(1) Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and Madame arrive

YANGON, 3 July-At the invitation of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee General party arrived here by special flight at 10 am today to pay a goodwill visit in Myanmar.

The Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and Madame and party were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Staff (Army) and Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla , Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and Military Attache Col Shakti Gurung and their wives.

Then, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San together with General VP Malik and Madame and party went to the special lounge. After taking the salute of the' Guard of Honour, General Maung Aye and General VP Malik inspected it. Next General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and the Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and Madame and party left Yangon International Airport for Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road by car.


(2)  General Maung Aye meets Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chief of Staff Committee and party

YANGON, 3 July-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye met Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee General VP Malik and party at Zeya Thiri Beikman Tatmadaw Hall on Konmyinttha at 2 pm today.

Also present at the call were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Staff (Army) and Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, members State Peace and development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Mai-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quarter master- General Lt- Gen Tin Hla and officials.  Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla and he Indian guests were accompanied by Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and Military Attache Col Shakti Gurung.


(3) Visiting Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and party visit Memorial to fallen Heroes and Shwedagon pagoda

YANGON, 3 July-Visiting Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee General VP Malik and party accompanied by Director of Military Training Department, Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shyam Saran, Military Attache Col Shakti Gurung and officials arrived at Memorial to Fallen Heroes at 3.40 pm today and were welcomed by Chairman of Maintenance Committee of Memorial to Fallen Heroes Brig- Gen Myo Myint and military officers.

Then, they laid the bouquet there and saluted the fallen heroes and signed in the visitors' book.  They proceeded to the Shwedagon Pagoda and were welcomed by the Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials. They went to the King Thayawady's Bell at South- East Corner and Htidaw Design Pagoda circled round the pagoda clockwise. Afterwards, the visiting Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and party offered flower and light to the Buddha Images at Western Tazaung.

They signed in the visitors' book and presented cash for the pagoda's fund to the board of trustees of the pagoda who presented the replica of the Htidaw Design Pagoda as a present and they left there at 4.30 Dm.

(4) General Maung Aye and wife host dinner in honour of Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and party

YANGON, 3 July-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San hosted dinner at Zeya Thiri Beikman Tatmadaw Hall on Konmyinttha in honour of visiting Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee General VP Malik and wife Dr Ranjana Malik and party; at 7 pm today.

Also present at the dinner were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Staff (Army) and Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Commander Mai-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, the ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence and their wives, Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and wife and Military Attache Col Shakti Gurung and wife and guests.  During and after the dinner, the guests were entertained with Myanmar traditional songs and dances presented by artists of Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture.



(5)  Wife of Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and party visit MMCWA

YANGON, 3 July-Dr Ranjana Malik, wife of the Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee and party, currently here at the invitation of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Daw Thet Thet Swe, wife of Director of Military Training Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, and officials, went to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Parami and Thanthuma Roads in South Okkalapa Township this afternoon.

They were welcomed there by Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and members of Central Executive Committee. At the multi-purpose hall of the association, Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained Matters concerning MMCWA. Then, they discussed bilateral material and child welfare matters.

Then, Dr Ranjana Malik presented cash and gifts to MMCWA. Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe accepted the donations, presented a souvenir to her and spoke words of thanks. Next, the wife of the Chief of Indian Army Staff and Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee signed in the visitors' book and viewed documentary photos of the activities of MMCWA.

Afterwards, the wife of the Chief of Indian Army; Staff and Chairman of Chief of Staff Committee and party visited the Child All-Round Development Centre, the Domestic; Science School and the Women's Disease Lab in the compound of MMCWA.



(6)  Secretary-3 gives instructions on agriculture, livestock breeding

YANGON, 3 July-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, together with commanders, ministers, deputy ministers and departmental officials inspected Tarlawgyikwin and Hsinbokwin in Kachin State, Manpinkwin, Tarhona, Manphwa and Mopalechaung regions in Momauk Township on 1 July.

The Secretary-3 and party arrived at Theilon Village in Momauk Township at 11.15 am. Col Kyaw Oo Lwin report on reclamation of virgin land in- Bhamo District and the condition of land reclamation in; Mole Creek region, member of Bhamo District Peace and Development Council Police Major Lein Hoke on acres to be reclaimed in Shwegu, Momauk and Mansi Townships, cultivation of crops, targets set for cultivation of monsoon paddy in 2000-2001 and land utilization in the townships.

Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win also reported on the condition of Mole Creek region.

The Secretary-3 gave instruction on reclamation work. The Secretary-3 and party went to Bhamo at 12.25 pm. They were welcomed by military officers, departmental personnel and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association. The Secretary-3 met members of Bhamo District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, USDA members from Bhamo, Mansi, Momauk, Shwegu and Katha Townships and officials of Township War Veterans Organization at Taingyaminkhaung Hall at the regional battalion.

Then the Secretary-3 cordially greeted those present.  The Secretary-3 and party spent the night in Bhamo.

(7)  Boosting agricultural production in Kachin State and Sagaing Division coordinated

YANGON,3 July-Coordination meeting on boosting agricultural production in Kachin State and Sagaing Division was held at Kaungton Yeiktha in regional battalion in Bhamo Township yesterday, attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.

The Secretary-3 cordially greeted those present. The Secretary-3 and party spent the night in Bhamo.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Minister U Aung Phone reported on sending technicians and experts to Kachin State and f Sagaing Division and assistance to be provided by the ministries concerned.  The Secretary-3 took part in the discussions.

The Secretary-3 and party left Bhamo by Tatmadaw flight and arrived at Mandalay. They were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, military officers and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association. They arrived back to Yangon in the evening.



(8) Work coordinated to renovate Kaunghmulon  Pagoda in Machanbaw Township, Kachin State

YANGON, 3 July -A coordination meeting on all-round renovation of Kaunghmulon Pagoda in Machanbaw Township, Putao District, Kachin State, was held in the meeting hall of Northern Command in Myitkyina on 30 June morning.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint addressed the meeting. The Secretary 3 discussed renovation of Kaunghmulon Pagoda in Machanbaw Township, assistance to be provided by the Government the long-tern upkeep of the pagoda and arrangements for mobilizing engineers and skilled workers. Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win reported on arrangements for all-round renovation of the pagoda, cash donated to the pagoda fund and requirements.

Professor of Yangon Technological University Dr Hla Than reported on the de- sign of the pagoda, construction of the retaining wall and requirements of construction materials, and Chairman of Putao District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Myo on availability of sand, bricks and stones for the construction of the pagoda and progress of work.

Then, Secretary-3 Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint attended to the requirements.



(9) Myanmar Women's Day observed in Yangon

YANGON, 3 July -Myanmar Women's Day for Year 2000 was observed at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning.

It was attended by the ministers, the deputy ministers, the deputy Attorney General, the Vice-Mayor, members of the panel of patrons of Myanma Women's Sports Federation, directors general and managing directors, members of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, members of working groups, delegates of non-governmental organizations and guests.

Chairman of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa said that out of a population of 47.26 million in Myanmar, 23.80 million are women, thereby making up 50.3 per cent of the population; it is an enormous strength; Myanmar women has, since time immemorial, been on an equal footing with men in terms of law, culture and traditions. After the Ceremony, minister, deputy ministers and guests views the photo exhibition viewed the Years 20000 Myanmar Women's Day in the Reception Hall of international Business Center. Then,  Chairman of MNCWA Minister Maj- Gen Sein Htwa and members together with prize winners had documentary photo taken.

As the government has paid regard to the mass of Myanmar women, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs was set up on I July 1996 with a view to extensively implementing the affairs covered by Beijing Declaration of the With World Women's Conference; the committee has been working for four years.

(10) Minister inspects control tower construction project

YANGON, 3 July-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director-General U Win Maung of Department for Civil Aviation, Managing Director U Tin Hlaing Hmi of Myanma Airways and officials, inspected offices under construction, installation of modern communication devices, sitting rooms, bedrooms, getting weather reports and control of aircraft at the control tower of Yangon International Airport this morning  and left instructions. Then, the minister inspected the runway, the apron, landing and take off of aircraft, work of greening of the airport environs and left there in the afternoon.



(11) Minister gives instructions on improvement of Myanmar sports standard
 
YANGON, 3 July- Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint met with officials of Kachin State, district and township departments, members of Township Sports and Physical Education Committee, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association teachers and students in the meeting hall of Waingmaw Township Peace and Development Council in Kachin State yesterday morning.

The minister said that efforts are being made for the progress of Myanmar sports in accord with the guidance of leaders of the State. Then, the minister inspected the sports ground in Waingmaw Township and gave instructions on maintenance of the sports ground and the holding of sports competitions.

Afterwards, the minister and party attended the ceremony of presenting sports equipment to students of Sports and Education Combined Training School in Bhamo in Awaiya  Sports Hall, Bhamo, this morning. The minister gave instructions on finding ways and means to turn out outstanding athletes in Kachin State.

Then, the minister presented 12 kinds of sports equipment worth K 155,510 for 55 trainees. Township Education Officer U Aung Kyin accepted sports equipment and spoke words of thanks. Next, the  minister inspected the sports ground in Bhamo township and gave instructions on maintenance of the sports ground.

To improve the standard of Myanmar sports, sports and education combined training schools are being opened in states and divisions; altogether 282 students in four townships, Kachin State, are being trained in seven sports events 17 kinds of sports equipment worth K 765,480 were provided.



(12) Illegal drug possessors get ten and eleven years
 
YANGON, 3 July-Members of Anti-drug Squad (Yangon Division) searched suspect Aung Kyi Myint (a) Aung Lwin Oo, 29, of Ward 7, Thakayta Township, at the corner of Pansodan Street and Strand Road, Kyauktada Township, at 1.15 pm on 12 January 1999 and found 0.272 grams of heroin on him.

Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

The Yangon West District Court handed down ten years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on her on 26 May 2000.

Similarly, members of Tachilek Township Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Sai Win, 31, of Tachilek Township at 5.50 pm on 10 April 1998 and found 1,755 stimulant tablets in his cupboard.

Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Tachilek District Court handed down eleven years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on 11 March 1999 on him.

(13)Voters of Shwebo Township unanimously petition for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 3 July-Voters from Shwebo Township Constituencies No I and No 2, Sagaing Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at eight rallies in the township on 21 May. Over 14,000 people rallied in Myoma Region. On behalf of attendees, a representative expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petition for dissolving it. representative, on behalf of attendance's presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multi party Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Kyaw (a) U Ta. Similarly, S,500 people rallied in Taganan Village.

On behalf of attendance's, a representative expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives presented petitioned signed by the people to member of the Election Sub-commission Daw Khin Toe Myint. Likewise, 13,145 people rallied in Kyaukmyaung Village.

On behalf of attendance's a representative ex-pressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of the Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Win.

A similar rally was attended by 10,800 people in Seikkhon Village.

On behalf of attendance's, a representative expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives, on behalf of Villagetract presented petitions signed by the people to member of the Election Subcommission U Win Maung. Altogether 12,000 people rallied In Payan Region.

A similar rallied was attended by 8,567 people in Palaing Village.  The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes.

There are 151,492  eligible voters, in Shwebo Township Constituencies No 1 and No 2. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 140,418 people or 92.69 per cent.



(14) 11 members resign from Hlinethaya Township NLD of own accord
 
YANGON, 3 July-Eleven members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Hlinethaya Township, Yangon Division.
Eleven members of Hlinethaya Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 14 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
