(1) Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of literati and delegates to Central Body Meeting of MWJA

YANGON 1 July-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of members of the Central Body who attended the Central Body Meeting of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and literati and delegates at. Pyidaungsu Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds this evening.

T he Secretary-1 arrived at Pyidaungsu Hall and cordially greeted CEC members, members of the Central Body and the literati. Secretary of CEC of MWJA Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun (Hla Tun Twantay) read the agenda. The Secretary-l said he had met literati at the opening of the Central Body Meeting of MWJA and expressed his pleasure for meeting them in every two years.

He believed that litterati had-discussed resolutions and future programmes that would bring about the interest of the State and the people. Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) of MWJA spoke words of thanks.

The Secretary-l hosted dinner in honour of members of the Central Body of MWJA, litterati and delegates. Before and after dinner, artistes entertained the guests with the accompaniment of Myanma Athan music band.


(2) Secretary-l attends opening ceremony of Traditional Medicine Hospital in Pyay

YANGON, 1 July-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft this morning and arrived at Toungoo, Bago Division, at 8.45 am today.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party proceeded to construction site of a two-storey annex in the compound of Toungoo People s Hospital. Managing Director of Myannaingmyint Co reported to the Secretary-l on progress of construction work of two-storey annex, Medical Superintendent Dr M Janaw on arrangements for medical treatment. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye presented reports on arrangements for upgrading the hospital to 200-bed facility and construction of buildings.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended to their needs and inspected construction of new building. The Secretary-1 and party went to construction site of Thathana Beik-mandaw in Toungoo. Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and Planning Manager of AyonOo Construction Co Ltd U Myint Oo reported to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt on construction of Thathana Beik-mandaw. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected construction site of Thathana Beik-mandaw.

The Secretary-1 and party planted trees on the premises of Thathana Beikmandaw. Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party went to construction site of Khabaung bridge project. At the briefing hall, Senior Engineer U Han Soe explained about the bridge, and finishing touches. Secretary-l Lt-Gen-Khin Nyunt fulfilled the requirements.

Khabaung bridge will link Toungoo and Ottwin Townships, Bago Division. The Secretary-l and party arrived at Pyay at 1.30 pm today. Then, the Secretary- l and party inspected Pyu traditional dances.

Afterwards, the opening ceremony of Traditional Medicine Hospital (l6 bed) of Traditional Medicine Department was held at the hospital in Pyay at 2.15 pm today. Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council l then Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and pressed the button to unveil the signboard of hospital. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally opened the signboard of the Hospital.

Then, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Chairman of Bago Division (Western Branch) Peace and Development Council Col Phone Swe formally opened the hospital. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the hospital.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party also inspected Basic Education Primary School in Letkhokpin Village, Pyay Township and attended to their needs. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived back here in the evening.


(3) Secretary-2 attends eighth annual meeting of Myanmar Citizens Bank

YANGON, 1 July-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the eighth annual meeting of Myanmar Citizens Bank Ltd at the Yuzana Garden Hotel

The Secretary-2 said that I Myanmar Citizens Bank is the first ever commercial bank opened in 1992 as it has provided financial services for about eight years, it has gained experience to some extent.  According to the report of the board of directors, the bank has extended a total loan of over 1.4 billion up to the end of the 1999-2000 fiscal year and 25 per cent of profits have been distributed to shareholders for four years   in succession so, it is gratifying to note, that the bank is making progress.

In conclusion, the Secretary-2 urged all to extend banking services year after year and to effectively contribute towards the development of the wards production sector and the trade sector. Then, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made a speech. Afterward, the meeting continued. Chairman of MCB U Hla Tin made a speech. Certified Public Accountant and Consultant U Hla Tun reopened on the audit work and the condition of banking services. Next, the report of the board of directors and the annual statement were approved, the audit report submitted, the distribution of dividends announced, the B shareholders chosen and the members of the audit committee selected. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Chairman U Hla Tin.

(4) Secretary-2 attends opening ceremony of Pinlonhtaikht San-ein Condominium and Blazon Shopping Center

YANGON, 1 July- Opening ceremony of Pinlonhtaikhta San-ein Condominium and Blazon Shopping Centre was held at the centre at the corner of U Wisara Road and Chindwin Street in Kamayut Township at R 15 am today. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Managing Director of Pinlonhtaikhta Co Ltd Daw Hla Myint and Managing Director of Creation (Myanmar) Co Ltd Daw Myint Myint Win formally opened the Pinlonhtaikhta San-ein and Blazon Shopping Centre.

Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected Blazon Shopping Centre which will be kept open from 9 am to 9 pm daily.


(5) International Day of Co-operatives observed

YANGON, 1 July-A ceremony to mark the International Day of Co-operatives was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay  road this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development  council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao People s Democratic Republic Mr Le Bounkham, the charges d'affaires, resident representatives of UN agencies, departmental heads of Ministry of Cooperatives and ministries concerned, officials of Cooperative Cartel, Cooperative Syndicates and Cooperative Bank, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar Medical  Association, Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayone and Myanmar Music Asiayone.

First, Patron of the Leading Committee for Observing the International Day of Cooperatives Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San delivered an address. He said: Then, Director-General U Maung Hit of Cooperative Department read out the message from International Cooperatives Alliance (ICA).

Afterwards, the minister presented prizes to outstanding students of Central Cooperative College and Thanlyin Cooperative Degree College for 1999-2000 academic year and winners in the article competition to mark the International Day of Co-operatives. Later, the Secretary-2 and guests viewed the International Day of Co-operatives Photo Exhibition.


(6) Minister for Energy leaves for Vitnam

YANGON, July 1 A delegation led by Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi left here by air this morning for the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to attend the 1 8th Meeting of ASEAN Energy Ministers to be held on 3 July in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Deputy Minister U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung and officials of Ministry of Energy. The delegation members are Managing Director U Kyaw Shein of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise and Executive-Geologist U Tin Zaw Myint of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.

(7) MWJA delegates visit Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi Maha Bandoola Bridge in Dawbon

YANGON, 1 July-Altogether 148 delegates who attended the Central Body Meeting of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, accompanied by Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) and Central Executive Committee members, arrived at plantation and recreation centre (Uto) of Yangon City Development Committee in Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi Township this morning. Member of YCDC Chairman of Agriculture Work Committee Col Thaung Wai reported on the plantation and recreation centre, condition of agriculture and future tasks.

Altogether 6,045 acres are targeted to reclaim for summer paddy and 3,000 acres for monsoon paddy, fish breeding in 26 ponds and 30 acres of cultivation of vegetables are being undertaken in the region. Everyone can take rest playing golf, fishing and horse-riding. U Kyaw Nyunt (Kyaw Nyunt Yi) presented a souvenir to Col Thaung Wai. Next, the delegates visited rice mills of YCDC. They also visited rare books exhibition at the National Library. Chairman of Myanmar Library Association Deputy Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Khin Maung Tin presented K 3,000 to Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association. The study group also visited construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge linking Pazundaung and Dawbon Township.


(8) Drug possessor and trafficker get imprisonment

YANGON, 1 July-The Dawbon Township Court handed down a sentence of imprisonment on an illicit drug possessor on 12 May 2000.

Members of Yangon Division Anti-drug Squad stopped and searched one suspect San Lwin, 31, son of U Soe Myint, of No 53, Toeche Lane 1, Ward 3, Thakayta Township, at 12.3S pm on 3 October 1999 and found 0.0122 kilo of marijuana on him. He was tried under section 16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and- sentenced to seven years  imprisonment. Similarly, the Tachilek Township Court passed a sentence of imprisonment on a drug trafficker on 9 March 1999. Acting on information, members of Tachilek Township Police Force, at noon S March 1998, searched the house of Tin Aye Kyaw, 22, son of U Thein Han, of Wammaing Block 15, Ponehtun Ward, Tachilik Township, and found 0.0W7S kilo of heroin and 189 stimulant tablets in his possession. He was tried under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to 10 years  imprisonment.


(9) Drug traffickers sentenced

YANGON 1 July-Yangon Division Special Anti-drug Squad, searched suspect Lin Lin Htaik (a) Lin Lin, 20, son of U Hla Kyaing, No 28 (Second Floor), 23rd Street, Ward 7, Latha Township, on Sin-O-Dan Street, the same township, on 19 February 1999. The authorities arrested him along with 0.34 gram of heroin in his possession. He was tried under Section 15/16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Yangon West District Court and sentenced to five years  imprisonment under Section 15 and to ten years  imprisonment under Section 16 (CC) to serve separately on 24 May 2000.

Likewise, member of Namhkham Township Police Force, acting on information, searched a vehicle driven by La Yun, 28, son of U Yaw Naw, Panlon Village, Namhkam Township, on 29 November 1999.  The authorities arrested him together with o.5 kg of heroin in his possession. He was tried under Section 15/16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Nankhan Township Court and sentenced to three years  imprisonment under Section 15 and to five years  imprisonment under Section 16(C) to serve concurrently

(10) Voters of Sagaing Township Constituencies No 1 and No 2 unanimously petition for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 1 July-The people from Sagaing Township Constituencies No 1 and No 2, Sagaing Division, ex- pressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at eight rallies in the township on 20 May. A total of 7,800 people from 29 village-tracts rallied in Myoma Sports Ground in Myoma Station. On behalf of attendance s, representatives ex pressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Than Win.

A total of 2,305 people from six village-tracts rallied in Kywelu Village. On behalf of attendance s, representatives ex- pressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Oo.Similarly, 4,912 people from nine village-tracts rallied in Padu Station.

On behalf of attendees, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Nyunt Maung.

Altogether 3,850 people from six village-tracts rallied in Mingun Station. On behalf of attendees, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Aung Sein.

A total of 10,650 people from 15 village-tracts rallied in Hsadaung Station. On behalf of attendance s, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myo Tint.

A total of 7,500 people from 15 village-tracts rallied in Ohndaw Station. On behalf of attendance s, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Dr Daw Khin Pyone Yi. A total of 3,500 people from six village-tracts rallied in Ywathitgyi Station. On behalf of attendance s, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Sein May.

A total of 4,500 people from 10 village-tracts rallied in Nyaungbinwun Station. On behalf of attendance s, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. On behalf of attendance s, representatives of respective villages presented petitions signed by the people to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Maung Nyo.

The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes. There are 154,582 people, who can vote, in Sagaing Township Constituencies No 1 and 2. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is  146,543 people or 98.8 per cent.


(11) Seven Htigyaing Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 1 July-Seven members resigned from National League for Democracy of Htigyaing Township, Sagaing Division.

Seven members of Htigyaing Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Htigyaing Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
