(1) Senior General Than Shwe receives Malaysian Foreign Minister
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received the visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar and party at Credentials Hall of the Pyithu Hluttaw Building on Pyay Road at 10 am today.

Also present together with the Senior General were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander- in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office and Director-General of Protocol Department.

The visiting minister and party were accompanied by Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Mohamad bin Noh.


(2) Secretary-1 receives former Health Minister of Japan
 
YANGON,16 Feb -Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received the visiting former Health Minister of Japan Mr Sohei Mlyashita and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 2 pm today.

The visiting former Health Minister of Japan and party were accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai.


(3) Secretary-1 receives national race leaders of  Kachin State Special Region 2
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Race Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council.Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received national, race leaders of Kachin State Special Region 2 U Zaw Maing and members U Zaw Baun, Dr La Ja and U Zaw Yaw at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4, pm today.

They discussed electric power generation and all-round development of border areas.


(4) Nurses urged to take part actively, energetically in  implementing national health plans
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - The 45th Conference of Myanmar Nurses Association was opened this morning at Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.  Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein said the association which sponsored the conference is now 52 years old. The association is now formed with 143 branches and over 12,000 members.

The association which was founded in 1948 has dutifully served the well-being of the national and the people throughout the successive eras. With the leadership of the State, the association is keeping in the fore Our Three Main National Causes in striving to implement the health policies, to uplift the national health standard and to launch public health care activities at present.

It is also taking part actively in all national movements sponsored by the State. In other words, it is included in the reserve forces of the nation.

The nation is spending a large amount of money in uplifting the national health standard to reach the level of ASEAN nations. Efforts are being trade in accord with the motto  Health for All  and changing and developing conditions of the nation in uplifting the national health standard. The standard of hospitals in Mandalay has been upgraded to reach the standard of hospitals in Yangon; and Mandalay has become a centre for health care activities of the people of upper Myanmar.

Nurses training schools are being opened in the entire nation; and the State is making systematic arrangements for the the development, of the life of nurses. Midwives are also enjoying, opportunities which they had never achieved in the past. Due to the efforts of the experts in the respective health fields. health staff of Myanmar are being recognized by the international community Nurses are being sent to foreign countries such as Japan, France and Singapore to uplift their skills. The government is also permitting experienced nurses to work abroad.

Understanding the good-will of the government, nurses should take part actively and energetically in implementing the health programmes of the nation. Success in the health sector should be recorded with precise data to express the practical condition of the sector.

Conferring of United Arab Emirates Health Foundation Prize on Institute of Nursing in Myanmar by United Arab Emirates through the World Health organization is good news. In conclusion, the minister said nurses are also united and alert, possessing the will to preserve their fine traditions and moral. Thus, they should hand down their tradition of unity, success and nobility to new generation nurses. After the opening ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the exhibition marking the 45th Conference of the association.


(5) Minister inspects rubber plantations, rubber wood factory
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected inflow and outflow of water at Azin Dam in Mudon Township, Mon State, on 15 February.

At his meeting with staff of the farm, the minister stressed the need to collectively extend vineyards and staff welfare activities and to take fire preventive measures. At the farm, the minister and party inspected plantation, of rubber under sprinkler system, mixed-cultivation fields, growing of vegetables for staff welfare, crossbreeding of five kinds of rubber, production of rubber saps, rubber conservation fields and rubber saplings.
 
On arrival at Kangalay Farm of Myanma Agriculture Service, the minister and party heard a report on research, efforts being made to boost the yield, production of quality strains, crossbreeding of mangosteen and durians and other fruits. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said efforts should be made to produce quality durian strains through hybridizing, to continuously conduct research by applying modem technologies to fulfil the local demand of fruits and vegetables and to extend welfare programme. He then inspected durian research programme.

After inspecting sawing of old rubber trees, steaming of rubber wood with chemicals to .upgrade its durability and drying at the rubber wood factory of Myanmar Perennial Crops Enterprise at Yoeyoe village, Mawlamyine Township the minister gave instructions to officials.

At Applied Research Centre for Perennial Crops of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise at Pha-auk in the township , the minister and party observed nurseries of tung oil, thidin and various strains of oil palm, and producing of high yield oil palm seeds.

In Mawlamyine, the minister and party visited the nursery market festival sponsored by Myanma Agriculture Service.

They were conducted around the festival by officials.


(6) Seminar on progress of production capacity in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone begins

YANGON, 16 Feb - A seminar on progress of production capacity in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone sponsored by Sub-committee for nurturing of human resources of Myanma Industrial Development Committee, was held at the management committee s office of Shwepyitha Industrial Zone at the corner of Kanaung Road and Indus trial Road in Shwepyitha this morning.

Present were Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Work Committee Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Labour, Deputy Minister for Industry-1, directors-general and heads of department.

Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin spoke on the occasion.

The seminar continues till on 19 February.


(7) Health Care Leadership and Management Course opened
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Health Care Leadership and Management Course, sponsored by Health Department of the Ministry of Health, was opened at Health Training Centre this morning, addressed by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Maj-Gen Ket Sein said the course will give priority to management, leadership and organization sectors; and health related functions will be also lectured at the course.

Doctors who will attend the course should take part in implementing the health task and in conducting courses for their subordinates, giving close supervision and coordination, reviewing the work and taking necessary measures for timely completion of the tasks.

Staff should strive in unity to realize the objectives the State.

With the participation of the people, the Ministry of Health is launching disease control and public health care programmes and environmental cleaning programmes.

It is required to provide adequate medicines and medical equipment to hospitals in the entire nation to ensure effective and advanced treatment.

By combining the knowledge on health policy, management, health subjects and social dealings gained at the course, the trainee doctors should strive with added momentum in leading health staff for speedy implementation of disease control, treatment and rehabilitation programmes.

Health staff should strive to accomplish their tasks as projected, should draw work plans and try to implement the aims of the health sector and prove their love for the country with work.

Twenty-five doctors are attending the two-week course.


(8) National Convention Convening Commission meets
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and commission members. Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made a speech at the meeting.

Secretary of the National Convention Convening Commission, National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to National Convention.

Members of National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions.

Afterwards, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.


(9) Minister meets GM of Bioni Crushing Plant Co
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met General Manager of Bioni Crushing Plant Company of Italy Dr Anglo Reina and party at his office at 4 pm today.


(10)  Minister for Construction tours Rakhine State

YANGON 16 Feb - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister and experts from Public Works inspected roads and bridges to be built along Thandwe-Taungup-Kaingshe- Tanhlwe-Lamu-Maei Road on 15 February.

The minister and party went to the construction site of Maei Creek where Project Superintending Engineer U Tin Htut and officials reported on the project and progress of work.

The minister gave instructions on work and fulfilled the requirements.

The minister and party inspected the site for construction of Sanepauk Creek Bridge. location of Minkyaung Creek and axis.

This morning the minister Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and officials inspected Kyaukphyu-Yanbye Road, Kyaukphyu-Maei road.
 
The minister and the commander inspected Tanhlwe-chaung Bridge Project, Kaingshe Bridge, Thandwe-Gwa Road and Hsatthwa Bridge Project.


(11)  Minister for Home Affairs inspects police station in Lashio Township
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing and District Police Commander yesterday inspected No 1 police station and patrol camps in Lashio Township.
 
The minister gave instructions on successful implementation of five tasks for crime reductions building of police force as reserve force of the nation in accord with four main tasks, anti-narcotic campaign, unity in the police force, efforts to become prestigious police members, responsibility, correct procedures and welfare.

The minister also inspected patrol camps in the township.


(12)  Four exchange arms for peace in Thaton
 
YANGON, 16 Feb - Understanding the goodwill endeavours of the State Peace dnd Development Council in building a peaceful, stable, modern and developed nation, placing in the fore Our Three Main National Causes, armed groups in the jungles are exchanging arms for peace.

At Peinnhedaw Tatmadaw camp in South-East Command area chairman of Peinnhedaw village of KNU brigade 1 Po Htoo bringing to ether with him one AK-47, three magazines, ten rounds of ammunition, one mine and one walkie talkie exchanged arms for peace On 1 February and chairman of Machet village Maung Shwe Yi and Maung Thaung and pvt Zaw Naing bringing together with them one AK-47, five magazines, 160 rounds of ammunition, six mines, one fuse, three hand grenades, two bombs and one walkie talkie exchanged arms for peace on 7 February.

The ceremony to mark the exchanging of arms for peace was held at Peinnhedaw village in Thaton Township on 10 February.

Present on the occasion were Col Khin Maung Soe of Kawkareik Station, senior military officers, local elders, members of Village Union Solidarity and Development Association, the four persons who exchanged arms for peace and their families and local people.

Col Khin Maung Soe extended greetings to them and presented cash and other provisions to the four persons who exchanged arms for peace.

Po Htoo, on behalf of the persons who exchanged arms for peace, spoke words of thanks.

Col Khin Maung Soe and party cordially greeted and presented provisions to those who exchanged arms for peace.


(13)  32 Changyi Village-tract NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 16 Feb - Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Changyi Village-tract in Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division

Thirty-two members of Changyi Village tract NLD in Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Changyi Village-tract Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office in Taungtha Township and the party concerned on 16 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
