(1) General Maung Ave and wife and delegation leave for China on official visit

YANGON, 5 June- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing saw off a  Myanmar delegation led by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San at Yangon International Airport this morning which left for the People's Republic of China on an official visit at the invitation of Vice-President of the People's Republic of China Mr Hu Jintao.

Also present at the airport to see off the delegation were Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun and their wives, Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador of PRC to Myanmar Mr Liang Dong and staff and departmental heads.

The Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and wife were accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife Daw San Yon, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Electric Power Mai-Gen Tin Htut and officials of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


(2)Well wishers donate cash to Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise

YANGON, 5 June-Well-wishers donated cash to Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise to be used in community welfare activities at the City Hall this afternoon, and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army)  Lt-Gen Tin Oo made a speech and accepted the donations.

Also present were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office LtGen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff military officers, well-wishers and officials of Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise.

On the occasion, the Secretary-2 thanked the well-wishers for their contributions towards community welfare activities of Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise. Then, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun made speeches.

Director of Resettlement Col Aung Thein explained how contributions of the well-wishers are being used in the community welfare activities. The Secretary-2 the ministers and the deputy minister accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.  Minister Maj- Gen Sein Htwa accepted the donations, and thanked the well-wishers.


(3)Secretary-2 inspects tax-free market in Yangon

YANGON, 5 June-Secretary-2 of Sate Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by responsible officials, inspected the tax-free market of vegetables, meat and fish producers of Yangon City Development Committee at the corner of Hunthawady and Kyundaw Streets in Kamayut Township this morning.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected shops in the market and cordially met shopkeepers and customers. Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave instructions to the officials on selling goods at reasonable prices, implementing the objectives of opening the market.

(4)   Meeting held to coordinate cooperation programmes of Myanmar and UNICEF

YANGON, 5 June - A meeting to coordinate the cooperation programmes of Myanmar and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) during the period from 2001 to 2005 was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this afternoon.

Present were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, and officials of UN agencies, chairmen and officials of non-governmental organizations and guests. Minister Brig-Gen Abel made an opening speech.

Resident Representative of UNICEF Mr John Bertrand Mendis, Regional Planning Adviser Senior Officer U Aung Tun Thet of the Office of East Asia and Pacific Region of UNICEF and Deputy Resident Representative and Senior Programme Officer of UNICEF Dr Rosella Morelli explained matters related to the cooperation programmes. Then, a general round of discussions followed.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel and Resident Representative Mr John Bertrand Mendis made speeches, which brought the meeting to an end.


(5) Managers of State/Division Small Loans Enterprises hold meeting

YANGON, 5 June-Managers of State/Division Small Loans Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue held a meeting on the closing of the budget for the 1999-2000 fiscal year and work coordination for the 2000-2001 fiscal year in the training hall of Myanma Small Loans Enterprise on Pansodan Street this afternoon. Present were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Than Tun and enterprises under the ministry .and officials.

The minister said that MSLE is a state owned economic enterprise which is disbursing loans to the people in need of money at a reasonable rate of interest within a short period. Being a state-owned economic enterprise, it has to abide by laws and rules and regulations to the letter and provide monetary services to the people.

The minister urged all to lay down working programmes after assessing the previous fiscal year's performance of the enterprise and strive to exceed the targets set for the present fiscal year.

Then, the minister presented awards to outstanding state/division branches. The meeting concluded in the evening.


(6)  Minister attends first four-monthly meeting of BSI

YANGON, 5 June-The first four-monthly meeting of Bureau of Special Investigation for year 2000 was held at the meeting hall of Myanmar Police Forces of Ministry of Home Affairs at 10 am today, attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing.

The minister said that the government is implementing the political, economic and social objectives for the emergence of a peaceful, tranquil, modern and developed nation and the employees of BSI are to participate in the respective sectors such as preventing of crimes and drugs cases, carrying out the tasks to meet the tasks to meet the target, disposing of case as scheduled and exposing cases harmful to the nation economy.  The deputy minister gave necessary instructions and the meeting continued.

(7) Three-storey building of Renal Special Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit opens at Mandalay General Hospital

YANGON, 5 June-A ceremony to open the three-storey building of Renal Special Care Unit and Cardiac Care Unit of Mandalay General Hospital was held at the building this morning.

Present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and military and civilian officers, professors, specialists and well-wishers. First, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and well-wishers Shanphet Yeiktha Daw Nyunt Yi formally opened the building, and Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint unveiled the plaque.

Then, the Commander and the Minister and party inspected the building. At the opening ceremony of the building, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein gave speeches. On behalf of the well-wisher, Professor U Meik explained the purpose of the donation and handed over documents related to the building to the Minister.

Then, the Minister accepted two air-conditioners worth K 400,000 to be used in Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) donated by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, K 180,000 for CCU by Mann Myanmar Construction and K 50,000 by Dr Kyaw Nyein ,Daw Khin Khin Su.

The three-storey building worth K 4.5 million was donated by Daw Nyunt Yi and Shanphet Yeiktha family. According to Yangon-Mandalay Health Standard Equalization Programme, modern equipment is being installed at hospitals in Mandalay, and the modern hospital equipment for renal and cardiac units will be installed at the building to give treatment. The operation began at 8 am and completed at 11 am the same day and the patient is in good condition. More cardiac surgical operations will be performed.


(8)   Committee of Experts/Officials Meeting of BIMST-EC Energy Sector Cooperation Programme

YANGON, 5 June- The Committee of Experts/Officials Meeting of BIMST-EC Energy Sector Cooperation programme hosted by the Union of Myanmar was held at the Hotel Equatorial on Aplanpya Pagoda Road in Dagon Township this morning, with an address by Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi.

The BIMST-EC was established with Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and Myanmar is the leading nation of the Energy Sector Cooperation Programme of BIMST-EC.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, deputy ministers, managing directors of the Ministry of Energy, Director-General U Soe Myint of Energy Planning Department members of Myanmar delegation, diplomatic crops, delegates of BIMST-EC member nations Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand and guests. First, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi delivered an address. He said:

Then, Minister Brig- Gen Lun Thi and delegates of BIMST- EC member nations had the documentary photo taken. Afterwards, delegates discussed setting up of energy sector and energy productions in the respective nations and opportunities of cooperation matters. The meeting continues tomorrow.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi hosted dinner at the Hotel Equatorial in honour of the delegates. Myanmar has joined BIMST-EC since 1997; The present meeting will draw an Energy Sector Cooperation Programme between BIMST-EC member nations.


(9) Voters of Maha Aungmye Township unanimously submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 5 June- The people from Maha Aungmye Township, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at rallies in Mahamyaing-l and Maha Nwezin wards on 21 April.

A total of 8,000 people from nine wards attended the rally in Mahamyaing Ward 2. On behalf of attendance's, U Yin Maung Tun expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Nine representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Aye.

A total of 12,000 people from nine wards rallied in Maha Nwezin Ward. On behalf of attendance's, U Htwe Thein expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Nine representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Htay Maung. The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan-Our Three Main National Causes.

(10) Drug trafficker gets 5, 25 years

YANGON, 5 June-Members of Yangon Division Special Anti-drug Squad, on suspicion, searched Hla Thein, 32, son of U Thet Way, No 540, Zwekabin Street, Ward 54, Dagon Myothit (South), at St John Bus Stop, on 8 April 1998, and found 376 grams of opium oil in his possession.

He was tried under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law by Yangon West District Court and sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment under Section 15, and to 25 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) to serve separately on 18 May 2000.


(11) 14 Kalay Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 5 June-Fourteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kalay Township, Sagaing Division. Fourteen members of Kalay Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kalay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 22 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
