(1) Senior General Than Shwe offers rice and alms to Sayadaws in Thandwe Township

YANGON, 17 April -Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe attended the ceremony of donating rice and alms to monasteries and Nunnery Sarthintaiks in Thandwe Township in the town hall of Thandwe this morning. Abbot Sayadaws of 50 monasteries in the township graced the ceremony. Sayadaw of Nadawtaung Monastery Chairman of Thandwe Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Bhaddanta Nanda Myitzu administered the Five Precepts.

Then, the Senior General offered rice and alms to Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Bodhi Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Eindaka. The Secretary-2, the Secretary-3 and party offered rice and alms to the Sayadaws. The Secretary-2 offered rice and alms to the Presiding Nuns of three Nunnery Sarthintaiks. Then, the Senior General and party shared merits for the good deeds.

Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, together with Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, went to the regional battalion yesterday, and met with Tatmadaw members and either families there. The Secretary-2 and party then inspected the breeding of prawns being undertaken by the Fisheries Department and Leo Export Import Co Ltd at Hmohinpyin Village in Thandwe Township at 2.30 pm. Minister for Health Maj- Gen Ket Sein visited Thandwe District People s Hospital of the Health Department. The minister also met with health employees in the meeting hall of the hospital. The Secretary-2 gave instructions on work.

(2) Myanma Traditional Thingyan Festival held  in Kengtung

YANGON, 17 April-A ceremony to open Myanma Traditional Thingyan Festival was held at the Central Pandal in the sports ground of Triangle Region Command in Kengtung on 12 April evening. The commander and party visited pandals in Kengtung on 12 April evening., Akyat and Atet Days and presented prizes to prize-winners in yein and dobat competitions.


(3) Myanmar Traditional Thingyan Festival held in Israel

YANGON, 17 April-Year 2000 Thingyan Festival of Myanmar families and friends was held at the residence of Ambassador of Myanmar to Israel U Kyaw Myint in Tel Aviv, Israel, on 12 April (Akyo Day).

Ambassador U Kyaw Myint extended greetings. Myanmar citizens and guests were served with vermicelli soup and Myanmar traditional meals. Trainees of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation attending Agricultural Course in Israel presented Thingyan yein dances to the audience. Then, those present enjoyed Myanmar traditional Thingyan Festival.


(4) Gifts for No 2 Military Hospital (500-Bed)

YANGON, 17 April- Family of Major Maung Than (Retd) of No 6/332, Maha Bandoola Street, 37 Ward, Dagon Myothit (North) donated medicine and medical equipment valued at K 50,000 to No 2 Military Hospital (500-Bed) this morning in memory of late wife Daw Nan San Khan.
On benefit of the commandant of the hospital, Registration Officer Lt- Col Tin Thein accepted the donation, spoke words of thanks and presented a certificate of honour to the well- wishers.

(5) Closing ceremony of Central Pandal in Myeik

YANGON, 17 April-A ceremony to close the Central Pandal of Myanma Traditional Thingyan Festival in Myeik District was held in conjunction with prize-presentation ceremony at the pandal on 15 April evening. The commander and officials presented prizes to prize-winning yein troupe members. The ceremony came to a close with a presentation prize-winning yein troupe members.


(6) Commander inspects Natma Hill National Kanpetlet-Mindat Road

YANGON, 17 April- Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, accompanied by departmental officials, the Chairman of Mindat District Peace and Development Council and officials, left Natma Hill National Park in Kanpetlet Township on 13 April and scaled the Natma Hill (or) Mount Victoria. Afterwards, the Commander and party inspected new Kanpetlet-Mindat Road and gave necessary instructions. He also inspected Kyukkhtu- Htilin-Yemeyetni-Monywa road. He also inspected  Kyaukhtu-Htilin-Yemyetni- Monywa road.


(7) Opening ceremony of 25-bed hospital in Sittaung No 1 Paper Mill  held

YANGON, 17 April- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and officials attended the opening of the 25-bed hospital donated by former employee U Thein Aung-Daw Khin Myint Yee at the Sittaung No 1 Paper Mill in Mon State this morning. The minister and party inspected wards, operation theatre, the X-ray room and the delivery room. Well-wishers U Thein Aung handed over related documents to factory manager U Aung Soe, who presented a certificate of honour to the donor. Minister U Aung Thaung inspected warehouse, running of the mill, machines to be repaired, boiler and cooling process. The minister met the factory manager and staff.

(8) Donation for Maha Amthtoo Kantha Hsutaungpyay Pagoda

YANGON, 17 April-The donation ceremony for offering gold foils to the Buddha image and gilding the throne at Maha Amthtoo Kantha Hsutaungpyay Pagoda on Dhammarati Hill in PyinOoLwin Township was held at Gandhakuti Taik of the pagoda on 16 April.

Then, the Commander and family and well-wishers presented K 1,192,100 for officering gold toils to the Buddha image and gilding the throne at Maha Amthtoo Kantha Hsutaungpyay Pagoda. Next, the Commander inspected progress of work in construction of Salarambha two-storey building of Zayan-Namsan Sasana Rekkhita Nunnery, a branch of Shwezedi Yeiktha, in Myananda Ward, PyinOoLwin.


(9) Minister for F&R meets guests from Indonesia

YANGON, 17 April-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Chairman Mr Purnardi Djojosudirdijo of Goldwater Co,Ltd of Indonesia and party at his office at 2 pm today. Also present at the call was U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar.



(10) Minister inspects railways, bridges

YANGON, 17 April - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung inspected rail lines and bridges from Yemyetni Railway Station to Gangaw Railway Station in Htilin Township, Magway Division, on 12 April. Accompanied by officials. the minister continued to inspect the rail lines till reaching Kalay Railway Station in Sagaing Division. Officials should divide the sectors which need repairing, the minister stressed. On 14 April, the minister looked into the requirements in repairing the rail and bridge sections along his inspection trip from PyinOoLwin Railway Station in Mandalay Division to Lashio Railway station in Shan State.

Yesterday, the minister inspected railroads and bridges from PyinOoLwin railway Station to Htonbo Railway Station. He give instruction on repair of the damaged parts and other work sectors.

(11) Minister for Transport inspects Beaver 1200 Dredger

YANGON, 17 April-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay, Deputy Director-General of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems U Aye Min and officials arrived at Nan Thida Jetty this morning.

Deputy Director (Dredging) of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems U Aung Yi reported on structure of Beaver 1200 Dredger and the support ship and Engineer in-charge Mr Moerkerken of IHC in Holland on capacity of the dredger. The minister and party inspected the dredger and the ship. The minister gave instructions on conducting the multiplier course for the crew and the systematic manning of the vessels.

The dredger is 26.30 metres long and 6.69 metres wide. It can dredger up to 10 metres. The support ship is 10 metres long and five metres wide with the depth of 1.8 metres. The capacity of the crane installed on board is 12 ton/metre. The dredger, the support ship, 1,00 metres pipelines and spare parts for three years cost US$ 2.01 million.


(12) Myanma Railways financial rules special training course opens

YANGON, 17 April-Special financial rules training course No 10 co-organized by School for Training and Skill Development Division of Auditor-General s Office and Myanma Railways of Ministry of Rail Transportation was opened at the  training hall of head office of Myanma Railways this morning. Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye - and Managing Director U Aye Mu of Myanma Railways spoke on the occasion.


(13) Buddha Pujaniya of Twantay Shwehsandaw Pagoda opens

YANGON, 17 April- A ceremony to open Buddha Pujaniya of Shwehsandaw Pagoda in Twantay Township was held in front of the archway of northern stairway of the pagoda yesterday morning. In the office of Pagoda Board of Trustees, members of the Sangha recited parittas. Then, the congregation donated provisions to the Sayadaws and shared merits gained Recitation of Maha Pathana treatise,  soon  offering ceremony and festivities are being held in the Pujaniya which will last till 20 April.

(14) Derailment claims seven lives, injures 24

YANGON, 17 April- Yangon-bound No 2 Passenger Train, which left Mottama at 11.00 am yesterday, derailed and four carriages turned over at Mile Post No 135/3 at 1.10 pm after pulling out of Thaton Station.

Soon after the derailment, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Commander of No 44 LID Brig-Gen Nay Win and officials, doctors of Mon State arrived the scene and. together with Tatmadaw members and members of Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Union Solidarity and Development Association, attended to the needs. The derailment claimed seven lives including two men, three women and two children, and injured 24 persons including 12 men and 12 women. They were given medical treatment by specialists at Thaton Township Hospital. Commander Maj-Gen Myint Aung and Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin visited the injured at the hospital, and attended to their requirements. Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung also arrived the scene and saw to it that trains run regularly.


(15) ISD Badminton Tournament on 20-29 April

YANGON, 17 April The 32rd Inter-State/Division Badminton Tournament and First Great Wall National Badminton Championship organized by Sports and Physical Education Department and Myanmar Badminton Federation will be held at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna from 20 to 29 April.


(16) Border area nationals on tour in Yangon

YANGON, 17 April Border area nationals currently here to participate in Maha Thingyan festival visited Meilamu Pagoda, Tooth Relic Pagoda, Pyidaungsu Ayeyeiknyein, and People s Square yesterday. They visited the National Museum this morning.

(17) Yangon Mayor inspects poultry farms in Htaukkyant

YANGON, 17 April- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay inspected poultry farms and construction of new poultry farms in Htaukkyant, Mingaladon Township this morning. Mayor U Ko Lay gave instructions on systematic raising of hens and successful implementation of targets and fulfilled the requirements. He also inspected fingerling breeding farm.


(18) 2.611 kilos of opium seized in Pinlaung

Y ANGON, 17 April-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force acting on information searched Maung Aye s house, Kapatain Village, Mwaypyin village-tract, Pinlaung Township, Shan State (South) and arrested Maung Aye together with 2.611 kilos of opium on April 4. Action is being taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(19) Hlawga Park Festival begins

YANGON 17 April - A festival was opened at Hlawga Park at Htaukkyant in Mingaladon Township this morning with a view to enhancing people s s knowledge and participation in forest conservation . and management.

The festival will enable the visitors to understand how Myanmar is laying down and implementing the natural environmental conservation plans in line with the guidance of the Head of State said Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun at the ceremony.

(20) 27 Monyo NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 17 April-Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-seven members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on S November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party Politics of NLD.
