(1)General Maung Aye pays obeisance to Culamani Lawkachantha Pagoda in Taunggyi
 
YANGON, 27 Feb - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, the commanders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, the ministers, senior military officers and officials, paid obeisance to Culamani Lawkachantha Pagoda in Taunggyi on 26 February.

General Maung Aye and party were welcomed by members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

The General and party also paid obeisance to Kassapa Buddha image at Culamani Lawkachantha Pagoda.

The General and party signed in the visitors  book and donated cash.

Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, who was accompanying General Maung Aye, arrived at the worksite office in industrial zone in Aye Tha Ya Myothit, Taunggyi Township on 26 February.

Head of Shan State Industrial Supervision and Inspection Department U Myint Thein reported on work and industrialists requirements. Minister U Aung Thaung attended to the needs.

Member of the Secretariat of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Khin Maung Thein and CEC member Brig-Gen Pyi Sone went to Phekhon Township in Shan State (South) and met executives and members of Loikaw and Phekhon Township USDAs, EC members of state, district and township USDAs and departmental officials at Myanma Economic Bank in Phekhon.

EC members reported on work done. U Khin Maung Thein and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone attended to the requirements.

The minister inspected bank branch of Myanma Economic Bank in Phekhon and gave instructions.


(2) Defence Services C-in-C s Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air)  Golf Tournament concludes
 
YANGON, 27 Feb - The Defence Services Commander- in-Chief s Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Golf Tournament for Year 2000 continued for second and final day today at Aye Tha Ya Golf Club in Taunggyi, Shan State at 6.30 am today.

Deputy Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye took part in the tournament.

The final day tournament was attended by Commander- in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in- Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe win, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, the ministers senior Tatmadaw officers and competing teams. General Maung Aye took part in the tournament and visited the shops at Aye Tha Ya Golf Club.


(3) Construction of Kengtung-Tachilek Road to be completed in three  years
Roads and bridges to be put to best use for regional  development
 
YANGON, 27 Feb - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft this morning and arrived at Pyapon, Ayeyawady Division, at 8.30 am today.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the Silver Jubilee of Maha Ponnya Yama Htanbin Kyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Pyapon Township, merit sharing ceremony for construction of two-storey building of Thawtujana Maniyadana and ceremony to honour Tipitakadhara Dhanima Banagarika Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D) at the Sarthintaik in Pyapon at 9 am today.

Present also were Padana Nayaka Tipitakadhara Dhamma Bandagarika Agga Maha Pandita Professor Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D) and members of the Sangha; Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Councils Office, members of the District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and well-wishers.

Staff Officer U San Thin Hlaing of Yangon Division Religious Affairs Department acted as master of ceremonies.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Five Precepts from Tipitakadhara Dhamma Banagarika Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D).

Members of the Sangha recitted the parittas.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented offertories to members of the Sangha.

Padana Nayaka Tipitakadhara Dhamma Banagarika Agga Maha Pandita Professors Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangalalankara (Ph.D) delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party performed the ritual golden and silver shower to mark the success of the ceremony.
 
The opening ceremony of multi-media teaching centre of Pyapon No 1 Basic Education High School was held at the school this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, ministers, deputy ministers and officials of the State Peace and Development Council, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department, members of the USDA and school heads, members of school board of trustees and Parent-Teacher Association, Headmistress Daw Khin Ohn Myint and students.
Headmistress Daw Khin Ohn Myint and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Than Htay formally opened the multi-media teaching centres of the schools.

Chairman of MEC Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the signboard of the centre.
 
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected printed media ( Reading Corner), language lab, visual presenter, computer aided instruction, electronic media (video System), painting room, domestic science room, music and arts rooms.

Then, the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of No 1 BEHS in Pyapon was held.

Headmistress Daw Khin Ohn Myint explained the upgrading education promotion system, using of teaching aid for the development of learning and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Than Htay on the progress of all-round development of the student and cooperation with district and township Peace and Development Councils, members of Parent Teachers Association and well-wishers for the progress of Basic Education Schools and their activities.

Then, Secretary l-Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented a teaching aid video tape to Headmistress Daw Khin Ohn Myint.
 
He cited the government is also implementing the objectives of all-round development of students and learning of subjects of international standard and said it is satisfactory for participation of regional authorities, members of school board of trustees, parents and teachers and well-wishers in realization of the government s objectives.  The Secretary-l said those who took active part in Myanma independence struggle and outstanding service personnel and literary scholars and famous artistes from Pyapon had emerged.

He spoke of the need for residents in Pyapon to continue to preserve reputation and noble traditions and thanked regional authorities, members of school board of trustees, parents and teachers and well-wishers who participated in opening of multimedia teaching centre.  The Secretary-l and members had photo taken together met members of school board of trustees PTA members, well-wishers, Headmistress, teachers and students.

The Secretary-l met members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of USDA, social organizations and businessmen at Thiri Annawa Hall in Pyapon.
 
Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann reported on measures undertaken for maintenance of law and order and community peace and tranquillity, economic progress, agriculture  The Secretary-l said he and the ministers, the deputy ministers and department officials came to Pyapon to fulfil the requirements for development of townships in the district. According to reports of the commander and the chairman of District Peace and Development Council there is progress in accord with district s economic objectives. He pointed out that the nation will develop if there is political stability, maintenance and law and order and economic progress. After regaining independence there had been no peace and tranquillity and successive governments made efforts for national development but without success, he said.

After taking up the duties of State, the government made efforts to end armed movements that emerged with independence for peace and tranquillity and maintenance of law and order and it is building national solidarity in the Union, he added.

He said Ayeyawady Division is a fertile delta where paddy, sugarcane, beans and pulses and jute can be cultivated and for full cultivation the government is making arrangements to use modern machinery. Permission to cultivate crops in wetlands was given to private entrepreneurs who had investment and technologies, he added.  As arrangements have been made for sufficiency in rice in various states and divisions, emphasis is also being placed on extended cultivation of marketable export crops, he said.

The Secretary-l said the government is implementing the plans for national development especially in border areas that lagged behind in development on priority basis. Under the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, infrastructures such as roads, bridges, power supply and irrigation networks are being built in various parts of the country.

The Secretary-l said that recently, Sittway-Yangon Highway which links Sittway in Rakhine State and Yangon, was built, and Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, himself inaugurated big bridges on the highway.

The Government has already recognized the development achieved in Ayeyawady Division. As it is a division endowed with favourable conditions for development, authorities and departmental personnel are to do their duties conscientiously and work hard for whatever role they are assigned.

Development of townships will ensure that of states and divisions, which in turn engenders that of the nation, and therefore, efforts are to be made for development of townships.

In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged regional authorities and departmental personnel to unitedly work for regional development and to organize the people to participate in this task.

Then, the Secretary-l and party went to Kyaiklat, Ayeyawady Division, where they were welcomed by members of Township Peace and Development Council, departmental personnel, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations and local people.  Afterwards, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of No 2 Basic Education High School in Kyaiklat at 2.45 pm.

Headmistress Daw Mya Yee and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Kin Han formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-l formally unveiled the signboard of the multimedia teaching centre.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer aided instruction room, the computer application and E-mail room, the electronic media (video system) room, the visual presenter, the printed media (reading corner) room, the domestic science room, the painting room and the music room, and observed the skill demonstration of the students Then, a ceremony to, mark the opening of multimedia teaching centre of No 2 BEHS was held in the hall of the school.

Headmistress Daw Mya Yee reported on assistance of district and township authorities and towns elders for the Opening of the multimedia teaching centre and matters related to equipment installed at the centre.

Member of School Board of Trustees Daw Hla Shein reported on academic matters and concerted efforts for the emergence of the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-l presented video and cassette tapes for No 2 BEHS to the headmistress.

Next, the Secretary-1 made a speech.

(4) Secretary-2 inspects agriculture sector projects in Bago Division
 
YANGON, 27 Feb - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected agricultural work in Thanatpin, Waw, Nyaunglaypin and DaikU Townships in Bago Division today.

The Secretary-2 and party left for Thanatpin Township, Bago Division, by car at 6.30 am.

The Secretary-2 inspected cultivation of summer paddy near Bawphyuyoe Creek at the entrance of Thanatpin.

Chairman of Thanatpin Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Thein reported on progress of work in cultivation of summer paddy in Thanatpin Township, arrangements for availability of water and progress of extending summer paddy cultivation.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye reported on assistance provided for extension of summer paddy cultivation, digging of canals and creeks in the township, arrangements for proper flow of water and cultivation of summer paddy on 50,000 acres of land.

Local people reported on repair of the bridge at the town centre and availability of water for summer paddy cultivation.

Township level officials of Irrigation Department and Myanma Agriculture Service replied to their queries. Chairman of Bago District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Tint reported on agricultural work being done in Bago District and measures for supplying water.

The commander gave an additional report.

Director-General of Agricultural Planning Department Dr Mya Maung reported on cultivation of monsoon paddy, summer paddy and pulses and beans in Thanatpin Township.

Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw reported on production and distribution of agricultural machinery.

The Secretary-2 said that Bago Division is one of the divisions on which the State can rely, and it is found that cultivation of summer paddy and pulses and beans in Thanatpin Township is very encouraging.  Efforts are to be made for successful cultivation of crops suitable to the region, and specially, extension of paddy sown-acreage and boosting of paddy yield are to be regarded as a national duty.

If sluice gates are built in Thanatpin Township, the agriculture sector will develop, and therefore, arrangements are to be made to build sluice gates. As regards availability of water in Bago Division, dams and reservoirs have been built with the use of a large sum of money.  However, the Government has to carry out this task in the entire nation, departmental personnel and local people need to do what they can. Departmental personnel are to cooperate with local people in striving for regional development.
 
After meeting with depart mental personnel and farmers, the Secretary-2 and party proceeded to the site of reclamation of fallow and virgin lands in Waw Township being undertaken by Sea Boy Company Ltd.  Managing Director of Sea Boy Company Ltd U Min Naing reported on the granting of permit to carry out reclamation on 4,67Sacre fallow and virgin lands, cultivation of monsoon paddy, summer paddy, pulses and beans, corns and sesamum on 1,485 acres of land, arrangements for cultivation in 2000-2001 and requirements of machinery.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave an additional report.

Director-General Dr Mya Maung reported on providing technology and expertise for reclamation of fallow and virgin lands and agricultural work.

In replying to the reports, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on the work, and inspected agricultural work of Sea Boy Company Ltd.  In the afternoon, the Secretary-2 and party went to Nyaunglaybin Township, and inspected cultivation of kitchen crops on both sides of Yangon-Mandalay Highway at Wewun village-tract.

The commander and officials reported on cultivation of kitchen crops.  After attending to their needs, the Secretary-2 said crops from this region are sent to Yangon, and measures are to be taken to enable the people from Yangon to buy crops at reasonable prices and at the same time, farmers to get profits from the sale of crops.

At Wewun village-tract, chilli, corn, cabbage, cauliflower, tomato and coriander have been grown on 605 acres of land, oil crops on 90 acres, pulses and beans on 1,065 acres and summer paddy on 200 acres.  The Secretary-2 and party went to the construction site of Kawliya Bridge on Yangon- Mandalay Highway in DaikU Township at 2.00 pm.  The senior engineer of Public Works reported on construction of the bridge and progress of work.
 
The Secretary-2 and party also inspected Gatoak Bridge in DaikU Township and gave instructions on construction work.

Afterwards, the Secretary- 2 and party met departmental officials and local farmers at the agricultural education camp at Gatoak Phayagyi in DaikU Township. Director of Construction-1 of Irrigation Department U Maung Maung reported on construction of Bawni Dam and cultivation of monsoon paddy on 6,000 acres of land and summer paddy on 4,500 acres.  Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Myint and officials reported on cultivation of paddy and other crops.  Next, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye reported on construction of Bawni Dam, proper use of irrigated water and cultivation of plants in the catchment area.

Secretary of Township USDA U Ko Htay reported on  participation in cultivation work.

Local farmers reported on farmers  dependence on rain water, cultivation of summer paddy and success of cultivation. Officials also reported on fulfillment for regional development.  Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said as ours is an agricultural country, efforts are being made for all-round development in agriculture. Water is needed for successful cultivation so irrigation projects are being built in suitable places.

He said Bawni Dam was built in DaikU Township and concerted efforts are to be made for triple cropping with the use of irrigated water. Permits were issued to national entrepreneurs who have money, technology and machinery for cultivation in fallow and vacant lands and wetlands, he added.

He urged the farmers to make endeavours for progress of agriculture and the regions in cooperation with national entrepreneurs.  The Secretary-2 and party left for Yangon.

(5) Minister for Transport inspects Loikaw airport and airport building
 
YANGON, 27 Feb - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by officials, arrived at Loikaw Airport, Kayah State, by helicopter yesterday afternoon.

In-charge of Loikaw Airport U Myo Aung of Civil Aviation Department. explained conditions of the airport building and the runway. The minister gave instructions on making the airport green and clean, safe landing and take-off of the aircraft, and maintenance of the airport building.

Assistant Supervisor U Soe Win of Myanma Airways explained sales of air-tickets and number of passengers and District Senior Engineer U Khin Maung Aye of Public Works explained present measurement of the runway and the apron and preparation for the extension project.  Then, the minister gave necessary instructions and inspected the interior of the airport building, the apron and the runway before departure.


(6) Minister inspects Kengtung police station

YANGON, 27 Feb - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing accompanied by the commander of Shan State (East) Police Force and the Joint Commissioner of Shan State (East) General Administration Department, inspected functions of Myanmar Police Force at Kengtung Police Station on 25 February night.

At the police station, the minister gave instructions on implementation of tasks of the Committee for Reforming Management System of Myanmar Police Force, five aims of crime reduction to be implemented, building of a reserve force of the nation in accord with four main tasks, efforts to be made to become prestigious police members, unity of the police force, eradication of narcotic drugs, preventing escape of culprits, to have a sense of responsibility in doing duty and staff welfare. The minister then inspected the patrol route in town.

(7) 118 Shwegu Township NLD members resigned of own accord

YANGON, 27 Feb - One hundred and eighteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Bogone village-tract, Shwegu Township Kachin State.

One hundred and eighteen members of Bogone village-tract, Shwegu Township NLD, Kachin State of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwegu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 15 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
