(1) State Councillors of PRC arrives on goodwill visit
 
YANGON, 31 May-State Councillors of the People's Republic of China Mr Ismail Amat and delegation arrived here at 9.15 am today on a goodwill visit at the invitation of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. They were welcomed at ,Yangon International Airport by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Culture U win Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong, embassy staff and departmental officials.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and State Councillors of the People's Republic of China Mr Ismail Amat and delegation left the airport by car for Innya Kantha State House. The State Councillors Mr Ismail Amat, was accompanied by senior officials from the State Administration of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China.



(2)PRC State Councillors calls on Secretary-1 
 
YANGON, 31 May - State Councillors of the People's Republic of China Mr Ismail Amat and party called on Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 2 pm today. Also present at the call together with the Secretary-l were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Director-General of Political Department U Nyunt Maung Shein. The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of PRC Mr Liana Dong.



 
(3) Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of State Councillors of PRC and delegation 
 
YANGON, 3 1 May-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt -Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of State Councillors of the People's Republic of China Mr. Ismail Amat and goodwill delegation at Karaweik Palace at 7 pm today. The dinner was attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, the Chief Justice, the Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon, deputy ministers, Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong, and department heads. Before the dinner, artistes presented an entertainment programme to the guests.

(4) Minister meets Chief Executive of Smurfit Toyo Holdings Pte Ltd
 
YANGON, 31 May-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Chief Executive of Smurfit Toyo Holdings Pte Ltd of Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China Mr Gabriel McCarrick at his office at 1.30 pm today.  Also present were Director-General U Tin Hlaing of Directorate of Industries Managing Director U Kyaw Myint of Myanma Foodstuff Industries, Managing Director U Thaik Tun of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries, Deputy Director General U Tet Tun of Regional Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department and Head of Office U Myint Swe.



 
(5) Chinese goodwill delegation visits Maha Bandoola Bridge project, Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge 
 
YANGON, 31 May-State Councillors of the People's Republic of China Mr. Ismail Amat and goodwill delegation currently here at the invitation of Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited Maha Bandoola Bridge under construction and Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge this evening. The goodwill delegation arrived at the office of Maha Bandoola Bridge Project on the bank of Pazundaung Township at 3 pm today.  They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Managing Director of Public Works U Nay Soe Naing, Project superintend engineer U Khin Maung Aye and officials. Deputy Minister U Tint Swe explained the construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge project.  The State Councillors and party inspected installation of frame at the bridge. The goodwill delegation went to Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge . Then, the goodwill delegation and Minister U Win Sein viewed the commemorative pillar constructed by engineers and technicians from Myanmar and the People's Republic of China and posed for souvenir photos in front of the pillar.



(6) World No Tobacco Day for 2000 observed
 
YANGON, 31 May-A ceremony to mark World No Tobacco Day for year 2000 was held at the hall of Institute of Nursing (Yangon) this morning, attended by Minister for Health Mai-Gen Ket Sein .  Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein made a opening speech and acting resident representative Dr Lin Aung of World Health Organization read out the message of the Director of WHO ( South- East Asia ). Dr Khin Maung Lwin the paper on Beware of Attractive Advertisements of Tobacco.

(7) Minister meets Chairman of Karnjanaburi Sawmill Co Ltd
 
YANGON, 31 May-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Chairman of Karnjanaburi Sawmill Co Ltd (Branch-2) of- Thailand Mr Rusmeererkset Soonthorn and party at his office at 11 am today. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials.



(8) Korean, Myanmar entrepreneurs meet 
 
YANGON, 31 May-With the arrangement of Commercial Section of Embassy of the Republic of Korea, a meeting between a Korean trade mission from Chung Buk Province, Korea, and Myanmar entrepreneurs was held at Hotel Equatorial this morning.  It was attended by Ambassador of ROK Mr Chung Jung-gum and Counsellor Mr Kin Ji Young and Attache (Commercial) Mr Kim Jae-chan of ROK Embassy, entrepreneurs from 46 Myanmar companies and 16 Korean companies and guests. Both sides discussed mutual cooperation and promotion of bilateral economic cooperation.
 


(9) Chinese delegation from Yunnan Province leaves for home
 
 YANGON, 31 May-The delegation of Yunnan Province of People's Republic of China led by Chairman of Yunnan Province Legal Affairs Committee and Secretary of Legal Affairs Commission Mr Qin Guangrong visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, and paid homage to it at 9 am today. He then signed in the visitors'™ book and donated cash. The delegation left for home by air at 1.30 pm and was seen off at the airport by Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and senior police officers, Military Apache of PRC Embassy Mr Xu Shu Lai and officials.

(10) Minister inspects Textile Mill No 2, Leather factory 
 
YANGON, 31 May-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials, inspected Textile Mill No 2 of Myanma Textile Industries in Mayangon Township this morning . The minister discussed production of quality textile with personnel and workers of the mill. Afterwards, the minister inspected Leather Factory of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries and gave instructions. Factory Manager reported on production process of leather, followed by a supplementary report by Managing Director U Thaik Tun of MGMI.Later, the minister inspected the products of the factory.



(11) Minister inspects Myanma Shipyard, IMT 
 
YANGON, 31 May-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by officials, inspected Myanma Shipyards on Bayintnaung Street this morning. The minister also inspected building of a ship for Java Marine Lines Pte Ltd and a support ship named Java Gold, and repair of Myat Yadana shallow-water going ship for tourist sightseeing, and building of Sun Shine and Moon Been yacht. Then, the minister inspected Institute of Marine Technology.  Later, the minister gave instruction.



 
(12) Illegal drug possessor gets five years
 
YANGON, 31 May-The Lashio Township Court handed down a sentence of five years'™ imprisonment on a drug possessor on 10 February 1999. Members of Lashio Township Police Force, acting on information, searched Lauk Pauk, 23, of Ward 5, Lashio at 11.35 am on 17 December 1998 and found 0.00025 kg of heroin on him. Action was taken against him according to Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The court handed down three years'™ imprisonment under Section 15 and five years'™ imprisonment under Section 16 (C) under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law to serve concurrently.

(13) Commander attends coordination meeting of Township MCWAs
 
YANGON, 31 May - A coordination meeting of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Associations in Mandalay Division, sponsored by Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association, was held at the office of Mandalay Division MCWA yesterday morning, attended by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Mai-Gen Ye Myint Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint spoke on the occasion. Mai-Gen Ye Myint and officials who presented certificate of honour to them. The commander and party present offertories to members of the Sangha.



 
(14) Minister inspects preparations for Photo Exhibition on 50th Anniversary of Sino-Myanmar Diplomatic Relations 
 
YANGON, 31 May-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung today inspected preparations for Photo Exhibition on the 50th Anniversary of Sino-Myanmar Diplomatic Relations to be held at the City Hall. The minister inspected colour and black and white photos on bilateral cooperation in political economic and social sectors and Chinese traditional lacquerware and bronze and ceramic handcrafts which will be displayed at the exhibition.  The exhibition is to be held from 2 to 4 June from 9 am to 5 pm daily.



 
(15) 38 NLD members in Pale Township resign of own accord
 
YANGON, 31 May-Thirty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Lettaunggyi Village, Pale Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Division. Thirty-eight members of Lettaunggyi Village, Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 30 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
