(13) Myanmar totally rejects International Labour Conference resolution taken in contravention of aims and objectives of ILO sad day for ILO and sadder day for ILO member developing countries

YANGON, 15 June-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today issued a Press  Release in connection with a resolution regarding Myanmar passed yesterday by the 88th Session of the International Labour Conference being held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The 88th Session of the International Labour Conference being held in  Geneva, Switzerland passed a resolution regarding Myanmar on 14th June 2000.

The action was politically motivated and spearheaded by a group of western nations who have a hidden agenda with regard to Myanmar. It was also a blatant misuse by the Western Industrialized countries of the tripartite nature of the ILO. This action was taken notwithstanding strong objections raised by the ASEAN countries as well as by a vast majority of countries  from the Asia and Pacific region. A wide range of countries from the three continents Asia, Africa and Latin America, including China, Cuba, Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines and the Sudan repeatedly
objected to the proposed coercive measures and called for cooperation with Myanmar to resolve outstanding issues.

It is most regrettable that the resolution was adopted despite the  goodwill and cooperation demonstrated by Myanmar. It was taken in contravention of  the aims and objectives of the ILO and the measures in the resolution far  exceed the authority of the ILO O under its Constitution.

It was indeed a sad day for the ILO and a sadder day for the developing countries that are Member States of the Organization. Today Myanmar is singled out for censure and punitive action in an arbitrary manner.  Tomorrow it may be another developing country. Such arbitrary actions could only impede the process of democratization and would prolong rather than hasten the emergence of a democratic society. The resolution is unfair and unjust and the process flawed and Myanmar totally rejects the
resolution. Myanmar wishes to reiterate that there.are no practices of forced labour in the country and that necessary administrative, executive and legislative  measures are being implemented to prevent occurrences of forced labour. Myanmar  will continue to promote cause of labour but will never bow to political  pressure. Myanmar will be resolute in implementing its chosen path of building a modern, developed and democratic society, where prosperity, rights and benefits will be extended to all strata of the society.
