( 1 ) Minister attends opening of workshop on cultivation  of kitchen crops

YANGON, 22 May - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin attended the opening  ceremony of the workshop on cultivation of kitchen crops at the Central Agriculture Research and  Training Centre in Zayatkwin Village, Hlegu Township, this morning. The minister called on those  present to discuss matters related to development of national economy based on agriculture, successful  implementation of three objectives laid down for the agriculture sector by the Ministry of Agriculture
and Irrigation, efforts to achieve rice surplus, production of sufficient edible oil, cultivation of pulses and beans, industrial crops, sugar-cane, cotton and basic kitchen Cops, the undertaking of agriculture  work from a manageable scale up to a commercial scale and production work by use of technology and  through research. Then, the minister and the deputy minister went to Vegetable and Fruit Research and
Development Centre near Yemon Village in Hlegu Township. Officials reported on research of crops,  vegetables and fruits and pest control. The minister gave instructions on the work. Then, the minister  inspected the functions of the Centre, and led instructions.


( 2 ) Minister inspects factories of Myanma Pharmaceutical  Industries

    YANGON, 22 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Kyaw Win and departmental heads, arrived at Raw Materials Factory for soap production on  Bayintnaung Road in Ward 4 of Hline Township this morning.

The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected production, environs of the factory and oil  tanks He gave instructions on cultivation for kitchen crops in vacant land and boosting fish breeding.  Then, the minister and party proceeded to No 2 Soap Factory on Insein Road in Hline Township and  inspected production, packaging and raw oil drums. The minister inspected tasks of research and  quality inspection and gave instructions on work. In the meeting hall of the factory, the minister made
an assessment of the weak and strong points of the factory and gave necessary instructions.


( 3 ) Minister receives Japanese and Chinese guests

YANGON, 22 May- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Managing Director of Nichimen  Corporation of Japan based in Yangon Mr Kazuo Susa and party at his office at 11 am and Chairman of  Tianjin Machinery Imp and Exp Corporation (Group) Mr Sunjin Rong and party at 3 pm respectively.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Ministers for Industry- 1 Brig-Gen Than Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw  Win, the Directors General and Managing Directors of the departments and enterprises under the  ministry and head of office U Myint Swe.

( 4 ) Minister for Mines meets Chairman of Ivanhoe  Myanmar Holdings Co Ltd

YANGON, 22 May-Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint met Chairman Mr Robert M Friedland of  Ivanhoe Myanmar Holdings co Ltd implementing copper project in Monywa at his office this afternoon.  They discussed joint venture production, future tasks to be implemented and prospects. Present on the
occasion were Deputy Minister U Myint Thein and officials.


( 5 ) Ambassador U Tin Soe presents credentials to  President of Russian Federation

YANGON, 23 May-U Tin Soe, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar  to the Russian Federations presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin,  President of the Russian Federation, on 15 May 2000, in Moscow.


( 6 ) Ambassador U Kyar Nyo Chit Pe presents credentials  to Yugoslav President

YANGON, 23 May-U Kyar Nyo Chit Pe, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of  Myanmar to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr  Slobodan Milosevic, President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on 12 May 2000, in Belgrade.


( 7 ) Minister meets Indian trade delegation

YANGON, 22 May-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Indian trade  delegation of Indo-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industries at his office this afternoon. Also  present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung and directors general and managing directors of  departments and enterprises.

( 8 ) National Planning Department holds first work coord meeting

YANGON, 22 May-The National Planning Department under the Ministry of National Planning and  Economic Development held its first four-monthly work coordination meeting for Year 2000 in the  meeting hall of the National Archives Department on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road here this morning. The  minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha said that to implement policies  and plans of the State and the government employees need to digest the objectives and policies of the
State and to work in accord with the objectives and policies of the State. The employees of the Ministry of National Planning Economic Development need to know economic objectives of the State as the  ministry is concerned with the economy of the State. As this year is the last year of the five-year plan,  the government has laid down the targets, and employees need to work, keeping these targets in mind.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.


( 9 ) Departmental Procedure Course No 8 opens

YANGON, 22 Mayan mental Procedure Course No 8 of Ministry of Commerce opened at Border Trade  Department on Bo Sun Pat Road this morning. The minister said the government is making endeavours  for economic development of the nation, and it also gives encouragement to development of economic  undertakings of private entrepreneurs. He spoke of the need for service personnel to be efficient in their
work and to possess good moral character. The four-week course is being attended by 54 trainees.


(10) Refresher Course for JE 2 (Civil), Technician  Grade-3 Course open

YANGON, 22 May-A ceremony to open the Refresher Course for Junior Engineer-2 (Civil) and  Technician Grade 3 Course of Public Works was held at the Central Training School of the Ministry of  Construction in Thuwunna this afternoon. The minister gave a speech. Then, the minister and deputy  ministers met the trainees. Altogether 37 trainees are attending the Refresher Course for Junior Engineer-2 (Civil) and 97 the Technician Grade 3 Course.

(11) Director-General of Myanma Hotels and Tourism  Services receives mission of ADB

YANGON, 22 May-Director-General of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services U Khin Maung Latt  received mission of Asian Development Bank led by Dr Myo Thant his office this after noon. Also  present at the call were Managing Director of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services U Kyi Tun and  officials.


(12) Auditor-General s Office holds first four-monthly  coord meeting

YANGON, 22 May-The first four-monthly coordination meeting for year 2000 of State and Division  Auditors was held at the Auditor General s Office this morning. On behalf of the Auditor-General,  Deputy Auditor-General U Khin Win made a speech on inspection matters. Then, State and Division  auditors reported on situation of inspection, strength of the staff, staff welfare programme, plot for  construction of the office and progress in construction of the building. Later, on behalf of the Auditor-
General, the Deputy Auditor-General gave the concluding remarks.


(13) Minister receives foreign visitors

YANGON, 22 May-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein received  officials of First International co Ltd. of Republic of Korea at his office at noon today and Ambassador  of the People s Republic of Bangladesh at 3 pm respectively. Also present at the calls were Deputy  Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, the Directors-General and Managing Directors of
departments and enterprises under the Ministry, the head of office and officials.

(14) Overseas Employment Guideline Paining Course  No 4/2000 opened

YANGON, 22 May - Overseas Employment Guideline Training Course No 4/2000 sponsored by the  Ministry of Labour was opened at Pinion Hall of the Labour Department in Dagon Myothit (North).  Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe addressed the opening ceremony. In conclusion, the minister  urged all to work hard, to be loyal to the State and the people and to observe discipline.


(15) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 22 May-The National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall  of NCCC Office at 2 pm today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin,  Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members. Chairman Maj-Gen  Saw Lwin made a speech at the meeting. National Convention Convening Work Committee and National
Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters related to the National Convention, and members of National Convention Convening; Commission took part in the discussion. Then, the  chairman discussed the reports, and the meeting ended with concluding remarks by the chairman.


(16) Counselling Centre of Yangon South District opened

YANGON, 22 May-A ceremony to open Counselling Centre of Yangon South District organized by  Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Group of Yangon Division  Working Committee for Women s Affairs was held at Yangon South District Peace and Development  Council Office at the junction of Kyaikkhauk Pagoda Road and Thanlyin Minkyaung Road in Thanlyin
Township this morning. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Daw Marlar Tint formally unveiled the signboard  of the Counselling Centre. Members of Myanmar National Committee for Women s Affairs and guests  inspected the centre. Leader of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and  Rehabilitation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe spoke on the occasion. Daw Marlar Tint Resented K 200,000
donated by Yangon Division Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation to leader of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and  Rehabilitation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe. Officials accepted the donation!

Two Myanmar chess players leave for Vietnam

YANGON, 22 May- Myanmar selected chess players international master Myo Naing and champion Win Zaw Tun left here by air for participate in Asia zone chess qualifying for Year 2000 World Chess  Championship to be held in Vietnam from 21 to 30 May.

MTB Golden Belt Championship to be held

YANGON, 22 May-The Myanma Traditional Boxing Golden Belt Championship for year 2000 jointly sponsored by Myanmar Traditional Sports Federation and Sports and Physical Education Department will be held at Sepak Takraw Pitch in Thuwunna, beginning 3 June. The trials and quarterfinals will be held on 3 and 4 June, and semi-finals on 17 and 18 June.

Victorious Myanma disabled athletes arrive back

YANGON, 22 May-Victorious Myanma sports contingent led by Chairman of Myanma Disabled Sports Federation Col Aung Thein, who participated in the 10th Kuala Lumpur Disabled Sports Contest and 1st ASEAN Disabled Sports Meet held in Malaysia from 13 to 21 May, arrived back here by air yesterday evenings.


(18) Over 90,000 voters of Mahlaing Township unanimously  submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 22 May-Over 90,000 voters from Mahlaing Township Constituencies-1 and 2, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies held in 10 venues in the township on 10 April. A total of 2,511 people from five village-tracts at tended the rally in Hsedo Village.  They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and
petitioned for dissolving NLD, and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Than Tun.

Similarly, 2,000 people from four village-tracts rallied in Hsetkhingyi Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD, and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Than Tun.

A similar ceremony was attended by 3,001 people from six village-tracts in Kugyigon Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD, and representatives of respective village-tracts presented Petitions sinned by the people to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy Genera1 Election Sub-commission U Tin Maung Soe. A similar rally was attended by 3,050
people from six village-tracts in Leyagaung Village.

They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Maung Soe. A total of 5,732 people from four village-tracts and two wards in Kyauktan Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions
signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U San Thein.

Altogether 3,527 people from five village-tracts attended the rally in Ngagwa Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD and representatives of respective village- tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U San Thein. Likewise, 2,115 people from six village-tracts and two wards rallied in Pan-aing Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving
NLD and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission.

A similar rally was attended by 3,500 people from four village-tracts .in Kywegyan Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Hla Kyaw. A similar ceremony was attended by 3,050
People from. seven village-tracts in Hnawgan Village.

They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Thaung. A total of 2,200 people from three village-tracts in Kyatbyu Village. They expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving NLD and representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the
people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Thaung. The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan  Our Three Main National Causes . There are 106,917 people,. who can vote, in Mahlaing Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 91,709 people or 84.84 per cent.

(19) 30 Mingin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 May-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingin Township, Sagaing Division. Thirty members of Mingin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party Concerned on 14 September 1999 as they no longer Wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(20) Man gets 6 years  imprisonment for possession of drugs

YANGON, 22 May-The Monyin Township Court passed a sentence of six years' imprisonment on a drug offence on 27 January.  Regional Police Force members acting on information searched Po Pya (a) Myo Myint of Ywathit Village, Monyin Township, who was in a car with number plate La/ 708 at the toll gate and found 0.0005 kilo of heroin from him on 23-11-98.
