(1) Chairman of MEC Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of multimedia teaching center at Basic  Education High School Danubyu

 YANGON, 24 June- Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and  Development Counci1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the deputy ministers officials of the  State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials, left here by helicopter this  morning and arrived at Pathein, Ayeyawady Division, at 8.30 am today. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  met with Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thura  Shwe Mann and departmental officials. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions to them on education,  health and development of the region.

 Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party together with Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann proceeded to  Danubyu Township, Maubin District. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended opening ceremony of  multimedia teaching centre at Basic Education High School in Danubyu, Maubin District, at 11 am. The  opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre took place at the Tayza Hall of Basic Education High  School in Danubyu. Headmaster U Kan Thein reported on opening of multimedia teaching. centre to turn out  technicians and intellectuals and installation of modern teaching aid. Chairman of School Board of  Trustees U Hla Myint thanked the officials for their efforts for emergence of multi-media teaching centre at the  school. Afterwards, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented a TV, VCR and cassette to Headmaster U Kan  Thein for the School. Then, Secretary-l Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt made a speech on the occasion.

 In conclusion, the Secretary-l exhorted teachers to strive for the development of well-rounded education and  emergence of the education system of international standard with the use of multimedia teaching aids,  urged students to strive to become stalwart sons and daughters by making the best use of their brilliant  intellectual power and called on people, teachers and students to cooperate in efforts to ensure peaceful  pursuit of education.

 After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party planted trees in Maha Bandoola Park in Danubyu, and  inspected preparations for construction of Maha Bandoola statue and museum on the precincts of  Taungpaw Kyaung in Danubyu. The Secretary- 1 and party paid respects and offered alms to Taungpaw  Kyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Nanasagara and members of the Sangha.

 Later, the Secretary- 1 and party proceeded to Nyaungdon, Maubin District by car. The Secretary- 1 attended  the opening ceremonies of multimedia teaching centers at No 1 and 2 Basic Education High Schools in  Nyaungdon. The Secretary-l and party inspected Electronic media (video system), printed media, computer  aided instruction, language lab, art studio, visual presenter, domestic and handicraft room and music room.

 The Secretary- l had photo taken together with members of school board of trustees, PTA members,  teachers and students. The Secretary-1 and party went to No 1 Basic Education High School. A ceremony to  open the multimedia teaching centre was held at the school. Headmaster U Philip Thaung Shwe and  Chairman of school board of trustees U Tin Oo formally opened the centre. The Secretary-l formally unveiled  the signboard of the centre. The Secretary- 1 inspected printed media, language lab, computer aided  instruction, computer application and E-mail, electronic media (video system) visual presenter, prayer hall,  art studio, domestic and handicraft room and music room. Township Education Officer U Thein Zan reported  on objectives of opening of the multimedia teaching centre. Chairman of school board of trustees U Tin Oo  reported on efforts for opening of the centre. The Secretary- 1 and party arrived back here in the evening.


(2) Secretary-2 attends opening of Mayanchaung Village Parahita Gayha

YANGON, 24 June-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by  member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and  Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen  Maung Maung Thein and Development Council Office and department and officials, went to Mayanchaung  Village in Hlegu Township this morning. On arrival there, they were welcomed by Commander of No 11 LID  Brig-Gen Myint Swe and officials. The Secretary-2 - and party attended the opening ceremony of  Mayanchaung  Village Parahita Gayha at the village.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than formally opened Parahita Gayha.Then, ceremony to hand over  Parahita Gayha to the Ministry of Social Wafer, Relief and Resettlement was held in the compound of  Parahita Gayha. Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Ni presented gifts to Assistant  Engineer U Win Maung, who took charge of building Parahita Gayha.

Dr San Lwin of Mayanchaung Station Hospital reported on health care and requirements, Headmaster of  Basic Education Middle School U Zaw Win on school buildings and Chairman of village Peace and  development Council U Thein Htute and Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Ni on  availability of motor roads, requirements and construction of Parahita Gayha.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein explained matters related to construction of Mayanchaung Station  Hospital and arrangements for total elimination of leprosy in year 2001 and for control of malaria which is  very common in Mayanchaung region.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung explained requirements of education staff and work  to be carried out. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 attended to the requirements of health, education, social affairs  and transport. Next, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Parahita Gayha.

Mayanchaung Village Parahita Gayha comprises one hostel for men and one hostel for women; it occupies a  plot 100 feet long and 18 feet wide. The messing hall, 50 feet by 18 feet, is divided into two rooms one for  men and one for women; bathrooms and toilets are built separately and a kitchen hall is also built; it was  constructed at a cost of K 3.8 million; the people from the village who are still suffering from leprosy will be  looked after at Parahita Gayha.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the buildings of Parahita Gayha and met doctors, nurses and health  staff at Mayanchaung Station Hospital. The Secretary-2 inspected wards and educative measures for  patients. The Secretary-2 inspected a site suitable for the new building of the school. He gave instructions on  repair after inspecting classrooms and houses for teachers.

The Secretary-2 inspected fish breeding farms and raising of pigs at No-1 Training Unit in Mingon. He also  inspected Mingon Village Basic Education High School and met Headmistress Daw Khin Cho San and  teachers.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-2 went to Yaytalabaung paddy cultivation farm of Ayeyawady Naval Region  Command in Yaytalabaung Village in Hlegu Township.

Ayeyawady Naval Region Command cultivated 50 acres of summer paddy in 1998-99 124.71 acres of  monsoon paddy in. 1999 and 154.38 acres of summer paddy in 2000.

Altogether 66 acres were ploughed and 18 acres were sowed for cultivation of monsoon paddy. Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo went to Yaytalabatung paddy cultivation farm undertaken by the Commander-in-Chief (Air)  where he was welcomed by Commander of Mingaladon Air Base Brig-Gen Thein Myint and officials.   Officials reported on ploughing with the use of power tillers for cultivation of monsoon paddy and building of  small embankment in the fields. General Staff Officer (Grade 1) (Air) Lt-Col Myint Saw reported on cultivation  of paddy and officials also took part in the discussions.

Local farmers reported on experience and requirements. The Secretary-2 gave instructions on construction  of roads and bridges.

Altogether 197.54 acres have been allotted to the Office of Commander-in-Chief Airs. The Office of  Commander-in-Chief (Air) cultivated 60 acres of summer paddy in 1998-99 and average per care yield is 58  baskets, 30 acres of monsoon paddy in 1999 and 100 acres of summer paddy in 1999-2000. The target of  monsoon paddy for 2000 is 150 acres and 40 acres have been cultivated so far.

(3) Daw Kyaing Kyaing participates in tree planting to hail Myanmar Women's Day

YANGON, 24 June-Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe this morning participated in tree  planting in the precincts of the eastern stairway of Shwedagon Pagoda in Bahan Township hailing Myanmar  Women's Day which falls on 3 July.

The ceremony was organized by Working Committee for Myanmar Women's Affairs. Present on the  occasion were Daw Mya Mya San, wife of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Dr Daw  Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,  member of Working Committee for Women's Affairs and Chairman of Work Committee for observance of  Myanmar Women's Day, Daw Khin Than Nwe the ministers, Vice member of Working Committee for  Myanmar Women's affairs and members, officials of the Ministry of Forest, division, district and township  level officials, members o f Yangon Division Women's Affairs Committee, members of Bahan, Lanmadaw  and Tamway. Township Women Affairs members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association,  members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association members of Red Cross and Fire Brigades and  members of: the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees. On arrival at the plot of land in eastern stairway  office Shwedagon Pagoda, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Daw Mya Mya San were welcomed by Chairman of Work  Committee for Observance of Myanmar Women's Day Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and officials.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Daw Mya Mya San, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Than Nwe and Daw Khin Cho Oo  planted trees. Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Work Committee for Observance of Myanmar  Women's Day Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and officials went to the Institute of Nursing Lanmadaw Township  and planted trees on the campus of the institute.

Committee members proceeded to Ear, Nose and Throat Special Hospital in Tamway Township and  planted trees and greeted those who planted trees. Altogether 700 trees were Planted 260 trees including  Lwmbini Ingyin (Pentacme suavis), star flower (Mimusops elengi), gangaw (Mesua ferrea) and mahogany in  the precincts of eastern stairway of the. Shwedagon Pagoda, 100 on the campus of the Institute of Nursing  and 340 in the Ear, Nose and Throat Special Hospital.


(4) Eligible voters of Okpo Township submit petitions expressing no confidence in NLD  representatives-elect U Tin Oo and U Tha Maung

 YANGON, 24 June-The eligible voters of Okpo Township Constituencies-l and 2, Bago Division, submitted  signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin Oo and U Tha Maung elected as Pyithu Hluttaw  Representatives of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from  Okpo Township Constituencies-l and 2 and no support for them and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies  in two venues held in Okpo Township on 13 May morning.

 A total of 15,000 local people of 3 wards and 27 village tracts rallied at Sports Ground of Basic Education  High School in Okpo Township. Merchant U Tin Min Lwin from Thetkechinkone Village, on behalf of the  voters, expressed no confidence in U Tin Oo of National League for Democracy, no support for him and  petitioned for dissolving NLD.

 Then, farmer U Tin Oo from Chaunggwa (G) Village, on behalf of the voters presented declarations  expressing no confidence in U Tin Oo, no support for him and petitioned for dissolving NLD signed by voters  to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission law officer U Thein Htay.  Altogether 25,000 local people of 3 wards and 27 village-tracts rallied in the sports ground of Ayemyathaya  Myothit. Farmer U Thein Zaw from Ownhne Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Tha  Maung of National League for Democracy, no support for him and petitioned for dissolving NLD. Then,  farmer U Aye Than from Ownhne Village, on behalf of the voters, presented declarations expressing no  confidence in U Tha Maung, no support for him and petitioned for dissolving NLD signed by voters to  member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Dr Kyaw Win.

 Out of 19,700 eligible voters of Okpo Township Constituency- 1, 10,166 or 51.60 per cent voted for U Tin Oo  of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. The number of people, who presented signed  petitions of no confidence in U Tin Oo and the petitions for dissolving NLD, totalled 27,153 or 137.82 per  cent.

 Out of 22,873 eligible voters of Okpo Township Constituency-2, 12,443 or 54.4 per cent voted for U Tha  Maung of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.

 The number of people, who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Tha Maung and the petitions  for dissolving NLD, totalled 29,779 or 130.19 per cent. Out of 87,857 eligible voters in Okpo Township  Constituencies-l and 2, the number of people, who presented signed the petitions for dissolving NLD,  totalled 56,932 or 64 per cent.

(5) Illegal drug possessor gets 5 years

YANGON, 24 June-The Aungmye Thazan Township Court handed down a sentence of five years   imprisonment on an illegal drug possessor on 25 February 1999.

On 22nd Street between 80th and 81th Streets; members of Aungmye Thazan Township Police Force  searched one suspect Aye Ko, 47, son of U Chit, of NanOoLwin Village, Patheingyi Township at 10.45 am on  5 August 1998 and seized 0.002 kg of heroin. He was tried under Section 16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to five years  imprisonment.


(6) 25.5 kgs of ephedrine powder seized in Nyaungshwe Township

YANGON, 24 June-Acting on information, a combined team comprising the local intelligence unit and  Myanmar Police Force searched the house of Ko Lar (a) Saya Lar, son of U San, of Hmawby Village,  Poun-ngu Village-tract, Nyaungshwe Township, Shan State (South) on 13 June 2000 and found 25.5 kgs of  ephedrine powder.

In further investigation, Myint Lwin, son of U San Nyar, of Phetnan Village, Taunglaylon Village-tract, Taunggyi  Township and Maung Oo (a) Aung Tun, son of U Nyo, of No 4/ 5, Yadana Street, Region 4, Danatheikdi Ward,  Shwenyaung, Taunggyi Township were then arrested. Action was taken against them under the Narcotic  Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(7) Minister receives UNESCO representative

YANGON, 24 June-Minister for Education U Than Aung received Representative of Director-General of  UNESCO based in Paris, France, Chief of Cultural Heritage Division Ms Sonia Ramzi, accompanied by  UNESCO Coordinator and Dr Daw Khin Mya Kyu, at his office yesterday afternoon. Also present at the call  were Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Rector of Institute of Education (Yangon) U  Han Tin and officials of the Ministry of Education.

(8) Stimulant tablets seized in Mongshu

YANGON, 24 June-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on  information, waiting at Palaung Village, Phaya Ngahsu Region, Lwesawnhtauk ward, Mongshu, Shan State  (South) stopped and searched two suspects Yan Shauk Khwi, son of U Yan Yit Paung and Kyaw Sein, son of  U Twun Yin Hsai on 4 June and found 979 stimulant tablets bearing the words  WY . On further  investigation, the team kept on waiting there and seized Ar Wai, son of U Chaung Hlan, of the same village,  together with 365 stimulant tablets bearing the words  WY . Action was taken against them under Narcotic  Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law


(9) 32 Myinmu Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 24 June-Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myinmu  Township, Sagaing Division. Thirty-two members of Myinmu Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own  accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General  Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 9 February 2000 as they no longer wished to  participate in party politics of NLD
