(1)State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe  congratulates new Japanese PM

YANGON, 6 July-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  and  Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of congratulations to His Excellency
Mr Yoshiro  Mori on his election as Prime Minister of Japan.


(2)  Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and Madame visit Bagan, Inlay

YANGON, 5 July -The visiting Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee General  VP Malik and Madame and delegation, who are here on a goodwill visit at the . invitation of
Vice-Chairman of  the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander  in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, left here for Bagan-NyaungU by air yesterday morning. Accompanied by  Director of Military Training of Ministry of Defence Brig Gen Aung Kyi, Indian Military Attache to Myanmar Col  Shakti Gurung and officials, General VP Malik and delegation arrived at Bagan Nyaung U Airport at 9 am.  Then, the guests proceeded to Tatmadaw Guest House No 2 in Bagan and took a rest there for a while.

Later, they visited donations. The Pagoda Board of Trustees presented a picture of the pagoda to the general. Next, the Indian General and delegation visited Myanma Lacquerware Institute in Bagan, and
Staff  Officer U Khin Aung took them on a tour of the institute and the Lacquerware Museum. They then proceeded  to Bagan Archaeological Museum, and officials conducted them around it. The guests together with Maj-Gen  Ye Myint had souvenir photos taken there. The General signed in the visitors' book of the museum.

After the lunch, General VP Malik and Madame and Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife exchanged gifts. The guests  then visited Ananda Pagoda where General VP Malik signed in the visitors' book and made donations. In the  afternoon, the General and delegation proceeded to Heho by air.

They were seen off at Bagan-NyaungU Airport by Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and their wives.  General VP Malik and delegation arrived at Heho Airport at 4.20 pm.  The guests then
proceeded to Taunggyi  where they spent the night. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo and wife hosted dinner in honour of the Indian  General and Madame and delegation at Thanlwin Hall of Eastern
Command.

After the dinner, General VP Malik and Madame and Maj-Gen Maung Bo and wife exchanged souvenirs.

The Indian General presented a flower basket to the cultural troupe of national races who entertained the  dignitaries at the dinner.  This morning, together with Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party, guests visited Inlay  PhaungdawU Buddha images.

General VP Malik signed in the visitors' book and made donations there.  Afterwards, they visited Shwehintha  Weaving industry in Thalay Village and Seinthamadi Gold and Silver Smith in Heya-ywama Village.Maj-Gen  Maung Bo hosted lunch in their honour at Inlay Yele Guest House from  which the guests enjoyed the beauty  of Inlay Lake . The Indian goodwill delegation left Heho by air at 4.10 pm.

(3) Ways and means sought for private and cooperative sectors to take part more in livestock and fisheries  sector

YANGON, 5 July-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with livestock  breeding entrepreneurs this afternoon at Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise.

 The Secretary-2 said the State Peace and Development Council is making efforts with added momentum for  progress of the agriculture, industrial, livestock and fisheries and trade sectors with a view to
developing the  national economy. The nation's livestock and fisheries sector has good potentials for development. It can  become a reliable economic sector for the nation.

 The livestock and fisheries sector is the fourth largest contributor to the GDP after the agricultural, trade and  industrial sectors. Not only the State-owned sector but also the private sector should participate for progress  of the sector. Accepting the guidance as work guidelines, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries is laying  down and implementing the work programmes. The State-owned sector, the cooperative sector and the  private sector should make harmonious efforts in implementing
the work programmes. Partnership  programmes are being launched to distribute pedigree strains and extend poultry farming in villages. After  the meeting the commander the ministers and party studied the farm products.

(4) Deputy Minister for F & R meets guests from Japan

YANGON, 5 July-Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig Gen Than Tun met Executive Director Mr H  Takahashi of Tokai Bank Foundation, Japan and Chief Representative Mr Masayoshi Yamada of
Tokai Bank  Ltd, Japan at the office of Minister for Finance and Revenue on Sethmu Road, Yankin Township at 10 am  today. Also present at the call were Governor U Kyaw Kyaw Maung of Central Bank of Myanmar and Managing  Director U Zaw Win of Myanma Investment and Commercial Bank.


(5)  Prizes presented to winners in News photo Contest in  Commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

YANGON, 5 July-A ceremony to present prizes to winner in News Photo Contest in commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held at the Tatmadaw Convention
Centre this  evening.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Home  Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers, senior  military officers, CCDAC Secretary Myanmar Police Force Director-General Police Maj-Gen Soe Win,  departmental heads and officials and prize winners.

Minister Co Tin Hlaing presented  the first prize for display to the booth of Ministry of Progress of Border  Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, the second prize to the booth of public education and  the third prize to the booth on international relations and fight against drugs.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung also presented special prizes to those of the booths on cultivation of poppy  substitute crops, livestock breeding and treatment, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint  Maung to rehabilitation booth, organization booth and Ministry of Construction booth  and Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung to those for the photos on booths of  Myanmar Anti Narcotics Association and CCDAC.


(6)  Minister inspects regional greening projects

YANGON, 5 July-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met with local authorities and  officials at Pauk on 3 July. Farmers of Pauk, Saw and Seikphyu townships were also present. Pumped-water  projects, dams and regional development were discussed at the meeting.

Officials of Irrigation Department and Myanma Agriculture Service also took part in the discussions. The  minister explained the State's implementation of agricultural projects Regionwise. Accompanied by
officials,  the minister inspected Yaw Creek Pumped -Water Project near Yebyu village in Pauk Township.

Plans are under way to build a series of dams on Yaw Creek and pumped-water stations along it. Officials  should disseminate crop cultivation techniques to farmer's. the minister stressed during his
inspection of a  model plot at Nyaungbinwun village in Pakokku Township. In Pakokku, the minister inspected cotton milling  factories-and gave suggestions to officials on matters relating to cotton
purchase. The minister looked into  the requirements. Officials conducted the minister around the project.

(7)  Third Meeting of ASEAN Experts Group on Herbal and Medicinal Plants and Second Meeting of ASEAN  Experts Group on R & D for Forest Products open

YANGON, 5 July -The Third Meeting of the ASEAN Experts Group on Herbal and Medicinal Plants and the  Second Meeting of the ASEAN Experts Group on Research and Development for Forest Products
opened at  Sedona. Hotel this morning.

Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun delivered the opening address.

He said :It is indeed an honour to welcome such a gathering of experts from the two very important fields of  forestry. I have been dealing with forestry matters every day, so I am aware of the fact that forestry is  becoming increasingly important, not only for the betterment of mankind butter the survival of all the living  beings, on the earth.

Now, let me touch upon the subjects for which, we are gathered here today. You all know that, in all the ASEAN countries, the traditional medicines play a major role, especially in rural areas. Nowadays, even
in  the western countries, more and more people are preferring the medicines made from natural herbs, rather  than the modern drugs based on chemical compounds, which can have serious side effects.

Traditional remedies, using medicinal plants are an aged old practice in every culture of our peoples in Asia.  In China, the Traditional Chinese Medicine is being practised for about 2000 years of recorded history, and  the influence of Indian Ayurvedic medicine is being practised all over Asia since time immemorial. No doubt,  the traditional medicines are beneficial to health and have wonderful cures for some illnesses, butter exist  daunting challenges for you gentlemen, to overcome. That is to modernize and to make the traditions more  scientific so that it can be accepted in other parts of the world as well. Herbal Medicine is not only important  for health purposes, but for trade also, because the world market for herbal medicines is estimated to grow  to about 12 billion dollars over the next 10 years. In conclusion, I want to thank you for listening patiently to  such a lengthy welcoming address and I am
sure that after your discussions over the next 2 days on your  specialized subjects, you will be able to produce some very good ideas and recommendations, to be  submitted to the ASOF meeting.

Also present were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Forestry, heads of departments delegates of Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand,
Vietnam,  Laos and Indonesia, officials, delegates of Myanmar and guests.


(8) Minister for Energy arrives back

YANGON, 5 July-A delegation led by Minister for Energy Brig- Gen Lun Thi arrived here yesterday after  attending the 18th Meeting of ASEAN Energy Ministers and Meeting of Senior Officials held in
Hanoi, Vietnam  from 29 June to 3 July.

The delegation comprised Director General U Soe Myint of Energy Planning Department, Managing Director  U Kyaw Shein of Myanma Petrochemical 'Enterprise and Executive Geologist U Tin Zaw Myint.


(9) ASEAN Experts Group Meetings on Herbal and Medicinal Plants and Research and Development for  Forest Products begin

YANGON, 5 July-The Third Meeting of the ASEAN Experts Group on Herbal and Medicinal Plants and the  Second Meeting of the ASEAN Experts Group on Research and Development for Forest Products
began at  Sedona Hotel this morning.

Delegates of Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia and observers were present.

The meetings discussed Exchange of Comprehensive Data on Herbal and Medicinal Plants (1999-2000), Submission of Five Species of Medicinal Plants/Profile of Selected Family (1999-2000) and Harmonisation of  Database Format (1999-20.01), Establishment of Database on ASEAN Herbal and Medicinal Plants  (AHMP;Database).

At the Coordination of R&D Activities and Sharing of Specific Information session, Documentation of R&D  Information/Directory (project brief & institution) (1999-2001), Cultivation/ Propagation/Selection of Elite  Genetic Material (1999-2001) and Photochemical Screening of Flora for the Therapeutic Aromatic
Value  (1999-2001) were discussed.

Training Programme on the Pharmacognostical Evaluation of Medicinal Plants (1999-2004) was discussed  at Development of Training Programmes (Seminars & Workshops) in Appropriate Areas
session.

At the Organization Workshops, Workshop on Registration and Licensing of Traditional Medicine (20002004), Workshop on Conservation and, Cultivation of Herbal and Medicinal Plants (2002) and
Workshop on Extraction of Essential Oil and Marketing of Medicinal Plants (1999-2004).

The meeting was adjourned in the evening.

(10) Minister attends 18th ASEAN Energy Ministers Meeting

YANGON, 5 July- A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Energy Brig Gen Lun Thi left here by air on 1 July  for Vietnam to attend 18th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting which was held in Vietnam
from 29 June to 3  July.

The delegation was welcomed at Hanoi International Airport by Ambassador of Union of Myanmar to Vietnam  U Khin Aung and Embassy staff and officials of Vietnam.

The Myanmar delegation participated with ASEAN member nations at ASEAN Energy Senior Officials Meeting  which was held at Daewoo Hotel, Hanoi from 30 July to 1 July.

The 18th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting was held on 3 July. Ministers for Energy of ASEAN member  nations attended the meeting. Prime Minister of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai made a speech at
the meeting.

They discussed matters related to energy sectors, Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipe Line Project and ASEAN Power  Grid in ASEAN member nations.

The 19th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting will be held in first week of July 2001 in Brunei.


(11) Illegal drug Possessors get ten and five years

YANGON, 5 July- Members of Anti drug Squad (Yangon Division) searched suspect Aung Kyaw, 41, of  Kyundaw Street, Kyundaw Ward at Wakema Street, Sangyoung Township on 6 February 2000 and
found  9.148 grams of marijuana on him.

Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon  West District Court handed down ten years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on him on 26
May 2000.

Similarly, members of Namhkam Township Police Force, acting on information, searched the, house of Sai  Tun, 30, of Naunghkan Ward, Namhkam Township on 6 December 1998 and found 0.0025 kg of
heroin.  Action was taken against him according to law. The Namhkan Township Court handed down three years'  imprisonment under Section 16 and five yeas' imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on 3 February 1999 on  him to serve concurrently.


(12) Voters of Wuntho Township unanimously petition for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 5 July-Voters from Wuntho Township, Sagaing Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at six venues on 23 May morning.

A total of 5,305 people from five wards and nine villages attended the rally at Myoma Sports Ground.

On behalf of attendees, behalf of people of villages, presented petitions signed by the people to member  of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission Township Law Officer Daw San Wai.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes.

Altogether 2,116 people from five villages attended the rally at the Sports Ground in Kinmyintha Village.

On behalf of attendance's, Farmer U Kyaw Myint of Kyeinhpugon Village expressed no support for pessimist  NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Aye Maung of Kyeinhpugon Village, on by 2,402
people from seven  village-tracts at Basic Education Middle School in Gyotaung Station.

On behalf of people, Midwife Daw San San Thin of Gyotaung Station expressed no support for pessimist  NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Tin Maung, on behalf of people of village-tracts, presented petitions  signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission  Township Judged U Aung Min.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes. A similarly rally was  attended by 4,025 people from seven village-tracts at the compound of the People's Hospital in
Nankham  Station.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Hla Tun expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. A people, on behalf of people of village-tracts, presented to member of Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission. Head of Township Immigration and National Registration  Department U Tin Ngwe. The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes.  Likewise, 2,330 people from five villages attended the rally at Basic Education Primary School in Kyungon  Village, Wuntho East Station.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Toe Hla of Armakhan Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD  and petitioned for dissolving it. U San Myint of Painnegon Village, on behalf of people of village-
tracts,  presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multi party Democracy General Election  Sub-commission Head of Township Head Department Dr Daw Khin Lay Lwin. The
ceremony ended with  chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes.   tended by 1,530 people from five village-tracts at the Sports Ground in Kyaingkhwin Village, Wuntho South  Station.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Kyaw Swe of Kyaingkhwin Village expressed no support for pessimist  NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Kan Nyein of Kyaingkhwin Village, on behalf of people of Village tract,  presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission Head of Township Forest Department U Khin Maung Sint.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes. There are 36,780 people  who can vote in Wuntho Township. The number of people who expressed no support for NLD
and signed  petitions for dissolving it was 36,046 people or 98 percent.

(13) 33 Ye Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 5 July-Thirty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ye Township,  Mon State.

Thirty-three members of Ye Township NLD, Mon State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of  resignation to Ye Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the
party  concerned on 11 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
