(1) Efforts required in implementing bilateral project to combat malaria HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis at  Myanmar-Thai border to ensure effective health care for grassroots

YANGON, 13 July-The National Health Committee held a special meeting at the Ministry of Health this  evening, with an address by Chairman of NHC Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, Deputy Minister for Health, Director of Medical Services  of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors- general and deputy directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health and officials.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein reported to the meeting on the work coordination meeting to  control and combat malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis at Myanmar-Thai border. Director-General of
Health Department Dr Wan Maung presented detailed facts about the meeting. Participants also took part in the discussions.

After looking into their requirements, the Secretary- I said . after Myanmar and Thailand had held a  meeting to jointly control and combat the contagious diseases malaria, HIV/ AIDS and tuberculosis at
the border areas between the two nations, a bilateral cooperation project was laid down, committees at different levels to implement the project formed and funds appropriated.

Efforts should be made to enable the grassroots and the border areas to enjoy the benefits of the  project. Priority should Be given to implementing control and treatment programmes concerning the  three contagious diseases and benefiting the grassroots through the proper work programmes and efficient use of the funds. Sincere goodwill is required in implementing the project to ensure effective  health care for the people of the border areas of the two nations as the funds are being financed by the
government as well as by the donor nations and humanitarian associations.

As the bilateral project is launched with the participation of international organizations and global humanitarian associations, Myanmar will use the assistance in the most effective way and will also give support to the task as necessary.

At a time when the government's serious efforts in controlling and combating HIV/AIDS are being ignored and slanders are being spread to discredit Myanmar, the government's endeavours in launching
anti-HIV/AIDS programmes including the present project being implemented with the international assistance should be publicized systematically to let the global community know them. Thus, not only
the Ministry of Health but also the related ministries and social organizations should strive in harmony and unison in implementing the project which will further enhance cooperation and goodwill between
Myanmar and Thailand and will also develop the health care activities in border areas. The meeting then approved the minutes.
