(1)  General Maung Aye on inspection tour of Loikaw

YANGON, 7 May-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt- Gen Win Myint, the ministers, the deputy ministers and senior military officers, left Bahtoo Tatmyo in Yaksauk Township for Phekhon by helicopter yesterday morning. The General met with officials at Yeiktha of Phekhon Station, and gave instructions.

The General also cordially met with the Tatmadaw members of Phekhon Station and their families. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo also met with Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Zaw Myint, departmental officials and employees at Yeiktha of the station.

At 9.30 am, the General and party went to Loikaw, Kayah State, by helicopter, where they were welcomed by Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Col Nyunt Hlaing and officials. The Secretary-2, together with the ministers and the deputy ministers, met with officials of Kayah State, district and township departments, employees, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations at the town hall.

General Maung Aye arrived at the town hall, and gave instructions to the departmental officials and employees. The General said that the purpose of his tour is to know true situations of various regions and to attend to requirements of regional development. The General spoke of the need for officials of state/division and township levels to go right down to the grass roots level and attend to the need of regional development.

In conclusion, the General said that efforts are to be made for development of Kayah State, and urged all to work with belief and conviction. Then, the General had a cordial meeting with those present.

Afterwards, the General and party inspected construction of SasanaBeikman in the precincts of Myonan Pagoda in Loikaw.

Then, the General and party made a tour of inspection of Loikaw by car. The General and party inspected fish breeding work and cultivation of vegetables being undertaken by Loikaw Station.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut met with engineers and employees of Lawpita Hydroelectric Plant, and gave instructions on power generation and staff welfare work. In the afternoon, the General and party left Loikaw for Kalaw by helicopter. The Secretary-2 and party also went to Basic Education High School at Tikyit Village, Pinlaung Township, and met with Headmistress Daw Nyo Nyo and staff and village elders. The Secretary-2 attended to requirements of health and education.


(2) Minister inspects factories in Bago Division

YANGON, 7 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, together with,  officials, visited Tapioca Power Factory in DaikU, Bago Division yesterday.

The minister gave instructions on production of quality products and implementation of policies of the ministry. The minister also inspected the tapioca plantations and the distillery machinery, and gave instructions on repair work of machinery. Afterwards, the minister inspected Tapioca Powder Factory.

Minister U Aung Thaung, together with Deputy Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni, Managing Director of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries, U Nwe Thaw and officials, went to Yeni Paper Mill No 2 in Bago Division.

The minister inspected the mill and gave instructions. The minister also chose the site for construction of a new 50-ton paper mill near Yeni Paper Mill. The minister then met with Deputy Director-General of Forest Department U Shwe Kyaw, officials of Yedashe, Ottwin, Pyinmana and Lewe Township Forest Departments, factory managers and bamboo cutters in the meeting hall of Yeni Paper Mill.. The minister then inspected the briquette factory run for the welfare of the employees of Yeni Paper Mill. The minister also met with the factory manager and employees of Zeyawady Distillery No 2 under, Myanma Foodstuff Industries, and elaborated on the policies of the ministry. The minister then inspected the factory. .

(3) Minister inspects construction of roads, bridges in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 7 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials, inspected Hsamalauk-Maubin Road on 5 May. The Minister also inspected Maubin-Kyaiklat, road section and gave instructions to repair the road section  before rainy season. The Minister fulfilled strength of workers and heavy machinery for building the piers. The Minister gave instructions non construction of the approach road, timely completion and supervisory matters.


(4) National Malaria Control Week launched

YANGON, 7 May-A ceremony to launch National Malaria Control Week was held at the Institute of Nursing this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Minister Maj- Gen Ket Sein said Health Ministers Meeting of South East Region and WHO held in October 1999 made decision on placing emphasis for control of malaria and the meeting deiced to solve the malaria problem in border areas and HIV/AIDS campaingn  in cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand.

The minister visited a ceremony to unveil the signboard of National Malaria Control Week in front of the Institute of Nursing and collective sanitation work in Ward 5 in Lanmadaw Township.


(5)  30,000 magnetic bars donated to basic education schools

YANGON, 7 May-Head Priest of Jofukuin Temple Mr Zuiho Nakashita of Koyasan City, Wakayama Prefecture of Japan, donated 30,000 magnetic bars worth about US$, 7,000 to be used as teaching aids at basic education schools in Myanmar
Human Resources Development Department on Hline University Campus this morning .On behalf of Head Priest  of Jofukuin Temple Mr Zuiho Nakashita, retired Division Education Officer U Aung Tin handed over the donations to Minister for Education U Than Aung.

(6)  Third 'Mohinga' Competition concludes

YANGON, 7 May-The prize presentation ceremony for the Third 'Mohinga' Competition organized by Ministry of Hotels and Tourism was held at Yadana Restaurant at People's Park this morning, attended by Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu. Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Aye Myint Kyu present the Sein_U 'Mohinga' shop an d the second to Hi Top ( Kan Kyee Myint) 'Mohinga shop.


(7)  Minister inspects Hanthawady International Airport Construction Project

YANGON, 7 May-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and officials arrived at Hanthawady international Airport Construction Project Office this afternoon.

In the briefing hall, Project Superintending Engineer U Sann Lwin reported to the Minister on preparations for construction of the apron, the runway and the taxi way of the airport, and progress of work, Director General U Win Maung on financial matters and supply of construction, materials and officials on their respective sectors. The Minister gave instructions on arrangements for finishing the earth work, timely completion, systemic management of money and coordination for removing the buildings from the project area as soon as possible.


(8)  More police officials of ASEAN members arrive

YANGON, 7 May-More police officials of ASEAN members and INTERPOL arrived' here by air today to attend the 20th ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference hosted by the Union of Myanmar in Yangon.

They were Pol Gen Pracha Promnog and party of Thailand, Pol Lt-Gen Drs Rusdihardjo and party of Indonesia, Deputy Police Chief of Malaysia Dato Mohd Jamil bin Johari and party, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, Pol Lt-Gen Hok Lundy and party of Cambodia, Pol Maj-Gen Soutchay Thammasith and party of Lao People's Democratic Republic, Deputy Chief of the Philippines' Pol Director-General Panfilo M Lacson and party and Mr Romeo J Sanga of INTERPOL.

They were welcomed at Yangon Intentional Airport by Deputy Director Gerteral of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Chief of Staff (Police) Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win and officials.


(9)  Minister inspects construction of buildings in Dhammapala Hill

YANGON, 7 May- Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin arrived  at the construction site of Passarani Ordination Hall on Dhammapala Hill in Mayangon Township this morning. Afterwards, the Minister also inspected construction tasks of the hall of Sixth Buddhist Synod and Convocation Hall of State (Yangon). He gave instructions on practising thrift and construction of quality buildings.

(10)  Minister inspects construction of Aungzeya Bridge

YANGON, 7 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and officials, arrived at the worksite for construction of Aungzeya Bridge under construction in Insein, yesterday afternoon. The minister left necessary instructions on worksite safety, meeting set standards and proper storage and use of construction materials to officials and attended to their needs.

Then, the minister inspected installation of steel frames and steel suspension work. On completion, the bridge will be 3,786 feet and three inches long including two approach structures on both sides.


(11) 400 to 500 acres of vegetable plantation zone to be established in Hlegu Township

YANGON, 7 May-Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected cultivation and regional development in Hlegu Township this afternoon.

In meeting with officials, the commander spoke of the need to make arrangements to move harvested paddy to shelter and to prepare land for monsoon cultivation. Only when monsoon paddy can be cultivated in time, will the target of 88,525 acres be realized, he said. He gave instructions on cooperation among departments concerned for monsoon paddy cultivation and planting shady trees on both sides of the roads in Hlegu.

Chairman of Hlegu Township Peace and Development Council U Ni reported on cultivation matters and regional development. There are altogether 310,000 saplings of teak, Aurasia, Kokko, Padauk and Mezali in the nursery.


(12) Commander hosts dinner in honour of Shan State (South) USDA study tour     delegation

YANGON, 7 May-Member of Panel of Patrons of Union Solidarity and Development Association Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win hosted dinner in honour of Shan State (South) USDA study tour delegation in Myitkyina City Hall on 3 May evening.

On behalf of the Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, delegation leader Daw Mya Thanda Khaing presented souvenirs of Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo to Commander Mai-Gen Kyaw Win Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win presented souvenirs and cash to delegation leader Daw Mya Thanda Khaing for delegation members.

Afterwards, the Commander had dinner together with guests. Kachin State traditional cultural troupe presented an entertainment programme to the guests.

(13)  Stimulant tablets seized in Monghsu

YANGON, 7 May-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force acting on information, waiting on Aungmingala road, Wankan Ward, Kanchaung Village, Monghsu Township arrested Aikmon of Kanchaung

Village and Aung San of Palaung Village, Monghsu Township, together with 590 stimulant tablets bearing the word "WY". Action has been taken against them in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(14) Nine Singaing NLD members  resign of own accord

YANGON, 7 May-Nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Singaing Township, Mandalay Division.

Nine members of Singaing Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Singaing Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 20 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
