YANGON, 21 July-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of  the  Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium, on
the  occasion of the National Day which falls on 21 July 2000.


(2) Secretary-1 receives of officials of ICRC

YANGON, 20 July-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Delegate General for Asia & Latin America, International Committee of Red Cross, Mr JM Monod and
party at  the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 3 pm today.  Also present on the occasion were Minister for  Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U  Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.


(3) Minister for H&T meets foreign guest

YANGON, 20 July-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met New Country Manager Mr Adrian  Stalder of Indochina Services Travel Ltd at his office at 3 pm today. Also present at the call were
Deputy  Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint Kyu, director-general, managing director and officials.

Minister receives ICRC delegation

YANGON, 20 July-Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing received Delegate General for Asia & Latin America, International Committee of Red Cross, Mr JM Monod and party at his office at 8 am today.

U Khin Maung Lay appointed Ambassador to Sri Lanka

YANGON, 21 July-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has  appointed U Khin Maung Lay as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of
Myanmar to  the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

(4) Old newspapers presented for Office of Strategic Studies

YANGON, 20 July-Old newspapers published by the ministry of Information were donated to Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence at No 2 Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this afternoon.

Present were Deputy Chief of Office of Strategic studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence  Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, heads of department of Office of Strategic Studies, well-wishers U Aung Shwe Oo of NTV  news agency and wife Daw Ni Ni and daughter Ma Hsint Hsint Aung. The well-wishers presented The  Working People s Daily and The New Light of Myanmar newspapers published from October 1988 to May  2000. Maj-Gen Kyaw Win accepted the old newspapers.


(5) Malaysian delegation arrives

YANGON, 20 July-At the invitation of the Union Solidarity and Development Association of Myanmar, a  ten-member delegation led by Secretary Mr Haji Mustaph a Yaakub of International Relation Bureau,
AMNO  Party, Malaysia arrived here this evening.

They were welcomed at the airport by member of Central Executive Committee of USDA Col Thaik Tun and  officials. Col Thaik Tun hosted dinner in honour of the delegation at Central Trading Department of
Myanma  Timber Enterprise on Shwetaunggya Road in the evening


(6) Information and documentation subcommittee (Yangon) meets

YANGON, 20 July-The information and documentation subcommittee (Yangon) for conveying the marble  image held a work coordination meeting in the meeting hall of the Ministry of information today.

It was  attended by Chairman of the subcommittee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and  subcommittee members, officials and personnel of the ministry. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein gave  instructions. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by  the deputy minister.

(7) Deputy Minister inspects warehouses in Pakokku

YANGON, 20 July - Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, together with officials, met with the  managers of Pakokku Division Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, Magway Division Manager the  assistant manager, purchase and sales managers, officials of warehouses and crop purchasing centres at  the office of the assistant manager of Pakokku Division Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading on 15 July  evening. The deputy minister gave instructions on systematic storage of
crops and security of warehouses.  In meeting with the employees of MAPT, the deputy minister called on all to discharge their duties diligently.  On 16 July morning, the deputy minister, accompanied by
officials, inspected the sites chosen for  construction of crops warehouses in Pakokku and gave instructions. Afterwards, the deputy minister  inspected warehouses at Myoma, and gave instructions on systematic storage of crops. Next, he inspected  the vegetable patches and the chicken-run of the employees.


(8) Seminar on Q8 engine oil, lubricating oil

YANGON, 20 July-A seminar on the use of Q8 brand engine oil and lubricating oil produced by Kuwait Petroleum (Thailand) Limited jointly sponsored by Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise and M Y Associate Co Ltd, was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning.

It was attended by Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, officials of enterprises  and department under the ministry, Managing Director of M Y Association Co Ltd and members of Board of  Directors and guests.

Managing Director - of Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise U Aung Hlaing made an opening address on  the occasion. Then, Managing Director of Kuwait Petroleum (Thailand) Limited Mr Gerrit Ruitinga explained  the use of Q8 engine oil and lubricating oil and Writer Theikpan Hmu Tin the quality of engine oil and  lubricating oil and replied queries raised by those present.


(9) Meeting on monitoring and evaluation of National Health Plan held

YANGON, 20 July-A preliminary coordination meeting on monitoring and evaluation of National Health Plan  was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Health on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road this morning, addressed  by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo.

Also present were Secretary of National Health Committee Director-General of Health Planning Department  Dr Kyi Soe and deputy directors-general, rectors, directors, project managers and officials
of the Ministry of  Health. Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo spoke on the occasion. Dr Kyi Soe reopened on progress of work in  implementing National Health Plan. Dr Rusdi Aludin of WHO and Director (Health
Information System) Daw  Htay Htay also discussed matters related to design procedure of NHP monitoring and evaluation. Broad  programme directors reported on progress of work and future tasks pertaining to National Health Plans.  Then, a general round of discussions followed.

(10) Books donated to libraries of Information and Public Relations Department

YANGON, 20 July-A ceremony to donate different kinds of books to libraries of Information and Public Relations Department of Ministry of Information was held at the head office of IPRD, Pansodan Street,
this  morning.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of IPRD  U Chit Naing, Director General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, Managing Director of  News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, officials of the departments and enterprises under the ministry  and donors. Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein accepted the donations and presented  certificates of honour to the donors. Then, the donors explained the purpose of the donations, and the deputy  minister expressed the gratitude.


(11) Commander visits Vegetable Production Centre in Hmawby

YANGON, 20 July- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than
inspected  regional development and agricultural work in Hmawby Township, Yangon North District, this afternoon.

The commander inspected the raising of cattle and poultry and cultivation of vegetables and cashew nut  plantations at the local battalion in Hmawby. Acting Commanding Officer Maj Aung Win Oo reported on  cultivation and livestock breeding work.

The commander gave instructions on cultivation of vegetables and perennial crops. Then, the commander  went to Yangon Division Vegetable Production Centre at Nyaung Hnatpin Village near
Hsatthwataw Village in  Hmawby Township.

The commander gave instructions on completion of cultivation of vegetables by September and arrangements to make the Centre green with vegetable patches, and attended to the requirements of
local  people.

Afterwards, Deputy Commissioner of Yangon North District General Administration Department U Saw Hla  Myint reported on the condition of cultivation of vegetables on 50 acres of land, and officials on cultivation of  crops on over 190 acres of land including 10 acres put under  vegetables by Myanma Farms Enterprise, 20  acres by the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Race and Development Affairs, 15.5 acres by  Myanma Agriculture Service, 15 acres by the Ministry of Energy and 80 acres by private agricultural  entrepreneurs of Yangon Division. Then, the commander attended to the requirements of the private  agricultural entrepreneurs. Next, the commander inspected the
cultivation of vegetables and nurseries at the  Centre.

(12) Inter-township primary schools football tournament opens

YANGON, 20 July-A opening ceremony of inter-township primary schools football tournament under No 3  Basic Education Department (Yangon) of Ministry of Education, was held at Salin Ground in
Kyimyindine  Township this morning, attended by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General of Education Planing and Training Department U Bo  Win, Deputy Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department U Tin Win and the deputy directors-general, township education officers, headmasters and officials of the departments under the ministry. First, the competing teams took designated places in the playground. Then, the deputy minister  made an opening address. After that, the school boys and girls of the education primary schools presented  entertainment to the audience,

Next, General Manager of Sweety Home Industry Co Ltd U Kyaw Thin and Deputy General Manager U Maung  Maung presented K 1 million for the tournament to Deputy Director-General of No 3 Basic Education  Department U Tin Win. Then, the North Okkalapa team met Dagon (East) Township team.


(13) Over 112,224 voters of Chauk Township Constituencies-1 and 2 unanimously submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 20 July-Voters from Chauk Township constituency 1, Magway Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Myint Thein elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National  League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Chauk Township  Constituency- 1 and no support for him and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies at two venues held in  Chauk Township on 5 June morning.

Similarly, voters from Chauk Township constituency 2, Magway Division, expressed no support for pessimist  National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at rallies in two venues on 5 June in Chauk  Township. A total of 9,540 people from 19 village-tracts attended the rally in Basic Education High School No  1 in Chauk Township.

On behalf of attendance s, U Bo expressed no confidence in U Myint Thein elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy and no support for him and petitioned for dissolving it. U  Hla Tun and U San Maung, on behalf of local people, presented petitions signed by the people to member of  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Education Officer U Tun Lwin.

A total of 6,537 people from 15 village-tracts rallied in Gwaycho Village. On behalf of attendance s, U San  Thu expressed no confidence in U Myint Thein elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League  for Democracy and no support for him and petitioned for dissolving it.  U Tin Sein and U Cho Pyone, on behalf  of local voters, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-commission U Ko Ko Naing. The ceremonies
ended with chanting of the slogan-Our  Three Main National Causes. a Out of 38,181 eligible voters of Chauk Township Constituency-l, 29,135 or  76.31 per cent voted for U Myint Thein of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. Out of 64,409  eligible voters in Chauk Township Constituency-l, the number of people who presented .  signed petitions of no confidence in U Myint Thein, no support for him and the petitions for dissolving NLD,  totaled 5S,780 or 86.60 per cent.

Altogether 7,500 people from 11 village-tracts rallied in Salay - Basic  Education High School in Salay Village.

On behalf of attendance s, U Tin Maung Aye expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for  dissolving it. U Kyaw Kyaw, on behalf of voters, presented petitions signed by the people to Member of  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Zaw. Similarly, 6,700 voters from  15 villages railed in Pakhannge Village.

On behalf of attendance s, U Hla Shein, expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Khin Maung Myint, on behalf of local voters, presented petitions signed by the people to  Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Swe. The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes. Out of 38,047 totaled
voters  of Chauk Township Constituency-2, 28,501 or 74.90 per cent voted for U Myint Thein of NLD in 1990  Multiparty Democracy General Election. Out of 63,063 eligible voters in Chauk Township Constituency-2, the  number of people, who presented signed petitions for dissolving NLD, totaled 56,444 or 89.50 per cent.  There are 127,472 people, who can vote, in Chauk Township constituencies I
and 2. The number of people,  who expressed no sup port for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it-, is 112,224 people or 88.03 per  cent.

(14) Foreigner drug traffickers get prison terms

YANGON, 20 July - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and members of Anti-drug Squad, acting on information at 9.15 am on 21 April, 2000, searched Chinese citizens Lant Shin Whei, Phon Sein Yon and Yon Taung Chang in a van with number plate Tha/607 1 on its way from Kyukok  (Pangsai) to 105th Mile, and seized 73 sheaths stuffed with heroin weighing 0.73 kilo, which were kept in the  stockings concealed on the waist and legs of Lant Shin Whei.

Further investigation revealed that they swallowed the sheaths of heroin. The emergency operations were  performed on Phon Sein Yon and Yon Taung Chang to take out the sheaths of heroin as their lives were in  danger. Nineteen sheaths of heroin weighing 0.19 kilo were found in the intestine and colon of Phon Sein  Yon and thirty-six sheaths of heroin weighing 0.36 kilo in the stomach and colon of Yon Taung Chang at 3  pm that, day.

Seized from them were a total of 128 sheaths of heroin weighing 1.28 kilo including seventy-three sheaths of  heroin weighing 0.73 kilo found on their bodies and fifty-five sheaths of heroin weighing 0.55 kilo in their  stomachs and intestines.

In accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, action was taken against Lant Shin Whei,  24, of Sichuan Province, the People s Republic of China, Phon Sein Yon, 32, of Sichuan Province, and Yon  Taung Chang, 24, of Anyok Township, PRC.

Muse Police Station sent them to Muse District Court and a lawsuit was filed against them.

The Muse District Court handed down five years  imprisonment under Section 15 and thirty years imprisonment under Section 19 (A) with labour on Lant Shin Whei to serve concurrently, twenty years
imprisonment under Section 19 (A) with labour on Phon Sein Yon and fifteen years  imprisonment under  Section 19 (A) on Yon Taung Cian on 28 June 2000.


(15) 79,000 stimulant tablets seized in Shan State

YANGON, 20 July - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police  Force, acting on information, while waiting at the lane near Nilar Tun Guest House, Kutkai, Shan State  (North) arrested Branja of Ward 4, Kutkai together with 79,000 stimulant tablets bearing the word  W Y . On  further investigation, the authorities found a Toyota Van with number plate 2\ Ka 8611 which was used in  trafficking and a Point 38 pistol made in Germany on 26 June. Action has been taken against him in accord  with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law


(16) 21 NLD members of Pale Township resign of own accord

YANGON- 20 July Twenty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Sunshine Village-tract, Pale Township, Sagaing Division.

Twenty-one members of Sunshine Village-tract NLD Pale Township, Sagaing Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General
Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 6 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.
