(1) Government lays down directives for progress of economic, education and health standards of national races General Maung Aye tours Kutkai, Muse Townships

YANGON, 30 April-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye together with ministers and senior military officers, left Lashio for Tarmonye Village in Kutkai Township by helicopter on 29 April. The General and party inspected development of Tarmonye Village. The General met officials of the village at the building of Maternal and Child Welfare Association. The leader of local people reported on development of Tarmonye region and requirements. General Maung Aye said he came to the region to make arrangements for development of Shan State (North)including Tarmonye, and the region has favourable conditions for agriculture. He spoke of the need to cultivate paddy in the area for rice sufficiency and extend cultivation of other crops suitable for the region. . The General and party had photo-taken session.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing went to Basic Education High School and inspected Basic Courses on Teachings of the Buddha conducted by Union Solidarity and Development Association. The minister presented books. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected Tarmonye Station Hospital. General Maung Aye and party inspected development of Namphatka Village. CEC members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Col Tin Hlaing and Col Thein Nyunt inspected USDA Executives Management Multiplier Course at the basic education high school and presented books.
 
Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected Namphatka Station Hospital. General Maung Aye and party left Namphatka Village in Kutkai Township for 105th mile checkpoint in Muse Township.  The General and party inspected export and import checkpoints. The General and party went to Muse by car. The General and party inspected development of Muse Township. General Maung Aye gave instructions to officials of the township and left for Lashio by helicopter. The Secretary-2, Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, the ministers and officials met members of Shan state (North) Peace and Development Council and officials at the meeting hall of NE Command in Lashio. The Secretary-2, said that all the states and efforts to achieve remarkable progress in the agriculture production sector which is playing a fundamental role in striving for the economic development of the state. Commander Maj- General Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported.
 
Then, the Secretary-2 gave instruction. Minister for Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement Maj- Gen Sein Htwa visited the youth training school of the social Welfare Department in Lashio. The minister also presented stationery to the daycare nurseries.


(2) General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya San pay homage to pagodas in Lashio
 
YANGON, 30 April -Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San paid homage to the pagodas in Lashio on 28 April evening. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San presented cash to members of Pagoda Board of Trustees for the Pagoda. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party went to Maha Myatmuni Pagoda and offered Shwethingan to the pagoda. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San presented cash towards the pagoda funds.

Member of Pagoda Board of Trustees presented a replica of Maha Myatmuni' Pagoda to General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya San. Later, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party visited Sasana (2500) Pyilonechantha Pagoda and paid homage to Buddha images at the pagoda. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San presented cash towards the pagoda funds. Then, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party paid homage to Hsutaungpyi Mamsu Pagoda and made a donation towards the pagoda funds.


(3) General Maung Aye inspects agricultural work in Kutkai

YANGON, 29 April - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye. ,the ministers and senior military officers, left Lashio for Kutkai by helicopter yesterday afternoon. Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Yee reported on reclamation of virgin land in Kutkai Township and arrangements for cultivation of paddy, corn, groundnut and mung bean, and Chairman of May Flower Group U Kyaw Win on reclamation of 11,100-acre land in Kutkai Township, arrangements for the growing of saffron, passion fruit and green tea and implementation of the three-year plan beginning Year 2000. Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aung Myint Oo and Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on agricultural matters. The General gave instructions on cultivation of paddy and regional sufficiency in rice. Minister for Health Maj- Gen Ket Sein also inspected People's Hospitals in Kutkai Township . Then, General and party went back to Lashio by helicopter in the afternoon.


(4)  Secretary-1 inspects Padauk Shwewa, Yadana Beikman Monastic Education Schools in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 30 April-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Padauk Shwewa Monastic Education School in Ward 5 in Mayangon Township at 8.15 am today. First, Secretary-1 Le-Gen Khin Nyunt and party paid obeisance to Padauk Shwewa Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pavara. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  inspected construction of the two-storey building and paid homage to the Buddha image at Padauk Shwewa Kyaungtaik. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went to Yadana Beikman Monastic Education School in Ward 5 in the township. First, Secretary-1 Lt Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Katkyaw Buddha image in the school. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt fulfilled the requirements and gave necessary instructions to officials.


(5) Secretary-l inspects construction of religious buildings

YANGON, 30 April - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office arrived at construction site of Ordination Hall of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University at 2.30 pm today.

Secretary- I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Ordination Hall at the university. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Aryonkhan Tazaung at the Tooth Relic Pagoda.

Officials conducted Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspecting around the construction site. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party proceeded to construction site of administrative office and library at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the greening work in the precinct of administrative office and library (central) and construction of a fountain at the university. Then Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt also inspected the finishing touches of Myanmar handicraft work at administrative office and library (central) of the university and preparations for the library. The Secretary-1 and party went to the Museum on the Sixth Buddhist Synod at Kaba Aye Hill and inspected the scale model on holding of the Six Buddhist Synod and arrangements to exhibit materials used in the Sixth Buddhist Synod. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin. Nyunt also inspected arrangements for installation of iron grille at Maha Nayaka Kyaungdawgyi. Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of convocation Hall and Dhammayon at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and left there in the evening.


(6) Minister receives delegates who arrive to attend AEM Retreat

YANGON, 30 April-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel received Minister of Trade of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Vu Khoan and party at Traders Hotel, Sule Pagoda Road, Yangon, at 1:30 pm, today, Minister of Commerce of Cambodia Mr Cham Orasudh and party at 3 pm and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce of Thailand Mr Supachai Panichpakdi and party at 4 pm respectively.


(7) More delegates arrive to attend ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat

YANGON, 30 April-A delegation led by Minister of Commerce Mr Vu Khoan of Vietnam, a delegation led by Director-General Mr Karun Kittisataporn of Economics Department under the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, a delegation led by Director-General Mr Masakazu Toyoda of International Economic Affairs Department of Japan, a delegation led by Chairman of  ASEAN Task Force Mr Roberto R Romulo, Minister of Industry and Basic Resources PD Abdul Rahman Taib of Brunei Darussalam, a delegation led by Minister of Trade and Industry BG George Yeo of Singapore, Chairman of AFTACER FTA Task Force Mr Cesar EA Virata, a delegation led by General Secretary of the ASEAN Secretariat Mr Rodolfo C Severino Jr, a delegation led by Minister at Prime Minister's Office Prof Dr Bountlem Phitsamay of Laos, a delegation led by Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato Seri Rafidah Aziz of Malaysia, a delegation led by Minister of Trade and Industry Mr Manuel Roxas II of the Philippines and Director General Mr Hatanto Peksodipoetro of Trade and Industry Department of Indonesia arrived here by air today to attend ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat and the Meeting between the ASEAN Economic Ministers and the Economic Ministers from the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea on East Asia Cooperation to be held here on 1 and 2 May. They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, deputy ministers, diplomats and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


(8) Minister inspects construction of Mandalay-PyinOoLwin Road

YANGON, 30 April- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials, arrived at construction site of Padaungkya Bridge on Mandalay- PyinOoLwin Road on 27 April. The minister then gave instructions on timely completion of the bridge and minimizing loss and wastage to the officials. Next, the minister and party inspected Htonbo-Myitnge and Myitnge-TadaU short-cut roads. They proceeded to construction site of TadaU Dokhtawady-Mandalay Internationals Airport approach road. The minister gave necessary instructions.


(9) Commander meets departmental officials in Kayin State 

YANGON, 30 April- Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung met Kayin State and District-level departmental officials and officials of social organizations of Kayin State at Kayin State Peace and Development Council Office in Hpa-an Township on 27 April.
The commander elaborated on cooperation between departmental officials and social organizations in regional development.

In the afternoon, the commander inspected Hpaan (Wabodaw) Cargo Checkpoint and attended to the needs of the check-point. On 28 April, the commander looked round the tax-free market near Kyauktaing sports ground in Ward 3 in Hpa-an and the tax-free market near Thiri Market in Ward 6. He cordially met shopkeepers and buyers. Under the arrangement of Kayin State Peace and Development Council, two tax-free markets opened in Hpa-an and rice, edible oil, meat, fish and vegetables are being sold at reasonable prices.


(10) Kanbawza Bank Ltd opens branch in Tachilek

YANGON, 30 April- Tachilek branch of Kanbawza Bank Ltd opened at No 1/2 on Cherry Road in Tarlot Ward in Tachilek on 29 April. Minister U Khin Maung Thein formally unveiled the signboard of Tachilek branch. Next, Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Ministers U Khin Maung Thein and Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Chairman U Aung Ko Win formally opened the branch. The guests then inspected functions of the bank. Minister U Khin Maung Thein and Managing Director U Zaw Win Naing of Kanbazaw Bank Ltd Spoke.


(11) 4,800 stimulant tablets seized in Taunggyi

YANGON, 30 April-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting near the Meitsweyin Restaurant, West Ring Road, Chan Mya Thazi Ward, Taunggyi, Shan State (South), on 12 April, and seized Ma Win, daughter of U Hsi Up, Ward 4, Tantyan, together with 4,800 stimulant tablets bearing the words 'WY' . Upon investigation, owners of the stimulant tablets, Kyaw Tun, son of U Yan Ngo Chain, Ward 2, Tantyan and Tin Hlaing (a) Thein Hlaing son of U Yan Phin Chan who were putting up at No 71, Region 6, Block 9, Ayethaya Myothit, Taunggyi Township were then seized. Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(12)  30 Mingaladon NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 30 April-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division. Thirty members of Mingaladon Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingaladon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 28 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
