(1)Over 150,000-local people pay homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image in Hinthada

YANGON, 1 Aug-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge), which spent a night in Myanmar on 31 July, arrived at Mingala Mandat of Hinthada this morning.

Before departure for Hinthada, Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, leader of the centra1 committee for conveyance of the Image Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Secretary Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Tactical Operations Commander of Southern Command Col Htein Lin, Tactical Operations Commander of Southwest Command Col Soe Win and members of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council offered vegetarian "soon" to Sayadaws who recited Maha Pathana Desana on board Pyigyi-dagun-3 at 5 am today. Then, Commander Maj Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials attended the donation ceremony for the Image at the Mingala Mandat.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and senior military officers sprinkled scented water. on the Image. At 7.29 am, when the Image on board the barge left Myanaung for Hinthada, the commander, senior military off1cers, division, district and township authorities and local people paid homage to the Image. The Image on board the barge was conveyed by the fleet led by leader of the central committee for conveyance of the Image Deputy Minister for information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Secretary Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and Tactical Operations Commander of Southern Command Col Htein Lin on board Pyigyidagun-3.

Nuns led by Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Nun Daw Santayati and Daw Dhammikafiani of themeikdawdaya Myanaung Nunnery and the " wut"  association led by Director Daw Khin Nwe Han Kwi of DPPS on board Thallawady-4 recited 11 "paritas" and Dhammacakka Suttas. Tactical Operations Commander of South- Command Col Soe Win and party accompanied to welcome the Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) by boat. Over 150,000 local people paid homage to the Image on board the barge at Mingala Mandat of Hinthada Township this afternoon.


(2) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image stops over at Myanaung Port

YANGON 1 Aug-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) left Pyay Township for Myanaung Township yesterday morning. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Gen Aung Min and officials sprinkled scented water on the Image.

At 7.02 am, when the Image on board the barge left the Mingala Mandat in Pyay for Myanaung, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, officials and local People paid reverence the Image was conveyed by the fleet led by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director General U Sann Lwin and Tactical Operations Commander Col Htein Lin of Southern Command on board Pyigyidagun-3. board Thallawady-4 recited 11 "paritas" and Dhammacikka Suttas. Tactical Operations Commander of Sout-West Command Col Soe Win and party accompanied to welcome the Yadana Shwephaungtdaw (barge) by boat. At 12.30 pm, the Image on board the barge arrived to spend the night at the jetty of Mingala Mandat in Myanaung Township yesterday afternoon. Over 110,000 local people including members of the Sagha and departmental personnel welcomed the image to pay to reverence to it on a grand scale at the jetty.


(3) Gifts presented to employees of All Bus-Lines Control Committee

YANGON, 1 Aug-All Bus-Lines Control Committee (Yangon Division) presented gifts and bonus to its employees for their outstanding performance this morning at the ABLCC Head Office.

Present on the occasion were Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, members of Yangon and Development Councils, Chairman at ABLCC U Phone Kyaw and members, officials of branch committees and ABLCC Head Office, prize winners, employees of ABLCC and guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said under the close supervision of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, the ABLCC is striving to ensure smooth and secure transport for the commuters in the city in accord with the objectives laid down by the State; its annual earnings are exceeding the set target. Car owners, drivers and conductors are enjoying the proceeds equality. The Commander presented a total of over k 27.5 million as award for outstanding performance and bonus to employees of the different division of ABLCC. Deputy Commander of Yangon Commander Brig- Gen Hsan Hsint and officials also presented gifts to drivers and conductors.

(4) Seminar on Bridge Designing and Construction Technology held

YANGON, 1 Aug-A seminar on Bridge Designing and Construction Technology, jointly organized by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Infrastructure Development Institute Japan (IDI) and Japan Association Steel Bridge Construction (JASBC) was held at the Head Office of Public Works on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning. Present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori, departmental heads, officials of Public Works, Japanese experts, superintending engineers and officials of bridge construction projects and bridge special groups and guests. Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori gave speech. The senior counselor of Japan read the address of Chairman of Mr Hiroaki Tamamistu of Development Institute. At the seminar, Superintending Engineer (Project) U Han Zaw of Ayeyawady River (Bridge) explained construction of bridges in Myanmar. Dr Minora Sujiuara of the Japanese engineer counsellors group reviewed the bridge engineer training course opened in Myanmar. The Chief Engineer of IDI explained the latest techniques related to construction of concrete bridges in Japan. The seminar will last up to 4 August. up


(5) Minister for Religious Affairs meets Ambassador of Thailand

YANGON, 1 Aug-Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin met Ambassador of Thailand to the Union of Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda this morning. Also present at the call were Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe and Head of Office U Maung Maung Myint.

Mayor meets Japanese Ambassador

YANGON, 1 Aug-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Ambassador of Japan to the Union of Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori at his office at City Hall at 10 am today. Also present at the call were Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, members of the committee and heads of departments.

Ambassador of Australia calls on UMFCCI President

YANGON, 1 Aug-Ambassador of Australia Mr Trevor Wilson and party called on President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and General Secretary U Zaw Min Win at UMFCCI building on Merchant Street this afternoon. First, President U Win Myint explained history of the UMFCCI and tasks being carried out. Then, they cordially discussed investment and trade opportunities, promotion of trade, bilateral cooperation between entrepreneurs of the two countries.

Minister meets RP Ambassador, foreign visitor

YANGON, 1 Aug-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office at 11 am today. Similarly, the minister met President Miss Luxana Jariyawatsakul of Regina International Co Ltd, Bangkok, Thailand at his office at 1 pm today. They cordially discussed matters related to visits of international travellers to the Four-Country Trade Fair to be held under the cooperation of traders from Myanmar and People’s Republic of China from 28 September to 8 October. Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General, Managing Director and officials of the ministry.

(6) Certificates of honour presented to baby friendly hospitals and townships

YANGON, 1 Aug-A ceremony to present certificates of honour to hospitals and townships in recognition of their participation in breast feeding systematically under the arrangement of the Ministry of Health and UNICEF was held at the Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street this morning.

Present were Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Ministers for Health Dr Mya Oo and Dr Kyaw Myint, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw; Tin, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, the directors-general and deputy directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, medical superintendents, resident representatives of WHO and UNICEF and officials.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said various projects to uplift health standard of the entire nation are being implemented under the guidance of the National Health Committee and the breast feeding project is one of them. He said the project has been implemented since January 1993 and breast feeding had been undertaken in 660 hospitals. Among them, 268 hospitals had been recognized as those which carried out breast feeding systematically. Out of 291 townships, 49 were recognized as those which carried out breast feeding systematically, he added. Resident representative of UNICEF Mr John Betrand Mendis made a speech. The minister, the deputy minister and officials present gifts to health staff and midwives from hospitals and township which carried out breast feeding systematically. The minister and guest observed  "Breast Feeding: It’s Your Right " booth.


(7) Primary health care international course opens

YANGON, 1 Aug- The primary health care international course, jointly sponsored by Health Department and WHO, was opened at the meeting hall of Health Department this afternoon. Deputy Director-General Dr Soe Aung and Dr Antony Fric (OIC) of WHO gave speeches.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Director-General of Health Department Dr Hla Pe and officials, those of WHO, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and trainees.

Altogether 12 trainees from Myanmar, Indonesia, Bhutan and Nepal are attending the six-week course and they will also study primary health acre tasks in Yangon Mandalay and Ayeyawady Divisions.

(8) Myanmar delegation leaves for Japan

YANGON, 1 Aug-Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun saw off Managing Director of Myanma Investment and Commercial Bank U Zaw Win and Managing Director of Myanma Foreign Trade Bank U Than Yee at the airport this morning. The delegation left for Tokyo to attend the Seminar on International Banking and Trade Services sponsored by Tokai Bank, Japan to be held in Tokyo from 1 to 9 August.


(9) Minister inspects No 2 Plastic Factory, Winthuza Sale Centre

YANGON- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at No 2 Plastic Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries on Pawdawmu Pagoda Street in Mayangon Township this morning.

The minister inspected production process of the factory and gave necessary instruction. On arrival at Winthuza Sale Centre on U Wizara Road in Sangyoung Township, the minister inspected goods of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries, products of Myanma Ceramic Industries and Myanma Textile Industries and medicines of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries and Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries at the Sale Centre.

The minister gave instructions on construction of car park and facilities of the sale centre. Winthuza Sale Centres were opened not only in Yangon but also States and Divisions The centres sell products of industries under the Ministry of Industry-l at reasonable price.


(10) Myanmar youth beats Hong Kong youth 5-0

YANGON, 1 Aug-The Myanmar-Hong Kong soccer friendly was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this evening. Among the spectators were Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and officials. In the match, the selected under-16 Myanmar youth beat Hong Kong youth team 5-0.The second match of the Myanmar- Hong Kong soccer friendly will be held on 3 August evening.

(11) Drug trafficker gets 20 years' imprisonment

YANGON, 1 Aug-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local MPF, acting on information, searched Aye Kywe, 40, son of U Hla Din, of Nyaungon Village, Hlegu Township, on the highway near Tahsudaung Pagoda, Ngahsudaung Village, Hlegu Township, on 20 February 2000, and arrested him together with eight packets of smoked opium weighing 245.96 grams. He was tried under Section 15/19 (A) or Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances law by Ngahsudaung Police Station. He was sentenced to 24 years_ imprisonment on 1 June 2000 under Section 1 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances law by Yangon North District Court.


(12) Union of Myanmar Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission  Announcement No 1513

2nd Waxing of Wagaung, 1362 ME (1 August 2000)

Subject: Permission given to U Khin Maung Nyo to resign as Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected from Pyawbwe Township Constituency 1 in Mandalay Division

1. U Khin Maung Nyo of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Pyawbwe Township Constituency I in Mandalay Division, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign as he no longer wished to participate in party politics.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Khin Maung Nyo has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative elect of Pyawbwe Constituency 1 effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(13) 29 Yamethin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 1 Aug - members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-nine members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters, of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 16 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
