(1) Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing offer rice and alms to Sayadaws

YANGON, 25 April - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander -in- Chief of Defence Service Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kying Kying and Daw family and relatives offered rice and alms to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha at Nikaya Sarthintaik of the Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee on Pale Yadana Street in Dagon Myothit (South ) Township this morning.

The Senior general and wife Daw Kying Kying and family and guest received the five Precepts from Myingyan Koehsaung-taik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita. Afterward, the Senior general and wife Daw Kying Kying and family and relatives offered rice and alms to the Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and Sayadaw and members of the Sangha.

The Senior General and wife donated K 5000,000 to the soon trust fund of Nikaya Sarthintaik. Minister U Aung Khin accepted the donations. After the ceremony , the Senior General and Daw Kying Kying and family and relatives offered soon to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha.


(2) Over 18 billions kyats spent on development tasks for border area and national races

YANGON, 24 April-The Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races held its coordination meeting No 1/2000 in the meeting hall of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs this afternoon.  Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and Nationals Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt address the meeting. The Secretary-1 urged all to contribute to the discussions.

Then, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt reported on the building of the main roads in each border area, the providing of machinery for the development tasks of border areas, distribution of fertilizer, tractors and bulldozers granted by Japanese Government under the programme of boosting the production of food in border areas, cultivation, production and export of buckwheat, arrangements to extend cultivation of buckwheat this year, conditions of construction of roads and bridges and agriculture and irrigation undertakings being carried out with the use of contributions given by the Government and UNDCP under the narcotic drug control and development programme, expenses for development of border areas and national races, the establishment of regional supervisory offices and measures for development of human resources. Then, various subcommittees reported on the tasks being carried out in border areas. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all to strive for the successful implementation of the six strategic objectives given by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and the further flourishing of national solidarity and Union Spirit, to cooperate with national leaders in eradicating narcotic drugs and to endeavour for the improvement of living standards of national brethren from border areas, for the improvement of transport and development of agriculture and livestock breeding sectors and regional sufficiency in rice.

(3) Secretary 2 inspects sea prawn breeding farms in Ayeyawady Division, Rakhine State

YANGON, 25 April-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental officials and entrepreneurs, left here by helicopter for Thetkal-thoung sea prawn breeding farm in Ngapudaw Township on 23 April.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann said Ayeyawady Division is a region where fresh water and sea prawn can be bred and according to the study in the division there are over 30,000 acres in Pathein, Thabaung, Ngapudaw, Labutta, Pyaon and Bogalay Townships for breeding of sea prawn. Sea prawn breeders in Ngapudaw Township reported on benefits of the business. Entrepreneurs took part in the discussions. The Secretary-2 and party inspected prawn and sample prawn at Thetkalthoung sea prawn breeding farm. Officials reported on production of feedstuff for prawn with the use of local raw materials. The Secretary-2 gave instructions. The Secretary-2 and party left the farm for Ngwehsaung Beach Resort by helicopter. On the way they inspected places in Chaungtha, Thazin, Magyi regions where sea prawn breeding can be carried out. On arrival at Ngwehsaung Beach Resort, the Secretary2 and Party were welcomed Brig-Gen Tint Swe and officials. Project Director Col Myint Aung of Ngwehsaung Beach Resort Construction Project reported on opening of the beach resort, construction of bungalows of 19 companies and arrival of the visitors. The Secretary-2 and party inspected Yuzana Resort Hotel. At the hall of Yuzana Resort Hotel the entrepreneurs .discussed acres of land for sea prawn breeding in Thazin region.The Secretary-2 and party observed spawns of Shwepazun farm in Kyaukkyi Village in Gwa Township. Officials reported on catching of prawn and the Secretary-2 fulfilled the requirements. The Secretary-2 and party went to Thandwe and inspected sea prawn breeding jointly undertaken by Fisheries Department and Leo Export Import Co Ltd in Hmohinpyin Village in Thandwe Township. The Secretary-2 then gave instructions. The ministers and entrepreneurs observed prawn ponds. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung who accompanied the Secretary-2, inspected Maei Rural Healthcare Centre and Maci Basic Education High School and attended to the needs. In the afternoon, the Secretary-2 and party went to Kyaukphyu by helicopter and inspected areas where sea prawn can be bred. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the spawn breeding station of FD where they heard officials' reports on breeding of 2 million spawns.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party went to the regional battalion and inspected breeding of poultry and pig there. They then inspected Aungdaing Fresh-water Prawn Breeding Pond of the Rakhine State Peace and Development Council, and Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Police Col Nyo Win of Rakhine State Police Force reported on production o,f prawn and fish of the pond and sales of them.

In the meeting room of the Western Command, the Secretary-2 met members of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council, officials of Rakhine State, and district and township departmental officials.

Meeting them, the Secretary-2 said after touring Yangon and Ayeyawady divisions and Gwa, Thandwe and Kyaukphyu areas of Rakhine State, he and officials came to Sittway to inspect the areas where sea prawn can be bred, and regional development tasks.

Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe then reported on arrangements for providing assistance for success in extension of sea prawn breeding. At 10 pm, the Secretary-2 paid homage to Lawka Nanda Pagoda in Sittway and made donations.

This morning, the Secretary-2 and party inspected sea prawn ponds in Yathedaung Township and arrived at the prawn breeding ponds of Rakhine Trading Co. The company is running the business on 240 acres of land in Panzinmaw Village and 165 acres in Hsarpyinchay Village.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the areas where sea prawn breeding can be undertaken in Ponnagyun Township.

While in Sittway, the Secretary-2 inspected lobster enterprises in Odan Ward and then proceeded to the 200ton cold storage and ice factory of Myanmar-Garmin Fisheries Ltd.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on completing the factory and doing the works systematically. Then, the Secretary-2 and party went to Ohndaw Model Prawn Pond of the Western Command in Ohndaw Village.

Similarly, according to the study made in Rakhine State, the meeting was held again to maket coordination for more areas for sea prawn breeding, Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein took part in the discussions and the Secretary-2 made the concluding speech. The Secretary-2 and party arrived back here in the evening.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Director-General of General Administration Department U Aung Thein inspected Basic Education High Schools No 1, 2 and.4 in Sittway township and met the Rakhine State Education Officer, school heads and teachers and inspected teaching aids.

The deputy minister and party inspected No 1 Police Station, the nursery of Rakhine State Police Force and the hospital there. The deputy minister discussed management and academic matters with officials of organizations under the Ministry of Home Affairs and departmental officials at Rakhine State GAD Office.


(4) Minister meets Singapore Ambassador and Japanese visitors

YANGON, 25 April-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Singapore Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Simon Tensing De Cruz and General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation Mr Toshiro Takayama and party of Japan at his office at 9.30 am and 10.30 am today respectively. Also present on the occasion was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.


(5) Minister for Industry-1 meets guests from China

YANGON, 25 April-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Managing Director Ms Luo Yan of China National Constructional and Agricultural Machinery Import and Export corporation in Yangon and party at his office this morning. Also present at the all were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and officials.


(6) Aviation, Marine Courses for New Generation Youth opened in Myitkyina, Toungoo, Myeik, Mawlamyine

YANGON, 25 April-The Aviation Course for New Generation Youth jointly organized by the Union Solidarity and Development Association (Central) and the Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Office was opened at Town Hall of Myitkyina Township yesterday morning.

Fifty trainees will attend the five-week course. Similarly, the Aviation Course for New Generation Youth was opened at Kaytu Yadana Hall in Toungoo Township yesterday. The Basic Marine Course 1/ 2000 and Advanced Marine Course No 1/2000 for New Generation Youth (Myeik Camp) co organized by USDA (Central) and the Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Office was opened at Pale Yadana Hall in Myeik on 24 April. The marine courses were also opened at Mawlamyine Camp in Mon State on 24 April.

The Commander Maj- Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung accepted K1 million donated to the course by well-wishers.The Commander then inspected construction of Myeik Township Hospital (200 -bed) and Myeik College.

(7) Dredger, support ship handed over to DWRIR

YANGON, 25 April- IHC Co of The Netherlands handed a dredger and its support ship over to the Department of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems, Ministry of Transport, at the Nanthida Jetty, here, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, heads of department under the Ministry of Transport, Managing Director (Asia) Mr Van der Valk and officials of IHC Co and guests Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe made a speech on the occasion. The new dredger is worth US $ 2.1 million and more advanced and capable than the ones which are in use, and it would be used in the tasks for improvement of urban and rural jetties and waterways, he said. According to Director General of DWRIRS Capt Chit Khin (Navy) who also spoke on the occasion, the new dredger is 26.30 metres in length and 6.69 metres in width, and is capable of dredging up mud and silt up to 10 metres in depth. It can dredge 250 to 600 CU metre an hour depending on the type of earth. The support ship is 10 metres in length and five metres in width and 1.8 metres in depth and equipped with a crane capable of lifting loads weighing 2.4 to 12 tons. Mr Van der Valk made a speech. The minister and officials inspected the dredger and its support ship.


(8) Meteorology and Hydrology Department holds coordination meeting

YANGON, 25 April-The Meteorology and Hydrology Department of the Ministry of Transport held a meeting to assess the work done in the 1999-2000 fiscal year and to coordinate the work for the 2000-2001 fiscal year in the meeting hall of the department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe addressed the meeting. The minister elaborated on the six objectives of the department, and gave instructions on the work. Deputy Minister U Pe Than also spoke of the departmental work. Then, regional officers reported on the work done in respective states and divisions. The meeting will continue tomorrow.


(9) UMFCCI officials meet business delegation from Vietnam

YANGON 25 April-An eleven-member business delegation from Vietnam called on President U Win Myint of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, central executives committee member, representatives of departments and entrepreneurs at No 504/506, Merchant Street at 10 am today.

They cordially and openly discussed investment and promotion of trade matters on agriculture sector, batteries, rubber, vehicles and tires.

(10) Minister inspects demonstration of rubbish grinders

YANGON, 25 April-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt accompanied by Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin and Officials inspected the demonstration of rubbish grinders invented by States, Divisions and Townships Development Committees on the campus of Central Training School at No 51 Ward Dagon Myothit ( North ) at 8 am today.

The minister inspected the rubbish grinders.  The Minister gave instruction. Township Development Committees are trying to produce natural fertilizers using grinded rubbish, make them use in greening works and growing kitchen crops and sell them to agricultural works at resonable prices.


(11) Tatmadaw Agriculture Course No 39 opens

YANGON, 25 April- Tatmadaw Agriculture Course No 39 opened at the central paddy cultivation model farm of Myanma Rice Research Centre in Hmawby this morning.

It was attended by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, and managing directors of departments and enterprises, general managers, course instructors, traineers and guests.

The minister and Brig- Gen Maung Nyo greeted trainnes. The 14-week cours is being attended by 111 trainees of regiments and units. The minister then inspected the site.


(12)People of Natogyi Township submit petitions expressing no support for and dissolving NLD

YANGON, 25 April-The people from Natogyi Township, Myingyan District, expressed no support for National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies held in Khetlan, Kyundaunt, Myetshu, Pyinsi, Zidaw, Htanaungbinle, Ywagyi, Letwe, Min and Htangwa (North) village-tracts this morning.

A total of 5.242 peoples from six village-tracts attended the rally in Khetlan Village-tract. On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Aung Win of Ywathit Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it Farmer U Thein Tun of Khetlan Village, farmer U Aung Kyaw Myint of Daingla Village and farmer U Bo of Daungbo Village, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Pu.

The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Altogether 5,912 people from four village-tracts attended the rally in Zidaw Village-tract. On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Khin Maung Aye of Zidaw Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Three representatives, on behalf of people from the village-tract, presented petitions signed by the people to Joint Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaing.

The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Similarly, 5,453 people from five village-tracts attended the rally in Myetshu Village-tract.

On behalf of people, farmer U Aung Shwe of Myatshu Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Five representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Hla Tun.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Likewise, 5,000 people from 11 village-tracts attended the rally in Pyinsi Village-tract. On behalf of people, farmer U Kyay of Pyinsi Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Three representatives, on behalf of people from the Villagetract, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Aye Kyin.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Altogether 5,855 people from nine village-tracts attended the rally in Letwe Village -tract. On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Tet Toe of Myinni Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Nyo Hla of Myinni Village, farmer U Maung San of Letwe Village and farmer U Kyaw Aung of Thusoe, on behalf of people from the village-tract, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Naing.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". A total of 5,958 people from 11 village-tracts attended the rally in Kyundaunt Village-tract. On behalf of the people, farmer U Bo Aung Naing of Kyundaunt Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Kya Hla of Kyundaunt, farmer U Kyi Shwe of Hsaygingyi Village and farmer U Mya Than of Wetlu Village, on behalf of attendance's from the village-tract, presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Than Aung.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Similarly, 3,900 people from five wards and eight villages attended the rally in Htanaungbinle Villagetract.
On behalf of attendance's, merchant U Kyaw Win of Htanaungbinle Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Seven representatives, on behalf of people from the village-tract, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myo Lwin.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". A total of 5,242 people from Ywagyi and Nanwindawboe Village-tracts attended the rally in Ywagyi Village-tract. On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Zaw Win of Ywgyi Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Bo Win of Ywagyi

Village-tract and farmer U Khin Maung Than of Nanwindawboe Village-tract, on behalf of people from two village-tracts, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Swe Swe.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Likewise, 4,000 people from five village-tracts attended the rally in Kyaungni (Min) Village-tract.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer Daw Than Than Maw of Kugon Village-tract expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Ni Ta of Min Village, farmer U Pyu Sein of Bugaing Village and farmer U Bo Tin of Hlyawbyu Village, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Dr Kyaw Soe.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". A total of 2,700 people from three wards and three village-tracts attended the rally in Htangwa Village-tract. On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Kyaw Oo of Htanzin (Ta) Village expressed no support NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Seven representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Myint.

The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". There are 121,841 people, who can vote, in Natogyi Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 108,920 people or 89.40 per cent.

(13) Great Wall National Badminton Tournament opens

YANGON, 25 April-A ceremony to open the First Great Wall National Badminton Tournament organized by Myanmar Badminton Federation and Great Wall Pharmaceutical Production Co Ltd was held at the National Indoor Stadium 1, in Thingangyun Township, this morning. Chairman of Myanma Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint gave a speech and opened the tournament.


(14) 48 Pyay NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 25 April-Forty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyay Town ship, Bago Division.

Forty-eight members of Pyay Township NLD Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 November l999 as they no longer wishes to participate in party politics of NLD.
