(1)  Secretary-1 tours Mandalay, Magway Divisions

YANGON,  21  June-Secretary-l  of the  State  Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt  and  party, accompanied by  member of  the State Peace  and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development  Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Chairman  of  Magway  Division  Peace  and  Development Council  Brig-Gen  Thein Zaw,  yesterday  left Bagan by helicopter for land  reclamation  project of Asia World Co Ltd in  Tebokan  region  in Salin  Township,  Magway Division.

The  Secretary-l  and party were welcomed by members of Division,  District and Township Peace and  Development Councils, departmental  personnel, members of the Union Solidarity  and Development Association, national entrepreneurs, Managing Director of Asia World Co Ltd U Tun  Myint  Naing  and officials.  Chairman  of  Magway Division Peace and Development  Council  Brig-Gen Thein Zaw reported on crops  cultivation  and  production  in Magway Division for 2000-2001,  fallow and virgin lands granted to national  entrepreneurs  for reclamation and cultivation of crops on reclaimed lands.

The Secretary-l said the government  permitted national entrepreneurs  to reclaim  fallow and virgin  lands for emergence of tens of thousands  of  farmlands  with the use of modern  cultivation  techniques and machinery in various parts of the country including Magway Division. The  Secretary-l  spoke of the  need  for  them to make efforts for  agricultural  development as well as their own interest and the State's through  various means and for departments concerned to provide assistance to them in accord with the government's objectives.

The Secretary-l and party  inspected  cotton and castor seeds of Asia World Co Ltd.  They then  inspected  crop plantations of the company.  The Secretary-l  and party went to the site  for  Ayeyawady  Bridge  (Magway)  and inspected the approach pier,  construction  of the main piers and axis of the bridge sought.  Project  Director of  Public  Works U Han Zaw  reported  on the  data  of projects and future tasks.

The Secretary-l then gave  instructions.  The Ayeyawady Bridge  (Magway) is being  built near  Mingala  Road in Magway and Kywethohmaung Village on Minbu bank.

The bridge is 8,989 feet long and 28 feet wide with two walk ways and it can withstand 60 ton loads

The  Secretary-l  and party  went to  Taungdwingyi  and reached there in the afternoon.

A ceremony to open multimedia  teaching centre was held at No 1 Basic  Education  High  School in  Taungdwingyi yesterday  afternoon,  with an address by  Chairman  of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l Khin Nyunt.

The  Secretary-l  formally  unveiled the  signboard and opened the stone plaque.

The  Secretary-l  and party  inspected  computer  skill room, audio  room,  computer  aided  instruction  room, broadcasting and control room visual room, prayer hall, study room, art room and music rooms.

The Secretary-l  inspected  demonstration  skill of the students.  Headmaster  U  Thaung Nyunt reported  on efforts  for  opening  of  multimedia classroom for all-round  development  of the  students in accord with the education promotion programmes.

Chairman  of  School  Board  of  Trustees  U  Hla  Shwe reported  on providing assistance for all-round development of the students.  The Secretary-l presented a video tape and cassette  tapes to Headmaster U Thaung Nyunt.  The Secretary-l signed in the record book.

The  Secretary-l  said  the  government  laid  down the education  promotion  programmes  in  accord  with  the education  policy  for  all-round  development  of  the students,  uplifting  the national  education  level to meet  the  international  standard  and for  harmonious progress of the basic  education  and higher  education sectors by applying modern teaching aids and methods.

At the historic  Aungmyin Zeya Pagoda in  Taungdwingyi, the  Secretary-l 1ooked  into  the requirements  to renovate  the stupa  Brig-Gen  Thein Zaw and  officials reported  to the  Secretary-l  on  the  history  of the pagoda and  renovation of the pagoda in accord with the original design.

The Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to the pagoda. Secretary-l  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint  accepted  the donations.  Sarira  relics  were enshrined in the 192-foot high stupa which was built in the ninth  century.  As the  1170-year  old  pagoda was deteriorating, it  is  being renovated under  the supervision of Brig-Gen Thein Zaw.

Back in Bagan,  the  Secretary-l  and  party  inspected ancient  bronze ware  excavated at the collapsed ancient edifice No 2391  north-east of Htilominlo  Pagoda on 16 June 2000 and ancient Buddha images,  bronze  religious inscriptions and ivory inscriptions,  donated by Daw Nu Nu Tin and son Ko Thet  Hlaing  of  NyaungU,  at  Bagan Archaeological  Museum.  U Aung  Kyaing of  Archaeology Department  reported on murals and glaze  paintings  of Bagan era.

After giving suggestions, the Secretary-l looked around e museum. At the lacquer ware Institute, the Secretary-l and  party inspected  the newly-built Convention  Hall, various stages in producing lacquer  ware  and works of the  students.  This morning, the Secretary-l and  party attended opening  of multimedia  teaching  centres  of Bagan  BEHS and Bagan BEMS  in  NyaungU  Township.  Secretary-l  Lt-Gen  Khin Nyunt  unveiled  the plaque  marking the opening of the multimedia teaching centre of the high school.

Headmistress  Daw Khin Khin Aye and  Chairman of School Board of  Trustees U Thein  Htay  formally  opened  the centre.

The Secretary-l and party inspected  different sections of  the centre.  Speaking on  the occasion, the Secretary-l  said Bagan  region is famous  all over the world for its ancient  pagodas  and  cultural  heritage which were built since the time of King  Anawratha, the founder of the First Myanmar  Empire.  At Thahtay Lake, Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt  and  party  observed  Progress  in re-digging  the lake which is being  re-dug and dredged by Office  of  Strategic  Studies  and  Directorate  of Defence  Service  Intelligence  with he counsel  of the Secretary-l.

The  Secretary-l  and party  hen  attended  opening  of multimedia  teaching  centre  at  the  basic  education middle school  interest Phwa Saw Village, Bagan NyaungU Township.  Secretary-l  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  unveiled the plaque marking the opening of the  multimedia  teaching centre of the school.

Headmaster U Aung Than Win and Chairman of School Board of  Trustees U Khin Maung  Maung  formally  opened  the centre.  The Secretary-l and  party visited the different sections of the centre.

At Aungmye Bawdiyeiktha Alodawpyi Monastery in NyaungU, the  Secretary-l  and party paid  obeisance to Sayadaws led by Alodawpyi Sayadaw Maha Gandavacaka  Pandita Maha Saddhamma  Jotikadhaja  Bhaddanta  Ariyavamsa They also presented offertories to Sayadaws.  The Secretary-l and party arrived back here from NyaungU in the  afternoon.

(2) Secretary-2 inspects Aungzeya Bridge Project

YANGON,  21  June-Secretary-2  of the  State  Peace and Development  Council  Lt- Gen Tin  Oo,  accompanied  by officials  of the State Peace and  Development  Council Office,  inspected Aungzeya  Bridge  Project  linking Insein  and  Hlinethaya Townships this afternoon. Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at the project  site on the Hlinethaya bank at 2.10 pm.  Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin  Oo  inspected  Aungzeya  Bridge  Project  site  on Hlinethaya bank.

Secretary-2  Lt  Gen  Tin  Oo  gave instructions to officials  on  timely  completion  of the  project  and worksite  safety.  Then,  Secretary-2  Lt-  Gen  Tin Oo inspected  a four-  lane road  linking  Hlinethaya  and Aungzeya Bridge being  constructed by YCDC,  plantation of trees on both sides of the road and  construction of a circle and a park at the junction of Bayintnaung Road and Nyaungdon Road.

Joint-Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win conducted Secretary-2 Lt-Gen  Win Oo round the  project.  Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended to their  needs.  The  Secretary-2  and party also inspected  Aungzeya  Bridge  Project site on Insein Bank.  Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo fulfilled  the requirements.

The  Secretary-2  urged all  departmental  officials to strive for timely completion of the bridge  constructed by  Myanmar engineers, greening  of  its  environs, completion  of  landscaping  and development  of  its environs and left there.

Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party  inspected  Blazon Shopping Centre on U Wisara Road on his way to Aungzeya Bridge project and were welcomed by owner U Han Kyi and staff.

Oo and party  inspected  preparations  for  opening  of five-storey Blazon  Shopping Centre.  The  shopping centre will open soon.


(3) Seminar on  Precious  Stone  Heat  Treatment  and  Precision Fine Casting for Platinum and Titanium held

YANGON,  21  June-  Seminar  on  Precious Stone  Heat Treatment and Precision Fine Casting for Platinum, Gold and  Titanium sponsored by  Myanmar International Economic  Coordination  Committee  and Linn High  Therm Gmbh was held at Innya Late Hotel at 9.30 am today.

Present  on the  occasion  were  Minister  at the State Peace  and  Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen  Abel, Deputy  Minister for National  Planning and Economic  Development  Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Ambassador of Germany Dr Marius Haas, officials of ministries, and guests.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel  made  an  opening speech. Ambassador  of  Germany  Dr  Marius  Haas and  Resident Representative  of  OAV  Managing Director  Mr  Frank Schmidt  extended  greetings.  Managing  Director  Linn High Therm Gmbh Mr Horst Linn explained  precious stone heat  treatment.  The seminar  ended after the question and answer session.


(4) Minister fixes gold bolts at Maha Bandoo Bridge

YANGON,  21 June-A  ceremony  to fix gold  bolts at the last  frame of Maha  Bandoola  Bridge  built by  Alblic Works of  Ministry  of  Construction  was  held at the bridge in  Pazundaung township this  morning.  At the auspicious time, Minister for Construction  Maj-Gen Saw Tun  fixed  the gold  bolts at the  last  frame  of the bridge and sprinkled scented water on the bolts.  Then, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun performed the ritual of golden and silver showers.

(5) Myanmar delegation leaves for PRC

YANGON,  21  June-At  the  invitation  of  Ministry  of Culture  of the  People's  Republic  of  China, a three member Myanmar cultural  delegation led by Minister for Culture  U Win Sein  left for PRC by air this  morning. The delegation comprises Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U  Myint Thein Swe  and Director-General  of Department of  Archaeology U Nyunt Han.


(6) Minister meets guests from Germany and Singapore

YANGON, 21 June-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Consultant  Mr  Kurt  Nass  of Commercial and Industrial  Consulting, Germany and party at his office on Strand Road at 1 pm today.  Similarly, the minister met Managing  Director Mr Wolfgang Perner of Thilawa Cement and Building Materials Ltd and party at 3 pm today.

Also present at the calls were Director-General U Nyunt Aye of Directorate of Trade,  Director-General  Col Nay Win of Border Trade Department, Managing Director U Min Hla Aung of Myanma  Agricultural  Produce  Trading  and officials.


(7) National  Commission  for  Environmental  Affairs (NCEA) meets

YANGON, 21 June-The  National  Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA)  held  its  Thirteenth Session at Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.

Present were  Chairman of the National  Commission  for Environmental  Affairs and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win  Aung,  members  of the  Commission,  guests  and officials of the Office of

National Commission for Environmental  Affairs. Minister  for Foreign  Affairs U Win Aung made a speech on the  occasion.  The  meeting  ended with  concluding remarks by Minister U Win Aung.


(8)  Minister  for  Rail  Transportation inspects factory, railroads and bridges

YANGON, 21 June- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by responsible  officials,  inspected Myitnge  Carriage  Repair  Factory  and gave  necessary instructions on 16 June.  The minister  looked into the maintenance of railroad and bridges between Kanthit and Zeebya in Pakokku Township on 18 June.

The minister  inspected the erosion of Natchaung Bridge on Pindale Road in Wundwin Township and assigned repair tasks to  Myanma  Railways  and  Central  Institute  of Transport  and  Communications.  Then, the minister and party proceeded to  Shwethahlyaung  Dam  constructed by Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation for having water for agriculture and drinking in arid zone.  On 20 June, the  minister  gave instructions  on  maintenance  of railroad and bridges between Aunglan and Pyay.

(9)  Preparatory Meeting  for Myanmar-Thailand Inter-country Cooperation in Disease Control begins

YANGON, 21 June-The  opening  ceremony  of  Preparatory Meeting for Myanmar-Thailand  Intercountry  Cooperation in Disease Control was held at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning,  attended by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Also present on the occasion  were Deputy  Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, directors  general, deputy directors- general directors, planning managers of the Ministry of Health,  departmental  officials,  Dr  Supachai Kunaratanapruk  from Thailand, Dr Kamini Mendis of WHO, Geneva,  officials,  Deputy Director of South East Asia Director's  Office (WHO) Dr Samlee  Plianbangchang  and party,  resident  representatives  of WHO  in  Myanmar. Thailand

and Indonesia,  district  doctors from border region of Myanmar  and  Thailand  and officials.  Minister  for Health  Maj-Gen Ket Sein made a speech on the occasion. Then, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Dr Supachai Kunaratanapruk  from Thiland and party and officials of WHO (Geneva) and South East Asia  Director's  Office ( WHO  )  took  part  in  the discussion.  The  meeting continues tomorrow.


(10) Minister inspects Satellite Station

YANGON, 21 June - Minister  for  Communications,  Posts and  Telegraphs  Brig-Gen Win Tin inspected the factory producing concrete  telephone posts of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications in  Toegyaunggale this  morning. Officials reported  to  the  minister  on  production process, raw materials and production cost.

Staff should strive to manufacture quality products and sell them at reasonable  prices, stressed the minister. At Satellite  Station in  Toegyaunggale,  the  minister inspected the towers and antennas for local and foreign calls of CDMA telephone system and GSM cellular system. Officials  explained  facts about the station  with the help of maps and  charts.  The  minister  spoke  of the need to sink  tube-wells  and to set up  livestock  and agricultural farms.


(11) Deputy Minister receives SRV delegation

YANGON, 21 June-A six-member study delegation led by Mr Luong Cao Khai of  Economic  Inspection  Department  of State  Inspection  Office  of  Socialist Republic  of Vietnam arrived here yesterday evening.

They were  welcomed at the airport by  Director-General of Bureau of  Special  Investigation  U Than  Myint and officials and  officials of SRV Embassy  staff.  Deputy Minister for Home  Affairs  Brig-Gen  Thura Myint Maung received the SRV delegation at his office this morning.

Also  present  at the  call  were  Director-General  of Myanmar  Police  Force  Police  Col Soe  Win,  Director General of Bureau of Special Investigation U Than Myint and  officials,  officials  of SRV Embassy  and Head of Office of Ministry of Home Affairs U Nyan Lin.  The SRV delegation met officials of  Bureau  of Special Investigation at the meeting hall of office of Director General of Myanmar  Police  Force of  Ministry  of Home Affairs this afternoon.  They discussed matters pertaining to investigation.

In  the  evening,  Deputy  Minister  for  Home  Affairs Brig-Gen  Thura Myint Maung hosted  dinner in honour of the SRV delegation at the Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel.

(12) Illegal drug possessor gets 5 years

YANGON, 21 June-The Muse  Township  Court handed down a sentence of five years' imprisonment on an illegal drug possessor on  18  February 1999.  Members  of  Muse Township Myanmar Police Force searched suspect one Than Naing, 20, son of U Mansein, of Manwein  Village,  Muse Township,  at 2.30  pm, on 8  January  1999  and  found 0.00001  kg of  heroin  on  him.  He  was  tried  under Section  16 (C)  of  Narcotic  Drugs  and  Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to five years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C).


(13) 11 Hmawby  Township  NLD  members  resign of own  accord

YANGON,  21  June-Eleven members  resigned  from  the National  League  for  Democracy  of  Hmawby  Township, Yangon  Division.  Eleven  members  of Hmawby  Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending  letters  of  resignation  to  Hamwby  Township Multiparty  Democracy  General Election  Sub-commission and the  party  concerned  on 23 May  2000  as  they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.
