(1) Secretary-1  inspects  construction of ordination  hall of  International  Theravada  Buddhist  Missionary University

YANGON,  30  May-Secretary  1 of the  State  Peace  ant  Development  Council Lt.  Gen Khin Nyunt and  officials  of the  State  Peace  and  Development  Council  Office  arrived at the site of construction of ordination  hall  of  International  Theravada  Buddhist  Missionary  University this morning.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Minister for  Religious  Affairs U Aung  Khin,  Deputy  Minister  for  Construction  U Tint  Swe,  heads  of  departments  and  officials.  The Secretary-1  inspected progress of work  of  construction  of  ordination  hall  and  gave  instructions.  The Secretary-1  inspected  construction  of Aryongan Taxiing and greening of its environs.

The  Secretary-1  and party went to the  Administrative  Office  of ITBMU  and the site for  library  (Central).  The  Secretary-1  and party  inspected  activities  for  making the compound of the library  green and  pleasant  and construction of a fountain.

The  Secretary-1,-inspected  finishing  touches  of the  library ant Myanma artistic  works.  Deputy  Minister U  Tint Swe and officials  reported on progress of work of  the library and  greening  of its  environs  and Myanma  artistic  works.  The  Secretary-1  then  gave  instructions.  The  Secretary-1  and party  went to the  Sixth  Buddhist  Synod  Museum  where  he  inspected  preparations  for display of articles used in the Sixth  Buddhist Synod.

Adviser  to the State  Peace  and  Development  Council  Office U Arnt Maung and  Director-General  of Religious  Affairs  Department  Dr  Myo  Myint  reported  on  preparations.  The  Secretary-1  gave  instructions  on  display of valuable  ancient  documents and articles of  the Synod.



(2)  Secretary-l  receives  national  race  leaders of  Northern Shan State Special Region-3

YANGON,  30  May-  Chairman  of  Work  Committee  for  Development  of  Border  Areas  and  National  Races  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development  Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  received  national  race  leaders of  Shan State North Special  Region-3 U Say Htin and U Kan  Ywet at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this evening.

Also present were Head of  Department  of the Office of  Strategic  Studies of the  Ministry of Defence Col Kyaw  Thein and officials.  Regional  development,  peace and  stability in the region and  combating  narcotic  drugs  were discussed.



(3) Drip irrigation system launched in Thazi

YANGON, 30 May-Minister  for Agriculture and Irrigation  Maj-Gen  Nyunt  Tin  inspected  long-staple  cotton  cultivation  at a model farm in Sagaing  Township on 28  May.

Accompanied  by  officials,  the  minister  inspected  Htanzalok  Dam in Monywa  Township  which has a storage  capacity of 2,800-acre feet and is irrigating  water to  1,000 acres of crops and drinking water to  surrounding  areas.  Yesterday, the minister  attended  launching of  drip  irrigation  system in cooperation  with Israel at  Hlinetet Central Farm in Thazi, Mandalay Division.

Minister  Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Ambassador of Israel Mr  Gad Nathan gavel  speeches.  Officials  also  explained  the  benefits  of  drip  irrigation  system.  Minister  Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin presented  fruit basket to Ambassador  of Israel Mr Gad Nathan and Mr Yoram  Snech, who was an  expert in drip irrigation system.

Minister  Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Ambassador of Israel Mr  Gad  Nathan  formally  launched  the  drip  irrigation  system.  The drip irrigation system can supply water to  large  stretches of land to put under double  cropping.  The  equipment  used in the  system  can  last 10 to 15  years.  Together  with  Ambassador  Mr Gad  Nathan  and  experts  from  Israel,  Minister  Maj-Gen  Nyunt  Tin  inspected Hlinetet Canning Factory.

In Meiktila, the minister  inspected repair of tractors  at a workshop.  The minister also met with officials at  the workshop of Irrigation Department.

(4)  Minister  inspects  functions  of  factories  in  Insein Township

YANGON, 30  May-Minister  for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung,  accompanied  by  officials,  arrived at the  factory of  Myanmar Euroworld International Ltd jointly established  by Myanma  Textile  Industries  and Myanmar  Industrial  Holdings  CO  Ltd  of  Hong  Kong  this  morning.  The  minister  inspected  export-quality  garments  at  the  factory.  The  minister  gave  instructions  on  arrangements  to be made for  extension  of exports and  measures  for  fire  prevention.  Myanmar  Euroworld  International  Ltd is  located  at No 13/15  on  Insein  Mingaladon  Road in East Ywama Ward,  Insein  Township.  The factory sells 90% of the products for export.

The  minister  also  inspected  the  factory  of Yangon  Knitting  Manufacture CO Ltd jointly established by MTI  and Yangon  Industries  (Hong Kong) in Insein Township.  In the briefing hall, the minister met officials of the  factory  and gave  instructions  on work.  The  factory  sells 90% of the products for export.



(5) Minister meets Chinese delegation

YANGON, 30 May-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin  met a  delegation  led by  Vice-President  of Dong Feng  Motor Group of the  People's  Republic of China Mr Shen  Ning Wu at his office at 1 pm today.  Also present were  Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials.



(6) Minister meets Ambassador of India

YANGON, 30 May-Minister for Commerce  Brig-Gen Pyi Sone  met Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and party at his  office at 9 am today.  Similarly, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi  Sone met Charge d' Affaires ai of  Japanese  Embassy Mr  Yoshihiko  Kamo and party at his office at 10 am today.  Also  present  were  Director-General  U Nyunt  Aye and  officials.



(7)Yunnan  Province  delegation  calls  on  Chief  Justice, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs

YANGON,  30 May-  Chairman  of  Yunnan  Province  Legal  Affairs  Committee  and  Secretary  of Yunnan  Province  political and Legal Affairs Commission Mr Qin Guangrong  and  party  currently  here,  accompanied  by  Military  Attach of the People's Republic of China Mr Xu Shu Lai,  called on Chief  Justice U Aung Toe at his office  this  morning.

Also  present at the call were Deputy  Chief  Justice U  Than Oo, Supreme Court Justices U Khin Myint and U Chit  Lwin, Director-General U.  Tin Aye of Supreme Court and  Head of Office U Win Myint Oo.  Director-General  U Tin  Aye  explained  organizational  set-up  of  courts  and  judicial affairs.

 In the  afternoon,  the  delegation of Yunnan  Province  accompanied by Military  Attach Mr Xu Shu Lai called on  Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win at  his office  this  afternoon.  Also  present at the call  were  Director-General U Nyunt Maung Shein of Political  Affairs  Department,  Director-General U Thein Myint of  Consular,  International  Law and Treaties and Research  Department and Deputy Director  General U Hlaing Bwa of  Political  Affairs  Department.  In  the  evening,  the  guests visited the National  Museum find Gems Emporium.

(8) Minister for F&R meets guests from Japan

YANGON, 30 May- Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin  Maung  Thein  met  Director  Mr  Yoichi  Takahashi  of  Institute of Fiscal and Monetary  Policy of Ministry of  Finance, Japan and Director Mr Hironori  Sento of Tokyo  Stock  Exchange  and party at his office at 3 pm today.  Also present at the call were  Governor of Central Bank  of  Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw  Maung  and  Managing  Director  Thura U Myint Shwe of Myanma Economic Bank.


(9) Minister meets Ambassador of Sri Lanka

YANGON, 30 May- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen  Saw Lwin met  Ambassador  of Sri  Lanka to  Myanmar  Mr  Ubhayasekara  Mapa at his  office  this  morning.  They  discussed  matters  related  to  promotion  of  tourism  between  two  countries.  Also  present  were  Deputy  Minister  Brig-Gen  Aye Myint Kyu,  Director  General U  Khin  Latt  of  Directorate  of  Hotels  and  Tourism,  Managing  Director  U Kyi  Tun  of  Myanma  Hotels  and  Tourism Services and officials.



(10)  Seminar  on  Development  Finance  and  Credit  Analysis for Myanmar held

YANGON, 30 May-A  seminar on  Development  Finance  and  Credit Analysis for Myanmar Co-sponsored by Ministry of  Finance  and  Revenue,  Development  Bank of Japan  and  Japan  Economic  Research  Institute  was  held  at the  Sedona Hotel yesterday  morning.  Present were Minister  for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein and Ministry  of Finance  and  Revenue,  Deputy  Director-General  Mr  Kiyoshi  Goto  of  Development  Bank  of  Japan  and  officials,  officials of State-owned  and private banks  and guests.  Minister U Khin Maung Thein gave a speech.  Then,  Deputy  Director  General  Mr  Kiyoshi  Goto  of  Development  Bank of Japan explained the purpose of the  seminar.  The seminar will be held till 2 June.

(11)  First  Four  monthly  Meeting  of  Ministry  of  transport concludes

YANGON, 30 May The first four-monthly  meeting for 2000  of the Ministry of Transport  concluded at the ministry  this morning.  The final-day session of the meeting was  attended by Minister  for  Transport  Maj-Gen Hla Myint  Swe,  Deputy  Ministers  Brig-Gen  Kyaw  Myint  and  divisional  officials.  Deputy  Minister Brig- Gen Kyaw  Myint and U Pe Than  took  part in  discussions  on the  reports.  The minister gave concluding remarks.



(12) PRC Ambassador  assesses 50-year diplomatic ties  with Further enhancing mutual  relations,  trust, amity and cooperation with Myanmar

YANGON, 30 May-Press conference on the 50th Anniversary  of establishment  of diplomatic  relations  between the  People's Republic of China and the Union of Myanmar was  held at the residence of the Ambassador of the People's  Republic of China, No 67 on Pyay Road in Dagon Township  this morning.

Present  on  the  occasion  were  Deputy  Minister  for  Information  Brig-Gen Aung The in,  Director-General  U  Khin  Maung  Htay  of  Myanma  Radio  and  Television,  Managing  Director  U Tin Kha of News  and  Periodicals  Enterprise,  Director  (News) U Hla Tun, Chief Editor U  Zaw  Min  Thein  of  Myanmar  News  Agency  (Internal),  Adviser to NPE U Maung  Maung  Nyo,  Patron of  Myanmar  Foreign  Correspondents  Club U Sein Win,  President of  the Club U Sao Kai Hpa and  members,  local and foreign  correspondents, Ambassador of the PRC Mr Liang Dong and  Counsellor Mr Tang Ying and staff.



(13) Trees to be planted to hail Myanmar Women's Day

YANGON, 30 May-A coordination meeting on planting trees  to hail Myanmar  Women's Day which falls on 3 July, was  held at the Social Welfare  Department  this afternoon.  Present  on  the  occasion  were  Vice-Chairperson  of  Myanmar National Working  Committee for Women's Affairs  Professor  Daw May May Yi,  member Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe  and Secretary U Sit Myaing and departmental  officials.  Daw May May Yi spoke on the occasion.  Staff Officer of  Ahlon Township Forest  Department U Bo Ni explained the  project of planting  trees in Yangon  Division.  Dr Daw  Khin Win Shwe gave  suggestions on the task of planting  trees.  A general round of discussions  then  followed.  The meeting  ended with  concluding  remarks by Daw May  May Yi.

(14) Minister inspects salterns in Mon State

Y ANGON, 30  May-Minister  for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint,  accompanied  by  Managing  Director U Saw Win of Myanma  Salt and Marine  Chemicals  Enterprise  and  officials,  inspected mine and salterns and salterns in Mon.  State  from  16 to 29  May.  On 26  May,  the  Minister  heard  reports on climatic  conditions and salt  production in  1999-2000  fiscal year  presented  by the Eastern  Zone  Manager at Zone  Manager's  Office in  Mawlamyine.  The  Minister  gave  necessary  instructions.  Then,  the  Minister and party  inspected  self-reliance  vegetable  cultivation  in the compound of the office.  On 27 May,  the  Minister  inspected  Panga and Setse  salterns  in  Thanbyuzayet  Township.  On 29 May, the  Minister  also  inspected  Htanbingyaung salterns and gave instructions  on work.



(15)Myanmar  Karatedo  Federation  President's  Cup Karatedo Championship concludes

YANGON, 30 May-The prize presentation  ceremony for the  Myanmar  Karatedo  Federation  President's Cup Karatedo  Championship  cosponsored  by MKF and Maykha  Group was  held at Aung San  Gymnasium  this  morning.  Present on  the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee  Minister  for  Sports  Brig-Gen  Thura  Aye  Myint,  Secretary-General of MOC Director General of Sports and  Physical Education  Department Col Thaung Htaik, Deputy  Director-General  Lt-Col Thein Aung, patrons of Myanmar  Women's  Sports  Federation,  President  of  MKF  and  executives Chairman of Maykha Group Dr Ye Naing Win and  officials, guests and spectators.

After  the  final  matches,  Daw L  Khun  Yi  of  MWSF,  Executive  of MKF U Ye Tun,  Patron  of MWSF  Daw Ni Ni  Tin,  Vice-President of MKF U Zaw Min.  Patrons of MWSF  Daw  Aye  Aye  and  Daw  Khin  Thein  Yi and  officials  presented prizes to the winners.

Then,  President  U Khin Maung Tun  presented  the best  player awards in women's and men's Khata event to Mi Mi  Kyaw  (CPT)  and  Min  Aye  (Industry-2).  Afterwards,  Director General Col Thaung Htaik presented best player  awards in women's and men's  Kumite  event to Ma Yi Win  Aung  (Forestry)  and Win Lwin Oo  (Defence).  Minister  Brig-Gen  Thura  Aye  Myint  presented  championship  trophies to Yangon City Development  Committee  women's  team and Ministry of Defence men's team.


(16) Writers honoured

YANGON, 30 May-A  ceremony to honour  writers who wrote  about departments and enterprises under the Ministry of  Transport, was held at the meeting hall of the ministry  on  Merchant  Street  at 1 pm  today.  Present  on  the  occasion were Minister for Transport  Maj-Gen Hla Myint  Swe,  Deputy  Ministers  Brig-Gen  Kyaw  Myint and U Pe  Than,  heads  of  departments,  advisers,  writers  and  officials.  Minister  Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe spoke words  of thanks and  presented  the gifts to the writers.  On  behalf of the writers,  Deputy Chief  Editor  (Retd) of  Myawady Literature House U Hla Kywe (Tekkatho Hla Kywe)  spoke words of thanks.

(17) Minister inspects Cardiac Unit of YGH

YANGON, 30  May-Minister  for Health  Maj-Gen Ket Sein,  accompanied  by  Deputy  Minister  Dr  Mya  Oo  and  departmental  heads,  arrived  at the  Cardiac  Unit of  Yangon General Hospital on Bogyoke Aung San Street this  morning.

Minister inspected Cardiac  Catheterization  Laboratory  where Medical  Superintendent  Dr Teik Wan, Professor U  Aung,  Professor  U  Khin  Maung  Aye  and  Manager  of  Shimadzu Co Ltd Mr Okada  reported on  installation  of  laboratory apparatus.

Then, the Minister and party inspected  preparations of  the special room at the unit.  Director-General  Dr Wan  Maung and officials  reported on the preparation  work.  Later, the Minister gave necessary  instruction  to the  officials.


(18)  Ministers  inspect  Myodaw  Farm and  Recreation  Centre in Taikkyi

YANGON, 30 May-Minister for Home Affairs Cot Tin Hlaing  and Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe  accompanied  by  leader  of  Agriculture  Services  Director-General  U Kyaw Tun of Prisons  Department and  party arrived at Myodaw Farm and  Recreation  Centre in  Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division this mornings.

Then, the ministers  proceeded to Uto Agricultural Camp  and inspected the building for  machinery,  breeding of  fish,  construction  of research  centre,  sluice gate,  golf course,  harvesting  of summer paddy and ploughing  for monsoon paddy and  construction  of Insu reservoir.  At the Club House, Mayor U Ko Lay explained cultivation  of  kitchen  crops,  agriculture  and  breeding  tasks  carried out by YCDC.

(19) Heroin seized in Kutkai

YANGON, 30 May- A combined team  comprising  members of  local  intelligence  unit  and  Myanmar  Police  Force,  acting on  information,  searched the house of Kyin Su,  son of U Chauk Far, No 8/91, Ward 3, Kutkai, Shan State  (  North  )on 21  May.  The  authorities  arrested  him  together  with 0.015  kilo of  heroin.  Action is being  taken  against  him  under  the  Narcotic  Drugs  and  Psychotropic Subs stances Law.


(20) Drug trafficker gets 5 years

YANGON,  30 May-  Members  of Lashio  Township  Myanmar  Police Force, acting on information, searched Kin Sone,  30, son of U Yu Ohn, of Ward 2, Lashio,  on 2  December  1998 and seized 0.00025 kilo of heroin from him.  On 10  February  1959, he was  sentenced  by  Lashio  Township  Court to three years' imprisonment and under Section 15  of Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic  Substances Law and  five years' imprisonment under Section 16 of the law to  serve concurrently.


(21)  21 Myittha  Township  NLD members  resign of own  accord

YANGON, 30  May-Twenty-one  members  resigned  from the  National  League for  Democracy  of  Myittha  Township,  Mandalay  Division.  Twenty-one  members  of  Myittha  Township NLD,  Mandalay  Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending  letters of resignation  to Myittha  Township  Multiparty  Democracy  General  Election  Sub  commission and the party  concerned on 28 March 2000 as  they no longer wished to participate in party  politics  of NLD.
