( 1 ) Senior General Than Shwe sends condolence to Emperor Akihito of Japan

YANGON,16 June-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the state Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of condolence to His Majesty Emperor Akihito of Japan on the passing away of Her Majesty the Empress Dowager, mother of His Majesty the Emperor.


( 2 ) The Special Refresher Course No 40 for Basic Education Teachers opened

YANGON, 16- The Special Refresher Course No 40 for Basic Education Teachers opened at Nawarat Hall, Central Institute o Civil Service in Hlegu Township, Yangon Division this morning, addressed by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, the chief Justice, the chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, deputy ministers, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, the acting rector of CICS, course instructors and trainee teachers.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-l said the government is conducting special refresher courses for teachers with the aims to enable the teachers who are nurturing youths to become reliable intellectuals and intelligentsia, for national development to understand and know the nations objective conditions and future prospects, to widen their scope of knowledge, to continuously work with consideration for the national interest based on their experience and to effectively assist the education sector for progress of the nation and the people with high and strong spirit.

In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged the trainee teachers to make studies so that the education sector will be able to successfully implement the political, economic and social objectives for emergence of a peaceful, pleasant, modern and developed nation; to take part in the education promotion programmes for the development of the human resources which is the essential requirement of the nation; and to nurture their pupils to be equipped with patriotism, Union Spirit, clear national outlook and the will to safeguard the national culture.
After cordially greeting the trainees, the Secretary-l inspected the computer room and the language. A total of 1,505 trainees are attending the course.


( 3 ) Secretary-2 inspects reclamation of Hlinethaya livestock breeding zone livestock and poultry farms

YANGON, 16 June-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected reclamation of livestock breeding zone in Hlinethaya Township this evening.

Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chair man of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, officials, the Secretary-2 inspected plots for the establishment of the livestock breeding zone in Hlinethaya Township.

Joint-Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee U Kyi Win reported to the Secretary-2 and party reclamation of plots for the livestock breeding zone. Then, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win and officials reported on cultivation of paddy on 500 acres of land in Hteinbin region of the township.

Next, the Secretary-3 and party went to local battalion in Hlinethaya and inspected the poultry farm of the battalion and gave necessary instructions.

( 4 ) Secretary-3 attends upper enshrinement, Htidaw hoisting and consecration ceremony of Pyithaya Hsutaungpyi Pagoda in Mongyai

YANGON, 16 June-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, accompanied by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, officials of State Peace and Development Council Chairmans Office, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft for Mandalay yesterday afternoon.

They arrived at Mandalay Airport at 3.15 pm and were welcomed by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint. Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and officials, departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association.

Then, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party left Mandalay by Tatmadaw aircraft for Lashio and arrived there at 4.30 pm yesterday.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint attended the enshrinement, Htidaw hoisting and consecration ceremony of Pyithaya Hsutaungpyi Pagoda this morning. Member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Presiding Sayadaw of Myole Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Lashio, Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kavindavara administered the Nine Precepts.

Members of Upahtaka Committee presented paritta flowers, paritta water, paritta sand and paritta thread to members of the Sangha who recited the Myitta sutta, three Yadana Guna and Pobbana sutta. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party were welcomed by Deputy Commander of North-East Command Brig-Gen San Thein, departmental officials and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party proceeded to Mongyai and arrived there at 5.10 pm yesterday. Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister U Aung Khin, Brig-Gen Soe Htay and Col Myint Hlaing enshrined the religious objects into the reliquary of the pagoda.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, ministers and national race leaders took the respective places. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, ministers conveyed the tiers of Shwehtidaw, Hngetmyatnadaw, atop the pagoda.

Then, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the commander and ministers climbed the pagoda and offered Seinbudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw atop the pagoda. They sprinkled scented water onto them and planted a Sasana Aunglandaw at the pagoda.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint offered Shwekya Thingan to the pagoda. Then, the consecration ceremony of Pyithaya Hsutaungpyi Pagoda was held on the platform of the pagoda. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the commander, ministers and national race leaders offered Shwekya Thingan, Mya Thabeik and fruits and flowers to Buddha images at the pagoda.

Members of the Sangha consecrated the pagoda.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party attended ceremony to plant Maha Bo tree at Pyithaya Hsutaungpyi pagoda yesterday evening. Then, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party planted a Botree. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint sprinkled scented water on the Botree.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint inspected religious objects, Shwehtidaw, Seinbudaw, Htidaws of encircling stupas to be enshrined into the upper reliquary of Pyithaya Hsutaungpyi Pagoda.

Then, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party went to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image in Mongyai and offered flowers, lights and water to the Buddha image. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint offered Shwethingan to the Buddha image.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the Commander, ministers and party paid obeisance to Nyaungbinaing Tawya Kyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Nandobhasa from PyinOoLwin, Mandalay Division, Bawditahtaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Narada from Monywa Township, Sagaing Division, Atula Maha Myakyaukzedi Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Khemacara from Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division.


( 5 ) Minister for H & T meets guests from China

YANGON, 15 June-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Governor of Yinjian Province Mr Jin Dexiang and party at his office at 3.30 pm today.They discussed matters relating to mutual interest of promoting tourism between the two countries.Also present at the deputy minister and the director-general of the ministry.


( 6 ) Ambassador U Linn Myaing presents credential to Queen of the Netherlands

YANGON, 17 June-U Linn Myaing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, presented his credentials to Her Majesty Queen Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, on 7 June 2000, in the Hague.

( 7 ) Minister receives Singaporean visitors

YANGON, 16 June-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Executive Officer of Teledesic Co of Singapore Mr Paul Cooper and Mr Jonh F Pierce at his office this afternoon. They discussed matters pertaining to communication. Also present at the call were Director-General of Directorate of Telecommunications U Kyi Than, General Manager of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications U Tha Oo and officials.


( 8 ) Minister receives Israeli Ambassador

YANGON, 16 June-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung received Israeli Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Gad Nathan who had completed his tour of duties in Myanmar, at the guest room of Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road this afternoon.Also present at the call were Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay and officials.


( 9 ) MAPT holds first four monthly meeting

YANGON, 16 June-Annual meeting for 1999-2000 financial year and first four monthly coordination meeting for year 2000 of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading were held at the meeting has of MAPT (Head office) at 8 am today, with an addressed by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.

Managing Director U Min Hla Aung assigned duties to officials for year 2000 2001 plans. Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone provided K 5,968,500 as stipends for 2000-2001 academic year to Managing Director U Min Hla Aung. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, U Min Hla Aung and officials presented prizes to winners for their outstanding performance.

( 10 ) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 16 June-The National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 2 pm today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members. Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin gave a speech at the meeting. National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management committee reported on matters related to National Convention, and members of NCCC took part in the discussion. Then, the chairman discussed the reports, and the meeting came to an end.


( 11 ) Minister a tends 6th International Conference on Future of Asia

YANGON, 16June-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairmans Office Brig-Gen Abel attended the 6th International Conference on the Future of Asia sponsored by Nihon Keizai Shimbun held in Tokyo, Japan, on 8 and 9 June. The State leaders from Asia, scholars and entrepreneurs attended the conference. Altogether 700 persons comprising economic entrepreneurs, researchers, economists took part in the discussions. They discussed economic progress after overcoming the economic crisis at the end of the 20th Century in Asia.


( 12 ) Drug possessor gets 5 years

YANGON, 16 June-Members of Namtu Township Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched Kalar, 30, son of U Chanyalan, Khomeik Village in Namtu Township, on 26 November 1998 and seized 0.00002 kg of opium from him.

On 22 February 1999, He was sentenced by Namtu Township Court to three years imprisonment under Section 15 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and five years imprisonment under Section 16 (C) of the law to serve concurrently.

( 13 ) Classical Oldies Entertainment presented

YANGON, 16 June-Hailing the year 2000 Myanmar Women s Day, the Classical Oldies Entertainment organized by Myanmar National Committee for Women s Affairs was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street this evening.

Present on the occasion were Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of the Secretary1, Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of the Secretary-2, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife Daw Marlar Tint, ministers and their wives, Chairman of Work Commit tee for Organizing the Classical Oldies Entertainment Professor Daw May May Yi and members, guests and the people.

The entertainment will be presented to the public on 17 and 18 June evening. Admission fees are K 1,000, K700andK500.


( 14 ) 26 Ngapudaw Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, June 16-Twenty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngapudaw Township, Ayeyawady Division. Twenty-six members of Ngapudaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngapudaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 August 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
