(1) Secretary-1 calls on President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan

YANGON, 9 July-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt called on President Mr Muhammad Rafiq Tarar of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at his office in Islamabad at 9.45 am on 5 July.

Together with the Secretary-l were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj- Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Defence Brig-Gen Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Myanmar Ambassador to Pakistan U Soe Win. Also present at the call were Secretary Mr Inam U Haque of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and senior officials.


(2) Secretary-1 attends launching ceremony of Yangon Industrial Park Project of Mingaladon Garden City

YANGON 9 July- ceremony to launch Yangon Industrial Park Project of Mingaladon Garden City being implemented by Zakabar Co Ltd in cooperation with the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction was held at- Mingala Mandat of the project at the corner of Khayaybin Road and Bo Teza Road near No 3 Highway in Mingaladon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, Managing Director of Zaykabar Co Ltd U Khin Shwe and members of the board of directors, departmental officials, national industrialists, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, students and guests.

U Khin Shwe reported on areas of the project, acres sold in the project, factories in operation and those under construction and power supply.  The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the stone plaque of the project.

Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein, Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw and U Khin Shwe formally opened the Yangon Industrial Park. The Secretary-1 inspected factories and workshops in Mingaladon and Shwepaukkan Industrial Park.

The Secretary-l, the ministers and party went to Garment Factory of Myanmar Joon-A International Co Ltd where they were welcomed by Managing Director Mr Lee Kwang Seok, factory manager U Shwe Tin and officials. The Garment Factory was established with the cent per cent investment of Myanmar Joon-A International Co Ltd of the Republic of Korea. Altogether 949 employees and eight foreigners are working in the factory that produces 125,000 units of jackets, knitted fabric wears and shirts per month for export.

The Secretary-1, the ministers and party proceeded to Garment Factory of D H Jin Sung Manufacturing Co Ltd where they were welcomed by Managing Director Mr Ro Hai Yong, Director Daw Tin Mi Mi Mar and employees.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the factory established with 95 per cent investment by Korea and f1ve per cent by Myanmar. The Garment Factory of D H Jin Sung Manufacturing Co Ltd with 900 employees produces reversible vests, coats, jackets and pants and exports 95% of the production. The Secretary-1 and party went to Management Office of Shwepaukkan Industrial Zone where Director-General U Arnt Kyaw reported on location of the project, allotment of plots and matters on the roads and power supply and factories.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions on establishment of industrial zones for urban development, job opportunities for local residents and the need to make concerted efforts. Sixty seven factories are now in operation and 20 are under construction. Some 2,700 factory workers are enjoying job opportunities.


(3) Secretary-1 attends enshrinement ceremony of MyoU pagodas at Mingaladon Garden City in Mingaladon Township

YANGON, 9 July-Ceremonies to donate cash to the trust fund for cleansing Kelasa Sandawshin Pagoda Sasana (5,000), to hand over a laetrile Buddha image and nine laetrile Arhat images to be kept for public obeisance at the Shwedagon Pagoda and to enshrine sacred objects in MyoU pagodas to be built at Mingaladon Garden City in Mingaladon Township were held at the respective places at Mingaladon Garden City this morning.

The ceremonies were attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The ceremony to donate cash to the trust fund for cleansing Kelasa Sandawshin Pagoda Sasana (5,000) took place at Aungmingala Ordination Hall of Maha Gandayon Kyaungtaik, Mingaladon Garden City at 8.30 am today. Before the ceremony started, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected sacred objects to be enshrined in MyoU Pagodas, scale models of MyoU Pagodas and documentary photos. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Nine Precepts from Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Kyaikhtihsaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannadipa gave Ovadakahta. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented offertories to Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Sobhita and Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Kyaikhtihsaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannadipa.

The ministers and well-wishers also presented offertories to members of the Sangha.  Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted donations presented by the well-wishers to the trust fund for cleansing Kelasa Sandawshin Pagoda Sasana (5000) kept for public obeisance at the northern stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda was held there at 9.15 am today.

First, Kyaikhtihsaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannadipa explained the history of the laetrile Buddha image and nine laetrile Arhat images.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt and officials offered 'soon' to Kyaikhisaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panndipa and members of the Sangha.

(4) Secretary-3 inspects display of 13th Gems and Jade Sale of UMEHL

YANGON 9 July-The Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd began the 1 3th Gems and Jade Sale at Myanma Gems Emporium on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint inspected the display of the sale.

The Secretary-3 was welcomed there by Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing of UMEHL and members of the board of directors. First, the Secretary-3 inspected jade lots on display on the ground floor of the emporium and gems lots on the first and second floors.

The Secretary-3 gave necessary instructions to officials and left there at 10.15 am. The 13th Gems and Jade Sale was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, diplomatic corps and officials of Myanma Gems Enterprise.


(5) 17th 47-member plenary meeting of the Fourth State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee continues

YANGON, 9 July-The second day session of the 17th 47 member plenary meeting of the Fourth State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee continued at Wizaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin Hall, Kaba Aye this morning.

Present were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Ratha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamn1ajotika Bhaddanta Kumara, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, officials and heads of Religious Affairs Departments in States and Divisions.

Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhafa Maha . Ratha Guru V Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa presided over the meeting . with Joint Secretary Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Candima acting. as master of ceremonies .

Agga Maha Pandita , Bhaddanta Tejaniya and Agga Maha. Pandita Bhaddanta Arcara and Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Candasire discussed religious Vinicchaya and education's tasks. Sayadawa various religious matters.

Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Candima discussed work done by the Fourth State Sangha Maha ; Nayaka Committee; (First group) during it fifth term.


(6) Minster supervises arrangements for conveying: Kyauktawgyi Image

YANGON 9 July-Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by department officials, supervised arrangements for conveying Kyauktawgyi Image at Sakyin Village, Madaya Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday and today.  Monks and people from far and near paid homage to the image day and night.  This morning, a large crowd exceeding 60,000 came to pay homage to the image.

(7) Chairman of Extended Prawn Breeding Committee inspects prawn breeding tasks in Rakhine State

YANGON, 9 July-Chairman of the Extended Prawn Breeding Committee Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Vice-Chairman Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, accompanied by officials, met prawn breeding entrepreneurs of Rakhine State at U Ottama Hall in Sittway yesterday afternoon.

At the meeting, Chairman of the Committee Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Vice-Chairman of the Committee Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein explained formation of the Extended Prawn Breeding Committee with the encouragement of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe F and arrangements for giving techniques to boost the output of prawn per acre in Rakhine State and measures for security of prawn breeding ponds to the entrepreneurs.

Then, the entrepreneurs from Sittway, Ponnagyun, Pauktaw, Yathedaung and Maungtaw townships reported on their requirements.

Managing Director U Aung Naing Oo of Annawa Mon Cooperative Society Ltd which produces feedstuff: for prawn breeding and prawn expert U Khin Maung Soe of the Fisheries Department reported on technology for prawn breeding and production matters. The Chairman and the Vice-Chairman attended to their needs.

After the meeting, those present viewed prawn breeding equipment and feed stuff displayed by Annawa Mon Cooperative Society Ltd.

Then, ministers and party proceeded to the. sea prawn delivery and breeding y farm being built in Yegyanbuin Sittway, by Fisheries Department. Assistant Director U Khin Maung Soe of FD reported on progress in building tasks and arrangements for operating the task.

Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein instructions on work. Then, they inspected the farm.


(8) Illicit drug possessor and user get imprisonment

YANGON, 9 July-The Dawbon Township Court handed down a sentence of seven years' imprisonment on an illicit drug possessor on 12 May 2000.

Acting on information, members of Yangon Division Anti-Drug Squad, at 2.35 pm on 3 October 1999, searched a suspect Ya Thein, 38, son of U Maung Maung, of Nawaret Koethwe Street, Ward 56, Dagon Myothit (South), on Dhamayon Street, Dawbon, and seized 0.0092 gram of marijuana in his possession.

He was tried under Section 16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.  Likewise, the Mogok Township Court handed down a sentence of five and seven years' imprisonment on a drug user and possessor to serve separately on 6 June 2000.

Members of Mogok Township MPF, at 4.35 pm on 30 March 2000, searched Am San (a) Kyaw Lwin, son of U Yan Chein Chwum, of Hohmine Ward, Mogok, in the street, and seized 0.0000275 gram of heroin on him.

He was tried under Section 15/16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to five and seven years' imprisonment to serve separately.


(9) Myanmar sports delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 9 July- A five-member Myanmar sports delegation comprising three of the information committee, one of ASEAN Football Federation Council and an executive of Myanmar Football Federation left here for Thailand by air this morning to attend the meeting to draw schedule of the Third ASEAN Tiger Cup Soccer Tournament and the Press Conference to be held m Bangkok, Thailand, from 9 to 11 July.

The Third ASEAN Tiger Cup Soccer Tournament will be held in November 2000. The delegation includes U Kyi Nyunt (Sagaing Kyi Nyunt), U Tun Tha (Maung Ye Win), Deputy Chief Editor U- Win Tin of the Myanma Alin Daily, member of ASEAN Football Federation Council and Secretary of MFF U Banny Tin Aung and, executive Director U Win Lwin of Forest Department. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by officials of Sports and Physical Education Department.

(10) 15 Mingin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON 9 July-Fifteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingin Township, Sagaing Division. Fifteen members of Mingin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 14 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
