(1) Secretary-1 on inspection tour of eastern Shan State
 
YANGON, 25 Feb - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, together with member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, left Monehtaw Village, Monehtaw region, Mongton Township, eastern Shan State, on 23 February morning, and arrived at Ponpakyin Village, Mongton Township at 12.35 pm.  They were welcomed there by members of Township Peace and Development Council, departmental personnel, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and local people.  Tactical Operations Commander Col Win Kyi reported on the location and area of Mongton Township, wards and village-tracts covered by the township, arrangements to extend sown acreage and build dams, matters related to education, health and construction of roads and bridges and development tasks including installation of telephone lines.  Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein gave an additional report.
 
The Secretary-l and party arrived at Ponpakyin basic education middle school.  The Secretary-1 met with members of Township Peace and Development Council and departmental employees in the hall of the school.  Then, the Secretary-l presented a TV set, a video cassette recorder, a cassette and video and cassette tapes donated by Myanmar Education Committee and tapes on the life of the Buddha, English textbooks and cassette tapes donate by the minister for education to Headmaster U Thein Lay.  Afterwards, the Secretary-1 presented gifts to the employees.  Next, the Secretary-l and party proceeded to Monghsat, where they were welcomed by Commander of Monghsat Station Col Tun Tun, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental employees, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and families.
 
Monghsat-Tachilek Road, where they were welcomed by national race leader of Special Region-2 of northern Shan State U Pau Yu Yi and members.  The Secretary-1 and party inspected the construction of the bridge.
 
Later, the Secretary-l and party visited the departmental store of Honpan Company Ltd, and proceeded to the basic education high school in Monghsat.  They were welcomed there by Township Education Officer U Sein Maung, Headmaster U Pe Thein, members of the school board of trustees and parent-teacher association, teachers and students.
 
The Secretary-1 and party inspected the multimedia classrooms, the painting room and domestic science room.  Headmaster U Pe Thein reported on academic matters.  The Secretary-1 attended to requirements of teachers and employees.  The Secretary-l handed over a TV set, a video set, cassette and video tapes donated by Myanmar Education Committee and tapes on the life of the Buddha, English textbooks and cassette tapes donated by the minister for education to Headmaster U Pe Thein.
 
After that, the Secretary-l attended the ceremonies to donate provisions to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha and to present clothes to Youth Development Parahita Geha at Dhammayon of Maha Myatmuni Kyaungtaik.  The Secretary-1 and party received the Five Precepts from Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Myatmuni Kyaungtaik Maha Saddhama Jotika Dhaja Bhaddanta Sundaramala.  The Secretary-1 and party offered robes, rice and alms to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.  Congregation shared the merits gained.  The Secretary-l presented uniforms to the Parahita Geha.
 
Yesterday, the Secretary-l met local authorities and departmental personnel at Monghsat District General Administration Department.  He said in the past, there were conflicts between national races due to differences of ideologies and opinions.  Peace is prevailing in the entire country as the present government has made efforts to win back national peace with the conviction that development can be achieved only when there is national solidarity.  The people come to understand the government s true goodwill in striving to win peace for national progress.  During the tours, they have made arrangements for development of socio- economy, health, education, agriculture and production of the people of the region including Monghsat.  Efforts are being made for progress of national economy, trade and transport and permits are being granted to national entrepreneurs to participate more in the national economy; thus national economy and the living standards of the people are improving.  Much capital has been used in implementing the project for development of border areas and national races with the conviction that the true national development is achieving proportionate development among all regions of the country.  Staff discharging duties at border areas should dutifully implement their tasks with the attitude that perpetuation of the Union is the result of national solidarity which can be gained through proportionate development in the nation.  Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein explained implementing of regional development projects in line with the counsel of the Secretary-l.
 
In Mongyang, the Secretary-l met officials of Wa Alternative Development Project.  UNDCP Resident Representative Mr Richard Dickens and Chief Technical Adviser of the project Mr John Bruce Dalton reported on points of the project and progress in implementing it.
 
The Secretary-l said Wa region lacked progress in the past as development under due to insecure situation of the region. At present, extra efforts should be made for the progress of the region, Development of the sectors such as health, clean water supply and agriculture should be conducted.
 
The commander and the respective ministries will render assistance for the successful completion of the project in time.  At Mongpauk Basic Education Primary School, the Secretary-l looked into the requirements presented by departmental personnel.
 
He handed the TV set, video cassette player, cassette and teaching aids presented by Myanmar Education Committee and tapes on Buddha Dhamma, English text books and cassettes presented by the Ministry of Education to the school head.  Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said departmental personnel should strive with the conviction that they are responsible for the progress of the regions of the national races. Harmonious efforts should be made for the progress of transport, education, health and agriculture sectors. Teachers should nurture their pupils to be brilliant, possessing patriotism and Union Spirit.  The Secretary-l and party inspected an agricultural station of Myanma Agriculture Service at Mongpauk.
 
At his meeting with departmental personnel, teachers, local elders and the people at Mongnong village in Monghsat, the Secretary-1 said they were there to look into the requirements in implementing regional tasks for peace and prosperity of the region. As the government is developing the infrastructure in the region, local people should strive for development of their business.  The Secretary-l presented gifts donated by Myanmar Education Committee and the Ministry of Education to the school.  In Mongkhat, the Secretary-l and party heard a report on the number of wards and village-tracts in Metman, Mongkhat and Mongyang townships, the number of households, population, health, education and transport sectors and development of Mongkhat presented by Brig-Gen Than Aung of Mongkhat Station and officials.
 
After inspecting the 25-bed Township Hospital, the Secretary-l and party met departmental personnel.  The Secretary-l presented gifts of MEC and the Ministry of Education to the basic education high school in Mongkhat.  The Secretary-l said the government is striving to narrow the education gap between the towns and villages and for all-round progress of the education sector.  Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Mongyang.  In the hall of the regional battalion, Chairman of Mongyang Township Peace and Development Council U Tint Naing Oo and departmental officials briefed the Secretary-l on regional development tasks including education, health, agriculture and transport.

Giving instructions to them, the Secretary-l spoke of the need for service personnel to always think of fulfilling requirements of the region and to pay attention to organizing the people so that they make efforts for economic development of towns and villages as work can be done fully and there prevails peace and tranquillity in the nation. It is also required to pay attention to enabling the people living in the region to equally enjoy fruits of development and so there flourishes national solidarity and Union Spirit, Departmental personnel are to lead in organisational work so that spirit and morale of the people will be changed and uplifted, he said.  As the local people have come to realize the value of peace, officials concerned are to work in unison for the rule of law and order, effective administration, uplift of living standard of the local people and propagation of Union Spirit, he said.  Afterwards, the Secretary-1 presented gifts to the personnel.  At the Basic Education High School of Mongyang, the Secretary-1 presented television set, video set, cassette recorder and teaching aids, donated by Myanmar Education Committee and tapes on the life of Buddha, English text books and tapes donated by the Ministry of Education to Headmaster U Tu Maung.  In the evening, the Secretary-l and party arrived in Kengtung where they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of Triangle Region Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe, military and civilian officers and USDA members.  The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Khemarahta Byadeikpay Buddha Image there in the evening and made donations.

They also paid homage to Maha Myat Muni Buddha Image in town and made donations.
 
They then arrived back at the Mekong Yeiktha for an overnight stay.

(2) Secretary-2 gives instructions on development of industries of Ministry of Industry-2
 
YANGON, 25 Feb - Patron of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave instructions on development of industries of the Ministry of Industry-2 being established in South Dagon Industrial Zone in the briefing hall of the ministry in South Dagon Industrial Zone this morning. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin reported on locations of factories of the Ministry of Industry-2 and conditions of factories established by entrepreneurs and the Ministry of Industry-2 on a mutually beneficial basis and matters pertaining to investment.  Managing Director of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries U Soe Thein reported on establishment of Myanmar Suzuki Automobile Company Ltd, facts about automobiles and motorcycles manufactured by the company and present productivity and arrangements to boost productivity.  Managing Director of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries U Kyaw Win reported on production of transformers on a mutually beneficial basis, Daewoo Electronic Appliances Industry, the oxygen factory, the acetylene factory, the LPG container factory, the bolt and nut factory and the lead-acid accumulator factory.  Managing Director of Myanma Industrial Construction Service U Ye Tun reported on construction of factories of the Ministry of Industry-2 in South Dagon Industrial Zone.  In replying to their reports, the Secretary-2 said the Government is providing necessary assistance for development of State-owned industries and private industries.  The Ministry of Industry- 2 is directly concerned with heavy industries, and it can be seen that development of the Ministry of Industry-2 is the forerunner of all industries in Myanmar.  In accord with the motto  Leap forward with industrial might,  the Government is providing monetary and material assistance and fulfilling staff requirements with a view to ensuring development of industries of the Ministry of Industry-2.  As market-oriented economic system has been initiated, factories and plants under the Ministry of Industry-2 are to be managed on the basis of market-oriented economic system. Research and development work is to be conducted systematically, and production done in accord with the objectives. Popular consumer goods are to be produced on a commercial scale, and the most important is to produce consumer goods of high quality.  For the development of the entire industrial sector of the State, it is required to carry out production work in coordination with the State owned industrial sector and the private industrial sector.  Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw accepted donations in cash and kind presented for Upper Myanmar Industrial Training School by Myanma Fritz Warner Company Ltd, Myanmar A Caret Transformer Company Ltd, Myanma Suzuki Automobile Company Ltd, Myanma Daewoo Electronic Company Ltd, Myanma Matsushita Electric Work Ltd and Myanmar Daewoo Auto mobile Company Ltd.  Then, the Secretary-2 had a cordial meeting with managing directors of the companies and officials and departmental personnel.
 
Afterwards, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials inspected Suzuki Automobile Factory, the LPG container factory, the dry cell factory, the lead-acid accumulator factory, the bolt and nut factory, A Caret Transformer Factory, construction of the paint spraying workshop of Myanmar Suzuki Automobile Factory, the acetylene factory, the oxygen factory and Daewoo electronic industries.


(3) Secretary-2 gives instructions on rule of law and maintenance  of discipline
 
YANGON, 25 Feb - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave instructions on regional development and maintenance of discipline to officials in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this evening.  Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on co-operation with departments concerned in taking measures for regional development and maintaining discipline.  Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung reported on plans made systematically in cooperation with District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils for rule of law, security and reduction of incidence of crime.  Heads of departments concerned also took part in the discussions on regional development, maintenance of discipline and security.  In replying to the reports, the Secretary-2 said it has been heard that some undesirable and undisciplined events have occurred, and they can have a detrimental effect on rule of law and maintenance of discipline.  The Secretary-2 also added that therefore, administrative officers at various levels and members of the police force from the upper level to the grassroots level are to cooperate in discharging respective duties.

(4) Wellwishers hand over cash for social welfare tasks
 
YANGON, 25 Feb - Wellwishers made a donation for social welfare tasks being undertaken by Thanmyanthu Economic Group was held at the City Hall of the Yangon City Development Committee this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo explained about the social welfare tasks.

(5) Minister for Health meets Thai visitor

YANGON, 25 Feb - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Senior Manager of Scientific Affairs Ms Vipapan Panitantum of Nestle Products (Thailand) Inc at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road at 2 pm today.  Also present at the call were officials of the Ministry of Health.


(6) Communication courses of Ministry of CPT conclude

YANGON, 25 Feb - Introduction to Data Communication Course, Data Base Management and Programming Course, Intermediate Course on Internet, and Refresher Course on Postal Accountancy of the Telecommunications and Postal Training School under, Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs concluded at the school this morning.  Present on the occasion were Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, senior officials under the ministry and the principal of the training school and faculty members.  Speaking on the occasion, Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin said the school has planned to accept 1128 trainees for 62 kinds of courses according to the 1999-2000 training programme. So far, 978 persons have completed 58 kinds of courses including the present four courses.  Data Communication Course, Data Base Management and Programming Course and were opened under the technical cooperation programme between the ministry and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), he said.  MPT under the ministry is applying modern communication technology for the advancement of the nation s communication system, he said.

(7) Commander attends opening of Township MCWA day nursery in Sittway

YANGON, 25 Feb - The opening ceremony of day nursery of Sittway Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the nursery in Sittway on 23 February morning.  Present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and members, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and officials, Patron of Supervisory Committee for Rakhine State MCWA Daw Khin Hnin Wai and members, departmental officers and well-wishers.  At the auspicious time, Professor Dr Kyu Kyu Swe and Daw Khin Hhin Wai formally opened the day nursery.  Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe pressed the button to unveil the signboard.  The commander and party inspected the school.  Afterwards, Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe met members of the Maternal and Child Welfare Association at Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Office this morning.  Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained about the functions of MMCWA.  Well-wisher presented cash to Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe for MMCWA (Central).  The Vice-Chairperson presented certificates of honour to donors.  Patron of Rakhine State MCWA Daw Khin Hnin Wai presented K 100,000 to an official for Sittway Township MCWA.  Then, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and officials inspected the day nursery and Western Command MCWA office.  Afterwards, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented gifts to Daw Khin Hnin Wai for MMCWA of Western Command.


(8) 57 Mingin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 25 Feb - Fifty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingin Township, Sagaing Division.  Fifty-seven members of Mingin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 14 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
