(1)Extended prawn breeding to be carried out in 120,000 acres under three year plan

YANGON, 7 July-A coordination meeting, on extended prawn, breeding in  Ayeyawady Division took place at the Prime Minister's Office on Shwedagon  Pagoda Road here at 8 am today and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave advice.

The meeting was also attended by Chairman of the Extended Prawn Breeding  Committee Minister at the prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe , minister,  Deputy minister and departmental personnel.

Chairman of the committee Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe said the committee has been implementing a three-year project for the success of extended prawn  breeding. Next, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, who is the Extended Prawn Breeding Committee's Ayeyawady Division in-charge, said he had  already conducted field trips to areas where extended prawn breeding could be  carried out. He said entrepreneurs were found to favor Chaungtha, Ngwehsaung  and Ngapudaw areas and he had coordinated measures with those concerned of  Ayeyawady Division for the success of the project.

Afterwards, Chairman of Myaungmya District Peace and Development Council  Lt-Col Tin Aye and officials explained the present condition of prawn breeding in the district and work done to facilitate extended prawn breeding  in the region. Vice-Chairman of the Committee Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung  Thein then reported on his inspection tour of the areas for extended prawn breeding and work done for the success of the project by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.

In response to the presentations, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo made arrangements to meet the requirements and said extended prawn breeding work in Ayeyawady Division is most promising and assured that necessary assistance will be provided.


(2) Secretary-2 attends construction project of Ye-Dawei-Myeikt -Taninthayi Bokpyin Kawthoung Road

YANGON, 7 July-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address at the coordination meeting on construction of Ye-Dawei-Myeik-Taninthayi-Bokpyin-

Kawthoung Road at the meeting hall of Public Works at 5.30 pm today. Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said that smooth and better transport is a basic need for development of a region; the State, on its part, is building new roads as well as new bridges to ensure better transport.

Taninthayi Division is a region which has good opportunities for development;  and smooth and better transport will lead to further ,progress of the  division. Old roads are being repaired and new ones constructed for  development of Taninthayi Division. Among the new road, arrangements to  upgrade Ye-Dawei-Myeik-Taninthayi- Bokpyin-Kawthoung motor-road will begin  this open season.

In conclusion, the Secretary-2 said that skilled workers and  technicians should be mobilized and necessary materials  should be stockpiled in order to accelerate the momentum of work in the open  season. The Secretary-2 gave necessary instruction. open season.


(3) Peace, stability and rule of Law most basic requirement for peaceful,  pleasant, modern, developed nation

YANGON,7 July -Coordination meeting on Crime Reduction and Traffic Rules  Enforcement was held at the meeting hall of Ministry of Home Affairs at 1 pm  today, with an address by Secretary -2 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Secretary of the committee Police Col Maung Maung Soe acted as master of  ceremonies. Secretary-2 said Crime Reduction, Public Education and  Information Committee has already held many coordination meetings to date.  The present meeting was held to evaluate the accomplishments of the Committee  which is over three years old and to Coordinate matters on traffic rules  enforcement. The Committee was formed and assigned duties in order to reduce  the crime rate, to uplift crime prevention activities, to expose offenders,  to file law suits against law breakers, to take effective action against  offenders and to educate the public in ensuring the rule of law; in Yangon  Division. Four subordinate bodies Crime Reduction Subcommittee, Public  Education Sub-committee Information Subcommittee and Disciplinary  Subcommittee were formed under the Committee carrying out duties in  cooperating with the people in restoring regional peace and tranquillity and  tranquillity and the rule of law and order. The Secretary-2 gave suggestions.

(4) Seminar on Current International Issues Affecting Forestry and Forest  Products opens

YANGON, 7 July-A ceremony to open the Seminar on Current International Issues  Affecting Forestry and Forest Products hosted for the first time in Myanmar  was held at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning, with an  opening address by Deputy. Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun. Also present  on the. occasion were directors-general   and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of  Forestry, the Director-General of ASEAN Affairs Department of the Ministry of  Foreign Affairs, officials of Myanmar National Commission for Environmental  Affairs, departmental heads, delegates from ASEAN member nations Brunei,  Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia,  representatives of UNCTAD, ITTO, FAO and ASEAN Secretariat, departmental  officials and NGOs of Forest Resource and Environment Development Association  (FREDA), Forest Products Joint Venture Corporation Ltd, Myanmar Forest  Products and Timber Merchants' Association, Wildlife Conservation Society  (Myanmar Programme) and observers. In conclusion of his address, the Deputy Minister urged
 those delegates attending the Seminar,  and act accordingly so as, to sustain  the  forest not only for the  21st century, but for many centuries to come. He also expressed his belief that  after the  deliberations over the next(2) days, the participants would be able to make  recommendations, regarding the current international forestry issues to the  ASOF meeting.


(5) Minister meets Australian Ambassador

YANGON, 7 July-Minister for Education U Than Aung met Australian Ambassador  to Myanmar Mr Trevor Wilson at his office at 2 pm today. They cordially  discussed bilateral cooperation in education sector.  Also present were Deputy  Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt and officials.


(6) Seminar on Current International Issues Affecting Forestry and Forest  Products held

YANGON, 7 July-Opening ceremony of Seminar on Current International Issues  Affecting Forestry and Forest Products, hosted by Myanmar for the first time,  was held at the meeting hall of Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this  morning.

Delegates from ASEAN countries Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines,  Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia, representatives of UNCTA, ITTO and FAO  the director-general of Department of ASEAN Affairs of Ministry of Foreign  Affairs, officials of Myanmar National Commission for Environmenta1 Affairs,  delegates from ASEAM Secretariat, observers, officials NGOs in Myanmar Forest  Resources and Environmental Conservation and Development Association; Forest  Products Joint Venture Corporation Ltd, Myanmar Forest Products and Timber  Merchants' Association and Wildlife Conservation Society Myanmar Programme  attended the ceremony.  First, Dr Azmil Mat Ak Hir of ASEAN Secretariat  discussed background information about the seminar. Then, first session of  the seminar started. Dr Nana Supnana of Indonesia acted as the moderator and  Dr David P Elliott of UNCTAD presented the paper "Trade Policy Related  Aspects of Sustainable Forest Management of All Types of Forests". In the  second session, Director General U Soe Tint of Planning and Statistics  Department Ministry of Forestry, Myanmar, acted as the moderator. Mr Amha Bin  Buang of ITTO read the paper "Sustainable Forest Management and Tropical  Timber Trade". In the third session, Dr Sofio B Quin Tana of the Philippines  acted as moderator. Mr Patrkk Drust of FAO presented the paper "Strategic  Framework Plan for the Forestry Sector each session queries were answered by  the resource persons. Finally, the agenda for the next day was discussed and  the seminar came to an end. The seminar will continue to morrow.

(7) Minister inspects airport projects

YANGON, 7 July .  sMinister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe accompanied by  officials arrived at the office of Mandalay International Airport Project on  5 July. Superintending Engineer U Bon Kyi of Public Works reported on  construction of two reinforced concrete bridges on the entrance road,  General Manager of the airport Lt-Col Tun Hlaing reported on the condition of aviation control devices, power supply and machinery,  construction of Fire Brigade building, construction of a road between the  runway and the Fire Brigade building, greening work of airport environs and  construction of staff housing with , the use of charts. The minister gave  instructions and attended to their needs.

Afterwards, the minister inspected the repair work of Pansaychaung bridge on  the entrance road of the airport and the construction of staff housing.

The minister and party proceeded to Kalay on 6 July. The minister heard  reports on improvement of the runway and construction of new building at the  briefing hall of the project office.

Then, the minister inspected the runway, the apron, the fence and  construction of new building and gave instructions.


(8) Well-wishers donate medicines, equipment to MMCWA

YANGON, 7 July-Well-wishers presented donations to Myanmar Maternal and Child  Welfare Association at the Multi-purpose Building of MMCWA at the comer of  Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkapala Township this afternoon. Present  on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe,  Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Central Executive Committee members  and well-wishers.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe accepted a Honda Super Cub motor-cycle worth K 650,000  donated by the Office of Strategic Studies, K 1 million by U Maung Maung Sein  of Novel 3, an air-conditioner worth K 320,000 for Child All-round  Development Centre by U Thein Maung-Daw Pa Pa (Sandi Traditional Medicines)  family, medicines valued at K 112,680 by Myanmar International Trading Co Ltd  and medicines worth K 130,000 for Women's Breast Cancer Lab by Managing  Director Dr Aye Kyaw of Kyaw Pharmaceutical Co Ltd.


(9) Illegal drug possessors get 7 and 5 years

YANGON, 7 July-Members of Yangon Division Anti drug Squad searched one  suspect Win Naing, 26, son of U Tin Ohn, No 197, Zawtika Street, Ward 4 of  Thingangyun Township, at the Bus-stop of Phonegyi Street in North Okkalapa  Township, on 1 September 1999. The authorities arrested him together with  1.02 grams of marijuana. On 1 June 2000, he was tried under Section 16 (C) of  Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to 7 years  imprisonment by North Okkalapa Township Court. Similarly, members of Lashio  Township Anti-drug Squad searched one suspect San Htaik, 30, son of U Maung  Maung, of Ward 7, Lashio Township on the road on 13 January 1999. The  authorities arrested him together with 0.0001 kilo of heroin. On 26 March  1999, he was tried under Section 15 of Narcotic Law and sentenced to 3 years'  imprisonment and under Section 16 (C) of the law and sentenced to 5 years'  imprisonment to serve concurrently by Lashio Township Court.

(10) Voters of Kawlin Township unanimously petition for dissolving Pessimist  NLD

YANGON, 7 July-Voters from Kawlin Township, Sagaing Division expressed no  support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for  dissolving NLD at five venues on 25 May.

A total of 8,324 people from village-tracts rallied at Township Sport Grounds  in Kawlin. On behalf of attendance's, U Myo Tint of Sekyon Lebyin Ward  expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of wards and villages, on behalf of attendance's.

Presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multi-party  General Election Sub-commission Daw Khin Nyo. Altogether 4,568 people from  village-tracts rallied in

Kyaukpyintha Village. On behalf of attendance's, Headmaster U Kyaw Win of  Basic Education Primary School of Inngu Village expressed no support for  pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives of wards and  villages, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people  to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U  Maung Maung Lwin.

Likewise, 7,435 people from village-tracts rallied at Khantha Village BEHS.  On behalf of attendance's, U Soe Maung of Khantha Village expressed no  support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives  of wards and villages, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed  by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Than Tun. A total of 6,217 people from village-tracts  rallied at Okkan Village BEHS.

On behalf of attendance's, U Thein Myint of Ainggyi Village expressed no  support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives  of wards and villages, on be half of attendance's, presented petitions signed  by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Nyunt. Similarly, 1,560 people from village-tracts rallied  at Shwedwin Village BEPS. On behalf of attendance's, U Thein Lwin of  Shankalon Village ex- pressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for  dissolving it. Representatives of wards and villages, on behalf of  attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Maung Win.

The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National  Causes. There are 65,639 people, who can vote, in Kawlin Township. The number  of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for  dissolving it, is 63,048 people or 96.05 per cent.


(11) Mandalay North-West Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 7 July-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy  of Mandalay North- West Township, Mandalay Division.

Eight members of Mandalay North-West Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of  their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mandalay  North-West Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and  the party concerned on 13 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate  in party politics of NLD.
