YANGON, 12 May- At the imitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau arrived here by Special Aircraft at 10 am today on a goodwill visit to the Union of Myanmar.

Visiting Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and members of the delegation were welcomed on arrival at the Yangon International Airport by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife, Member of the State Peace and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassador designate to-Vietnam U Khin Aung, and wife, Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, Acting Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Nepal Gen Satchit Shumshere JB Rana (Retd) and wife and Heads of Diplomatic Missions and UN Agencies in Yangon and their wives and Ambassador of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and wife, staff and families of the SRV Embassy. The distinguished guests were also welcomed there by school girls, chanting slogans hailing friendship between the two countries and waving the miniature flags of the two countries.

As the special aircraft carrying Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and party arrived at the airport at 10 am, Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department and SRV Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa boarded the aircraft and welcomed the guests. The visiting Prime Minister and wife were accorded a 19-gun salute. Two young ladies presented bouquets to the visiting Prime Minister and wife. The distinguished guests were then greeted by Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, and the Senior General presented his entourage to the visiting Prime Minister.

Next, the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Senior General proceeded to the saluting dais and took the salute of the Guard of Honor, while the State Band, played the national anthems of the two countries.  The visiting Prime Minister and the Senior General then inspected the Guard of Honor. The Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Senior General were greeted by the Acting Dean of Diplomatic Corps and diplomats, staff and families of the SRV Embassy. The distinguished guests, accompanied by the Senior General and Madame Than Shwe, proceeded to Seinle Kantha State House in a motorcade.

Along the road outside the airport and along University Avenue up to the entrance to the Seinle Kantha State House, members of Union  Solidarity and Development Association, teachers, students, members of Maternal arid Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, nurses and the public numbering over 7,500 wishing the guests and the Senior General and Madame Than Shwe good health and hailing Vietnam-Myanmar friendship.

Extending welcome to the visiting Prime Minister and party an archway at the entrance to the Yangon International Airport was put up with words in both Myanmar and English  Warm welcome to Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau  banner posted on Pyay Road at the entrance to the airport, at 7th Mile, at the entrance of Inya Road and at the entrance to the State House and flags of two countries were hoisted along the road from the airport, at the junction of Mayangon, Inya Lake embankment, at the junction of Kamayut, along University Avenue leading to Seinle Kantha State House, at Hanthawady Roundabout, U Wisara Roundabout and the People s Square.

The distinguished guests together with the Senior General and wife arrived at Seinle Kantha State State House at 10.30 am. Then, the Senior General and wife greeted the visiting Prime Minister and wife, and left- the State House.  Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau were accompanied by Mr Nguyen Dy Nien, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nguyen Sinh Hung, Minister for Finance, Mr Le Huy Ngo, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Nguyen Khoa Diem, Minister for Culture and Information and other high-level officials and businessmen.


(2) SRV Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai calls on Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe

YANGON, 12 May - Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai called on Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe at the Credentials Hall of the Pyithu Hluttaw at 2 pm today.  Also present at the call together with the Senior General were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassador -designate to Vietnam U Khin Aung,

( 3 ) Myanmar-Vietnam sign agreements

YANGON, 12 May -The Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam signed agreements at the Pyithu Hluttaw here this afternoon.

Minister for Finance and Revenue and his Vietnamese counterpart Mr Nguyen Sinh Hung signed the Agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income. Minister for Culture U Win Sein and Minister of Culture and Information of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Khoa Diem signed the Agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Cultural Cooperation. Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun and Deputy Minister of Plan and Investment of Vietnam Mr Lai Agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments.


(4) Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing  host banquet for Vietnamese Prime Minister and wife

YANGON, 12 May Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing hosted banquet in honour of Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and goodwill delegation, currently here on a goodwill visit, at Pyithu Hluttaw building on Pyay Road at 7 pm today.

The dinner was attended by Deputy Commander-in-Chief (army) Maung Aye and wife, Secretary-1 Lt Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Secretary-2 Lt Gen Tin Oo and wife, Secretary-3 Lt- Gen Win Myint and wife , Senior Tatmadaw officers,the Deputy Minister for Foreign

Affairs and wife, Myanmar Ambassador designate to Vietnam U Khin Aung and wife, Vietnamese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and wife and Vietnamese Embassy Myanmar economic entrepreneurs, Ambassadors of ASEAN member countries and their wives and special guests. State Band played the national anthems of Vietnam and Union of Myanmar. Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame toast to those present at the dinner. Before and during the dinner, the guests were entertained with songs by vocalists of Myanmar Athan modern music troupe.

After the dinner the guests were entrained with a programme of cultural dances in Thabin Hall. Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau presented a flower basket to artistes.


( 5 ) Vietnamese PM delegation visit Shwedagon

YANGON, 12 May-The visiting goodwill delegation led by Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau visited the Shwedagon Pagoda this evening. The guests first studied King Thayawady s Bell and visited Htidaw Pagoda.

They went around the pagoda and revered Yokepwadaw Tazaung, the reclining Buddha Image in the Tazaung of Shwegonmyint Sanay Aryondaw Wut Association, and Kassapa Buddha Image in Aryonkhan Tazaung at the Western Entrance. The visiting Prime Minister signed the visitors  book and made donations.

Ambassador of Vietnam Mr Nguyen DanB Khoa and embassy staff, visited the Mu!ti- purpose Building of Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Streets. Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained functions of MMCWA to the guests. After holding discussions on maternal and child welfare tasks of the two countries, they exchanged gifts. Madame Nguyen Thi Sau signed in the visitors  book and then went round the children s all-round development centre and domes- tic science training school of MMCWA.


( 6 ) Secretary-l and wife meet SRV Prime Minister and wife

YANGON, 12 May- Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe met Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau at Seinle Kantha State House at 11.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dy Nein, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and other high-level officials, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and wife, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassador-designate to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam U Khin Aung and wife and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.


( 7 ) Building of Danubyu-Taikkyi-Bago Road in progress

YANGON, 12 May - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected progress in building the Danubyu-Taikkyi-Bago Road linking Ayeyawady, Yangon and Bago Divisions today.

Accompanied by Col Khin Maung Myint of Directorate of Military Engineers, the commander inspected earth works along Danubyu-Taikkyi-Bago Road in Yangon North District.

On arrival at Mile Post 47 of the road, the commander and party were welcomed by Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station and officials. At the Taikkyi-Pugyi-Phaunggyi section of the road, the commander observed the completed earth road which is two miles and seven furlongs long and 40 feet wide. The commander spoke of the need to tar the road. Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party then arrived at the junction where Yangon-Bago Highway and Danubyu-Taikkyi-Bago Road meet. The commander urged the officials to strive for completion of the road in time.

Completion of the 63 mile long Danubyu-Taikkyi-Bago Road will ensure smooth and easy transport in linking Ayeyawady, Yangon and Bago Divisions. Construction of the road also ensures easy access to the villages along the road and helps develop them.


( 8 ) Minister meets communication officials

YANGON, 12 May-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin this morning met with officials who will attend the ministry s work coordination meeting at Mayangon Extemal Communication Centre.

The minister urged them to prevent illegal engagement of outsiders in communication services. The chief engineer of Overseas Communication Division explained international satellite communication system of Myanmar, illegal engagement of outsiders in international telephone and E-mail communication systems and equipment and means used by them and arrangements being made to fulfill internal communication requirements of banks and oil and mineral exploration companies. The chief engineer of Yangon Auto-Exchange explained installation of S-12 digital auto-phone system in Insein and its capacity. The minister and party then inspected laying of foundation to build a tower for GSM cellular telephone system. .


(9) Phado Aung San and party make donation to YGH

YANGON, 12 May- A ceremony to donate K 150,000 to Yangon General Hospital was held at the hospital this morning.

Phado Aung San, leader of the group which exchanged arms for peace, explained the purpose of donation.

Then, Phado Aung San and party handed donation to Medical Superintendent of L Hospital Dr U Min Swe who presented a certificate of honour and expressed gratitude.


( 10 ) Minister receives foreign visitors

YANGON, 12 May-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Sales Director of ALCATEL-Malaysia Co Mr Christian Bejani and Commercial Counsellor of French Embassy to the Union of Myanmar Mr Jean Michel Lorne at his office 11 am today.


( 11 ) Imprisonment given to drug trafficker

YANGON, 12 May-The Court in Lashio passed a sentence of ten-year imprisonment on a drug trafficker on 11 January 1999. Lashio Police Force arrested Zaw Aung, 30 son of U Zaw Nan, Ward 5, Lashio, together with 0.0245 kilos of heroin on 26 November 1998. The court heard the case against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, Section 19 ( A).


( 12 ) 30 Kyaukse Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 12 May - Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division. Thirty members of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
