(1) Secretary-1 meets students of University for  Development of National Races

YANGON,  20  June-Secretary-l  of the  State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with students of  University  for  Development  of National  Races in Ywathitgyi, Sagaing Township, yesterday.

On  arrival  at the  university  at 1.30 pm, they  were welcomed by Chairman  of Civil  Service  Selection  and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt,  Commander of No 33 Light Infantry  Division  Col Khin  Zaw,  local  authorities, departmental  personnel,  Rector  of UDNR  Col  Zaw Min Thein, faculty members and  students.  Dr  Than Nyunt and Col Zaw Min Thein reported  facts about the  university and officials on plans to build the convocation hall.

After giving suggestions Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met  students  of UDNR.  He said the UDNR  was  founded with the noble aims to  strengthen  the Union spirit in the  national  races of the Union while  residing  in a friendly  atmosphere  and  pursuing  education  at  the University; to preserve and understand  the culture and good l traditions  of the national  races of the Union; to promote the spirit of desiring  to serve in order to rise the standard of living of the  national  races; to raise the  quality  of  leadership  and  efficiency  in carrying out the development of the national  races; to infuse the spirit of desiring to conduct  research with a view to achieving  success in the  development of the national races; to produce good  educational  personnel ties, and who are of good moral  character; and to keep alive and promote the spirit of  desiring  to  preserve the  causes  of non-disintegration of  the Union, non-disintegration  of national solidarity and ensuring the perpetuity of the sovereignty of the State.

At  present  the  aim to  bring  out  good  educational personnel has been promoted as  arrangements  are under way  to  enable  the  students  of  the  university  to continue to pursue education at vocational universities such  as Institute of  Medicine  or Technological Universities to  also produce intellectuals and intelligentsia.

In conclusion, the  Secretary-1  urged them to try hard in the studies by uplifting the spirit to unitedly work for the emergence of a peaceful,  tranquil,  modern and developed nation and  perpetuation  and progress of the Union.

The Secretary-  1 and party then inspected site to build the convocation hall and projected media room, computer room, audio visual media room, language lab, studio and lecture halls of the university.


(2)  Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony  of  multimedia teaching centre in Kyaukse Township

YANGON, 20 June -  Secretary-l  of the State  Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt  and  party, accompanied by  member of  the State Peace  and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and  Development  Council  Commander  Maj-Gen Ye Myint, yesterday went  to  Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik  in Amarapura Township.

The  Secretary- 1 and party paid respects to members of the Sangha led by member of Central  Working  Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha  Pandita  Bhaddanta Indalabhivamsa and presented offertories to them.

The Secretary-l  and party  inspected  construction  of three-storey  building  in the  precincts  of the  Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik and fulfilled the requirements.

The  Secretary-1  and party left " Mandalay for Kyaukse Township by  helicopter  A ceremony to open  multimedia teaching  centre was held at No I Basic  Education High School in Kyaukse  Township at 8.50 am, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee  Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.  Headmaster  U Tin Oo and-  Chairman  of  School Board of Trustees U Maung Maung Win formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

Next, the Secretary-l  formally  opened stone plaque of the  centre.  The Secretary-1 and  party observed printing media room, audio visual room, computer  skill room, computer  instruction room, audio room, laboratory,  domestic  science  room,  art  studio  and prayer hall and  inspected  demonstration  skill of the students.

Headmaster  U Tin Oo reported on  teaching  of advanced technology  in  accord  with  the  education  promotion programmes  and  arrangements  for  turning  out  human resources development  after  opening  of  multimedia teaching centre.

Chairman of School  Board of Trustees U Maung Maung Win also reported on providing assistance to development of the school and  uplift of  education  standards  of the students  including  opening  of  multimedia teaching center.  The Secretary-l  presented  teaching aid video tapes and cassette tapes to Headmaster U Tin Oo.

The Secretary-1 said Kyaukse BEHS No 1 is a school with fine  traditions  that  produced  Head of State  Senior General Than Shwe, the  commanders,  the  ministers who are discharging duties of the State.

The Secretary-1  thanked local  authorities  and people End School Board of Trustees.

The Secretary-1  and party had photo taken with members of School Board of Trustees,  members of PTA,  teachers and students.

 The  Secretary-1  and party  went to  Kyaukse  Township Hospital where  they  were; welcomed by Medical Superintendent Dr Maung Maung and doctors.

The Secretary-1 and party  inspected  wards,  operation theatres and warehouse for  medicine.  The  Secretary-1 and party  went to the site of Shwe  Zedi  Home for the Aged in Kyaukse  Township  where  Commander  Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials  gave  supplementary  reports.  The Secretary-l gave instructions and inspected scale model of the Home.

A ceremony to open the multimedia  teaching  centre was held at Basic Education High School in Myinmu  Township at 11.40 am, with an address  by  Chairman  of  Myanmar Education Committee  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt.  Next,  the Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard the centre.

Headmaster  U Tin Myint and  Chairman  of School and of Trustees  U Nyan Yin  formally  opened  the  multimedia teaching centre.

The  Secretary-l  and party  observed  computer  skills room, control room  (monitor),  closed  circuit  (video section),  visual room  (mutual  system  printed  media (reading corner),  domestic science room and art studio and music room.

He also inspected  demonstration skill of the students. The Secretary-l  presented teaching aid video tapes and cassette  tapes to Headmaster U Tin Myint.  Chairman of School  Board of Trustees U Nyan Yin also  reported  on providing assistance for opening of multimedia teaching centre.  The  Secretary-l  signed in the  record  book. The  Secretary-1  said Myinmu  region is a region where not only Myawady Mingyi U Sa but also patriotic  leader would be king Maung Thant was born.

Outstanding and famous persons emerged in the region in successive  periods.  He  spoke  of the  need  to  make efforts for producing  intellectuals and intelligentsia and upholding good traditions.


(3) Fish  breeding  in  Shwemayin  region in  Twantay Township coordinated 

YANGON, 20 June-A coordination meeting on fish breeding in  Shwemayin  region in Twantay  Township  was held at Yangon  Division Peace and  Development  Council Office this evening, with an ad- dress by  Secretary-2  of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.  The  Secretary-2  said  only  when  land and  marine re sources are fully and efficiently exploited, will there be economic  progress.  Therefore,  the  government  is endeavouring for development of  agriculture, industrial and fish and meat sectors, he said.

In agricultural sector, extended  cultivation of paddy, cotton, sugarcane  and  beans  and  pulses  is  being undertaken  and  encouragement  is also being  given to cultivating  of  kitchen  crops,  he  added.  Officials reported  on  remaining  acres  for  fish  breeding  in Shwemayin region and future tasks.

The  meeting  ended with the  concluding  remark by the Secretary-2.


(4) Means  sought to extend  prawn  farming in states and division

YANGON, 20 June -Committee to Extend Prawn Breeding and Production held a meeting with its  subordinate  bodies in states and  divisions  at the  Fisheries  Department this  afternoon,  addressed by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt -Gen Tin Oo

Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo said arrangements  should be made to  conduct  conventional  as well  as  scientific prawn breeding in Yangon Division, Ayeyawady  Division, Bago Division,  Rakhine,  State, Kayin State, Mon State and Taninthayi Division which have favourable conditions to set up prawn farms.  States and divisions should draw a three year  project  for  development  of prawn  farming  based on  directives  laid  down by the central.  The meeting ended with concluding  remarks by the Secretary-2.


(5)  Minister  for  Foreign  Affairs  signs  Book  of Condolences for late Her Majesty Empress Dowager Nagako 

YANGON, 20 June-Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung signed the Book of Condolences  at the Embassy of Japan at 10 am today, in memory of the late Her  Majesty  the Empress Dowager  Nagako, the widow of Emperor  Hirohito and mother of His Majesty Emperor Akihito of Japan.


(6) Minister meets Deputy Regional Director of WHO

YANGON,  21 June-Minister  for Health  Maj- Gen Ket Sein met Deputy Regional  Director Dr Samlee  Plianbangchang of office of  Regional  director  of South East Asia of World Health Organization at the meeting hall of Trader Hotel at 6.30 pm today.  Also  present at the call were Resident  Representative  of WHO Dr Agustino  Borra and officials of the ministry.

Minister receives Ambassador of ROK

YANGON, 20  June-Minister  for Energy  Brig-Gen Lun Thi received  Ambassador  of the Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung Gum at his office this  morning.  Also  present at the call were Deputy  Ministers U Tin Tun and  Brig-Gen Thein Aung and  Director-General  U Soe Myint of Energy Planning Department.


(7) Minister meets Ambassador of Sri Lanka

YANGON, 20 June-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Ambassador of Sri Lanka Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa at his office at 10 am today.


(8) National Legal Training Workshop held

YANGON, 20 June- In accordance  with  Strengthening  of Judicial and  Prosecutorial  Drug  Control  Capacity in East Asia  programme,  a ceremony to open the  National Legal Training Workshop, sponsored by Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and UNDCP, was held at the Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road this morning.

Secretary of CCDAC director  General of Myanmar  Police Force Maj- Gen Soe Win  Acting Resident Representative of UNDCP Mr  Guillaume  Le  Hegarat  and UNDCP  Project Manager Dr Gerassimos Fourlanos gave speeches.

Officials  of CCDAC,  Ministry of Defence,  the Supreme Court,  the  Attorney-General's Office  MPF  and  the Customs  Department  are attending  the workshop  which will be held up to 23 June.


(9 )  Prize  presented  to  Myanmar  Women's  Sports Federation

YANGON,  20  June-A ceremony  to  present  Sport  and Universality Trophy  for  year  2000 presented by International  Olympic  Committee  to  Myanmar  Women's Sports  Federation was held at Padamya Hall of National Stadium  I at 10 am  today,  attended  by  Chairman  of Myanmar Olympic Committee  Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura. Aye  Myint and  members  of MOC, Head of  Leading Patrons  of MWSF Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe  and  members  of leading patrons,  Director-General  Col Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education  Department,  Chairperson Professor  Daw  May  May  Yee  of  MWSF  and  executive members.

Chairman of MOC Minister for Sports  Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint  delivered a speech and  presented  the Sport and Universality Trophy of International  Olympic Committee to Head of Leading Patrons Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe.

Then, Chairperson Professor Daw May May Yee spoke words of  thanks.  After  that,  the  athletes demonstrated various  kinds of sports  and the  ceremony  came to an end.


(10 )  Myanma  Lacquerware Institute  holds  first certificate presentation ceremony

YANGON, 20 June- Myanma Lacquerware  Institute held the first certificate  presentation ceremony for Diploma in Lacquerware, Higher  Lacquerware Course  and  Basic Lacquerware  Course  at the  hall of the  institute  in Bagan this after noon, with an address by Minister  for Cooperatives U Aung San.

Among those  present was  Chairman  of Magway  Division Peace and Development  Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw.  The minister made speech and presented prizes  to outstanding  trainees. Officials then presented certificates  to the trainees.  After the ceremony, the minister  and the Magway  Division  Chairman  inspected works of trainees exhibited in the hall.
 


(11) Myanmar delegation arrives back from ROK

YANGON,  20 June-A  Myanmar  delegation  led by  Deputy Minister for Agriculture  and Irrigation  Brig-Gen Khin Maung  arrived  back  here  by air  this  evening  from Republic  of  Korea  after a study  tour  in  ROK.  The delegation  was welcomed  back at Yangon  International Airport by directors general and managing  directors of ministries and their families.


(12) 3.264 kilos of marijuana seized in Hlegu

YANGON, 20 June-A combined team  comprising  members of regional  intelligence  unit and Myanmar  Police Force, acting on information,  searched the house of Win Htwe, son  of U Mya  Gyi,  Zayatkwin  Village  (East),  Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, on 12 June, 2000.

The  authorities  arrested  Win  Htwe  and  wife  Ma Wa Wa, Lwin,  daughter  of U Ohn Lwin and Ma Aye Aye Nyein, daughter  of  U  Hla  Nyein,  Kamakale Village,  Kawa Township and Win Myint, son of U Thaung Nyunt, Hsa/2 of Railway  Station yard, Insein  Township,  together with 3.264 kilos of marijuana.

Action  is being  taken  against  the  four  under  the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(13) Drug possessors get 15 years

YANGON, 20 June- Members of Tachilek Township Anti-drug Squad,  acting  on  information, searched  a  car  at Siwanhtaung  Check Point, Monghpon (Ka)  Village-tract, on 25 July 1999.

The  authorities  arrested  Sai Nwan,  39, son of U Lon Kwaik of Wanli Village, Htaunglek Village-tract and Aik In, 44, son of U Aik  Phone of  Sansai  Ward,  Tachilek Township together with 37,000 stimulant tablets.

On 28 April  2000,  they  were  sentenced  by  Tachilek District  Court to fifteen  years'  imprisonment  under Section  19 (A)  of  Narcotic  Drugs  and  Psychotropic Substances Law.


(14) 42 Minbu (Sagu)  Township NLD members  resign of own accord

YANGON, 20  June-Forty-two  members  resigned  from the National League for Democracy of Minbu (Sagu) Township, Magway  Division.  Forty-two  members  of Minbu  (Sagu) Township  NLD, Magway  Division,  of their own  accord, resigned  by sending  letters of  resignation  to Minbu (Sagu) Township  Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission  and the party  concerned on 11 May 2000 as they  no  longer  wished  to  participate  in  party politics of NLD.
