(1) Mandalay-Tagaung-Shwegu-Bhamo-Myitkyina  Union Highway inaugurated
 
YANGON, 11 May - Opening ceremonies of separate sections of Mandalay-Tagaung-Shwegu-Bhamo-Myitkyina Union Highway which passes through Mandalay Division, Sagaing Division, Shan State (North) and Kachin State were held at the separate sections today, attended by Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-l of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The ceremony to open Bhamo-Tagaung-Mandalay (Kachin State) section was held at the junction of  Bhamo and Mansi, Bhamo District, Kachin State, at 6.45 am. The Secretary- 1 addressed the ceremony.  Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chair man of Kachin State  Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, ministers,  national race leader of
Kachin State Special region U Za Khun Ting Ring and national race leader of Special Region-2 U Zaw Maing, Kachin State, district, township, ward and village and students and local people. In his address, the Secretary-l said;  Next, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun said that Mandalay-Tagaung-Bhamo- Myitkyina Union Highway linking Mandalay Division and Kachin State through Sagaing
Division on the eastern part of the Ayeyawady River, is 18 feet wide, and the earth embankment is 40 feet wide.

Afterward, Minister Maj-Saw Tun presented commemorative pennants to the Secretary-1 ,Commander Maj- Gen Kyaw Win and national race leaders U Za Khun Ting Ring and U Zaw Maing. Then, the Secretary-1 presented gifts to Deputy Superintending Engineer of Bhamo- Mansi Section Project U Soe Tint.

Commander Maj- Gen Kyaw Win and Minister Maj- Gen Saw Tun formally opened Bhamo- Tagaung - Mandalay Highway (Kachin State). After the ceremony , the Secretary-1 party proceeded to Shweli Bridge ( Ngaoh) Project.

The Secretary-1 formally drove a stake and a pile . Then the Secretary-1 and party sprinkled scented water over the pile and golden showers to make the successful completion of ceremony. In the project hall, The Secretary-1 gave instruction on implementation of the project. Then, Minister for Construction Maj- Gen Saw Tun said Shweli Bridge ( Ngaoh) will be 27050 foot-long reinforced type bridge with 12
piers. It will have a motor way , 28 feet wide, and two pedestrian lanes, each three feet wide on both sides. The bridge can bear 60 -ton loads. After that the Secretary-1 and party arrived at the branch road in Tagaung, Thabekkyin Township.

The ceremony to put the road section between Bhamo- Tagaung- Mandalay into service was held at 10 am with Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt in attendance. The Secretary-1 presented gifts to Senior Engineers U Aye Naing Tun of Bhamo- Tagaung- Mandalay Road Section Project.The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the stone plaque of the road section. In conjunction with the opening ceremony of the road section, a ceremony to launch operation of Ayeyaman Bus Line on the Mandalay- Tagaung-Bhamo route was held. Then, The secretary-1 and party arrived a Thabeikkyin ( 7-1/2 Mile) in Thabeikkyi where they attended the opening ceremony of Tagaung-Bhamo Road section. Afterwards, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave, a speech. Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the road section.

There have been two highways, Shwebo-Myitkyina Highway on the western bank of Ayeyawady and Mandalay-Thabeikkyin-Mogok-Momeik-Bhamo-Myitkyina Highway. Under the guidance of Senior General Than Shwe, the highways are to be extended to link Mandalay, Thabeikkyin, Tagaung, Shwegu, Bhamo, Myitkyina, passing through many villages on the western bank. Road sections between
Thabeikkyin, Tagaung, Shwegu and Bhamo were newly built so that a new high way will completely emerge.

A total of 122 bridges, 10 to 220 feet long, and 113 concrete pipe bridges were built on the highway.  Shweli Bridge (Ngaoh) is under construction. The present Mandalay-Bhamo-Myitkyina-Putao Highway  is 616 miles and seven furlongs long. Over K 591 million was spent on the road construction alone.  There are large sums of money to be spent on finishing works of the highway and building of bridges on it.


( 2) Secretary-1 inspects development undertakings in Shan and Kachin States
 
YANGON, 11 May -Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Are,as and National Races  Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected regional development undertakings in Shan and Kachin States yesterday and today.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with local authorities, departmental personnel and members of  Union Solidarity and Development Association- and other social organizations.

Minster for Forestry U Aung Phone spoke of the need to collectively conserve forests. Minister for  Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained paddy purchase. The Secretary- 1 and party then inspected the  Township Basic Education High School and Township USDA Office.
 
In Mabein, the Secretary- 1 met with local authorities, departmental personnel and members of USDA  and other social organizations. The Secretary- 1 and party then inspected the Township BEHS and met  with the headmistress and teachers .In Shwegu the Secretary-1  and party attended the opening of  multipurpose teaching centre of No 1 BEHS .

The Secretary- l presented video tapes and teaching aids to the headmaster. At Kyundaw village in the  township, the Secretary-1 and party paid respects to Buddha images at Dattawtaik and Sayadaws at  Zeyabommi Shwebawkyun Monastery. They also presented donations for the Dattawtaik and the  monastery. They then paid homage to Buddha images at Zeyabommi Tweezed Pagoda. The Secretary-l
and party arrived back here from Mandalay by air in the evening.


( 3 ) Minister inspects Thilawa Port, Thakayta Jetty
 
YANGON, 11 May-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe this afternoon visited International  Port Terminal (Thilawa) in Kyauktan Township where he heard reports on development of the port, the  handling of foreign vessels, the number of foreign  vessels which docked at the port, storage of  containers, arrival of palm oil and the rise in earnings. The minister later inspected loading of containers,  timber logs, cement and other goods onto foreign vessels. The minister and officials then proceeded to Thakayta Jetty of Myanma Five Star Line. During the inspection the minister called for comfort, safety  and security of passengers increasing the earnings.


( 4 ) Minister attends opening of refresher course for traditional medicine practitioners

YANGON, 11 May-The opening of a refresher course for traditional medicine practitioners of the  Department of Traditional Medicine jointly organized by the DTM under the Ministry of Health and the  World Health Organization, took place at the department on U Wisara Road this morning, addressed by  Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Also present were directors-general and directors of departments under the Ministry of Health, officials  of WHO, division-level depart mental heads, traditional. medicine practitioners, course instructors and  trainees. The minister said that Myanmar traditional medicine, which is flourishing in Myanmar, has  stood magnificently in the course of cultural history of Myanmar for years. In other words, traditional
medicine has been intertwined closely with Myanmar s topography, traditions, culture and mores based on Buddhism in which Myanmar people have great faith, and it is also a national legacy which has  flourished in Myanmar society. In conclusion, the minister urge all to promote their efficiency, strive for  further improvement of the standard of traditional medicine and discharge duties faithfully and  diligently. The traditional medicine practitioners of state/ divisions and districts are attending the three-
day course.


( 5 ) Myanmar disabled sports contingent leaves for Kuala Lumpur

YANGON, 11 May- Myanmar disabled sports contingent left for Kuala Lumpur to take part in the Tenth  Malaysian Disabled Sports Tournament and the First ASEAN Disabled Sports Tournament to be held at  Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today.

The sports contingent led by President of Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation Col Aung Thein  comprises 42 athletes. The tournament will be held from 13 to 21 May.


( 6 ) Delegates of 20th ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference leave for home

YANGON, 11 May-Delegates who attended the 20th ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference left here for  home by air today.

Police Director-General of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Truong Huu Quoc and party left here at  7:30 am, Mr Pratap Parameswaran of the ASEAN Secretariat and Deputy Police Director-General of  Malaysia Dato Mohd Jamil Bin Johari and party at 8 am, Police Director-General of Cambodia Pol Lt-Gen  Hok Lundy and party, Police Deputy Director-General of the Philippines Reynaldo G Wycoco and party and Police Director-General of Lao People s Democratic Republic Pol Maj-Gen Soutchay Thammasith  and party at 10:30 am, and Police Director-General of Brunei Darussalam Dato Puduka Seri Hj Yaakub Bin  Pehin Orang Kaya Maharaja Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Zainal and party, Police Director-General of  Singapore Mr Khoo Boon Hui and party and Mr I Robert Inkiriwang of the ASEAN Secretariat at 3:30

( 7 ) Cash donated to State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon)
 
YANGON, 11 May-The 1 5th ceremony to donate cash to State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon) was held at the Tekkatho at 2.30 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Sayadaws led by member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee  Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Sasana Takekhathara, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin,  Director- General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana, Director- General Dr Myo Myint of Religious Affairs Department and officials and well-wishers.

Member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw administered the Five Precepts. Minister U  Aung Khin and directors general accepted K 4,858,488 donated by the 40 well-wishers. Director-General  U San Lwin spoke words of thanks.

So far, well-wishers have donated K 66,314,900 for State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon).


( 8 ) World Athletics Day commemorative T&F competitions held

YANGON, 11 May-Under-20 men s and women s track and field competitions took place at Aung San  Stadium yesterday morning in commemoration of World Athletics Day. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic  Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint attended the competitions and presented  prizes to the winners.

Sanda Htwe was first in women  s 10000-metre walk race and Thaung Thaung Naing second and Khin  Ma Win third. Nay Nay Win was first in long jump and Su Su Hlaing second and Nang Hla Htwe third.  In men s shot-put, Saw Tin Myo Lat was first, Soe Nyunt Hlaing second and Naung Naung third.

In men  s 10000-metre walk race, Zaw Htut was first and Myo Lay second. Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye  Myint, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials  presented prizes to the winners.


( 9 ) Tipitakadhara Tipitaka Kovida Sayadaws to be  honoured on 20 May

YANGON, 11 May-A ceremony to honour 48 Sasana Arzani Sayadaws including two Tipitakadhara  Tipitaka Kovida Sayadaws Baddanta Silakkhandhabhivamsa and Baddanta Vamsapalalankara and one Tipitakadhara Sayadaw Baddanta Gandhamalalankara will be held at Maha Pasana Cave on Kaba Aye Hill on 20 May. After the ceremony, the provisions offering ceremony will be held.


( 10 ) U Saw Phe Re Mo, Phado Aung San make donation to military hospitals

YANGON, 11 May- Leader of Thandaung Peace Group U Saw Phe Re Mo and party donated K 100,000  to the Defence Services Physical Rehabilitation Hospital (300bed) in Mingaladon yesterday morning.

U Saw Phe Re Mo explained the purpose of donation Commandant of the Defence Services Physical  Rehabilitation Hospital (300-bed) Mingaladon Lt-Col Soe Than accepted the donation and presented a  certificate of honour to the donors and expressed gratitude. Similarly, Phado Aung San, leader of the  group which exchanged, arms for peace, and party donated K 150,000 to the Defence Services General
Hospital yesterday. Phado Aung San explained the purpose of donation and handed the donation to Commandant of DSGH Col Tin Thein Lwin who presented a certificate of honour and expressed  gratitude.


( 11 ) Two men get imprisonment for possession of drugs

YANGON, 11 May- PyinOoLwin Township Court passed a sentence of six-year imprisonment each on two men on 6 January 1999.

Police Force of PyinOoLwin Township, acting on information, searched the house of Ar Lue (a) Pyu  Shwe, 32, Kyadwinye Village, PyinOoLwin Township, on 23 January 1998, and uncovered 1.74 gms of  opium residue and 0.54 gm of morphine be- longing to Myint Swe of the same village. Action has been  taken against the two under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. They were  sentenced by the court to one year s imprisonment each under Section 15 and five years  imprisonment  each under Section 16 (C).


( 12 ) 27 Ngaputaw Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 11 May-Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of  Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Twenty-seven members of Ngaputaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngaputaw Township Multiparty Democracy General  Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 August 1999 as,they no longer wished to  participate in party politics of NLD.
