(1) General Maung Aye inspects development tasks in Kachin State and Mandalay International  Airport Project

YANGON, 9 March - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander- in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye left Tanai for Shadusut Village, Phakant Township, at 9 am on 7 March, and met with the Tatmadaw members and their , families.

The General also met with the Tatmadaw members and their families at Dunban Village, Phakant Township.

Next, the General and party went to Phakant by helicopter, where they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Tin Shein and officials.

The General and party inspected teaching aids donated to Phakant Basic Education High School by Phakant Township Peace and Development Council at the guest house of the township.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Hla Myint handed over teaching aids worth 3.5 million kyats to Township Education Officer Daw Mya Mya Cho.

Chairman of Phakant Urban Project Implementation Committee Tactical Operations Commander Col Tin Shein reported on the surfacing of streets with tar in Phakant, construction of Phakant-Lonkhin-Kamaing Road and Lonkhin-Tawmaw Road and the jade mining in Phakant Township.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Hla Myint reported on construction of Tamakhan-Phalamon-Khanti Road, cultivation of paddy and cold season crops in the township, staff welfare work and requirements of health and education.

The General gave guidance on the jade mining in Phakant Township, working with sincerity and goodwill, arrangements to develop Phakant, cultivation of paddy to achieve regional sufficiency, extension of cultivation of kitchen crops and the breeding of fish and livestock.

Afterwards, the General and party toured Phakant.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung inspected the office of Township Information and Public Relations Department, and met with employees.

Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met with employees of Township Development Affairs Department.

Minister for Education U Than Aung inspected Phakant Basic Education High School and met with teachers.

The General and party inspected Hsama Jade Mining Camp in Phakant Township in the afternoon, Officials reported on the jade mining.

The General gave guidance on the work and inspected conditions of plots of Jade mining.

Then, the General and party inspected Htelonesein Jade Mining Camp in Phakant Township.

Afterwards, the General and party went to Myitkyina by helicopter, where they were welcomed by Commander of Myitkyina Air Force Base Brig-Gen Bo Kyi, Deputy Commander of Northern Command Col San Tun and officials.

The General and party proceeded to Putao, where they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Han Myint, Chairman of Putao District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Myo and officials.

The Putao District Peace and Development Council chairman reported on extension of the runway of Putao Airport, and the General gave guidance on the work.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, together with Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, met with employees from Putao District and Putao, Sumprabum and Machambaw Townships at the office of Putao District Information and Public Relations Department and presented gifts to the employees.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo also inspected Township People's Hospital and gave instructions to the medical staff.

The General met with Tatmadaw members and their families of the regional battalion at the battalion in Putao yesterday morning.

Next, the General and party visited Nwenanwein (a) Myin-tha-aye Pagoda, and made donations to the pagoda funds.

The General and party then paid respects and offered alms to Bhaddanta Indacara and Sayadawsg of the monastery in Putao.

The Secretary-2 and ministers met with departmental officials, employees and local residents of Putao District and townships at the city hall.

Chairman of Putao Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Oo reported on measures being taken for water supply in Putao and requirements.

Chairman of Nagmon Township Peace and Development Council U Kyi Win and Chairman of Khaunglanphu Township Peace and Development Council U Khaung Lan Di reported on matters related to development of Machambaw and Nagmon, Nagmon-Khaunglanpu motor road and education and health.

Minister Col Thein Nyunt and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun explained about water supply in the town and measures to upgrade roads respectively.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Minister U Than Aung explained about arrangements jointly made by the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Education to enable students from various regions to study their school lessons on television programmes and the appointing new teachers.

Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo explained about the fulfillment of requirements of hospitals from Putao and Machambaw Townships.

The Secretary-2 said the Government is taking measures to fulfil requirements for the development of all the regions. Those who mainly strive for regional development, are departmental employees and local people. The departmental employees need to cooperate with local people in working for regional development.

Now that Putao-Myitkyina motor road has already been constructed, arrangements are being made to improve the conditions of roads linking one township after another in the region.

Minister U Than Aung presented teaching aids for Putao and Machambaw Townships to the officials.

General Secretary of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Than Aung and members of the central executive committee met with the secretary, executive committee members and organizers of Putao Township USDA.

Minister Col Thein Nyunt went to Training School for Development of National Youths from Border Areas and presented gifts to the students.

The Secretary-2 and the ministers left Putao for Machambaw by car at 6.00 am and met with authorities of Machambaw Township.

The chairman of Township Peace and Development Council reported on requirements for development of the township.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on repair of Putao-Machambaw road, Machambaw-Nagmon motor road, extension of cultivation of paddy and kitchen crops and matters related to national solidarity.

The ministers, the deputy ministers and officials inspected respective offices and departments. The Secretary-2 and ministers posed for a photograph at the Malikha Suspension bridge together with local people and left for Putao.

The General and party left Putao for Mandalay International Airport by air in the afternoon.

The General and party inspected construction of the building of Mandalay International Airport and the runway.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported on implementation of Mandalay International Airport Project and construction of motor roads leading to the airport and the bypass.

The General gave guidance on the work.

The General and party arrived back here by Tatmadaw flight at 7.50 pm.

(2) Secretary-l previews 37th Myanma Gems Emporium Year 2000

YANGON, 9 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt viewed the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium in the Year 2000 this morning.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-l arrived at the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium to be held in Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Page la Road at 8 am today.

They were welcomed by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, deputy ministers, members of the Central Committee for the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium and officials.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the polished gems and jade, jade figurines to be sold at fixed prices, private jewellery shops and paintings illustrated with pieces of gems, jade blocks which are being displayed on the ground floor, uncut jade lots on display in the compound of the museum, jewellery and gem lots and pearl lots on the top floor.

Officials conducted the Secretary-l round the emporium.

The Secretary-l gave necessary instructions to them.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then inspected the Myanma Gems Museum and left there.


(3) Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung addresses conclusion of journalism  course

YANGON, 9 March - The closing ceremony of the journalism course No 1/99 sponsored by the News and Periodicals Enterprise of the Ministry of Information was held at 1 pm today at the training hall of the New Light of Myanmar on Strand Road here and Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered a closing address.

Course Supervisory Committee Secretary Director (News) of the News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay) acted as master of ceremonies.

First, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered a closing address.

In his address, the Minister said that it is a milestone in the journalist field as the NPE has successfully conducted the journalism course No 1/99. In implementing the aims and objectives laid down by the State, the news and periodicals also plays an important role, he observed. In addition, journalism is an effective tool in serving the interest of the citizens, he pointed out. The Minister further said that as today is the time for making efforts to ensure the nation to become modern and developed, the journalist trainees are to up hold Our Three Main National Causes which are the national objectives of the State, and strive in implementing the Twelve Political, Economic and Social Objectives laid down. Our country has to establish own national economy independently, he said. In doing so, it depends on human resources, natural resources, skill and physical proficiency to achieve success, he observed. Hence, the social objectives for promoting the educational capabilities of the citizens are laid down and being implemented, he said. While the Government is making efforts for raising the levels of wisdom, knowledge and outlooks of the people, the Ministry of Information is contributing to that end effectively, he said. The trainees, on their part, are to take part in the endeavours enthusiastically, he said. The theoretical and practical training period of five months is in fact, the basic lessons on journalism and the trainees are to make continued efforts for gaining further knowledge and experience, the Minister stressed. He also thanked the veteran journalists including the principal and officials concerned for their contributions in conducting the course. The State leaders occasionally stressed the objectives and goals of the State and all those concerned are to actively and enthusiastically participate in discharging the information duties with a view to developing the country within the framework of objectives and policies of the State, he said.

Next, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented the first prize to Major Tun Oo of Directorate of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare of the Ministry of Defence; the second prize to Daw Su Su Myaing of Information and Public Relations Department (Head Office) of the Ministry of Information; the third prizes to Capt Lin Aung of Directorate of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare of the Ministry of Defence and Police Sub-Inspector Daw Than Than Nyunt of Yangon Division Police Force of the Ministry of Home Affairs. As regards publishing of newspaper, the Minister presented the first prize to Pyi Mandaing group; the second prize to Doh Pyidaungsu group; the third prize to Myoset Thit group and the consolation prize to Zartiman group. On behalf of respective group members, group leaders concerned received the prizes.

Then, the Minister presented certificates to Lt-Col San Nyein of the Ministry of Defence who received on behalf of the trainees. The Minister also presented gifts of honour to Journalist U Myint Kywe who received on behalf of those who gave lectures at the course. After the course conclusion ceremony, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, course instructors and trainees posed for a documentary photograph. Afterwards, the Minister inspected the exhibition of documentary photos on the course, newspapers published during the course and photos on newspaper publishing works.

The five-month journalism course was attended by 45 trainees. They are ten from NPE ten from IPRD six from MRTV two trainees from PPE one from MPE, eight from the Ministry of Defence, two from the Ministry of Home Affairs and six from the Union Solidarity and Development Association.  Of the 45 trainees, 33 were men and 12 were ladies.

(4) Central Committee for Organizing 37th Myanma Gems Emporium holds meeting

YANGON, 9 March - The Central Committee for Organizing the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium held its second meeting at Myanma Gems Emporium on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this evening with an address by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint.

The minister made a speech.

The sub-committees reported on respective tasks, and a general round of discussions followed.

The minister and the members of the Central Committee gave suggestions.
 


(5) Ministry of Industry-1 honours athletes and outstanding personnel

YANGON, 9 March - A ceremony to honour the athletes and outstanding personnel of Ministry of Industry-l was held at the training hall of Directorate of Industries this evening, attended by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung.

Directors-general, managing-directors and advisers of the Ministry also presented prizes to o personnel, course instructors and athletes.


(6) Minister for Commerce meets delegation of Swiss-Thai Chamber of Commerce

YANGON, 9 March - Minister for Commerce Brig Gen Pyi Sone met President Mr Paul Somm of Swiss-Thai Chamber of Commerce and party at his office this afternoon.

They cordially and openly discussed commerce, economic and investment matters.

(7) Minister for Sports leaves for Malaysia

YANGON, 9 March - Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint left here by air this morning for Malaysia to attend the Council meeting of SEAGF to be held from 10 to 11 March and the meeting of the SEAGAME in the New Millennium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The minister was accompanied by joint-Secretary of MOC Deputy Director of Ministry of Sports U Khin Maung Lwin and Deputy Director U Tin Win.


(8) Chairperson of MMCWA lays cornerstone for construction of delivery room of    Kyauktan Township MCWA

YANGON, 9 March - A ceremony to lay cornerstone for the construction of delivery room of Kyauktan Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association in Kyauktan Township, Yangon South District was held at the construction site this morning.

Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe placed the casket containing nine precious gems into the foundation.

At the auspicious time, Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Daw Marlar Tint and officials laid the cornerstones.

Adviser of Myanmar Calendar Board U Kyaw read the stone inscription.

Then, Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and officials sprinkled scented water on the foundation and performed the ritual of gold and silver shower.

Afterwards, cash donation ceremony for the construction of the delivery room was held. Wellwishers U Sein Lwin-Daw Phyu Phyu Khaing of White House Restaurant presented K 2 million and wellwishers U Than Lwin- Daw Lwin Lwin Oo and family of Steel Stone Co Ltd K 100,000 to Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe. Daw Kyu Kyu Swe spoke words of thanks.

(9) 31 Taze NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 9 March - Thirty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taze Township, Sagaing Division.

Thirty-one members of Taze Township NLD, Sagaing Division of their own accord, resigned. by sending letters of resignation to Taze Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 6 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
