(1) Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida titles recipient Sayadaws honoured

YANGON, 21 May - A ceremony to honour Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida titles recipient Sayadaws a Ashin Silakkhandabhivamsa, and Ashin Vamsapalalankara and outstanding members of the Sangha who passed in the 52nd Sacred Tipitakadhara Selection Examination was held at Tipitaka Kyaungdawgyi at No 12 on Sagawa Street in Dagon Township this afternoon, attended by State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe.

Then, Chairman of Tipitakanikaya Sasanapyu Upahtaka Committee Ambassador U Aye Pe (Retired) supplicated on matters related to the ceremony. Chairman of the Administrative Committee for holding the ceremony to honour Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida titles recipient Sayadaws Thiha Thudhamma Manijotadhara Hsinmin U Tin Shwe supplicated on arrangements for the ceremony. Dhammasariya U Tin Shwe (Maubin) read the paper on honoring the Sayadaws. Members of entertainment group of Tipitakanikaya Sasanapyu Upahtaka Committee recited the verses and Dhamma songs.

The Secretary-1 and wife presented offertories to Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida titles recipient Sayadaws Ashin Silakkhandabhivamsa and Ashin Vamsapalalankara and Tipitakadhara title recipient Sayadaw Ashin Gandamalalankara. Afterwards, Ministers and well-wishers presented alms to members of the Sangha. Then, Agga Maha Pandita Palithiyawmani Wadanthaka (BA) Bhamo Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kuma-rabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.


(2) Secretary-1 and family offer alms to members of Sangha and nuns

YANGON, 21 May Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr. Daw Khin Win Shwe presented offertories to members of the Sangha and nuns who are attending the Dhammasariya Course at Aungmyaybodhi Yeiktha Alodawpyi Kyaungtaik on Tamwaylay Pinshwenyaung Street in Tamway Township at 4 pm today.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr. Daw Khin Win Shwe paid obeisance to Mandalay Masoeyein Taikthit Dhamma Thitagukyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sucittabhivamsa at Bodhithukha Kyaunghsaung.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe paid obeisance to members of the Sangha and nuns who are attending the Dhammacariya Course and presented offertories to members of the Sangha and nuns.


(3) Secretary-1  attends opening of Cyber English Course

YANGON, 21 May-Cyber English Course jointly organized by Centre for Human Resources Development of Yangon Institute of Education and Myanmar-New Zealand Education. Centre opened at Cyber English Centre hall of the Yangon Institute of Education this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Chairman of Centre for Human Resources Development of Yangon Institute of Education Rector U Han Tin said Cyber English Course means getting things done effectively and accurately with the use of multimedia equipment such as computers, visual presenters, front projectors, TV and video and audio cassettes. Then, Vice-President of Dyned Company of USA Mr Nick Randall explained matters related to effective methods of teaching English. Managing Director of Myanmar-New Zealand Education Centre U Dennis Win Thein said that the present course is an international level one opened in cooperation with technology universities from New Zealand. For the first phase, measures have been taken to promote proficiency in English. Then, other courses at various levels will be opened.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the training hall. Altogether 166 trainees are attending the 10-week course.

(4) Over 300 multimedia teaching centres have been opened Botahtaung BEMS No 2 gets multimedia teaching centre

YANGON, 21 May-The multimedia teaching centre of No 2 Basic Education Middle School in Botahtaung Township opened at the school this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. He then sprinkled scented water on the stone plaque. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the skill demonstration of playing musical instrument and Myanma Thaing.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected video-aided teaching room, computer-aided instruction room, interactive learning room, prayer hall, computer application room, printed media room, art studio and drawing room. Chairman of the school board of trustees Major Tin Maung Lwin reported on renovation of school buildings and efforts for the opening of the multimedia teaching centre. The Secretary-1 presented teaching aid video and cassette tapes to Headmistress Daw Khin Ma Kyu. The Secretary-1 , Minister U Than Aung, and Minister Lt- Gen Tin Ngwe accepted the donations.

The Secretary-1 expressed systematic preparation of the centre and systematic training under the teachers. .Then the Secretary-1 signed in the records book of the school.  Headmistress Daw Khin Ma Kyu presented commemorative gifts to the Secretary-1 and party. The Secretary-1 had photo taken together with members of the school board of trustees, member of Present- Teacher Association, well-wishers, teachers and students.


(5) Secretary-2 inspects construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge

YANGON, 21 May-The Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung pa, and officials. arrived at the construction site of Maha Bandoola Bridge, at 9 am today. In the briefing hall, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with officials and then inspected the project. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on early completion of the bridge, meeting set standards and worksite safety. Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa reported on extension of approach road and progress of tarring. The Secretary-2 provided necessary instructions. The six-lane bridge is 3,643.33 feet long.


(6) Secretary-2 inspects tax-free markets of YCDC

YANGON, 21 May - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected tax-free markets here this morning. Accompanied by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein Vice-Chair and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the tax-free market of Yangon City Development Committee at the corner of Hanthawady Road and Kyundaw Street in Kamayut Township at 7 am today. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo met officials at the market. He spoke of the need to achieve success of tax- frees markets.

(7) Illegal overseas communications exposed

YANGON, 21 May Myanma Posts and Telecommunications is seeing to it that communications among national people and entrepreneurs at home and abroad are easy and smooth. However, as authorities were informed of the fact that some unscrupulous persons were illegally carrying out overseas communications work after installing a satellite dish by use of sophisticated communications systems, an inquiry was made into that matter, and consequently, Indonesian .Mr Iran Cedar was caught with 15 communication devices including the US-made satellite dish installed and used at the Asia Plaza Hotel.

MR Iran Cedar, together with Filipino MR Jayvee (a) Shahjib Robert O Sencio, arrived in Myanmar in April 2000, hired a room at the Asia Plaza Hotel under the pretext of opening a company office. American MR Jeffry Craing Lesuer sent by MR Mike Butler from the US also arrived in Yangon on 13-4-2000, bringing in communication devices. He left Myanmar on 18-4-2000 after installing communication devices at room No 727 of the Asia Plaza Hotel. MR Iran continued to stay at Room NO 613 of the Asia Plaza Hotel and MR Jayvee at the Traders Hotel. Then, MR Jayvee employed Electric Engineer of the Asia Plaza Hotel U Myat Thu at US $ 100 a month and electrician technician Kyaw Win Hlaing at US $ 50 a month and arranged for illegal overseas communications.

Then, he left for Thailand on 15-42000. MR Iran and two Myanmars connected the satellite dish installed on the eighth floor of the Asia Plaza Hotel and directed towards Thai communication satellite named Inmarse over the Indian Ocean with ten auto-telephone lines and five extensions of the keyboard (PABX) hired by the Asia Plaza Hotel. And they illegally carried out local and overseas communications without using the communication link of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications.

That work is set up by American MR Mike Butler in Los Angeles of the US, and MR Jayvee is employed as a regional manager of South-East Asia. MR Jayvee got MR Iran to learn in Bangkok how to operate communication devices, and employed him at US $ l,000 a month. Then, he arranged to carry out communication work illegally in Myanmar. MR Iran, after installing the cables of communication devices in the office of the Asia Plaza Hotel, informed the control station of MR Mike Butler in the US. By the computer programme of that control station, the communications from the office of the Asia Plaza Hotel were controlled. The communication devices installed at the Asia Plaza Hotel are worth about US $ 100,000.

When two Myanmars can operate these devices skillfully, Mr Irawan will leave for Thailand. Mr Mike and group conducted local and overseas communications illegally not only in Myanmar but also in Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Thailand, through the satellites they hired without using the communication links of the respective nations. These nations except Thailand did not give permission, and closed down their work. Action will be taken according to law against illegal local and overseas communications by use of satellite communications equipment.


(8) Myanmar delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 21 May-A delegation comprising two experts from Ministry of Live stock and Fisheries, Chairman U Htay Myint and five members of Myanmar Fisheries Federation, two officers of South-West Command and three prawn breeding entrepreneurs, under the sponsorship of C P. Group of C P. Live stock Co Ltd. left here far Thailand by air this morning to study prawn breeding places in Thailand.


(9) Myanmar youth beat Chinese youth 3-0

YANGON, 21 May Under the arrangement of promoting friendly relations between the Union of Myanmar and the People s Republic of China, the second time Myanmar-Chinese youth soccer friendly was held at Bago Division sports ground in Bago Township this evening. In the friendly match, Myanmar youth beat Chinese youth 3-0.

(10) Over 1.8m voters of 17 townships in Ayeyawady Division  unanimously submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 21 May Voters from Constituency-1 and Constituency-2 in 17 townships of five districts, Ayeyawady Division, unanimously expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies held in 17 places on 11 April. Altogether 81,617 voters attended the rally in Thabaung Township. Out of 81,435 eligible voters of Thabaung Township Constituencies-1, 2, 32,355 or 39.37 per cent voted for NLD in 1 son Election. At the rally, 81,617 people or 83.14% out of 98,173 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

A total of 125,052 people attended the rally in Ngaputaw Township. Out of 149,090 eligible voters of .Ngaputaw Township Constituency-1, and 2, 59,404 or 39.84 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, 125,052 people or 68.89 per cent among 181,520 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

Similarly, 91,607 people attended the rally in Kyaunggon Township. Out of 80,366 voters of Kyaunggon Township Constituency-1 and 2, 34,939 or 43.47 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, 91,607 people or 89.10 per cent among 102,814 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

A similar rally was attended by 183,850 people in Hinthada Township. Out of 205,200 voters of Hinthada Township Constituency- 1 and 2, 88,237 or 42.58 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, 183,850 people or 70.85 per cent among 262,000 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

A similar rally was attended by 88,911 people in Zalun Township. Out of 109,937 voters of Zalun Township Constituency-1 and 2, 51,007 or 46.46 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, 88,911 people or 65.59% among 127,764 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

A total of 53,488 people rallied in Laymyethna Township. Out of 63,102 voters of Laymyathna Township Constituency-land 2, 31,685 or 50.21% voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally,  53,488 people or 65.75 per cent among 81,352 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

Altogether 52,805 people rallied in Kyangin Township. Out of 61,641 voters of Kyangin Township Constituency-land 2,27,147 or 44.04 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally,52,805 people or 99.82 per cent among 52,895 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.

A similar ceremony was attended by 107,332 people rallied in Ingapu Township. Out of 140,380 voters of Ingapu Township Constituency-land 2,55,350 or 39.45 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the ceremony 107,332 people or 76.46 Per cent among 141,200 peoples of the township expressed no support for NLD and signer the petitions for dissolving it .

Similarly, a rally was attended by 127,651 people in Myaungmya Township. Out of 171,283 voters of Myaungmya Township Constituency1 and 2 and 54,171 or 31.63% voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, 127,851 people or 60.66% among 210,769 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed petitions for dissolving it. A total of 86,400 people rallied in Einme Township. Out of 89,965 voters of Einme Township Constituency-land 2, 39,495 or 43.9 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally,  86,400 people or 79.96 per cent among 124,580 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it. A total of 144,664 people rallied in Wakema Township.

Out of 152,321 voters of Wakema Township Constituency-1 and 2, 44,488 or 29.21 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, l 44,664 people or 78.97 per cent among 183,193 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it .

Likewise, 109,351 people rallied in Labutta Township. Out of 147,242 voters of Labutta Township Constituency-1 and 2, 43,159 or 29.3 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally, 109,351 people or 62.31 per cent among 175,506 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it. A similar ceremony was attended by 141,800 in Maubin Township Constituency-1 and 2, 49,696 or 31.37 per cent voted for NLD in the Election.

At  the ceremony, 141,800 people or 73.68 per cent among 192,445 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it. A similar rally was attended by 105,934 in Nyaungdon Township. Out of 103,405 voters of Nyaungdon Township Constituency-1 and 2, 32,753 or 31.67 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally,  105,934 people or 81.87 per cent among 129,389 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it. Likewise, 99,483 people rallied in Pyapon Township. Out of 101,182 voters of Pyapon Township Constituency-1 and 2,40,231 or 39.76 per cent voted for NLD in the Election.

At the rally,  99,48.3 people or 75.47 per cent among 131,826 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it. A total of 166,475 people rallied in Bogale Township. Out of 173,562 voters of Bogale Township Constituency-1 and 2,48,212 or 27.78 per cent voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally,  166,475 people or 79.08 per cent among 227,809 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for,  dissolving it. Altogether 8.2,765 people rallied in Dedaye Township. Out of 100,490 voters of Dedaye Township, Constituency-1 and 2,3S,565 or 37.38% voted for NLD in the Election. At the rally,  82,765 people or 65.57 No among 126,211 people of the township expressed no support for NLD and signed petitions for dissolving it. A total of 1,849, 383 voters of 1,296 villages in 17 township, Ayeyawady Division, simultaneously expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.


(11) 52 Mingaladon NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 21 May-Fifty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division. Fifty-two members of Mingaladon Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingaladon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
