(1 )  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe  sends felicitations to Portugal

YANGON 10 June-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and  Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of  felicitations to His Excellency Mr Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio,  President of the Republic of Portugal, on the occasion of the National Day of  the Republic of Portugal which falls on 10 June 2000.


(2)  Secretary-2 inspects plots of land for prawn breeding, meets with  entrepreneurs in Kyauktan Township

YANGON, 9 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the sites for prawn breeding in Kyauktan Township  this morning and met with prawn-breeding entrepreneurs of Shanchaung  Village-tract and Kamarkaloak Village-tract of Kyauktan Township.  In the briefing hall of the centre, the Secretary-2 heard reports on regional  development tasks of Kyauktan Township and matters pertaining to agriculture  and livestock breeding.

Chairman of Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council U Lu Maw reported  on construction of Mayanzweba Embankment for development of Kyauktan  Township, emergence of new fields, suitable plots for prawn breeding and the  condition of transport, and Yangon South District Agriculture Manager of  Myanma Agriculture Service U Than Tun on arrangements for cultivation of  crops on the new fields which will emerge as a result of building Mayanzweba  Embankment.

Head of Yangon Division Settlement and Land Records Department U Naing Win  reported on the survey of new fields and reclamation of the plots of land  outside the embankment for prawn breeding, and Deputy Director-General of the  Fisheries Department U Hla Win on conditions of plots of land for  organizations and private entrepreneurs to undertake prawn breeding.

Then, the prawn-breeding entrepreneurs reported on the breeding of prawns in  Kyauktan Township and their requirements.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said that about 11,000 acres of  land have emerged as a result of building Mayanzweba Embankment; the fields  have been distributed to those who did not have fields in the region; and  arrangements have been made to grow monsoon paddy in this rainy season and  sunflower in the cold season.

There are over 3,()00 acres of land outside the embankment for prawn  breeding; in accord with the instructions, plots of land will be allotted to  those who will really undertake prawn breeding. .

As a result of building the embankment, more 5,000 acres of land can be  placed under paddy in this rainy season in Kyauktan Township. Kyauktan  Township grows paddy most in comparison with other townships in Yangon  Division and can complete ploughing work the earliest.

If the already-built embankment is extended up to Thongwa Township, another  5,000 acres of land will also emerge.

Motor roads are also being built and extended to ensure smooth transport in  the township.

Then, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on the work. After that, the
Secretary-2 and party inspected Mayanzweba Embankment, agricultural work in  the new fields and conditions of the plots of land for prawn breeding.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party went to Kamarkaloak Village in Kyauktan  Township, by helicopter, where they were welcomed by Chairman of Yangon South  District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein and members,  township and village authorities, members of USDA and Maternal and Child  Welfare Association, teachers and students, farmers and local people.

The entrepreneurs reported on application for plots of land to undertake  prawn breeding, Dr Htay Myint, who is engaged in prawn breeding work, on the  needs of prawn breeding, and local farmers on regional requirements.

Head of Yangon Division Forest Department U Ko Ko reported on arrangements  for the growing of mangroves outside the embankment to ensure long- term  existence of Mayanzweba Embankment. for prawn breeding and left for Kyauktan.

Then, the Secretary-2 greeted the local people and inspected the plots of  land for prawn breeding and left for Kyauktan.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-2 met with district and township level  departmental officials and prawn- breeding entrepreneurs in Yadana Hall of  Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council.

Deputy Director-General of the Fishery Department U Hla Win reported on  reclamation of lands for the breeding of sea prawns in Kyauktan Township and  arrangements to grant permits to the entrepreneurs, and the entrepreneurs on  their requirements In meeting with the entrepreneurs and local people in  Kyauktan Township, the Secretary-2 said the purpose of his visit to Kyauktan  Township is to observe the allotment of plots of land to prawn-breeding  entrepreneurs and meet with them.

After that, the Secretary-2 explained arrangements to allot plots of land for  the breeding of sea prawns to seven entrepreneurs.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the sea shrimp fry production  station run by Myanmar CP Group in cooperation with the Fishery Department in  Anaukpaing Ward, Kyauktan,

The station has eight shrimp fry breeding ponds; about one million shrimps  are available for those who would like to carry out sea prawn breeding work.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party left Kyauktan by helicopter and arrived  back here in the evening.

(3)  Secretary 2 attends entertainment programme of PRC art and acrobatic  troupe

YANGON, 9 June- The art and acrobatic troupe of the People's Republic of  China comprising 30 members currently here to present entertainment  programmes to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic  Relations between Myanmar and China, performed at the National Theatre on  Myoma Kyaung Street at 7 pm today, attended by ,Secretary-2 of the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The PRC art and acrobatic troupe presented entertainment programme to the  guests..

After the ceremony, on behalf of Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Deputy Minister U  Soe Nyunt and Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong presented a flower basket of  flowers to the art troupe.


(4)  Minister inspects activities of Ministry of Transport in Sittway

YANGON, 9 June-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by  Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Director-General U Soe Win of Department of Marine  Administration, Managing Director U Thein Htay of Myanma Port Authority,  Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint of Inland Water Transport and officials,  arrived at Sittway Airport yesterday.

In the hall of the airport, officers reported on extension of departure hall,  progress of work, financial matters and installation of Myanmar handicraft at  the terminal of the air port.

The minister, the deputy minister and party inspected progress of the tasks,  greening tasks at entrance to the airport, the apron and passengers. The  minister left instructions on timely completion of the projects.

On 9 June, officials of departments in Sittway under the ministry reported to  the minister, the deputy minister and officials on tasks being undertaken and  cultivation and livestock breeding work. Deputy Minister U Pe Than gave  supplementary reports.


(5) Meeting held to coordinate implementation of cooperative projects

YANGON, 9 June-Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San attended the coordination  meeting on implementation of cooperative projects in Bago this morning.

The chairmen of cooperative societies reported on the boosting of  agricultural production of the agricultural cooperative societies, matters  related to development of industrial cooperative societies and export prow  motion, and the township staff officers on the progress of cooperative  societies.

Deputy Director of Bago Division Cooperative Department U Toe Sein explained  arrangements for development of cooperative work in Bago Division.

The minister gave instructions on cultivation of four main crops and kitchen  crops, and urged all to strive to be self-reliant.

(6) Prisons Department holds first four-monthly work coord meeting

YANGON, 9 June - The Prisons Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs held  the first four-monthly work coordination meeting for Year 2000 at the  department in Insein this morning.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing addressed the meeting.

The minister said that the Prisons Department is a department which takes  care of those sentenced to imprisonment for their violation of existing laws  of the State, and so great can is to be taken over security. However, those  sentenced to imprisonment are citizens of the nation, and they are to be  dealt with in accord with the manual and by-law of the department and the  motto "break the colonial habit and safeguard the interest of the nation and  the people".

In addition, all are to participate in striving for the successful  implementation of the economic, social and political objectives laid down by  the government Be Prisons Department is undertaking production work related  to agriculture, livestock breeding and stone production extensively, so it  needs to step up production in order to contribute to economic development of  the nation.

With regard to agriculture, sugar-cane, cotton, corn and pulses and beans as  well as paddy need to be cultivated. Not only the crops covered by the  projects of the State but also kitchen crops and vegetables are to be grown  on an extensive scale. If departmental work is done with a sense of Union  Spirit and goodwill, more and more progress, can be made.

Then, the deputy minister gave instructions on the work.

After wards, the minister, together with the deputy minister and party,
inspected Pyitha Rice Mill and Pyitha Grocery run by the Prisons Department.


(7) Ministry of Energy offers 'soon' to Sayadaws of  State Pariyatti Sasana  University (Yangon)

YANGON, 9 June-Ministry of Energy offered 'soon' to members, of the Sangha of  State Pariyatti Sasana University (Yangon) led by the Rector Sayadaw today.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Rector Agga Maha  Ganthavacaka Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vamnita. Then, Minister Brig-Gen Lun  Thi and Daw Khin Mar Aye donated provisions to the Sayadaw.

Next, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi presented. K 95,000 for 'soon' for a day to  Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of  the Sasana.

Afterwards, staff of the ministry offered 'soon' to the Sayadaws.


(8)  Commander attends consecration of Buddha image at Maha Thandayon  Kyaungtaik in Aungmyethazan Township

YANGON, 9 June - A ceremony to consecrate Buddha image donated by Commander  Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife and family for keeping it at Sasana Gonyi Yadana  Theingi Dhammayon of Maha Thandayon Kyaungtaik in Aungmye- thazan Township  was held at the Dhammayon on 7 June morning.

First, Sayadaws consecrated the Buddha image;

The Commander and wife presented provisions to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw  of the Kyaungtaik.

Then, the Commander and wife and family donated K 150,000 to the Kyaungtaik.

The Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of the Kyaungtaik delivered a sermon, followed  by sharing of merits.

Afterwards, the Commander attended the Commander's Shield Sepak Takraw  Tournament and skills 'Chinlon' of demonstrated by Tenth Standard Student Ma  May Zin.

A total of 34 teams are taking part in the Sepak Takraw Tournament.

(9)  Coord Meeting between Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council  and various departments held

YANGON, 9 June - A coordination meeting between the Sagaing Division Peace  and Development Council and various departments was held at Zeyathriri Hall  of North-West Command on 6 June.

Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win made a speech on the occasion.

Chairmen and departmental officials reported to the meeting on their  activities for the development of health, education and social sectors in  their region and functions of factories and mills.

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win attended to their needs.

Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win then attended the cash presentation ceremony for  installation of lift at Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat hospital in Mandalay.

Altogether 12 well-wishers presented K 1.46 million to Commander Maj-Gen Ye  Myint, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein and officials.


(10) Commander attends departmental coordination meeting in Shan State 

YANGON, 9 June-A work coordination meeting was held at City Hall in Taunggyi  Township, Shan State (South), on 7 June morning, attended by Chairman of Shan  State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen  Maung Bo. The commander called for engaging in livestock breeding, improving  transportation and development of the township.

Then, officials of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise and Taunggyi Township  Development Affairs Committee reported on development tasks undertaken and to  be done, and members of village and ward Peace and Development Councils and  town elders reported requirements in education, health, social, agriculture  and livestock sectors and regional development, and the commander attended to  their needs.

Afterwards, the meeting concluded with the remark by the commander.


(11) Mon State level departments coordinate

YANGON, 9 June-A coordination meeting on expediting development of  agriculture, livestock breeding and industrial sectors and boosting  production for year 2000 was held at Aung San Hall of Mon State Peace and  Development Council Office on 6 June.

The Commander gave instructions on agriculture, livestock breeding and  industrial sectors of Mon State and tasks to be undertaken.

Director U Aye of Regional Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department  reported on production targets of State-owned factories and accomplishments in  1999-2000 fiscal and Director U Wan Shwe of Planning Department on the  targets for 2000-2001 fiscal.

Then, the Commander assigned duties to respective officials and gave  concluding remarks.

(12) Rakhine State Peace and Development Council, departments meet

YANGON, 9 June - Rakhine State Peace and Development Council and Rakhine  State level departments held a coordination meeting at the meeting hall of  Western Command Headquarters on 5 June. First, the Commander gave  instructions on extension of regional development, transportation,  cultivation and livestock and fisheries matters.

Departmental officials reported on tasks being carried out in their  respective sectors and chairmen of district and townships on agriculture,  livestock and fisheries and regional development matters in the respective  district and townships.

On 6 June morning, the meeting continued. After hearing the reports of  officials, the Commander fulfilled the requirements.


(13) 11 Ngaphe Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 9 June-Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy  of Ngaphe Township, Magway Division.

Eleven members of Ngaphe Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngaphe Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 May  2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
