(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Switzerland

YANGON, 1 Aug-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Adolf Ogi, President of
the Swiss Confederation, on the occasion of the founding of the Swiss Confederation which falls on 1st August 2000.


(2) Secretary-l inspects preparations for conveyance of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labh Muni Image

YANGON, 31 July- Secretary-1 of the S1ate Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Min Dhamma Hillock in Insein Township this afternoon.

The Secretary-l was welcomed by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, deputy ministers, heads of department and officials. Departmental heads and official reported on preparations for conveyance of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions. The Secretary-l inspected preparation work on conveyance of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image from the foot of Min Dhanma Hillock to the throne. He was conducted round by Minister U Pan Aung and officials. went to Gyogon jetty and inspected construction of Shwephaungdaw jetty where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image will moor. The Secretary-l and party inspected construction of "mandates" and preparations of the road along which
the Image will be conveyed.


(3) Donations for funds of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image in Pyay

YANGON, 31 July-A ceremony to donate cash towards the funds of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image, which spent the night in Pyay, was held at Mingala Mandat of Pyay Port this morning.
Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Maj Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Pyay Zawtikayon Pali Tekkatho Kyaungtaik Presiding Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kundalajoti administered the Nine Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited "paritass".

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Commander of No 66 LID Brig -Gen Aung Min, Chairman of Bago (Western Branch) Peace and
Development senior military officers, officials, "Wut" associations and well-wishers attended the ceremony Development Council Col Phone Swe and officials donated pro visions to Joint-Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kundalajoti and Sayadaws. Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye presented K 6,150,000 donated by local people of Bago Division to Minister U Aung Khin. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kundalajoti delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Altogether 50 well-wishers donated K 920,000. In the evening and at night, members of the Sangha and devotees came to the barge to pay obeisance to the Image. The mobile library and the wall newspapers and photo exhibition were also crowed with the people.

(4) Minister meets Ambassador of the Philippines

YANGON, 31 July- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Ambassador of the Philippines to the Union of Myanmar Mrs Phoebe.A Gomez at his office at 4.30 pm today. Also present at the call were
Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, director-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

The Ambassador of the Philippines also called on Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi met Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office this morning. They discussed energy matters. Present were Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung and Director-General of Energy Planning Department U Soe Myint.

Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun received the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office this morning. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Maung Aung, Director-General Col Maung Htay of Immigration and National Registration Department, Director-General Col Tin Yi of Population Department and officials.


(5) Presentation on Globalization and its Security Impact held

YANGON, 31 July- The Presentation on Globalization and its Security Impact cosponsored by Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies and Malaysian Institute of Strategic and International Studies and Malaysian Strategic Research Centre was held at Wunzin Minyaza Conference Room of the Ministry Foreign Affairs at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, National Defence College, Office of the Strategic Studies, universities and ministries concerned. At the presentation, Chairman of Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung
gave an introductory speech. Executive Director Mr Abdul Razak Baginda of Malaysian Strategic Research Centre discussed Globalization and its Security Impact and replied to the queries. Then, the concluding remarks made by Director-General U Aye Lwin of Ministry of Foreign Affairs brought the presentation to a close.


(6) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 31 July-National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at the meeting hall of the Commission this afternoon. Present were Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission
Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and members of the Commission. National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee
reported on matters relating to the National Convention. Members of the Commission took part in the discussions. Chairman of the Commission also took part in the discussions and the meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the Chairman.

(7) Student delegation recount experience of get- togethers

YANGON, 31 July-A ceremony to honour the students who attended the get-togethers of students in Malaysia and Japan, was held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this afternoon.

Present were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, Japanese and Malaysian ambassadors, directors-general, chairmen and officials of departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, township education officers and school heads. Minister for Education U Than Aung made a speech.

Senior Assistant Teacher Daw Myint Myint handed over a certificate of honour presented by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, to the  minister. Headmistress of No 1 Basic Education High School Daw San Myint of Hpa-an, Kayin State, eight middle school students of states and divisions and two university students attended the 12th get-together of students of Asian and Pacific Region from 15 to 24 July in Fukuoka, Japan.

Six students led by Senior Assistant Teacher of No 2 BEHS Daw Myint Myint of Sangyoung Township and Junior Assistant Teacher of No 7 Basic Education Middle School of Mandalay U Htay attended the
get- together of the youth of ASEAN from 17 to 30 July a Kuala Lumpur Malaysia


(8) Myanmar goodwill delegation arrives back from Vietnam

YANGON, 31 July- Myanmar goodwill delegation led by Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun arrived back here yesterday after visiting Vietnam at the invitation of National Races and Hill Region Committee of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for
Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Ambassador of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, officials and families.

Member of the delegation Deputy Director-General of Education and Training Department U Tin Win also arrived back on the same flight.


(9) On -job Training Course for Township Heads of IRD concludes

YANGON, 31 July-The On -job Training Course No 20 for Township Heads of Internal Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue concluded at the training hall of IRD on Pansodan Street this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Director-General
U Chit Swe of IRD, directors general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry and trainees. Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein gave a speech. Then,
Director-General U Chit Swe presented certificates to trainees. Altogether 52 trainee officers attended the three-week course.

(10) Myanma Posts and Telecommunications open courses

YANGON, 31 July-The personal computer for office applications advanced course, the officers refresher course and the maritime radio communication course were opened at the Telecommunication and Postal Service Training Centre under Myanma Posts and Telecommunications of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this morning with an address by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin.

Also present were the managing director of MPT, the director-general of Posts and Telecommunications Department, personnel of MPT, the principal of TPSTC, course instructors and trainees.

The minister said that Myanma Posts and Telecommunications is extending postal, telegraph and telephone services to improve the communication system all over Myanmar, in this regard, modern
communication technology is being used; the progress of communication services will contribute to development of the nation; Myanma Posts and Telecommunications is also opening courses to enhance the quality of employees. Just as Myanma Posts and Telecommunications is extending in and communication services, so it is also providing maritime communication services; to ensure the safety of ships, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is being used at coastal communication stations. In conclusion, the minister urged the trainees to be assiduous at the courses and to serve the interests of the people all the more when they resume their duties again.


(11) 8 ChaungU Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 11 July-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of ChaungU Township, Sagaing Division. Eight members of ChaungU Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 2 May, 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
