(1) Multimedia teaching centres opened at Basic Education Schools in Dedaye, Bogalay and Labutta

YANGON, 4  March - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and officials, left here for Dedaye Township in Ayeyawady Division by helicopter this morning.

A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre was held at No 1 Basic Education High School in Dedaye Township, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA and social organizations, well-wishers, officials of No I Basic Education Department, the township education officer, members of School Board of Trustees, members of Parent-Teacher Association, Headmistress Daw Aye Khin Myat, teachers and students.

Headmistress Daw Aye Khin Myat and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Myint Thein formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-l formally unveiled the signboard of the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected printed media (reading corner), computer aided instruction, computer application and E-mail, language lab, projected media, electronic media (video system), domestic science, drawing rooms and arts rooms and observed skill demonstration of students.

Daw Hla Yi, on behalf of well-wishers, presented K 4,370,000 for the school to Headmistress Daw Aye Khin Myat.

Headmistress Daw Aye Khin Myat reported on the purpose of opening the centre and installation of modern teaching aids.

Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Myint Thein reported on efforts for opening the centre.  Next, the Secretary-1 presented video and cassette tapes to Headmistress Daw Aye Khin Myat. The Secretary-l signed in the visitor s book.

The Secretary-1 then delivered an address.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party had photo taken together with members of School Board of Trustees, members of PTA, well-wishers, the headmistress, teachers and students.  The Secretary-l and party arrived in Bogalay, where they were welcomed by members of Bogalay Township Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, members of USDA and local people.

Headmistress Daw Nyo Yin reported on all-round development of the students and efforts for teaching of subjects of international standard by opening of multimedia teaching centre. The Secretary-l presented teaching aid video and cassette tapes to Headmistress Daw Nyo Yin. The Secretary-l signed in the visitor’s book.

Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Tin Oo reported on development of student s self-learning habit, use of teaching aids of international standard and providing of teaching aids. The Secretary-l presented teaching aid video and cassette tapes to Headmistress Daw Po. The Secretary-l signed in the visitor s book.

The Secretary-l said multimedia teaching centres were opened nationwide due to the leadership of the government, cooperation of the people, supervision of regional authorities and efforts of the teachers. Myanmar education promotion programmes drafted by skilful scholars and teachers are being implemented by the government in cooperation with well-wishers and the people and achievements have been made. Myanmar students are brilliant and they will become good sons and daughters of the State, intellectuals and intelligentsia and outstanding students by training them with use of modem teaching aids, he said.

He said today Information Technology is developing w idly in the world and the government is also endeavouring for development of schools with the assistance of the people. Intelligence power of our students is on top in South East Asia and their qualifications would be enhanced by teaching them with the use of modern teaching aids, he added. The Secretary-l expressed his satisfaction in the high level of intelligence of students and systematic teaching of the teachers at the multimedia teaching centres of basic education high schools in Pathein, Myaungmya, Pyapon, Kyaiklat and Dedaye Townships. He urged the students to try to become outstanding ones in combination of their diligence and intelligence. The Secretary-l and party had photo taken together with members of School Board of Trustees, members of PTA, well-wishers, the headmistress, teachers and students.

The Secretary-l and party arrived at Myatmawtin Hsandawshin Pagoda in Ngapudaw Township. They were welcomed by Captain Soe Thein (Navy) of Haigyi Station, members of Township Peace and Development Council, departmental personnel, members of USDA and members of Pagoda Board of Trustees.

The Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Myatmawtin Hsandawshin Pagoda and the Secretary-1 donated cash.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing presented donations. The Secretary-1 and party presented offertories to Myatmawtin Sayadaw and inspected preparations for Buddha Pujaniya of the Pagoda. Buddha Pujaniya will be held from 5 to 19 March. People can go by car from Mawtinzun to Ngwedaung. The Secretary-1 and party arrived back here in the evening.

(2) Chief of Staff (Army) inspects drill of parade  columns at Myoma Ground

YANGON 4 March - Chairman of Leading Committee for Organizing the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected parade columns practising drill at the Myoma Ground on Myoma Kyaung Road at 6 am today.

The Chief of Staff (Army) was welcomed by Chairman of Management Committee for Organizing the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min, Chairman of Parade Committee Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Vice-Chairman of Parade Committee Director of Military Training Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, senior military officers and officials.

The Chief of Staff (Army) inspected the drill of the parade columns. He gave instructions on administration, discipline, security and welfare matters and left the Myoma Ground at 6.30 am.

The drill was led by Parade Commander Brig-Gen Htay Oo. Anawrahta Column was led by Col Ye Phone Myint, Kyansittha Column by Col Htay Aung, Bayintnaung Column by Col Khin Maung Myint, Nawadae Column by Captain Maung Maung Thit (Navy), Aung Zeya Column by Col Thein Swe, Hsinbyushin Column by Col Tin Maung Tun (Air), Bandoola Column by Col Thein Oo, Myawady Column by Col Ohn Myint and Aung San Column by Col Soe Yi practised drill.


(3) Minister for Health arrives back

YANGON, 4 March - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein this afternoon arrived back here after holding discussions on regional health activities in Maldives and Sri Lanka of South East Asia Region. Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein acted Chairman of the Board of Ministers of Health in South East Asia Region of World Health Organization.  The minister was welcomed back at the airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Ambassador of Sri Lanka Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa, the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, and officials of WHO office.

Members of the delegation Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint, Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe and Director of Foreign Relations Department of the Ministry of Health Dr Ohn Kyaw also arrived back on the same flight.

(4) Ministers inspect place for Maha Bandoola  Bronze Statue in Danubyu

YANGON, 4 March - Minister for Culture U Win Sein together with Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Director-General U Zaw Than of Fine Arts Department and Rector of University of Culture (Yangon) U Tin Soe arrived at Danubyu this morning. Maubin District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Thein Naing and officials welcomed the ministers and officials.

The ministers and party went to Taungpaw Kyaungtaik near Kyattaikgon in Danubyu where Thadothudhamma Maha Bandoola last fort is located in and inspected site to be kept for Maha Bandoola Bronze Statue. The statue was cast at University of Culture (Yangon).

The ministers and part and local researchers discussed renovation of Maha Bandoola tomb, excavation of ancient city wall and Danubyu Fort and arrangements for implementation of biography and museum of Maha Bandoola.


(5) Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia  concludes visit

YANGON, 4 March - Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Mr Zivadin Jovanovic and the delegation left here by air this morning at the conclusion of the visit to Myanmar at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung.

The guests were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Ambassador of Myanmar to Yugoslavia U Kyar Nyo Chit Pe, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Charge d  Affaires ai of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Mr Miodrag Nilolin.


(6) Malaysian Air Force Commander-in-Chief concludes goodwill visit

YANGON, 4 March - Commander-in-Chief of Malaysian Air Force Lt-Gen Dato Seri Ahmad Saruji Bin Che Rose and wife and party left here for home by special flight this afternoon.

The Commander-in-Chief of Malaysian Air Force and party were seen off at Yangon International Airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander- in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and wife, Commander of Mingaladon Air Base Brig-Gen Thein Myint and wife, Defence Adviser of Malaysian Embassy Lt-Col Harun Bin Hitam and senior military officers.


(7) Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia  held a Press Conference

YANGON, 4 March - Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Mr Zivadin Jovanovic held a Press Conference at Yangon International Airport this morning at the end of his visit to Myanmar.

Present were Ambassador of Yugoslavia Mr Ivan Mrkic, Ambassador of the Union of Myanmar to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia U Kya Nyo Chit Pe, Charge d  Affaires ai of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Myanmar Mr. Miodrag Nikolin, Director- General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun, Director of Political Affairs Department U Hla Pe Than, Chief Editor of Myanma News Agency (Internal) U Zaw Min Thein, Patron of Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win, President of MFCC U Sao Kai Hpa and foreign correspondents, local and foreign journalists and officials.


(8) 150 kilos of Ephedrine powder seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 4 March - A combined team comprising members of regional intelligence unit, acting on information, searched Tin Thein s house, 78th street between 10th and 11th streets, Dawai ward, Aungmyethazan Township. Mandalay on 20 February and arrested Myint Thein (a) Aung Myint Thein, son of U Ba Thein, 44 Block, East Amarahtani Ward, Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay, together with 159 kilos of Ephedrine powder. According to further information, the team arrested Myint Wai, son of U Nyein, Kwai Gyi Ward, Monywa Township on 22nd February in connection with the case. Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(9) 20 Hlinethaya Township NLD members resigned of own accord

YANGON, 4 March - Twenty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Hlinethaya Township, Yangon Division.

Twenty members of Hlinethaya Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlinethaya Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 2 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
