(1) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe accepts  credentials of Ambassador of Israel

YANGON, 21 July-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar  Senior General Than Shwe accepted the credentials of newly-accredited Ambassador of the State of Israel Mr Baruch Ram at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today. Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for  Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.



(2) Cybermec Information Technology Centre opens

YANGON, 21 July - Myanma Economics Corporation opened Cybermec Information Technology Centre  at NO 550/552 on Merchant Street, Kyauktada Township, this morning. The cent-re is opened with the aims of enabling the majority of the people in Myanmar to use computers at reasonable prices, keeping  track of development of computer technology and keeping pace with technical development, inspiring the youth of Myanmar to learn computer technology and contributing to the educational development  of the youths of new generation, turning out the new generation well-versed in computer technology and ensuring the development of human re sources which contributes to the emergence of a new  industrialed  nation.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin  Oo attended the ceremony.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, the Attorney General, the Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board, deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of diplomatic missions, heads of department, officials of  Myanma Economics Corporation, entrepreneurs at home and abroad and guests. Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Hla formally opened the centre.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of, the centre. The Secretary-1, the  Secretary-2, Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Hla the ministers and party inspected Satellite Image and  processing work, the drawing of designs for river crossing bridges by computer, the computerization of the education sector, the use of Computer Aided Design Auto CAD System, engineering analysis,  finding of the axis for the roads with the use of aerial photos and satellite photos, the assembling of
computers and production and testing rooms. In the briefing hall of the centre, Managing Director Comdr. Aung Myint (Navy) explained the efforts of Myanma Economics Corporation for production of computers.

At present, three kinds of Cybermec Computers, namely, Cybermec Explore, Cybermec Performa and  Cybermec Achiever and being produced; computer application courses will be conducted for individual
-buyers, the associations and schools.

Project Manager of Eastern Metro Company Mr Basir Aton of Malaysia also made a speech. Managing  Director of Innwa Bank Ltd of Myanma Economics Corporation Col Min Thwin explained the sale of computers with the loans to be extended by Innwa Bank. Cybermec Information Technology Centre will sell computers at discount for seven days; after the opening ceremony, altogether 215 computers were sold out; the centre will be kept open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm daily.

(3) Four schools rebuilt under Grass-Roots Grant Assistance Scheme of Japan opened

YANGON, 21 July-A ceremony was held at 3 pm today to mark the opening of four basic education  primary schools donated by the Embassy of Japan for the first batch under the Grass-Roots Grant  Assistance Scheme.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony which was held at No 14 Basic Education Primary School in
Thakayta, Yangon Division. Under GRGAS, altogether US $ 173,380 was presented to rebuild Zaygyi Basic Education Primary School in Hlegu Township, No 14 BEPS in Thakayta Township,  Myaukchawgon BEPS in Hmawby Township and No 29 BEPS in Bago Township.

Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori explained the purpose of the donation. Minister for  Education U Than Aung extended thanks, saying the Grass-Roots Grant Assistance Scheme began in  the 1998-99 fiscal year. Under GRGAS in that fiscal year, buildings for ten basic education primary schools had been constructed in Myanmar. In the 1999 -200 fiscal year, according to the GRGAS, it was  agreed to rebuild ten basic education primary schools in Myanmar; a further agreement was signed
recently to rebuild another seven primary schools in the nation.

Of the ten schools to be built in the 1999-2000 fiscal year under GRGAS, four have already been  completed. The ceremony was held to hand over the four already built schools as well as furniture to the Ministry of Education.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori  formally opened the No 14 BEPS. Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori hander over the related documents
of the schools to Deputy Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department U Tin Win. U Tin Win presented a certificate of honour to Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori.

Minister U Than Aung and Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori exchanged gifts to mark the success of  the ceremony.



(4) Cultivation of oil palm in Taninthayi Division coordinated

YANGON, 21 July- A coordinating meeting on cultivation of oil palm in Taninthayi Division was held at  the meeting hall of the Prime Minister s Office at 4.30 Dm today.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said arrangements are being made to cultivate 500,000 acres of oil palm in  Taninthayi Division to make the region the nation s oil pot and to fulfil the edible oil requirements of  the nation.

In addition to oil palm and rubber, cultivation of paddy is also under way in Taninthayi Division to  ensure regional rice sufficiency, and fish and prawn trawling and breeding are being undertaken in the  division, he said.

He said that he met with the officials to fulfil the requirements in security, fuel oil and development of  transport sector to boost cultivation of oil palm in Taninthayi Division.

Then, Secretary of the leading committee Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung reported to the meeting on projected oil palm acres of national entrepreneurs and cultivated acreage, acres to be cultivated in 2001
and availability of seeds and establishment of nursery plantations.

The entrepreneurs reported to the meeting on their difficulties and requirements in cultivation of oil  palm in Taninthayi Division. The meeting ended with additional remarks given by Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

(5)Plans under way to organize farm machinery exhibitions in states and divisions

YANGON, 21 July -A coordination meeting on exhibition and sale of farm machinery was held at the  Prime Minister s Office this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said national entrepreneurs are engaged in cultivation of crops on  thousands of acres of farms; some national entrepreneurs are importing and distributing foreign-made  farm machinery; and some are distributing locally made farm machinery.

The farm machinery exhibition organized by entrepreneurs at Thaiktukan village, Thongwa Township,  Yangon Division, has been of great benefits to farmers.

Such kind of exhibitions should also be held in other states and divisions with the aim of enabling  farmers to know more about agricultural machinery. Entrepreneurs should make arrangements to  distribute farm machinery at fair prices. Minister Brig- Gen Lunn Maung also gave suggestions on successful holding of the exhibitions. Deputy Minster Lt- Col Khin Maung Kyaw and U Ohn Myint and  entrepreneurs then took part in the discussions. The Secretary -2 look into the requirements.



(6) Olympic Company introduce compound fertilizer

YANGON, 21 July-A ceremony to introduce the compound fertilizer produced by Kemira Agro Group  and imported and distributed by Olympic Company Ltd was held at the Traders Hotel this morning,
attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said it is found that the technical know-how and effective management of  the agriculture sector contributes largely to wards the development of agricultural production..

 Then, Chairman of Olympic Company U Aik Tun spoke of the purpose of introduction the compound  fertilizer to the agricultural entrepreneurs and farmers. Afterwards, Executive Vice President of Kemira Agro Group Dr Timo Tormala extended greetings.

Agriculturist Dr.Ioannis Papadopoulos explained the efficient use of the compound fertilizer for the cultivation of various crops.


(7) Minister receives Chinese visitors

YANGON, 21 July- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone received Director of Easter World Ltd in Hong Kong of the People s Republic of China Mr Lewis Yat Wah Leung and party at his office at 11 am today. They discussed matters relating to bilateral economic, trade and investment cooperation matters. Also present at the were Director-General of: Border Trade Department Col Nay Win, Managing
Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials.

(8) Minister receives Japanese Ambassador

YANGON, 21 July-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Japanese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori at his office this morning. They discussed matters pertaining to bilateral cooperation in economic and industries. Also present at the call were officials of the Ministry of Industry-2.


(9) Minister meets Australian Ambassador

YANGON, 21 July-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Australian Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Trevor Wilson at his office this morning. Present also at the call were Director-General
of Border Trade Department Col Nay Win, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials.


(10) Cash donated to MMCWA

YANGON, 21 July-A ceremony to donate cash to Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at Myanmar MMCWA(Central) office at the corner of Thanthuma Road and Parami Road this morning. It
was attended by Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe of MMCWA, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC members and officials of the Office of the Strategic Studies representing the well- wishers.

On behalf of Asian Ladies Friendship Society (Japan), General staff Officer (Grade-1) Lt- Col Tin Oo of the Office of the Strategic Studies donated U $$ 7,223 and on behalf of Myanmar Military Attache to
Pakistan (Army, Navy, Air Force) and Daw Khin Khin Aye and family General Staff Officer (Grade- 1) Lt-Col Than Aung of the Office of the Strategic Studies donated U$$ 200 to Vice- Chairperson Dr Daw
Khin Win Shwe who- presented certificates of honour to the donors.

(11) Meeting held to coordinate compilation of gender indicators

YANGON, 21 July-A coordination meeting on gender indicators sponsored by Myanmar National Committee for Women s Affairs was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief
and Resettlement this morning.

Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa made an opening speech. Also present were members of MNCWA deputy ministers, directors-general, directors, Vice-Chairperson of
MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yee, member of the working committee Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary of the working committee U Sit Myaing and members, officials and guests.

The minister said that as Myanmar National Committee for Women s Affairs is not an organization but a committee, it has contributed to the tasks for development of women, which are included in the all-round development tasks being undertaken by the ministries; significant success has been achieved in striving for the development of the women sector by systematically laying down plans nation-wide.

Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yee explained matters related to gender indicators. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the ministers.


(12) USDA General Secretary receives Malaysian youth delegation

YANGON, 21 July-General Secretary of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Than Aung received Visiting youth delegation led by Secretary Mr Haji Mustapha Taakub of Intentional Relations Bureau of AMNO Party of Malaysia at the meeting hall of USDA Headquarters at 6 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were members of Central Executive Committee of USDA U Than Shwe, Brig Gen Pyi Sone and Col Thaik Tun and officials. They discussed friendly relations between the youth
associations of the two countries. In the evening, USDA General Secretary U Than Aung hosted a dinner at the Traders Hotel in honour of the Malaysian youth delegation. Also present at the dinner were USDA CEC members, officials and guests.

(13) ITBMU publishes books

YANGON, 21 July- Abhidhamma in Daily Life and Paritta Pali and Protective Verses, A Collection of Eleven Protective Suttas (An English Translation) published by International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University have come out. The former was written by Venerable Ashin Janakabhivamsa and translated into English and edited by U Ko Lay and revised by Rector Sayadaw Bhaddanta Silanandabhivansa Agga Maha Pandita, Agga Maha Saddhama Jotikadhaja. The latter is written by
Rector Sayadaw Bhaddanta Silanandabhivansa. The books are available at the rate of K1,500 per copy for Abhidhamma in Daily Life and K 300 per copy for Paritta Pali and Protective Verses at the reception
hall and library of ITBMU, near Tooth Relic Pagoda, Dhamapala Hill, Mayangon Township.


(14) Kyauktawgyi marble image crowded with pilgrims, local people

YANGON, 21 July-Members of the Sangha and local people continued to pay obeisance to Marble Image in Sakyin Village, Madaya Township, today.  Well-wishers and members of religious associations offer "soon" and soft drinks to Sayadaws who recited Pathana Dr Sein Lin and staff of Thaphandaunt Station, Madaya Township, provided health service to workers, members of the Sangha and people. Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Atulagonyi Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Odasiribhivamsa and
Sayadaws recited parittas.

Well-wishers U Win Maung of Mogok and U Myat Kaung of Meiko Company served workers and local people with vegetarian meals. Head of Madaya Township Information and Public Relations Department U Myo Myint opened the mobile library. At night, Pyithu Myitta Shweyadana Anyeint presented entertainment the audience.


(15) 277 drug-related cases exposed in June

YANGON, 21 July-A total of 277 drug cases were exposed by the Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department in June. The authorities seized 121.5079 kilos of opium in 19 cases, 1.2133
kilos of heroin in 80 cases, 6.4521 kilos of opium oil in three cases, 13.2385 kilos of low opium in 11 cases, 96.7535 kilos of marijuana in 57 cases, 10,344,441 stimulant tablets in 43 cases, 33.634 kilos of
Ephedrine in two cases, 014 kilos of stimulant power and 395.186 kilos of phenyl acetic acid in one case, 5,528.25 liters of spirit in one case, 2.61 kilos of chemical powder in one case, 54 cases of failure to
register and other five cases. Action has been taken against 397 persons-326 men and 71 women involved in 277 cases during the period.


(16) Man gets 26 years' imprisonment for running brothel at Nine Angel Inn

YANGON, 21 July -A man who ran a brothel at Nine Angel Inn in Bahan Township was sentenced to 26 years' imprisonment yesterday by Yangon West District Court. The Court also sentenced 20-year prison
terms each to his five accomplices for their involvement in the. prostitution business. The incident was that the authorities acting on information found the man, U Tin Nwe, and the five accomplices, Thet Wai Lin Phyo, Kayah (a) Saw Ba Mu, Sithu (a) Bo Bo, Myo Nyunt and Kyaw Thu, together with 18 prostitutes and 38 men who came there to find sexual pleasure at Nine Angel Inn when they raided the guest house at 5 pm 0n 14 June2000. An illegally installed fax phone, 129 condoms, K 696,970, 162 FECs, and US $ 198 were also seized at the Nine Angel Inn which is located at 11/l, Shwetaunggya Ward 2, Bahan Township, Yangon. The authorities received information that U Tin Nwe was running a brothel
with the help of five assistants at the Inn under the guise of a hotel business.

U Tin Nwe who lived at 60/1, Yinmamyaing Street, Thuwunna, Thingangyun, hired the building from the owner and used it in running the prostitution business. The court sentenced him 26 years' imprisonment five years under section 5 (1) of 1949 suppression of prostitution act, five years Section 8 (a) of 1949 suppression of prostitution act, three years under section 24 (1) of 1947 foreign currency exchange rules prescription act, three years under section 6 (1) of Myanmar wireless act and 10 years
under section 373 of the Penal Code.

The other five Thet Wai Lin Phyo, son of U Sein Myint, Kayah (a) Saw Ba Mu, son of U Saw Shi Mu, Sithu (a) Bo Bo, son of U Kyaw Myint, Myo Nyunt, son of U Lwin, and Kyaw Thu, son of U Kyaw Myint faced 20-year prison terms each five years under section 5 (1) of 1949 suppression of prostitution act, five years under section 8 (a) of i949 suppression of prostitution act, and 10 years under section 373
of the Penal Code. The five were employees of the Inn.


(17) Voters of Seikphyu Township demand dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON 21 July-Eligible voters of Seikphyu Township, Magway Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and demanded that it be dissolved, at two rallies in the
township on 9 June. A total of 13,500 voters of 10 village-tracts rallied at Township Sports Grounds. On behalf of the voters, farmer U Win Myint of Ywathit Village expressed no support for pessimist National
League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Myint Maung of Myinkawa Village, on behalf of the voters of wards and village-tracts, presented petitions signed by eligible voters to member
of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kan Myint. A similar rally was held at Gwaybin Village Affiliate Basic Education Middle School and attended by 9,411 voters of 34 village-tracts. On behalf of the voters, farmer U Than Nyunt of Gwaybin Village expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Maung Waing
of Hteintan Village, on behalf of the voters of wards and village-tracts, presented petitions signed by eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Sein
Thaung. Out of 52,302 eligible voters in Seikphyu Township, 48,234 or 92.22 per cent expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it.


(18) 9 Taungdwingyi Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 21 July-Nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taungdwingyi Township, Magway Division.

Nine members of Taungdwingyi Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Taungdwingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-
commission and the party concerned on 19 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
