin and Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials.

Minister receives foreign guests

YANGON, 2 August-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Ambassador of the Philippines to Myanmar Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office at 10 am today. Similarly, the minister also received General Manager of Mitsui & Co Ltd in Yangon Mr Toru Tsujii and Assistant General Manager Mr Kazuo Kimura at 11 am, and General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation in Yangon Mr Toshio Takayama and Senior Manager Mr Nobuhiro Nagano at 1 pm.  They discussed matters related to communications. Also present at the calls were General Manager of Myanma Posts and telecommunications U Tha Oo and officials.

YANGON, 2 Aug-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Chairman of Export and Import Bank of China Mr Yang Zilin and delegation of the Peoples’ Republic of China at his office this afternoon. Present on the occasion were heads of department under the Ministry of Industry- 1.

YANGON, 2 Aug-Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe received Ambassador of Australia Mr Trevor Wilson at his office at 1 pm today. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and heads of departments.

(5) People pay obeisance to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image in Hinthada

YANGON, 2 Aug-A ceremony to pay obeisance to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image and to donate cash towards the funds of the image was held this morning at Mingala Mandat in Hinthada Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image was kept for the night.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann presented vegetarian food to members of the Sangha.

Present were members of the Sangha led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Ledi Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Khamavudha, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, leader of conveying central committee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, senior military officers, Chairman of Hinthada District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Htain and members of District and Township Peace and Development Council, officials and members of religious and wut associations.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials took the Nine Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Khamayudha. Members of the Sangha recited metta sutta and parittas.

The commander and the deputy minister and officials presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. Chairman Lt-Col Win Htain presented K 1,704,000 donated by well-wishers in Hinthada Township to Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann. The commander presented K 5,004,000 donated by well-wishers of Ayeyawady Division to the deputy minister. The Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Devotees from various parts of Hinthada Township paid obeisance to the image.

Yesterday evening, well-wishers presented cash to the commander and Tactical Operations Commanders Col Htain Lin and Col Soe Win.


(6) Myanmar Vietnam sign MoU on border area development

YANGON, 2 Aug-At the invitation of National Races and Highland Region Affairs Committee of Socialist Republic of Vietnams Deputy, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun leading a delegation visited SRV from 25 to 30 July, During the goodwill visit, Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Than Tun met with Chairman of National Races and Highland_ Affairs Committee of SRV Minister Mr Hoang Duc Nghi. Moreover, Brig-Gen Than Tun met with Deputy Minister Mr Be Truong Thanh and discussed cooperation in development of national races and border areas between the two countries, On 28 July in Hanoi the deputy minister his counterpart signed the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in development of national races and border areas between the two countries.


(7) Seminar on Bridge Designing and Construction Technology continues

YANGON, 2 Aug-A seminar on Bridge Designing and Construction Technology, jointly organized by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction and Japan international Cooperation Agency (JICA), Infrastructure Development Institute Japan (IDI) and Japan Association Steel Bridge Construction (JASBC) continued at the Head Office of Public Works on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning. Present on the occasion were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen ;Myint Thein, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, departmental heads, officials of Public Works, Japanese experts and superintending engineers and officials of bridge construction projects.

Dr Takayuki Nishido explained the installation of the steel-framed bridge. Engineer Mr Soichiro Imai explained different kinds of bridges, followed by a general round of discussions. At 1 pm, Japanese experts and Myanmar engineers present at the seminar led by Managing Director of PW U Nay Soe Naing went to the construction site of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha)

At the briefing hall, Managing Director U Nay Soe Naing and Superintending Engineer (Planning) U Myint Lwin explained construction of the bridge. Then, the engineers inspected the bridge. Managing Director U Nay Soe Naing and party proceeded to the construction project of Aungzeya Bridge (Insein). At the briefing hall, Superintending Engineer (Planning) U Khin Maung Aye explained construction of the bridge and then the engineers spoke words of thanks.

(8) Minister meets entrepreneurs

YANGON, 2 Aug-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met entrepreneurs at the ministry this morning. Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, heads of department, officials, the president of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and executives, guests, and entrepreneurs. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the authorities concerned will help the entrepreneurs engaging in businesses in accordance with the Myanmar Investment Law find solutions to their problems and achieve progress of their businesses. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials reported on sector wise matters and the entrepreneurs their difficulties. The minister and those present took part in the discussions on their reports.


(9) 21 Myittha Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 2 Aug-Twenty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division. Twenty-one members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-Commission and the party concerned on 19 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
