(1) YCDC agricultural project at Uto-Kyain region in Taikkyi Township  to be upgraded to national level model farm Senior General gives guidance  on progress of farming

YANGON, 5 May - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of  Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected Uto-Kyain Agricultural Project in Taikkyi  Township, Myanma Rice Research Bureau in Hmawby and Central Agricultural Research and Training  Farm in Hlegu today.

On arrival at the project at 8 am, the Senior General and party.

The Senior General and party inspected the building of Kyontamyin Sluice Gate.

Mayor U Ko Lay and officials reported to the Senior General on building the sluice gate, its functions,  irrigation and the building of roads for regional development, joined in by Commander Maj-Gen Khin  Maung Than.

The Senior General and party arrived at the construction project for the building of Rice, Vegetable and  Fruit Research Department and Mayor U Ko Lay and officials explained points of the project.

The Senior General and party then inspected research work on per-acre yield of paddy quality of rice.

After observing Magari Creek Sluice Gate Project, the Senior General and party went to the Club House  of City Resort.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin explained matters related to sown acreage  and yield of monsoon and summer paddy in the entire nation, sown acreage and yield of pulses and  beans, rice, vegetable and fruit research work and paddy cultivation and fish breeding in the east of  Bodigwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Minister U Pe Than on efforts for
improvement of waterway system of Myitmakha River.

Senior General Tha Shwe gave guidance.

Then,  Senior General and party inspected the different sections of the department.

They arrived back here in the evening.


(2)  Tatmadaw's unity stood test of time even when administrative machinery ground to halt Wrong beliefs can endanger unity of Tatmadaw

YANGON, 5 May - On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief(Army) General Maung Aye delivered an address at the Graduation Parade of the 103rd Intake of the Defence Services(Army) Officers Training School at the
Parade Ground of the School in Bahtoo Tatmyo this morning.

Afterwards, the General presented the Sword to Best Cadet Than Tun Hla.

Then, the General left the parade ground.

(3) General Maung Aye arrives in Bahtoo Tatmyo

YANGON, 5 May - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary- 2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members
of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, deputy ministers and senior Tatmadaw officers, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday afternoon for Heho in Shan
State (South).

Then, General Maung Aye and party left Heho by air for Bahtoo Tatmyo in Yaksauk Township and spent the night at Bahtoo Tatmyo.


(4)  Secretary-1 attends seminar on introduction of world's first one-metre resolution Ikonos  satellite images

YANGON, 5 May - The International Seminar on Introduction of Space Imagining's World's First One- Metre Resolution Ikonos Satellite Images and Carterra Products and Suntac's Geomatics and Engineering Services was held at the International Business Centre this morning with Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt in attendance.

Mr Bob Noack donated a computer set and an overhead projector set to Myanmar Education Committee and Director U Teza a set of TNT MIPS software and three sets of multimedia note-book computer to the Office of Strategy Studies of the Ministry of Defence.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations.

Later, the Secretary-l, officials and guests observed the demonstration of applying the advanced technologies.

(5)  Secretary-l receives PRC Minister and party

YANGON, 5 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of People's Republic of China Mr Shi Guangsheng and party at the guest house of Ministry of Defence at 1 pm today.


(6)  National Health Committee Chairman attends dinner in honour of outstanding Red Cross youths

YANGON, 5 May - Myanmar Red Cross Society hosted dinner in honour of outstanding Red Cross youths from States and Divisions who are attending Outstanding Red Cross Youths Get together 2000 at Mya Nyi La Hall of Basic Education High School No 2 in Latha Township at 7 pm today, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt had dinner together with outstanding Red Cross youths.

After the dinner, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met with outstanding Red Cross youths.

(7)  Minister U Win Aung signs Book of Condolences for late Mr Pham Van Dong

YANGON, 5 May - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung signed the Book of Condolences at the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 36, Wingaba Road, Bahan Township at 8:30 am today in memory of the late Mr Pham Van Dong, former Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Adviser to the Central Committee of the Vietnam Communist Party.


(8)  54th Anniversary of Fire Services Day observed

YANGON, 5 May - The 54th Anniversary of Fire Services Day was held at Nawade Sports Ground in Mayangon Township this morning, attended by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa took the salute of the parade columns of fire services members led by Head of Yangon Division Fire Services Department U Than Hlaing.

Then, prizes presentation ceremony of Fire Services Day was held at Fire Services Training School. Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa presented certificates of honour to title recipient persons, outstanding persons, artistes, vocalists and the film director of the video teleplay "Barbe Phyit Phyit Thadiyapa" honour of the 54th Anniversary of Fire Services Day.   Director-General U Myint Tun, the deputy Director-General and officials also presented gifts to title recipient persons, outstanding staff, fire services stations, outstanding trainees, fire services members who took part in the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, members of women fire services and auxiliary fire brigades.

YANGON, 5 May - A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein left here by air this morning to attend the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors; Thirty- third Annual Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 6 to 8 May.


(10)  Minister for Sports meets Myanmar rowing team

YANGON,5 May-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint met members of Myanmar rowing team at the meeting hall of National Indoor Stadium No 1 this morning. The team will participate in the First Kunming International Invitional Dragon Boat Race to be held from 8 to 10 May in Kunming, People Republic of China.

First, the team members were introduced to the Minister. Then the Minister delivered a speech. The team leader explained preparations made for the race.

Then the ceremony came to an end with a closing speech by the Minister. The team comprises 23 men, 10 women, two coaches and a doctor. vice-president U Tun Oo of Myanmar Rowing Federation will accompany the team as the team manager.

(12)  Workshop on Directly Observed Short Course (DOTS) Strategy for TB held

YANGON, 5 May - Workshop on Directly Observed Short Course (DOTS) Strategy for TB, jointly organized by the Social Security Board under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and the national TB elimination project of the Department of Health under the Ministry of Health, was held in the meeting hall of the Worker's Hospital this morning.

On the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe made speeches.

The TB specialists and doctors took part in the workshop.

(13)  PRC Minister tours Inlay region

YANGON, 5 May-Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of People's Republic of China Mr Shi Guangsheng and party who had attended ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat, together with Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, toured Inlay region, Shan State, yesterday morning.

They were welcomed there by Col Aung Myo Min of Eastern Command and party.

The visiting minister and party offered flowers, water and lights to Inlay PhaungdawU Pagoda and donated cash to the pagoda board of trustees. Then, they went to Shwehintha Traditional Loom and bought souvenirs.

Afterward, they proceeded to Shweinnmyaw Hotel, and were welcomed by officials and local residents. The entertainment programmes of men's and women's traditional boat races and a demonstration of depicting Inlay Region's traditional 'soon' offering were presented to the visiting minister and party. The visiting minister presented cash of honour to the entertainment troupes.

The guests attended the dinner hosted by Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo at Kanbawza Yeiktha.


(14)  Zaw Win draws Anatoly Karpov (Russia)

YANGON, 5 May - Japfa Classic Super Grand Master Chess Tournament is being held from 22 April at Bali Island, Indonesia.

International Master Zaw Win (Myanmar) and 9 super grand masters Karpov (Russia), Khalifman (Russia), Judit Polgar (Hangary), Timman (the Netherlands), Short (England), Ehlvest (Estonia), Seirawan (The United States), Gunawan (Indonesia), Adianto (Indonesia) are participating in the tournament.

In the first round, Zaw Win was defeated by Khalifman (present world champion). He played draw with Karpov (former world champion), Timman and Gunawan. He beat super grand master Ehlvest.

(15)  Over 4 kilos of opium seized in Monai

YANGON, 5 May - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, while waiting in front of Myoma Basic Education Middle School on Pyidaungsu Road in Pawmong Ward, Monai, on 18 April, stopped a trawler-G bus with number plate Ma Na/91 which left Monai Railway Station.

The team members seized passenger Daw Nang Hsaung, daughter of U Kanna of Pawmong Ward, Monei, with three packets of opium weighing 4.4091 kilos.

Action has been taken against her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(16)  22 Thegon NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 5 May - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thegon Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-two members of Thegon Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thegon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub- commission and the party concerned on 17 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
