(1) General Maung Aye receives Military Attaches of PRC

YANGON, 21 April- Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Military Attaché of the People's Republic of China Senior Colonel Ma Shoudong who has completed his tour duty, and newly appointed Military Attaché Senior Colonel Xu Shulai at the Guest House of the Ministry of
Defense this morning.

With General Maung Aye were Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Office  of Strategic Studies Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Secretary-2 Chief of  Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, and Members of the Council  Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in -Chief (Air) Lt- Gen Kyaw
Than.


(2) Secretary-1 receives Japanese officials

YANGON, 21 April-Secretary- I of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  received Director General of Policy Research Council, Liberal Democratic Party, Japan, and Secretary to  Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock of Japan Mr Tomomitsu Iwakura and Director of the  Ministry Mr Akira Karasawa at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

With the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung  Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Director General of Political  Department U Nyunt Maung Shein. The guests were accompanied by Charge d' Affaires ai of Japanese  Embassy MT Yoshihiko Kamo.


(3) Minister meets Ambassador of Bangladesh

YANGON, 21 April- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met  Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office this morning. Also present on the occasion  were Managing Director U Maung Maug Tin of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and officials.


(4) Minister receives Ambassador of China

YANGON 21 April-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung received Ambassador of the People's  Republic of China Mr Liang Dong at Myanmar Radio and Television this morning . Also present on the  occasions were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials.


(5) Minister meets Japanese visitors

YANGON, 21 April- Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs  Col Thein Nyunt met Director-General Mr Tomomitsu Iwakura of Japan Liberal Democratic Party's  Research Council for Policy Affairs at his office at afternoon today. Also present on the occasion were  Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Director and officials.


(6) Education for All Programmes meet with tangible success Literacy rate of Myanmar accounts for 91% Myanmar Education Resource Centre inaugurated

YANGON. 21 April -The inauguration ceremony of Myanmar Literacy Resource Centre took place in the  compound of Myanmar Education Research Bureau on Pyay Road this morning.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard of the Centre. Also present were ministers, the Chief  Justice, State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads, the chairman and members of  the Administrative Committee for the Centre, officials of the Japanese embassy, officials of Asia and
Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU), rectors of universities, professors and guests.

After formally unveiling the signboard of the Centre, the Secretary-l and party inspected the building of  the Centre. Then, a ceremony to mark the opening of the Centre was held in the building of the Centre.  After the opening of the Centre, the first task is to hold the workshop on supervising and assessing  literacy and continuing education on 24 April with the assistance of UNESCO (PROAP), and the
workshop on production of teaching aids of continuing education with the help of ACCU.

In conclusion, the minister called for the systematic plans of literary and continuing education to be  carried out at the Centre built with the noble goodwill of the Japanese Government, ACCU, Myanmar  Government and the people.

Charge d' Affaires of the Japanese Embassy Mr Yoshihiko Kamo and Director of ACCU Mr Shigeru  Aoyagi made speeches. Member of MLRC Administrative Committee U Tin Nyo elaborated on how  MLRC has emerged and facts about the Centre. Chairman of MLRC Administrative Committee U Than  Oo spoke words of thanks.


(7) Tax-free markets benefit families of low and medium income and farm producers

YANGON, 21 April - A meeting was held in a meeting hall of Yangon City Development Committee this  evening to review the success of tax-free markets in Yangon where farm producers are selling their  goods. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the tax-free markets are crowded more and  more every day with buyers and sellers who themselves are farm producers. Other makers should make  arrangements to sell goods which are not available at the tax- free markets. The Secretary-2 looked into  the requirements.


(8) Secretary-2 inspects tax-free markets in Yangon

YANGON, 21 April - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected  tax-free markets here this morning.

The Secretary-2 observed sale of fish by BTB Company, Annawa Fisheries Holding Limited, Ma- Myanmar Marine Products Trading and KN Company, selling of rice by Myanmar Rice Wholesalers  Association and selling vegetables, meat, fish and personal goods at the market. In control office, the  Secretary-2 met with officials, urging them to give supervision to ensure convenience of the buyers.


(9) Meeting held to coordinate measures for crime reduction and maintenance of discipline

YANGON, 21 April - A coordination meeting on crime reduction and maintenance of discipline was held  in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this evening, addressed by Secretary-2 of the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

At the meeting, the Secretary-2 spoke of speedy disposal of criminal cases which are pending at some  courts for various reasons. Chief Justice U Aung Toe reported on measures to he taken for disposal of  cases which are pending at the courts, and Attorney-General U Tha Tun on matters related to speedy  disposal of cases and Minister Col Tin Hlaing on occurrence of criminal case and sending cases to the
court. The Secretary-2 attended to requirements for reducing the number of case pending at the courts.


(10) Supervises cultivation, education matters in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 21 April-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by departmental officials members of Division,  District and Township Agriculture Supervisory Committees, went to plot number 450 of Myananda  advanced land reclamation camp in Mandalay Village, Patheingyi Township, on 20 April morning.

In Patheingyi Township, 23,427 acres of land were put under summer paddy against, the target of 23,420 acres in 1999-2000. Likewise, 5,480 acres of land were put under summer paddy against the target of  5,435 acres in Myannnada advanced land reclamation camp. In the afternoon, the Commander attended  the ceremony to present prized the outstanding students for their performance in 1999 Matriculation  Examination at the National Theatre in Mandalay and gave speech. Afterward, the Commander and  officials presented prizes to 10 student who won prizes between first and 10th places all over the nation,  first, second and third prize winners in Mandalay division and other outstanding students.


(11) Minister inspects MCI ships

YANGON, 21 April- Minister for Industry- 1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials, inspected  Kokoegyi and Kyitha-1 ships of Myanmar Ceramic Industries moored at the jetty of Thakayta Offshore  Oil Exploration Base this morning.

The minister gave instructions on taking measures for durability of coastal going ships, taking  preventive measures for dangers at sea, inspection of equipment of the vessels and substituting radar  equipment with new ones. The ships of MCI are being used in carrying sand and raw materials for the  glass factories in Thanlyin and Pathein, from Aleman Island in Bokpyin Township to the factories.


(12) Permits for gems, mining blocks to be issued through competitive bidding

YANGON, 21 April-- The Central Supervisory Committee for Gems, Ministry of Mines will issue permits  for gems mining blocks, which arc due to expire in July, August and September, through competitive  bidding in accordance with the law and

Registration for mining is to be made and tender forms are available at Myanma Gems Enterprise  between 24 April and 9 May and tenders are to be put in at MGE Head Office between 24 April and 30  May.


(13) Minister inspects display of MPS Golden Jubilee Commemorative Photo Exhibition

YANGON, 21 April- Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung arrived at Tatmadaw Convention Hall  on U Wisara Road al 4.50 pm today. The Minister inspected prize-winning photos on art and culture of  ASEAN member nations, ancient photos and masterpieces of scholars to be displayed at the Traditional  Art and Culture of ASEAN Photographic Exhibition in commemoration of the Myanmar Photographic
Society and left there at 5.45 pm.


(14) Seventh MST President's Trophy Sepak Takara Tournament begins

YANGON 21 April- The Seventh Myanmar Sepak Takara Federation President's Trophy Sepak Takraw  Tournament began at the training hall of Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this morning. In selection  class of men's team event. Forestry (A) beat Yangon City Development Committee 2- 1 and Agriculture  and Irrigation (A) beat Agriculture and Irrigation (B) 2-0. In selection class of women's team event,
Home Affairs (A) beat Home Affairs (C) 2 and Home Affairs (B) beat YCDC (A)2-0. The tourney will be held till 28 April.


(15) 0.1962 kilo of morphine seized in Hsenwi

YANGON, 21 April -A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar  Police Force searched a van with number plate SKa/7723, going from Kunlong to Lashio, at Yaybu  restricted Cargo Inspection Gate in Hsenwi Township, Shan State (North), on 21 March.

The team arrested passenger Than Nyunt Oo, son of U Tun Nyunt of No 7 in Hseipaw ward, Lashio  Township, with Red Lion brand three blocks of morphine weighing 0.1962 kilo on him. Action is being  taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(16) 11 Myingyan NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 21 April-Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myingyan  Township, Mandalay Division. Eleven members of Myingyan Township NLD, Mandalay Division of  their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myingyan Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 25 January 2000 as they no  longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
