(1) Minister of Forestry holds meeting to coordinate implementation of plans for 2000-2001 financial year

  YANGON, 19 May-The Ministry of Forestry held a meeting to coordinate implementation of plans for 2000 2001 financial year at the Central Commercial Building of Myanma Timber Enterprise in Bahan Township this evening, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, advisers to the Ministry of Forestry, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, officials, Chairman of Forestry Products Joint Venture Corporation Ltd U Bo Ni and officials.  Then, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone reported to the Secretary-1 on progress of plans being implemented by the ministry and clans for 2000-2001 financial year including tasks for forest conservation, tasks for greening of dry zone and timber extraction. After giving remarks to the reports of the officials, Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address.

He urged officials to harmoniously strive for attaining the national goal which is emergence of a peaceful, tranquil, modern and developed nation, to achieve economic development of the nation with added momentum through the forest sector and make efforts to be able to implement the tasks for conserving forests and extending forests and at the same time to use the precious forest resources for the interest of the race and the country, to strive for development of wood-based industries for more foreign exchange earnings, and to make efforts to ensure temperate climate and maintain ecosystem of biodiversities.


( 2) Minister meets General Manager of MFPDC 

YANGON, 19 May-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met General Manager of Myanmar Fertilizer and Power Development Co (MFPDC) Mr Peter Longerich and party at his office at 3 pm today. They discussed mutual cooperation. Also present was Vice-Governor of the Central Banal of Myanmar U Than Lwin.


(3)  D-G of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism meets foreign visitors

YANGON, 19 May-Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, met Indochina Regional Director Mr Akio Fukawa of Index Worldwide Co Ltd in Tokyo, Japan at the Minister's office this afternoon. They cordially discussed matters relating to tourism promotion. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Director General-U Naing Bwa of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, General Manager U Htay Aung of Myanma Travels and Tourism Services and Managing Director Mr Soon Kau Yu of Index Worldwide Travels and Tours Co Ltd.


(4) Official leaves for Bangladesh

YANGON, 19 May-Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and members left here by air this morning for Bangladesh to attend the 29th Meeting of Board of Directors of Asian Clearing Union (ACU) to be held from 20 to 21 May in Dakha, Bangladesh. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, heads of departments, officials and their families.


(5) Entries invited for Photo Competition to mark Year 2000 World Environment Day

YANGON, 19 May-The Public Education Committee of National Commission for Environmental Affairs will sponsor the Photo Competition to mark the Year 2000 World Environment Day. The entry must not be smaller than the size of 8" by 10" and not forger than the size of 10" by 12". Anyone may send up to four entries to the competition. The entries are to be sent to Information and Public Relations Department (Photo Section), 22/24, Pansodan Street or Myanmar Photographic Society, 27/29, the first floor, 35th Street, not later than 26 May. Competitor is to send his CV together with entries to the department or the society. The entry must be own creation. (6) Central Food and Drug Supervisory Committee meets entrepreneurs

YANGON, 19 May-The Central Food and Drug Supervisory Committee met purified drinking water entrepreneurs in the meeting hall of the Food and Drug Administration on Minkyaung Street in Dagon Township this morning.  Present were Chairman of the Central Food and Drug Supervisory Committee Dr Wan Maung and members, chairmen of township food and drug supervisory committees from industrial zones in Yangon, 44 entrepreneurs and officials. Dr Wan Maung spoke and Director of the General Administration Department (Head Office) U Tin Hlaing discussed.


(7)  Myanmar Tourism Board holds coordination meeting

YANGON, 19 May-Under the guidance of the Tourism Development Management Committee, Myanmar Tourism Board of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism held first coordination meeting at the Traders Hotel this morning. Departmental officials, hoteliers and tour operators, officials of domestic and international airlines attended the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, the Director-General U Khin Maung Latt said senior leaders had given guidance to set up a tourism board. Now tourism season have passed and business was on the decline to some extent, he said. And the meeting discussed matters relating to formation of the committees, defining tasks, advertising of tourist destinations, transportation of domestic and international airways. It decided to hold the second coordination meeting during the first week of July.


(8)  Myanmar youth beat Chinese youth 1-0 in soccer friendly

YANGON, 19 May- Myanmar-China youth soccer match to promote friendship between Myanmar and the People's Republic of China was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 4 pm today. Before the match, the two teams took their designated places. President of MFF Cot Thaung Htaik and Counsellor of Chinese embassy Mr Tan Ying greeted the footballers. Leaders of the two teams exchanged commemorative pennants and had photo taken.  Myanmar Youth team beat Chinese youth team 1-0.


(9) Minister attends 13th communal ordination novitiation ceremony

YANGON, 19 May-The 13th communal ordination and novitiation ceremony of families of Customs Department of Ministry of Finance and Revenue was held at Mingun Tawya Kyaungtaik on Innyamyaing Road at 7.30 am today. Minister U Khin Maung Thein and officials of presented offertories to members of the Sangha.


( 10 )  5.95 kgs of raw opium seized in Kutkai Township

YANGON, 19 May-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, waiting near Kholon Village Kutkai Township, Shan State (North), stopped two men on 6 May 2000.  Meanwhile, one dropped his knapsack which contained 2.65 kgs in three packets of raw opium, and fled. The team seized the other one, ChaukTe, son of U Ywet Kyoun, Ward 7, Lashio, together with 3.3 kgs in three packets of raw opium. Action is being taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(11) Saw Tin Oo implicated in the siege of Myanmar embassy in Bangkok gets death sentence

YANGON 19 May-Saw Tin Oo involved in the siege of Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, was sentenced to death by Yangon East District Court yesterday under Section 122 (2) of the Penal Code. The authorities have been tracking down the terrorists who seized the embassy. On 1 March 2000, members of Defence Services Intelligence managed to arrest Saw Tin Oo, one of the terrorists who seized the embassy, in Myawady on his return to Myanmar from Thailand. Saw Tin Oo, son of U Htwe Maung of Kyonkhun Village, Kyain-seik-kyee Township, Kayin State, took to the jungle and joined No 6 Battalion of KNU insurgent group in 1985. In 1997, he lived in Maneeloy Refugee Camp opened in the territory of Thailand, and joined "God's Army" of KNU. On 1 September 1999, he also joined a terrorist group under the name of Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors (VBSW) headed by Johnnie. Saw Tin Oo, Baydar (a) Myint Thein, Maung Htwe, Than Lwin and El Wa (a) Than Naing took part in the siege of the embassy launched by the terrorist group led by Johnnie. With the arrangements of Johnnie, three AK-47s, one M-16, one .38 revolver, one .32 revolver, five grenades  and explosives which were 1 used in the siege of the embassy, were carried by car from Maneeloy Refugee Camp to Bangkok. Saw Tin Oo carried statements which would be released in the course of the siege.

At about 10 am on 1 October, the terrorist group got to the surrounding area of the Myanmar Embassy. Saw Tin Oo was not able to enter the embassy as he was a little late when the terrorists in two groups entered the embassy. When five terrorists including Johnnie were already inside the embassy, Saw Tin Oo was arrested by Thai police while he was trying to enter the embassy. The Immigration Department in Bangkok kept him in custody till February 2000.

According to the statement of Saw Tin Oo, VBSW and God's Army held a co ordination meeting to cooperate in conducting terrorist operations at Maneeloy Refugee Camp in September 1999. A decision to return to the camp by helicopter at the end of the embassy siege of the was made at the meeting. The terrorist operation was conducted only after two heliports had been built in advance near Kamapalaw close to the Thai-Myanmar border.  Johnnie took change of transport of arms and ammunition, and although there were seven checkpoints on the way from the refugee camp to Bangkok, he was not stopped for any check. Thai security unit members took the bag containing the statements from Saw Tin Oo and gave it to Johnnie and the group in the embassy. Thai Immigration detained Saw Tin Oo and then released him on 29 February. He was arrested by the authorities when he returned to the country together with Myanmars who worked in Thailand, through Myawady. Yangon East District Court passed death sentence for high treason under Section 122 (2) of Penal Code, three years' imprisonment under Section 17(1) of 1908 Unlawful Associations Act and five years' imprisonment under Section 13 (1) of 1947 Immigration Act.


(12) People of Wundwin Township unanimously submit petition for dissolving  pessimist NLD

YANGON, 19 May—The people from Wundwin Township Constituency-1 and Constituency 2, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for I Democracy and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies in Kukkokhahla, Kyaunggon, Naybugon, Daingkaunggon, NyaungU-phee, Peginkyaw, Shwedaung and Khingyi village-tracts on 7 April morning.

A total of 5,033 people from 10 village-tracts attended the rally in Kulekokhahla Village Basic Education Primary School.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Bala of Kukkokhahla Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission U San Shwe. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes".

Similarly, 4,800 people from 11 village-tracts amended the rally at the sports ground in Kyaunggon Village. On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Nu Tin of Taunghse Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Joint Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Aung Lwin.

The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes".  Altogether 5,215 people from seven village-tracts attended the rally in Naybugon Village Affiliated Basic Education High School.

On behalf of local people, farmer U Hmaw of Naybugon Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Thein Nyunt.

The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Likewise, 6,025 people from eight village-tracts attended the rally in Daingkaunggon Village Basic Education Middle School.

On behalf of attendance's, merchant U Yan Naing Swe of Daingkaunggon Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Saw Taw Nay Mu.

The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". A total of 4,070 people from seven village-tracts and three wards attended the rally in NyaungU-phee Village Basic Education Middle School.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Kyaw Aung of Ywashe Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Aung. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Likewise, 1,849 people from six village-tracts and three wards rallied in Peginkyaw Village Affiliated Basic Education High School.

On behalf of the local people, farmer U Chit Win of Peginkyaw Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Thet Mu. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes': A total of 3,735 people from 12 village-tracts rallied in the sports ground of Shwedaung Village.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Hla Maung of Shwedaung Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of respective village-tracts presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Thu. The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". I Altogether 5,650 people from seven village-tracts rallied in Khingyi Village Basic Education Middle School.  On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Mar Din of Khingyi Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.  Representatives of respective Villagetract presented petitions signed by the people to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Thein Swe. The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". There are 136,213 eligible voters in Wundwin Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 129,451 people or 95.03 per cent.


(13)  470 Thakayta Township NLD members collectively resign of own accord

YANGON, 19 May-A ceremony to present 470 resignation letters of the National League for Democracy to Thakayta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission was held at Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office this mowing. Four-hundred and seventy members of Thakayta Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, collectively resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned and Thakayta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD. Township NLD EC members U Kyin Maung, U Aung Win and U Nwe Oo, on behalf of them, explained the reason of resignation and presented the resignation letters to Chairman of Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission U Kyi Win..
