(1) Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe receives Vice-President of Mr Hu Jintao and party

YANGON, 17 July-Chairman of the State Peace ant Development Council of the Union of Myanmar  Commander-in-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received the visiting Vice-President
of the People s Republic of China Mr Hu Jintao and party at the Credentials Hall of Pyithu Hluttaw Building  at 10 am today.

Also present at the call were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung  Aye, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung Deputy Minister for Foreign  Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

The PRC Vice-President and party were accompanied by Ambassador of PRC to the Union of Myanmar Mr  Liang Dong.


(2) Secretary-1 inspects construction of foundation for marble image at Min Dhamma Hillock

YANGON, 17 July- Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,  accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Min Dhamma Hillock
this evening.

The Secretary-l was welcomed by the deputy ministers, heads of departments and officials. The Secretary-1 inspected construction of foundation for the marble image at Min Dhamma Hillock. Deputy Chief Engineer (Architect) of Public Works U Aung Kyee Myint reported on architectural model of Gandhakutitaik and arrangements. The Secretary-l inspected preparations along the route for conveying marble image and the place where Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdawgyi (barge) is to be moored and construction of  Mingala Mandats. The Secretary-1 then gave instructions and left at 6.30 pm.


(3) Vice-President of People s Republic of China Mr Hu Jintao and Madame Liu Yongqing visit Shwedagon  Pagoda

YANGON, 17 July-Vice-President of the People s Republic of China Mr Hu Jintao and Madame Liu  Yongqing and party, currently here at the invitation of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development
Council General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San, accompanied by Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and wife; Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong and officials of the Ministry of  Foreign Affairs, visited Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

Visiting Vice-President Mr Hu Jintao and Madame Liu Yongqing and party were welcomed at the northern  stairway of the pagoda by Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

Vice-President Mr Hu Jintao and Madame Liu Yongqing and party observed the bell of King Thayawady on  the pagoda platform and visited Htidaw Pagoda.

Vice-President Mr Hu Jintao and Madame Liu Yongqing and party offered flowers, lights and incense sticks  to Buddha images at prayer hall at eastern stairway.

The visiting Vice-President and party donated cash and the Pagoda Board of Trustees presented a picture  of the pagoda to the guests.

The PRC Vice-President signed in the visitors  book and together with Minister U Thaung and wife posed  for photo at the north-east corner of the pagoda.

The PRC Vice-President and party went to the National Museum on Pyay Road at 11 am. They were  welcomed by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and officials of Department of Cultural Institute and
the National Museum.

The Vice-President signed in the visitors  book. Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt presented a lacquer ware  painting to the Vice-President.

The Vice-President and party arrived at Myanma Gems Museum of the Ministry of Mines on Kaba Aye  Pagoda Road at 3.15 pm. They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and officials.
They were conducted round the Myanma gems and jewellery displayed at Myanma Gems Hall by officials.

The Vice-President and party arrived at Maha Bandoola Bridge at 4.20 pm. They were welcomed by Deputy  Minister for Construction U Tint Swe ant officials of Public Works.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe extended greetings. Managing Director of Public Works U Nay Soe Naing reported on facts about the bridge.

The Vice-President ant party visited Maha Bandoola Bridge. The guests proceeded to Yangon-Thanlyin  Bridge and they were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin and
officials of Myanma Railways on the side of Thanlyin Township.

The guests observed the stone plaque erected to mark friendship between the Union of Myanmar and the  People s Republic of China for construction of the bridge.

(4) Production Unit (Public Relations)holds performing arts competitions

YANGON, 17 July-The Production Unit (Public Relations) held performing arts competitions at Yannyeinaye  Hall on Parami Road in Mayangon Township this morning.

The competitions were aimed at turning out promising persons who can achieve success in the Myanma  Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions.  Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State
Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army)Lt-Gen Tin Oo, senior military officers, artists, guests and competitors. The competitions include men s and women s old and modern songs competitions, men s and women s dance competitions and Myanmar traditional orchestra and modern music troupe competitions. A total of 282 competitors are taking part in the
301 individual competitions and 15 troupe competitions. The competitions will be held up to 23 July.


(5) Yangon Division will become drug free region after end of 15 year narcotic drug eradication plan

YANGON, 17 July - A meeting was held at Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Office this  afternoon to coordinate measures for implementing the first five-year project of the 15 year narcotic drug
eradication plan in Yangon Division.

Duties were also assigned to personnel concerned at the meeting. Member of the State Peace and  Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than delivered an address.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said efforts should be made to combat narcotic drugs from all  sectors in implementing the drug eradication project as a national tasks; and to develop the socio-economic life of the national people of the border ales and to end poppy cultivation in the areas. Tactics are being laid down to end drug production, eradication and abuse.

Yangon Division will become a drug-free region after implementing the 15 year narcotic drug eradication  plan. In implementing the plan, short-term five-years projects are being laid down in taking educative, treatment, rehabilitation and control measures. Efforts should be made in cooperation with the departments concerned in eradicating drugs area-wise in towns and districts. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than assigned drug eradication duties to Chairman of Yangon East District Council Lt-Col Aung Pyi, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt Col Maung Maung Sein and Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt Col San Matu.

Secretary of Yangon Division Committee for Drug Abuse Control Dr Ba Thaung explained the tasks of the  first five-year project of the 15-year narcotic drug eradication plan in Yangon Division. Participants also took
part in the discussions.

(6) Minister meets Ambassador of Australia

YANGON, 17 July-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Ambassador of Australia to the Union of Myanmar Mr Trevor Wilson at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 4 pm today. They cordially discussed the matter on promoting coordination in agricultural sector between the two countries.  Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint, departmental heads and officials.


(7) NPK Compound Fertilizer presented to Ministry of A&I

YANGON, 17 July-A ceremony to present 40 metric tons of NPK Compound Fertilizer for the Ministry of  Agriculture and irrigation by Sino Chen International Company, China was held at the office Ministry of
A&I on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2 pm today. On behalf of chairman of Sino Chen International Company, Manager Mr Cheng Kezhong presented the gift to Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin. Also present on the
occasion were responsible officials of the ministry.


(8) Minister for I & P meets Ambassador of Japan

YANGON, 17 July - Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met Ambassador of Japan Mr  Shigeru Tsumori, who called at his office this afternoon.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director General of  Immigration and National Registration Col Maung Htay and officials.

(9) Minister meets Canaan Farmer s School Chairman

YANGON, 17 July-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met with Chairman of  Canaan Farmer s School Dr Kim Bum-il and party of the Republic of Korea at his office this evening.

Also present at the call were Director-General of Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries U Kyaw Lwin,  Director-General of Livestock and Veterinary Department U Maung Maung Nyunt, Director-General of
Fisheries Department U Than Tun, Managing Director of Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise U Khin Maung Aye and Head of Office U Myint Swe.


(10) Minister meets Ambassador of Japan

YANGON, 17 July-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col  Thein Nyunt met Ambassador of Japan to the Union of Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori at 11.30 ant at his
office today.

They cordially discussed matters related to cultivation of poppy substitute Buckwheat and development  affairs of border areas. Also present at the call were Director-General Col Than Swe of Department for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and officials.


(11) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 17 July-National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting this afternoon at the  meeting hall of the National Convention Convening Commission.

Present at the meeting were Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin,  Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and members of the National Convention Convening Commission.
Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin gave a speech. The Secretary of NCCC and member of National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee presented
matters relating to the National Convention. Members of NCCC gave suggestions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Chairman.

(12) Seminar on Data Collection and Processing in Development Planning opens

YANGON, 17 July- Seminar on Data Collection and Processing in Development Planning, jointly sponsored  by the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and Statistical Information Institute for Consulting and Analysis (SINFONICA) of Japan, began at the International Business Centre this morning.  Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha addressed the opening ceremony. He said that plans designed to accelerate the rate of economic growth in Myanmar are being drawn up and  implemented; the employees of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development are directly concerned with drawing economic development plans; when plans are drawn, accurate date are very  important; in Myanmar, the market-oriented economic system is being adopted, so collection of data
concerning the private sector is necessary; the employees of the Ministry of National Planning and  Economic Development need to know and understand the techniques of data collection; collection of economic data from the private sector is of great importance in practising the market-oriented economic system; the seminar will provide the opportunity to study the role of collecting data in drawing, scrutinizing
and assessing economic plans and to share the experience of Japan; the seminar is opened in coordination  with Japanese embassy; the officials of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, the
Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Ministry of Industry-l and the Ministry of Mines are attending the seminar.

Japanese Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori and Chairman of SINFONICA Mr Kenemaru made speeches.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen  Zaw Tun, directors-general of departments under the. ministry, resource persons of SINFONICA Professor Mitsuru Ide, Professor Yoichi Nakamura, Professor Minoru Kiryu and Assistant Director Mr Masaaki Sato  and officials.

Altogether 50 officials are attending the seminar, which will last two days.


(13) 8 Shwebo Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON 17 July-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwebo Township,  Sagaing Division.

Eight members of Shwebo Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending  letters of resignation to Shwebo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 31 May, 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
