(1)PM of Cambodia to visit Myanmar at invitation of Senior General Than Shwe

YANGON, 16 Feb - At the invitation of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Prime Minister His Excellency Samdech Hun Sen and Madame Bun Rany Hun Sen of the Kingdom of Cambodia will pay a goodwill visit to the Union of Myanmar in the near future.

YANGON, 15 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Grand Uncle of Japanese Emperor Mr Motohisa Yamakage and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon.



(3)Secretary-1 receives Malaysian Foreign Minister

YANGON, 15 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

The visiting minister and party were accompanied by Ambassador of Malaysia Dato' Mohamad Noh.


(4)Secretary-1 hosts farewell dinner in honour of Union Day delegates

YANGON, 15 Feb - Chairman of Central Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted farewell dinner in honour of Union Day delegates, traditional cultural troupe members, Dawei traditional troupe members of Taninthayi Division and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association who attended the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Ceremony at the National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this evening.

It was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council , Secretary-3 , member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command .

The Secretary-1 and guest enjoyed dinner together with Union Day delegates.

The Secretary-1 and party greeted national race leaders and Union Day delegates.

Artistes from Fine Arts Department, Myanma Thabin, Music Asiayon and Motion Picture Asiayons and traditional cultural troupe members entertained the guests with songs and dances.

(5)Merits shared for construction of three-storey building of Dakkhinayon Pariyatti  Sarthintaik

YANGON, 15 Feb - Merits were shared for successful completion of a three-storey building of Dakkhinayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik on Myoma Kyaung Street, Dagon Township, here this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Patron of Dagon Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Dagon Township member of the State Working Committee of the Sangha Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Gunananda administered the Five Precepts.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party presented offertories to Sayadaws led by Sayadaw Bhaddanta Gunananda, Patron of Dakkhinayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Samvara.

Sayadaws recited the parittas.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Gunananda delivered a sermon.

Congregation shared the merits gained.

Well-wishers presented K 550,000 to repair Indawya Pagoda Street in Dagon Township and to set up a trust fund for Dakkhinayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik.

Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung accepted the donations.

The Secretary-2 and party offered "soon" to Sayadaws.


(6)Malaysian Foreign Minister arrives

YANGON, 15 Feb - At the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar U Win Aung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar, accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, arrived here by air this morning.

The visiting minister and guests were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister , officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador of Malaysia to Myanmar Dato' Mohama bin Noh and staff of ,the Malaysian Embassy.

The visiting minister and party called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung at his office at 2 pm.

In the evening, Minister U Win Aung hosted dinner at Karaweik Palace in honour of the Malaysian Foreign Minister and party.


(7)MRTV observes 54th founding anniversary

YANGON, 15 Feb - Myanma Radio and TV of the Ministry of Information observed its 54th founding anniversary this morning in Studio A of MRTV, attended by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung. The minister said though TV was introduced in Myanmar not long ago, Myanmar Radio was established 54 years ago at about the same time the Tatmadaw was founded. Myanmar Radio has served the nation for over half a century. MRTV has shouldered the national duties laid down by the State without fail; and has realized the objectives laid down by the ministry. Holding of anniversary days enhance unity and friendship among MRTV staff, he said.

Proposals should be presented and resolutions should be laid down at the anniversary celebration. All should keep in the fore Our Three Main National Causes, which is the main essence of the national policy. It is required for all to strengthen the resolutions with national spirit, Union Spirit and patriotism in striving to ensure peace, stability, modernization and development in the nation and perpetuation of the nation with full national belief and conviction.

Staff should work with bright ideas in conducting functions of divisions, branches and sections of MRTV. The best effort of every single staff is the strength for the nation. As the internal strength lies within, it should be built in the country. All should strive for well-being of the majority and for individual interest.

Gifts were presented to staff who won medals and who were outstanding in training courses.

The minister presented gifts to doyen artistes.

(8)Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation inspects Ingabo Farm in Kyaikhto

YANGON, 15 Feb - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and departmental officials inspected Ingabo Farm of Myanma Agriculture Service in Kyaikhto Township on 14 February.

Manager of the farm reported on cultivation of fruit plants. Managing Director U Tun Than of MAS reported on quality fruits and use of high tech.

The minister gave instructions on work and inspected fruit plants and nurseries.

The minister and party inspected saplings of oil palm trees. The minister was briefed on plantations by Managing Director of Myanmar Perennial Crops Enterprise U Myint Oo and farm in-charge.

In the evening, the minister and party went to the construction site of Winphanon Reservoir Project where Director of Irrigation Department-1 U Maung Maung reported on progress of work and future tasks and construction of clusters of dams in Mawlamyine region.

Acting Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win reported on supply of machinery.

The minister explained about construction of dams and reservoirs, irrigation and drinking water, thorough inspection, systematic discharge of duties and welfare in meeting with service personnel.

The minister, Deputy Commander of South East Command Brig-Gen Myo Hla, Secretary of Mon State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw and officials inspected construction projects Winphanon Reservoir is 1,800 feet long and 178 feet high and its capacity is 1 49,500 acre feet and it will irrigate 13,000 acres.

The minister and party inspected Cramp Rubber factory. Officials reported on rubber production and machines. The minister gave instructions on production of quality products and welfare of service personnel.


(9)Minister inspects shipment of heavy machinery to Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 15 Feb - Secretary of Leading Committee for Region-wise Agriculture Sector Development Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung arrived at C Class Base Workshop of Assistant Director's Office of Irrigation Department in Okkyin today, and inspected shipment of heavy machinery to Yuzana Co Ltd in Kawthoung by Pyi Yadana Z- craft.

Yuzana Co Ltd is taking part in implementation of Taninthayi Division development project with cultivation of perennial plants in Kawthoung District.

The minister gave instructions on measures to be taken for safety of machinery, five bulldozers, two excavators, one road roller and one truck.


(10)Contracts singed to provide assistance to health sector

YANGON, 15 Feb - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Former Minister of Health of Japan Mr Souhei Miyashita in Toungoo Hall at Traders Hotel here this morning.

After the discussions, Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung and JICA representative Mr Toshimichi Aoki signed a contract for continuation of the five-year Leprosy Control and Basic Health Service Project being implemented with JICA assistance in 48 townships of Magway, Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions.

Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai and Medical Superintendent of Yangon General Hospital Dr Taik Wan signed a contract to repair a lift at YGH under Grassroots Grant Assistance.

Mr Kazuo Asakai and Medical Superintendent of

300-bed Children's Hospital in Mandalay Dr Daw Tin Aye Kyi singed contract to provide equipment to the hospital.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Mr Souhei Miyashita exchanged the signed documents.

Mr Souhei Miyashita gave a speech.

Maj-Gen Ket Sein spoke words of thanks.

Officials of the Ministry of Health were also present.

(11)Ministry of Labour holds third four-monthly coord meeting

YANGON, 15 Feb - The third four-monthly coordination meeting of departments, boards and committee offices of the Ministry of Labour was held at Pinlon Hall on Minye Kyawswa Street in Dagon Myothit (North) yesterday morning. Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe spoke on guidance of the Head of State, political situations, rights of workers and opportunities, overseas employment, welfare of service personnel, cultivation of vegetables and observance of discipline.

Officials reported on work done and projects.

The directors-general of Labour Department and Factory and General Labour Laws Inspection Departrnent reported on reviews of work and undertakings for welfare.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein took part in the discussions.

The first day session of the meeting ended in the evening.

The second day session today was attended by Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein and officials.

After a review of work done during the previous four months, future tasks were laid down.



(12)Ashes of remains of Japanese soldiers killed in Myanmar front during WW II handed  over

YANGON, 15 Feb - The hand-over ceremony of the ashes of the remains of the Japanese soldiers killed in Myanmar front during the Second World War as well as some aircraft parts and military wares was held at the Wungyi Pedaytha Yarzar Hall in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 9.30 am today.

During his meeting with Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council in December 1999 while on a visit to Myanmar, former Japanese Prime Minister Mr Ftyutaro Hashimoto stated that it had come to his knowledge that recently some remains of Japanese soldiers and their military equipment had been recovered in Myanmar and it was the desire of Japan to convey the remains and the equipment back home. The present ceremony was therefore a result of the discussions and the systematic arrangements made under the guidance of the two leaders.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, handed over the ashes of the remains of the Japanese soldiers to the visiting former Health Minister of Japan, Mr Sohei Miyashita. Starting from 1975, Myanmar had handed over the recovered remains of Japanese soldiers to the Japanese side and the present ceremony is the fourteenth occasion so far held. The remains of the Japanese soldiers and some military wares handed over today were those recovered near Nyaungdon Township in February 1999 and Kyeeni Chaung bridge in Aunglan Township in November of the same year.

The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japanese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Kazuo Asakai, members of the delegation who came specially from Japan, members of the Japanese Embassy in Yangon, and the Japanese Military Attache to Myanmar.


(13)205 kilos of Ephedrine powder seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 15 Feb - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house at Nagyi-2/67 on 62nd Street between Swedaw and Thataphi Streets, Myothit Nagyi Ward, Chanmyathazi Township, on 21 January.

They seized owner of the house U Do Kham's son Thong Hsong Pyong, U Um Za Dal's son Khote Hlyan Mon of Panlong Ward 9, Kalay, U Ciin Lyan Thang's son Ciin Do Mon (a) Hla Aung of Panglong Ward 8, Kalay, U Soe Win's son Htoo Min Win of Aungmyethazan, Mandalay and U Nan Lyan Phon's son Khaing Khant Pong of Myoma Ward, Tiddim, with four packets of Ephedrine powder weighing five kilos hidden in the water tank in the compound and American-made one .25 pistol, one magazine and six rounds of ammunition hidden in the ceiling of the kitchen.

According to their confession, the authorities seized five bags of Ephedrine powder weighing 180 kilos at No Hsa/15 on 8th Kywehsekan Street in Chanmyathaya Ward, Pyigyidagun, on 23 January, and two bags of Ephedrine powder weighing 20 kilos at No Sa Sa-3/19 on 57th Street in Kanthaya Ward, Chanmyathazi Ward, Mandalay, on 25 January.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(14)23 members resign from Myingyan NLD of own accord

YANGON, 15 Feb - Twenty-three members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Myingyan Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-three members of Myingyan Township, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 21 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
