( 1 ) Outstanding members of the Sangha in 52nd Sacred Tipitakadhara Selection Examination honoured

YANGON, 20 May - A ceremony to honour the outstanding members of the Sangha in the 52nd Sacred Tipitakadhara Selection Examination was held at Maha Pasana Cave, Kaba Aye, this morning. - Vice-Chairman of the state and peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San attended the ceremony and presented the certificate and title of  Tipitakadhara to Venerable Ashin Silakkhandabhivamsa .

Also present were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee led by Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee AbhidhaJa Maha  Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Koehsaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamajotika Magway Maha Withuta Yamataik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara, Tipitakadhara Ovadacariya Sayadaws, Tipitakadhara Dhammabandagarika Sayadaws, Sayadaws and outstanding members of the Sangha in the 52nd Sacred Tipitakadhara Selection Examination, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife,  Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife members of the State Peace and Development Council, the deputy prime ministers, the ministers, and Minister of Religious Affairs, person of religious association and guest.

Master of ceremonies Director-General of the Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint read out the agenda of the ceremony. Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamajotika Bhaddanta Kumara read out the Ovadakatha of the Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee.

 In the Ovadakatha, the Chairman Sayadaw said that the delight of members of the Sangha led by the member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and the laity led by the Government knows no bounds due to emergence of 48 outstanding members of the Sangha including Tipitakakovida Tipitakadhara title recipients in the 52nd Sacred Tipitakadhara Selection Examination; and it is encouraging to note the flourishing of Pariyatti Sasana in Myanmar. Then, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin supplicated on matters related to the ceremony.
The minister said that he was very delighted to hear the news of emergence of two Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title recipients and one Tipitakadhara title recipient.

The minister also said that two Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title recipients who have got through both oral and written portions in the 52nd Sacred Tipitakadhara Selection Examination are Venerable Ashin Silakkhandabhivamsa (age 37, Vasa 17) and Venerable Ashin Vamsapalalankara (age 35, Vasa 15) who are residing at Tipitaka Nikaya Monastery, Moemeik Hillock, Mingun, and the Tipitakadhara title recipient who has got through the oral portions in the Examination is Venerable Ashin Gandhamalalankara (age 33, Vasa 13) who is residing at Tipitaka Kyaungdaw, Sagawa Street, Dagon Township, there are also other 48 outstanding members of the Sangha. General Maung Aye presented Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title and certificate to Ashin Silakhandabhivamsa of Mingun Tipitaka Nikaya Kyaungtaik in Sagaing.

The Secretary-1 presented Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title and certificate to Ashin Vamsapalalankara of Mingun Tipitaka Nikaya Kyaungtaik in Sagaing. The Secretary-3 presented Tipitakadhara title and certificate to Ashin Gandhamalalankara of Tipitaka Kyaungdaw on Sagawa Street in Dagon Township. Well-wishers presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. Well-wishers U Maung Sein , son U Hla Aung and family offered 'soon' to the members of the Sangha attended the ceremony.


( 2) Secretary-1 inspects construction project of Hline River Bridge ( Shwepyitha) and development undertakings  in Hlinethaya Township

  YANGON, 20 May-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the construction site of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) in Shwepyitha Township at 10.15 am today. At the briefing hall, Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Myint Lwin reported to the Secretary-l on facts about the construction project of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha), fixing of steel frame of the main bridge and construction of approach roads and Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw on construction of the four-lane road linking Shwepyitha Industrial Zone, Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) and Bayintnaung Road. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions and inspected progress of construction work for Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha). The bridge linking Shwepyitha and Hlinethaya townships in Yangon Division is 3,415 feet long. The motorway of the bridge is 52 feet wide and the bridge can bear up to 60-ton loads. It has two six-feet pedestrian lanes on either side of the bridge,, and clearance is 350 feet wide and 39.37 feet high. The employees of Public Works are making efforts for timely completion of the bridge. The Secretary-1 and party inspected construction of the four-lane road which is over two miles long linking Shwepyitha Industrial Zone, Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) and Bayintnaung Road. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party proceeded to Administrative Committee Office of Hlinethaya City of Industry.


( 3 )  Newly-built Kungyangon Sluice Gate inaugurated in Yangon South District

YANGON, 20 May- Newly-built Kungyangon Sluice Gate was inaugurated in Kungyangon Township, Yangon South District, this morning, and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony. To attend the opening ceremony of the sluice gate built by Irrigation Department and officials.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo made a speech on the occasion. Reclaiming wetlands in Kungyangon region is induced in the project of reclaiming vacant, virgin and fallow lands and wetlands in Yangon Division, and sluice gates and canals are being built to transform the wetlands into cultivated lands.  As the present sluice gate, Kabing, Kama Kalun, Tawkhayan and Khalauk Tayar sluice gates and four canals have been constructed between Letkhaik and Thakhut River in Kawmhu and Kungyangon, over 40,000 acres of farm land will be protected against floods.  In conclusion, the Secretary-2 urged local farmers to strive for development of agricultural undertakings with momentum and to maintain the sluice gate for long-term existence.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than made a speech. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin also spoke on the occasion, saying the present sluice gate is the 109th facility to be opened in the country, and 230 water pumping projects were implemented for agriculture. Minister Col Thein Nyunt then spoke. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin formally unveiled the stone plaque of the sluice gate and Director of Yangon Division ID U Tin Maung Win formally opened the sluice gate.  The Secretary-2 and party then inspected it. Kungyangon Sluice Gate was built on Kungyangon Creek to protect the region against floods, control the rainy water when water level of Toe River is low, and fully irrigate summer paddy fields. It has 15 valves, each 6 feet wide and 12 feet long, and two canals a 2,548-foot long canal and a 500-foot canal. It was built at a cost of K 180 million and will benefit 21,400 acres of cropland.


( 4 ) Voters of Meiktila Township unanimously submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 20 May-Voters of Meiktila Township Constituency-1 and Constituency-2, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned .for dissolving NLD at rallies in Alaiywa Village-tract on 23 May and Shande, Shawbyugan. Pyintha.  Ngayon, Shwesitthi, Mwe, Htamongan, Shamange and Yaywai village-tracts on 8 April. A total of 3,265 people from 11 village-tracts rallied in the sports ground of Alaiywa Village.

On behalf of the local people, farmer U Myint Aung of Alaivwa Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives of respective village tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyi Tun.  Similarly, 3,275 people from eight village-tracts rallied in the sports ground of Wayon Village. At Basic Education Middle School in Shwesitthi Village, 3,644 people from six village tracts attended the rally. Likewise, 4,302 people from six village-tracts rallied at Basic Education Middle School of Mwe Village. Similarly, the rally was attended by 3,150 people from seven village-tracts in the sports ground of Htamongan Village. A total of 3,000 people from five village-tracts rallied in the sports ground of Shamange Village Altogether 3,120 people from eight village-tracts rallied in the sports ground of Yaywai Village. All ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". There are 146,175 people, who can vote, in Meiktila Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 139,812 people or 95.64 per cent.
 


( 5 ) Remaining armed group members continue to exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 20 May - The State Peace and Development Council is building up national reconsolidation, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, for emergence of a modern and developed nation. After realizing the genuine goodwill and endeavours of the government and the fact that destructive do not benefit the country and the people at all and that they hamper regional development, armed groups, abandoning destructive acts which made them lag behind in development, are exchanging arms for peace individually. or in groups from 1 to 30 April.

In the region of North-West Command, Lt-Col Zar Hmone of GNA armed group, Captain San Ta Lone, Lt. Zon Oke, Cpl Hlanza Hoke, pvts Dar Hlyan, Ban Kyon Hlyan, Lin An, Nay Lin and Po Han together with one M-16, one M-21, one AK47, one Sten, one American-made pistol, one BA-91 hand grenade, eight magazines and 155 assorted rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace. In the region of Northeast Command, pvts Thaung Myint and Aung Myint of SURA armed group, together with one M-21, two grenades, 50 rounds of ammunition and one walkie-talkie, exchanged arms for peace. In the region of Eastern Command, Cpl Aik Tun and pvt Aung Sa of SURA armed group, together with one M16, two M-22s, three magazines and 81 rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace.

In the area of Triangle Region Command, pvt Aik Sa of SURA together with one M-22, one magazine, nine rounds of ammunition and pvts Thein Shwe, Ditee, Masaku, Deyal, Ah Chay, Kan Le. Kya La, Pukaw and Ya Par of Lahu armed group together with one M-20 pistol, five M-22s, nine magazines and 98 assorted rounds of ammunition exchanged arms for peace.  In the region of Southern Command, Lt Saw Pho Htoo of No 2 Company of KNU Brigade-2 and wife Naw Wi Pu, and their children Saw Thaw Thiwa, Saw Bugay, Saw Khi Thaw Pho, Naw Bwe Kalo Phaw, Cpl Saw Bwe Ta and wife Naw Munu and daughter Naw Bo Say and pvt Saw Chit Tun of KNU Brigade-2 Headquarters exchanged arms for peace. In the region of South East Command, pvt Ba Sein (a) Maung Tun of KNU Brigade-1, Sgt Saw Tha Galay (a) Pho Cho of battalion-16 under Brigade-6, Sgt Aung Win San of Company 2, administrative board member of KNU Brigade 7 Saw Aye Pe, pvt Gyo Zet, pvts Myint Thein and Maung Htwe of DO Battalion2 of KNU armed group, together with one .30 Carbine, two single-barrelled shotguns, one magazine, 10 cartridges and one BA-91 hand grenade, exchanged arms for peace.

In the region of Coastal Region Command, pvt Saw Kyaw Din and wife Naw Set Pho and son Saw Hta Naw Naw of KNU Brigade 4, together with two M-16s, one M22, two AK-47s, five assorted magazines, 100 rounds of ammunition, and pvt Saw Maw Yal and wife Naw Moe Ra and son Saw Phara Gyu and daughters Naw Pi Ne and Naw Phaw Lay, pvt Saw Saw Lin and wife Ma Ave Kyu and son Saw Hti Mu and daughter Ma Aye Pyu, pvt Saw Pho Khe and wife Naw Shi Na and son Saw He Paloke, pvt Saw Kyaw Aye and wife Naw Da Naw and daughter Naw Li Gyal, pvt Saw Ro Ro and wife Naw Ai Htoo and sons Saw Khe Htoo, Saw Khe Pho, Myo Min. Aung Than Aye and daughters Naw Ai Go Htoo and Naw Tali Htoo, together with one .22 automatic rifle and two rounds of ammunition, pvts Saw Kyi Lu and Saw Kan Pwint, Sgt Tun Shoin, pvts Saw Gyu Lay and Saw Maung Kauk, together with one .30 Carbine, two magazines and 26 cartridges, pvt Ka Naing and wife Ma Myint Win and daughter Thanda Aye, pvts Moe Gyo, Saw Shi, Saw Wa Kat and local pvt Saw Ka Khaw and wife Aye Nale and son Saw Pheik Htaret, Saw Paw Lu, sister Naw Phaw Say and niece Naw Kamu of DO battalion-7 of KNU armed group, together with one AK47, one magazine and seven rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace.  Officials of the respective military camps cordially welcomed 83 persons who exchanged arms for peace and attended to their needs and there are other armed group members who will exchange arms for peace.


( 6 ) Myanmar disabled athletes win 63 gold, 26 silver, 12 bronze

YANGON,20 May - The 10th Kuala Lumpur Sports Meet for Disabled and the First ASEAN Sports Meet for the Disabled took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 15 to 20 May. Athletes of Myanmar Sports Federation for the Disabled won 63 gold,, 26 sliver and 12 bronze in the sports meet from 15 to 18 May. Among these medals, Myanmar athletes won 49 gold, 20 silver and eight bronze medals in the Track and Field event which ended on 18 May. Myanmar team is still taking part in other sports events.


( 7 ) Illegal drug possessor gets six years

YANGON, 20 May Monyin Township Court handed down a sentence of six years' imprisonment on a drug possessor on 12  January 1999. The members of Monyin Police Force Station, acting on information, searched the farmhouse of Po Toke, 27, son of U Tun Yin, Bilu Village, Monyin Township, on 8 August 1998, and found him with 0.0004 kg of heroin. He was tried  under Section 15/16 (c) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to six years' imprisonment.


( 8 )  Heroin seized in Muse

YANGON, 20 May-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting near Fulilai Guesthouse, Kaung Mulwai ward; Muse, northern Shan State arrested Kya Shin (a) Ah Phint, son of U Lauk Yaw, who was staying at U La Wan's house as a tenant, together with 110 soap boxes of heroin weighing 2.015 kilos. Action has been taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


( 9 ) Man gets six years for possession of drugs

YANGON, 20 May-  Monyin Township Court handed down a sentence of six years' imprisonment on a man on 11 January 1999. Members of Monyin Township Police Force and Te'Pu Village Union Solidarity and Development Associations acting on information, searched the house of Win Oo, 31, son of U San Hla, Te'Pu Village, and uncovered 0.00025 kg of heroin at 9 pm on 21 October 1998. He was tried under Section 15/16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to six years.


( 10 )  22 Dawbon Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON,20 May-A ceremony to present 22 resignation letters of members of the National League for Democracy to Dawbon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission was held at Dawbon Township Peace and Development Council Office yesterday morning. Twenty-two members of Dawbon Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, collectively resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned and Dawbon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD. Members of Township NLD Executive Committee U Tin Ngwe, U Kyaw Myint and U Tin Ohn, on their behalf, explained the reason of resignation anti presented the resignation letters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Lwin.
