(2) Secretary-l attends opening ceremony of Ngw Hsaung Beach Resort

YANGON, 11 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,  accompanied by ministers, deputy ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), the Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft  this morning and arrived at Ngwe Hsaung Beach Resort in Pathein Township, Ayeyawady Division at  8.50 am today. Then, the opening ceremony of Ngwe Hsaung Beach Resort: was held at the resort at  9.45 am, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

First, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address. He said:

May I first of all extend a most cordial welcome to Ngwe Hsaung Beach resort and say how happy we  are to have all of you at this grand opening ceremony of the Ngwe Hsaung Beach Resort.

This is indeed a most auspicious day not only for the people of Ngwe Hsaung and Ayeyawady Division  but also for the entire country as well. The emergence of an international standard beach resort in Ngwe  Hsaung represents a historic landmark in our endeavours for modernization and progress of the nation.

As is well known, the State Peace and Development Council is striving for a balanced and equitabledevelopment of all the regions of the nation and for raising the standard of living and quality of life of the people. In these efforts, the Government is also paying special attention to tourism industry in the
country. In this regard, the development of international standard beach resorts to attract foreigners as  well as domestic tourists assumes great significance.

Therefore, under the direction our Chairman Senior General Than Shwe, we have in recent years established the Kan Thayar Beach Resort in Rakhine State and now the Ngwe Hsaung beach resort.

The Ngwe Hsaung area, which you witness today, is very different from what it was only a few months  back.   Although it is situated only 29 miles from Pathein city, it remains largely inaccessible. The area  consisted of a cluster of small Kayin, Rakhine and Bamar villages who were earning their liveli-hood from the production of fish paste and selling of sea- shells and other marine souvenirs to the Chaung Tha beach resort.

But the Government, realizing the tourism potential of the area, decided to develop it into a beach resort.  The 9 miles of unspoiled natural beach in a crescent shape offers a unique opportunity for people to  come and enjoy the sea, sun and sand for relaxation and enjoyment. The tremendous improvement in  transportation infrastructure means that people from Yangon and other places, can now reach an international beach resort in a matter of hours. Moreover, as the standard of living of the Myanmar people have greatly improved in recent times, more and more people are travelling throughout the country looking for more areas to relax and enjoy life.

That Ngwe Hsaung beach resort will bring great economic and social progress of the region is obvious  to all. In this regard, I wish to congratulate Secretary-3 Lt Gen Win Myint and Chairman of the Ayeyawady Division and Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann who closely supervised the project. My thanks also go to 18 national entrepreneurs who have confidence in  the project and who, in a very short time of two months, were able to construct the facilities that you see  today.

May I also add that even as we develop the area as a tourist spot, we give full attention to preserving  and protecting the natural beauty and the ecology of the beach and its surrounding areas.

Today, you have had a chance to witness at first hand the scenic beauty of a natural beach.  It is therefore our hope that you will be able to spread the word to the world of the emergence of a new international-standard beach resort in Myanmar. We also hope that you will come back again to the beach with your family and friends.
