(1)Secretary-1 attends opening of sugar mills in  Tatkon and Yedashe Township

YANGON, 15 March - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the deputy  ministers, Chief of Staff (Air), officials of the State Peace and  Development Council Office and officials left here for Toungoo  this morning by Tatmadaw flight.

The Secretary-1 and party arrived at No 5 Sugar Mill (Myohla) in  Myohla in Yedashe Township.

A ceremony to open No 5 Sugar Mill (Myohla) was held at the mill  this morning.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally opened the mill.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and  Managing Director of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise U Myo Myint  reported on facts about the factory, machines installed and  power, sugar production, targets and arrangements for supply  of sugarcane.

The Secretary-l gave instructions on full cultivation of  sugarcane for sufficient cultivation techniques and providing  assistance to sugarcane growers.

The Secretary-l then presented fruit basket to Vice Department  Manager of China National Heavy Machinery Corporation  MR Liu Bei Zhi.

Project Director of No 5 Sugar Mill (Myohla) Major Soe Win  presented a commemorative pennant to the Secretary-1. Secretary-l  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard of the mill.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Vice Department Manager of China  National Heavy Machinery Corporation Mr Liu Bei Zhi formally  opened the mill.

The Secretary-l and party started milling of sugarcane. The  Secretary-1 and party inspected the mill.

The Secretary-1 and party, accompanied by member of the State  Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division  Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, went  to Sakyin Village in Madaya Township.

Minister U Pan Aung and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win reported  on sculpture of alabaster Buddha image and conveyance of the  alabaster Buddha image to Yangon.

Chairman of Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon  U Thaung Han and stone on arrangements for carving of Buddha  image in accord with the characteristics of Lord Buddha. The  Secretary-l gave instructions.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the 700-ton alabaster. The  Secretary-1 and party inspected the route chosen for conveyance  of carved Buddha image.

A ceremony to open No 1 Sugar Mill (Dahatkon) was held at the  mill in Tatkon Township.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Assistant General Manager  Mr Yang Xiao Jun of Guang Dong New Technology Import and Export  formally opened the mill.

A ceremony to hand over new building for Basic Education Primary  School to Education Department was held in Ayechantha Sanpya  Village in Tatkon Township this morning, with an address by  Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Minister for Education U Than Aung and Managing Director of  Aden Group Co Ltd U Chit Khaing formally opened the new building.

Managing Director U Chit Khaing reported on donation of K 7.4  million new building.

The Secretary-1 said today, Dahatkon Sugar Mill and the new  building for the school were inaugurated. Sinthay Dam was  already built in the region for the development of the region.  The grand school building is the result of the cooperative  efforts between the government and the local people. The  government is opening doors for the people to take part in  implementing the education promotion programmes. It is a  pleasure for the students and the parents that the school  building was constructed by Aden Group Co Ltd. Local elders,  members of the school board of trustees and teachers should  collectively maintain the building. Teachers should nurture  their pupils to become brilliant in all sectors and to possess  the sprit to preserve the traditions and culture, the Union  Spirit and patriotism.

Managing Director U Chit Khaing of Aden Group Co Ltd handed  over the related documents to Minister for Education U Than Aung.

He also presented K 1 million to the trust fund of the school.

Township Education Officer U Kyaw Maung spoke words of thanks.

After inspecting the building the Secretary-l and party cordially  greeted local people.

(2) Deputy Prime Ministers view 37th Myanma Gems Emporium Year 2000

YANGON, 15 March - Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung  Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun viewed the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium Year  2000 sponsored by Central Committee for the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium  this morning.

The 37th Myanma Gems Emporium is being held in Myanma Gems Museum on  Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.

The Deputy Prime Ministers were welcomed by Chairman of the Central  Committee for the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium Deputy Minister for  Mines U Myint Thein, Secretary Managing Director of Myanma Gems  Enterprise U Khin Oo and members.

The deputy prime ministers viewed the modem jewellery produced  by Myanmar VES Co Ltd, polished gems and jade, jade figurines  to be sold at fixed prices, private jewellery shops and paintings  illustrated with pieces of gems, jade blocks which are being  displayed on the ground floor, uncut jade lots on display in the  compound of the museum, jewellery and gems lots and pearl lots  on the top floor.

Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen  Tin Tun attended the second day for the sale of jade lots through  competitive bidding and left there in the afternoon.


(3) First meeting of heads of Mission of Myanmar Embassies,  Permanent Missions and Consulates-General of the Ministry  of Foreign Affairs concludes

YANGON, 15 March - The future trend round-table discussions of  Myanma Foreign Policy of the first meeting of heads of Mission  of Myanmar Embassies, Permanent Missions and Consulates-General  of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held at Wunzin Minyaza Hall  of the Ministry, with an address by Minister for Foreign Affairs  U Win Aung.

Minister U Win Aung said today's panel discussions of this kind  and dimension was the first ever one the Foreign Ministry had  in its existence since its inception on 17 March 1947.

It timely to review the foreign policy direction in changing world  situations when Myanmar entered a new century and it was also  timely since Foreign Ministry would be celebrating its 53rd  Anniversary of establishment in few days, he said.

He said he believed that the discussions would bring about important  insights into the future direction of Myanmar foreign policy.

Retired Ambassador U Tin Tun submitted paper on the emerging  international situation and implications for Myanmar,  Director-General of ASEAN Affairs Department U Aye Lwin on the  future of regional and inter-regional cooperation in South east  Asia, Adviser U Pe Thein Tin on enhanced engagement in multilateral  forums, retired Ambassador U Hla Maung on the role of trade and  investment for economic development, Director-General of  International Organizations and Economic Department U Kyaw Tint  Swe on human resources development, retired ambassador U Ba Thwin  on south-south cooperation and north- south dialogue and  Director-General of Consular, International Laws and Treaties  and Research Department U Thein Myint on knowledge based society.

(4) Minister for H & T meets guests

YANGON, 15 March - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw  Lwin met Managing Director Mr Jackie Wong of Hong Thai Citizen Travel Co and party at his office at 1 pm today.


(5) Training on Implementation of 15-year Drug Abuse Control  Programme opened 

YANGON, 15 March - Training on Implementation of 15-year Drug  Abuse Control Programme co-organized by the Ministry of Health  and WHO was opened at the training school for health staff on  Ashay Market Street in Dagon Township this morning.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein made a speech on the occasion, speaking  about the danger of narcotics including amphetamine to the youths.

He also elaborated on measures of fighting against narcotics and  programmes for ensuring decrease in number of drug addicts.

The course is being attended by 70 doctors from states and divisions.


(6) Minister for Industry l inspects factories 

YANGON, 15 March - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied  by heads of department concerned and officials, inspected major repair  work at Thayet Cement Plant on 13 March.

The repair work is being carried out with engineers from Japan and  China. He heard reports presented by officials concerned including  the manager of the plant and gave instructions.

The minister then proceeded to Pyay where he inspected Myasanda  Soft Drink and Ice Factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries. He met  officials there and discussed with them distribution of quality  soft drinks at reasonable prices.

The minister also inspected the textile and ceramics factories in  Thayawady.

(7) Minister inspects booth of Ministry of Commerce

YANGON, 15 March - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone accompanied  by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen.Kyaw Hsan and officials arrived at the  Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

The Minister and party inspected the booth of Ministry to be exhibited  at the ministries exhibition at the Exhibition of the 55th Anniversary  Armed Forces Day.

The minister gave instructions on the preparations to the responsible  officials.


(8) Minister meets Ambassador of Japan 

YANGON, 15 March - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs  Brig-Gen Win Tin met Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Kazuo Asakai  who has completed his tour of duty at his office this afternoon.

Also present were Managing Director U Maung Maung Tin of Directorate  of Telecommunications and officials.


(9) Sixth Meeting of Fourth State Central Working Committee of  Sangha begins
 
YANGON, 15 March - The Sixth Meeting of the Fourth State Central Working  Committee of the Sangha began in Maha Pasana Cave, Kaba Aye, this morning.

Present were State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, Sayadaws of the State Sangha  Maha Nayaka Committee led by Chairman Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha  Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Sobhita, Sayadaws  of Fourth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, Adviser at  the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung,  Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint,  Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the  Sasana U Sann Lwin and officials of RAD and DPPS. Sayadaw Agga Maha  Kammathanacariya Bhaddanta Okkansa, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta  Sucitta, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Vanna, Sayadaw Agga Maha  Pandita Bhaddanta Rajinda Bhivamsa and Sayadaw Bhaddanta ,Candavamsa  were elected as Oavada Sayadaws of the meeting.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita chaired the meeting with Joint Secretary  of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita  Bhaddanta Labasami as master of ceremonies.

The meeting agenda was then read.

Ovadakathas of State Ovadacariya Sayadaws were read by Sayadaws.

Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja  Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara  read the Ovadakatha of Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita.

In his Ovadakatha, the Sayadaw said it is now 20 years since Sangha  committees have been formed at different levels in serving the Sasana  affairs for purification, perpetuation and propagation of the Sasana.

Though cent per cent success was not achieved during the 20 years  of endeavours, wrongful actions could be deterred in accord with  the Dhamma, the State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkathos could be opened,  Nikaya examinations could be held in a new form and rules for the  members of the Sangha could be laid down during the period.

All the members of the Sangha should strive without fail for the  State Central Working Committee of the Sangha to become a reliable  organization, bearing in mind that the duty of the Working Committee  is to perpetuate the Sangha organizations at different levels.

The members of the Sangha should understand and observe the Viniya  rules. Courses for abbot Sayadaws and Viniya courses should be  conducted as suggested in the previous meetings. The government  had already presented books of Viniya to all the monasteries in  the nation. Arrangements should be made for the members of the  Sangha to study the book. Examinations on the book should be held  region-wise under the sponsorship of State Sangha Maha Nayaka  Committee Sayadaws and Sayadaws of State Central Working Committee  of the Sangha. All the members of the Sangha should be aware of  the fact that the Sasana will perpetuate only when all the members  of the Sangha observe the Viniya rules.

Mutual respect is one of the five essential requirements for  perpetuation of the Sasana. Mutual respect means sharing due  regard between the members of the Sangha, novices, laypersons.

The Sayadaws then discussed religious matters.

The first day session ended in the evening.

(10) 42,634 eligible voters of Kalay submit petitions expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Thein Win

YANGON, 15 March - A total of 42,634 eligible voters of Kalay Township  Constituency-2, Sagaing Division, submitted signed declarations ex  pressing no confidence in U Thein Win elected as Pyithu Hluttaw  Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty  Democracy General Election from Kalay Township Constituency-2 and no  support for him at the rallies held in Tintha, Kyaw Ywa, Nat Chaung,  Htaukkyant and Thazi Villages of the township from 28 to 29  December 1999.

A total of 2,500 local people of Tintha, Ashisi, Kyaukpyoke, Yayshin  and Kokko village-tract rallied at Tintha Village.

Farmer U Myint Aung from Tintha Village, on behalf of the voters,  expressed no confidence in U Thein Win of National League for  Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Swe Pe from Tintha  Village presented declarations expressing no confidence in  U Thein Win and no support for him signed by voters to member  of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission  U Nyein.

Altogether 2,400 local people of Kyaw Ywa, Khontoe, Myauksi, Taungsi  and Ywasi Ywatha village-tracts rallied in Kyaw Ywa Village.

Farmer Daw Khin May Win from Kyaw Ywa Village, on behalf of the  voters, expressed no confidence in U Thein Win of National League  for Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Maung presented  declarations expressing no confidence in U Thein Win and no support  for him signed by voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-commission U Myint Wai.

Altogether 2,400 local people of Nat Chaung, Nat Myaung, Inndin,  Pauktaw and Nhapha village-tracts rallied in Natchaung Village.

Farmer U Khin Maung from Natchaung Village, on behalf of the voters,  expressed no confidence in U Thein Win of National League for  Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U San Po presented  declarations expressing no confidence in U Thein Win and no support  for him signed by voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-commission U Myint Wai.

A similar ceremony was held at Htaukicyant Village.

Altogether 1,500 local people of Htaukkyant, Kinpunchan and Htoma  village- tracts rallied in Htaukkyant Village.

U Htay Lay from Htaukkyant Village, on be- half of the voters,  expressed no confidence in U Thein Win of National League for  Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Ba Than presented  declarations expressing no confidence in U Thein Win and no support  for him signed by voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election sub-commission U Nyein Ko. Altogether 2,500 local  people of Thazi, Kanpale, TaungU, Uyin and Myohla village-tracts  rallied in Thazi Village.

Farmer U Maung Cho from Thazi Village, on behalf of the voters,  expressed no confidence in U Thein Win of National League for  Democracy and no support for him. Then, U Kyaw Sein and U Sein  Pe from Thazi Village presented declarations expressing no  confidence in U Thein Win and no support for him signed by voters  to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Khin Maung Aye.

Out of 58,991 eligible voters of Kalay Township Constituency-2, 23,168 or 39.27 per cent voted for U Thein Win of NLD in 1990  Multiparty Democracy General Election.

The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no  confidence in U Thein Win totalled 42,634 or 72.27 per cent.

(11) 3943 stimulant tablets seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 15 March - A combined team comprising members of local  intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on intermission,  searched room No 1, Man Shwe Myo guest house, eastern Aung Nan  Yeiktha Ward, Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay on 10 March, and  arrested Ma Aye Shwe (a) Ma Lo Sein, daughter of U Yan Sai, Kwekha  Hmawthitkon block, Phakant Township, together with 3943 stimulant  tablets.

Action is being taken against her under the Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic Substances Law.
 


(12) 0.15 kg of Heroin seized in Mongshu

YANGON, 15 March - A combined team comprising members of local  intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information,  while waiting on the road near Dhamma Pala monastery, Hsai-Hlyan  region, Mongshu Yadanamye, Mongshu Town- ship, Southern Shan  State, on 6 March, searched and arrested Ma Eilay, daughter of  U Aikyon, Hsaik-pha Village, near Nanttain Bazaar, Hsai- Hlyan  region together with 0.15 kgs of heroin.

Action is being taken against her under the Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic Substances Law.

(13) 33 Ngapudaw NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 15 March - Thirty-three members resigned from the National  League for Democracy of Ngapudaw Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Thirty-three members of Ngapudaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division,  of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngapudaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in the party politics of NLD.
